Dax Riggs is a singer songwriter and guitarist based in Lafayette, Louisiana. He has spent much of his career in the worlds of metal, punk-blues, and psych rock, starting with the heavy sludge band Acid Bath as a teenager then moving through country-punk, folk and gospel along his journey. His newest record in 12+ years, 7 Songs For Spiders (out now via Fat Possum) is a honed and realized expression of death, life and the door in between. Dax tells us why he left the scene for such a long time, what he learned and how he fell in gospel singing along the way. He shares his writing process, how he examines and re-examines his tunes and why goosebumps are his main barometer. We learn why Dax picked up a guitar in the first place, Joe and Dax share some early band experiences and we hear a few tunes. Few artists embody the full spectrum of rap, quite like today's guest on the show - Ghais Guevara. Through breakout records in Black Bolshevik and There Will Be No Super-Slave, Ghais has made a name for himself with fiercely political lyricism, and a bold left-field sound. On his latest album Goyard Ibn Said, Ghais expands his scope, incorporating sounds of trap music and drill, flexing his songwriting muscles that leads to legitimate hits as a result, while staying true to his political worldview and creative expression. In today's episode, Ghais speaks on how he and other politically-minded rappers are perceived and treated by rap listeners, what inspired the musical direction for Goyard Ibn Said, and expands on the commentary on the pitfalls of the entertainment industry explored within the album, and much more. Ghais is a rising star in the making, you do not wanna miss this! The Plug (0:50). The Interview (2:27). Ghais' recent signing to Fat Possum and the initial reception Goyard Ibn Said (3:03). Ghais' perspectives on how politically-minded rappers are perceived and treated by rap fans (6:52). What inspired the musical direction of Goyard Ibn Said (16:12). The impact of producing the bulk of Goyard Ibn Said with little to no samples (21:45). The thinking behind the two-act structure of Goyard Ibn Said (25:20). Key messages Ghais wanted to get across to the listener on Goyard Ibn Said (27:20). Diving into “Critical Acclaim” and the recent string of events exposing the entertainment industry (29:49). How Ghais navigates an inherently oppressive industry while maintaining his integrity (36:04). Ghais' evolution as a songwriter (38:03). Upcoming projects / tour dates / merch (42:13). Ryan Lee Crosby blends echoes of Mississippi, Mali, and India into songs that speak from—and to—the heart. Produced by Fat Possum's Bruce Watson, Crosby's latest "Winter Hill Blues" evokes the essence of Mississippi, refracted by influences of Indian slide guitar. The sound is forged from his life as a traveling musician and studies with Jimmy "Duck" Holmes and RL Boyce. “Of all traditions, what speaks to me most is the Bentonia blues,” Crosby relates. "It expresses all emotions: joy, sorrow and everything in between. The blues shows us how to have compassion for ourselves and others. Its lessons are endless.” https://youtu.be/aRaN0qzsi5Y

The second part of a special double feature, returning us to Krakow's Unsound festival, where we began with Episode 1. The inaugural episode featured Resina and Lea Bertucci, from Poland and New York, respectively, and so for the sake of symmetry, this episode pairs Antonina Nowacka and Dreamcrusher, two artists who make affective, vocal-based music, but to very different affects. That is to say, this is an episode that leans into contrasts: the US and Europe, home and away, morning and night, quiet and noise. We discuss non-dance DJ sets, the relationship between music and fashion, the joys and difficulties of traveling as an artist, and the adventurous programming of Unsound. "That's the problem with a lot of things these days," wrote Bob Dylan in 2022, "Everything is too full now; we are spoon-fed everything. All songs are about one thing and one thing specifically, there is no shading, no nuance, no mystery. Perhaps this is why music is not a place where people put their dreams at the moment; dreams suffocate in these airless environs." This mournful attitude — for a lost age of artfulness, mystery, and hope — pervades Dylan's 2022 book, Philosophy of Modern Song. In this sense, it's a quintessentially conservative book. But decline and nostalgia are not its only themes.  