Back from Break! Thanks for tuning in as we return from a short break. On this episode, we have a special guest-Julian. Longtime Lounge listeners will remember Julian from Season 1: March Madness episode about Hardcore Punk. Julian returns with a deep dive into punk and punk adjacent sounds. He talks in length about the Salt Lake City scene of which he was a part of, we discuss the “state of punk” where we highlight contemporary bands, we play a game of ‘Love it or Hate it” with a heavy emphasis on genres like emo, screamo and pop punk and so much more. This week the lounge pays respect the independent record label Fat Possum Records from Oxford, Mississippi. Fat Possum got its start recognizing the artist of the North Mississippi Region, known as the hill country. Hence their early releases focused on highlighting the hill country blues of this region. Now days the label has expanded to include other styles of music. During the Last Call segment it stays relatively chill but that doesn't mean there is not plenty of banter. On this episode of the Last Call, the fellas engage in their first ever full on album review. One week prior to recording the episode, each of the contributors were asked to spend some time with Pedro the Lion's new release, Havasu, and come prepared to Pound, Sip or No Sip to the entire album! The fellas will continue this format off and on for the remainder of the season. This format allows us to engage in deeper and richer conversation about the album and concept, which is how we truly listen to albums! We hope you enjoy! Then the fellas try to convince the guest why the track they selected best represents that specific genre. If you listened to our March Madness series in season 1 then you know that Jmac, aka The Vinyl Historian, crushed the competition. It wasn't technically a sweep, but it was a sweep. This season our first guest is Jake from Pittsburgh, Jeff's brother in law's brother in law. Jake chose for the group to focus on 60s and 70s experimental music, it gets groovy and trippy all at once, check it out! Then we move on to segment 2, The Last Call, and it gets spicy! Things take a real turn when Jeff challenges the authenticity of one of the greatest slowcore bands of all time. We also play some really dope music. You are not going to want to miss this one, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the episode.

Welcome back listeners to Season 2 Ep. 2 of the Lounge! In this episode we are one member short, we miss you Psychedelic Bones, but the fun and banter is no less. The format is a little different this week, as we dive into one specific historical record label, Black Jazz. Black Jazz was founded in 1969 in Oakland California, and featured only black jazz artist of the time. Tune in as the fellas give a little history on the label and share some of their favorite artist and tracks. Lounge contributor, Vinyl Historian, has special place in the pitter patter of his heart for this instrument and sound. In Episode 13, the fellas talk generally about music criticism and then take on the music publication, Pitchfork. Each host chooses one of their favorite albums that received a terrible review from Pitchfork and they defend that album. In the second part we argue who was a the better jazz record label Impulse or Blue Note. Some great arguments are made for both sides but ultimately only one winner can prevail. In this episodes the fellas look back on one year in the pandemic. For many of us the last thing we did before the world came to a halt was go to a live show. The pandemic has been hard on all of us in so many ways, but has hit small businesses especially hard and music venues are no exception. In order to pay respect to venues who have closed their doors for good and to highlight those still fighting to stay open, we dive into our favorite venues and most memorable shows at that venue. In the second episode we dive into West African contemporary rock. This segment is guaranteed to have some of the sickest guitar licks you have heard in a long time. Please be sure to support your favorite venues and small businesses in anyway you can during this time as a lot of these places have been there for us in the hard times. In this week's episode the fellas continue their celebration of Black History Month with and in-depth look at The Chitlin' Circuit. The Chitlin' Circuit was a series of venues predominantly in the South. These venues were mostly black owned and operated and provided a place for black musicians to play during Jim Crow while they were excluded from many of the nations white owned venues. The Chitlin' Circuit is another example of how black people in America used art, creativity, and entrepreneurship as a form of resistance. We hope you enjoy learning about the background of The Chitlin' Circuit and hear some of its greatest performers.

Welcome back to the lounge! This week's format is slightly different. We will continue with our regular long form format including the weeks democratically elected theme in the first round and genre of choice in the second round. However, going forward the final round that featured new music and criticism will be released as a new segment called Last Call.  This week at the lounge the fellas kick off Black History Month, although its the Lounge's stance that black excellence should be celebrated everyday. In the first round we start with a celebration of black owned record labels.  Next, we expand on a previously unrecorded session and get into the world of international protest music that is closely linked to decolonization movements that developed post WWII.  Tune in and enjoy the show! But don't forget to close out the end of your week by checking our new segment Last Call. 

In honor of Dr. King, tonight at the lounge the fellas dive into the theme of artists that passed to soon. Unfortunately, some our greatest heros were taken from us before fully achieving all of their greatness. We can't help but wonder what might have been with these magical people. In round 2, we get into the genre of First Wave Ska focusing primarily on the of the label 2 Tone Records. Lastly, we end with the criticism round and as usual it gets a little spicy.