In short bursts of prose reflecting on sixty-six totemic songs (from Webb Pierce's 1953 hit "There Stands the Glass;" to The Fugs' 1967 proto-punk romp "CIA Man;" to Nina Simone's unimpeachable "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"), Dylan conjures a country — and canon — defined most of all by mutability, motion, and menace.  Dylan's America never stops moving, reinventing itself, or rebelling against its own strictures. Things get better; things get worse; what they don't do is stay the same. To help us make sense of Bob Dylan's idiosyncratic vision of America and American song, we're joined by Know Your Enemy musician-in-residence (and Bob super-fan) Will Epstein. Besides providing the music for our show, Will is a song-writer, composer, and improvisor; his latest album, WENDY, is out from Fat Possum records. (Download it or buy the vinyl here.) Music may not be the place where most people put their dreams these days, but it's still where we put ours. And there is no better way to understand America's dreams than by listening — closely — to its music.  Sources:Bob Dylan, The Philosophy of Modern Song (2022)Bob Dylan, Chronicles: Volume One (2005)Sean Wilentz, Bob Dylan in America (2010)Clinton Heylin, Bob Dylan: Behind the Shades Revisited (2003)Martin Chilton, "Bob Dylan and the Great American Songbook," May 24, 2022Raymond Foye, "Bob Dylan's The Philosophy of Modern Song," The Brooklyn Rail, Nov. 2022.Hua Hsu, "How Nam June Paik's Past Shaped His Visions of the Future," The New Yorker, Mar 29, 2023.John Szwed, Cosmic Scholar: The Life and Times of Harry Smith, coming Aug 2023....and don't forget to subscribe to Know Your Enemy on Patreon for access to all of our bonus episodes!

The ninth episode of The Vineyard Podcast W/ Derek James (The Entrance Band, Mazzy Star, The Pesos) "Just a few years ago, Entrance was one person: Guy Blakeslee, a Baltimore-born, Chicago-based guitarist. Blakeslee cut his teeth on Fat Possum acoustic blues then graduated into full rock auteurdom with Prayer of Death, a crazy-ass collection of psychedelic guitar scribbling and acid howls. For his follow-up, he has joined forces with drummer Derek W. James and bass player Paz Lenchantin (both of whom played on Prayer) as the Entrance Band, and the rhythm section + lead guitar equation is meant to recall the Jimi Hendrix Experience. This reconfiguration from lone troubadour to bandleader is a bit confounding: Prayer of Death filtered Bay Area psych rock and Chicago-style electric blues into an idiosyncratic and compelling mishmash, and with what seemed at the time like an unwavering devotion to a peculiar vision, he most certainly didn't sound like someone who would play well with others." Seratones frontwoman A.J. Haynes and her Shreveport, Louisiana-based band (bassist, Travis Stewart and drummer, Jesse Gabriel) released their disco-inspired, third album Love & Algorhythms, earlier this year. At the time of writing the album, A.J. was also working full-time as an Abortion Advocate in the last standing Abortion clinic in Louisiana, an experience that brought her close to burnout and informed much of the record's theme of liberation, Afro-Futurism and radical joy as a form of protest. She draws from the works of Black Feminist authors in her lyrics –– from civil rights activist, Toni Cade Bambara ("The Salt Eaters") to Science Fiction writer Octavia Butler ("Xenogenesis") and queer activist, Audre Lorde ("A Burst of Light" and "Sister Outsider"). While no longer working at an abortion clinic, she is still the President of the Board at the New Orleans Abortion Fund, and continues the fight for Reproductive Rights. Many thanks for making this possible — A.J. what an absolute force you are! I have learnt so much. Thank you to Fat Possum for use of songs from the album Get Gone. And to New West Records for songs from Power and Love & Algorhythms. And for support from Shazila Mohammed, Jaclyn Ulman and Devin Velez at Grandstand Media.Songs Featured: "Good Day," "Choking On Your Spit," "Don't Need It," "Power," "Fear," "Pleasure," "Get Free," "Two Of A Kind" and "Power of Your Light."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com Or leave a voice message here.

Long-running space rock pioneers Spiritualized return with their ninth studio album, the appropriately titled Everything Was Beautiful. Founding and sole constant member Jason Pierce (aka J. Spaceman) plays 16 different instruments on the recording, which was done at 11 different studios (not including his home), and employing 30 different collaborators.  “There was so much information on it that the slightest move would unbalance it," he admits in a press release, "but going around in circles is important to me. Not like you're spiraling out of control but you're going around and around and on each revolution you hold onto the good each time. Sure, you get mistakes as well, but you hold on to some of those too and that's how you kind of... achieve. "Unknown Mortal Orchestra" is the musical project from singer, guitarist and songwriter Ruban Nielson.Ruban was born in Darwin Australia, but moved to New Zealand when he was a child. His first artistic inclinations were towards illustration, being influenced by comic books ranging from Spiderman to Spawn. Despite having parents that were heavily into music, it wasn't until Ruban turned 19 that he finally decided to learn the guitar. He formed a band with his brother called "The Mint Chicks" and eventually went on tour, supporting well known artists, such as The White Stripes. It would be a decade later, after moving with his family to Portland Oregon, that Ruban would eventually create the "Unknown Mortal Orchestra" moniker. A project spawned from working away in his basement home recording studio, and leading to a surprising turn of events that would land him a record deal. This is a fascinating story, and probably one of our longest episodes so far. Dehd - "Bad Love" from the 2022 album Blue Skies on Fat Possum. Post-punk trio Dehd return this spring with Blue Skies, their fourth album overall, but their first for Fat Possum Records. Today's featured track finds the Chicago-based band channeling an '80s new wave vibe, calling to mind The Jesus & Mary Chain led by Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons.  “‘Bad Love' is about recovering from love addiction and making a decision to stop choosing and aligning with people who aren't your energetic match,” said vocalist Emily Kempf in a press release. “I wrote it for myself and for everyone who needed to hear a song about choosing new forms of love. It's about chasing a relationship with oneself rather than an unhealthy one, one that just doesn't quite fit, or a codependent one. Everyone experiences loneliness and everyone needs connection. I wished to reclaim loneliness for myself and others as something not embarrassing or to be a kept dark secret. I wanted to embrace loneliness and being alone, alchemizing it with friendship and behaviors with self that don't involve romance or sex.” Blue Skies hits store shelves on May 27th, preceded by a May 5th appearance at Neumos in Seattle. Spiritualized - "Always Together With You" from the 2022 album Everything Was Beautiful on Fat Possum. If today's Song of the Day sounds a little familiar, you're not just tripping on Spiritualized's otherworldly psych-sound. “Always Together With You” was originally released in demo form in 2014 as “Always Forgetting With You (The Bridge Song)”, but it's since been reworked for the long-running space-rock band's ninth album, Everything Was Beautiful, out February 25th via Fat Possum. The title — along with the title of his 2018 album And Nothing Hurt — completes a beloved quote from Kurt Vonnegut's classic 1969 novel Slaughterhouse Five.  “There was so much information on it that the slightest move would unbalance it, but going around in circles is important to me,” said frontman J Spaceman (real name: Jason Pierce) in a press release about the upcoming release. “Not like you're spiraling out of control but you're going around and around and on each revolution you hold onto the good each time. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've put together a pair of tourmates—past and present—who are separated by decades but united by a deep respect of American music: Patterson Hood and Carl Nichols. Patterson Hood has been in rock bands since he was a pre-teen, and he's been the co-leader of Drive-By Truckers since 1996. The band has explored the sounds and ideas of Southern rock—Hood is from Alabama—over the years, with sounds and lyrics that stretch the boundaries well beyond the world of Lynyrd Skynyrd. As you'll hear in this conversation, Hood is a nuanced thinker and writer. You'll also hear that, of course, on his records, both as a solo artist and a Drive-By Trucker. The band actually released two albums last year, The Unraveling back in January, and then its companion, The New OK, in October. Carl Nichols, aka Buffalo Nichols, toured with Drive-By Truckers in the past, and he's in the midst of another touring opening for them now. Nichols, as you'll hear, has an interesting musical history of his own—he's been more of a genre jumper than his friend Patterson, playing in punk bands early on and then in the Milwaukee folk-ish duo Nickel and Rose. He just released his debut as Buffalo Nichols, and it takes a turn toward what Rolling Stone called “existential blues.” It's just out on the venerated Fat Possum label. Nichols and Hood—that sounds like a great name for a duo, come to think of it—talk here about the protests in Portland, where Hood now lives; how Hood's politics drove off a certain percentage of his audience; and a mutual love of Outkast. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Patterson Hood and Carl Nichols for chatting. This episode was produced by Melissa Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time.

Think it's too late in life to follow your creative dreams? Then let Robert Finley show you how it's done. Over six decades as a student, a soldier, a carpenter, and a family man, he made sure the blues remained a part of the fabric of his life. But when he was forced to retire due to failing eyesight, Robert decided that it was time to take his music seriously. An impromptu jam session led Robert to a deal with Fat Possum Records, and the beginning of his new career as a recording star at sixty-one years of age. Join Nick as Robert reminisces about his amazing life and the lessons learned along the way, a life that has taken him from rural Louisiana, to touring the world with legendary session musicians, to the upcoming release of his new album "Sharecropper's Son".   HIGHLIGHTS:   [02:01] Robert looks back on the low budget recording of his first album in 1999 [03:10] Robert was born and raised in northern Louisiana, the heartland of the Southern blues [04:32] Robert credits his religious upbringing for giving him an open mind about faith and how it applies to the everyday world [09:12] When he was a boy, Robert used the money his father gave him for shoes to buy a guitar [11:55] As a 10 year old kid, Robert was routinely exposed to loud blues music from the juke joint across the street from his church [13:46] Robert has always been able to use the Bible to justify being his own person and not following the crowd [16:54] Losing his father at 17 drove Robert to joining the Army, despite losing many friends to the Vietnam war [21:11] Robert has friends who were there with him from the early days, but he's learned that some people become haters when you make it in life [22:42] Robert's musical talent was constantly being rewarded during his military career [31:18] In 2015 Robert realized he was losing his sight, but even after being diagnosed with glaucoma he persevered [32:21] When Robert got out of the military, he started a gospel group with his mother that performed live on the radio [35:18] Robert's dad was a carpenter who built the house he grew up in back in the 1950s, a house where Robert's daughter and grandson are living now [36:53] After his second marriage ended, Robert found he could travel about the country easier because he only had to look out for himself [39:27] Gathering a crowd during a jam session in Arkansas in 2015, Robert wound up playing a 12 hour set for appreciative crowds [48:55] Tim Duffy of Music Maker Relief Foundation saw Robert performing, and after recording some of his songs, introduced him to the people at Fat Possum Records [50:37] While Robert was recording "Age Don't Mean A Thing", his first record with Fat Possum, he was attending a school for the blind, to learn how to work with his diminishing eyesight [51:35] After fellow label mate Dan Auerbach got Robert to sing on his musical book project, Auerbach decided to record and produce Robert's second album "Goin' Platinum!" in three days [56:46] The session players who worked with Robert on "Goin' Platinum" had such a great time in the studio, they came out of retirement to go on tour with him   Follow our social media channels for last-minute announcements and guest reveals @theradicalpod on Instagram and Facebook. Country Westerns self-titled debut album released last summer and later landed on many best-of 2020 lists, including our own (Ep. 43). This week we have the Country Westerns - guitarist Joey Plunket, drummer Brian Kotzur and bassist Sabrina Rush - who talked about the winding road that brought them together, the band's progress to the Fat Possum record deal and their debut album, and musician life during COVID-19. We also found out they are baseball fans -- Joey grew up with the Braves, Brian the Astros and Sabrina the Cubs (that collective heartache must drive their music, right?). Find this wonderful album on Amazon and Bandcamp or if possible, your local independent record store. Buy this record, put it on repeat and thank us later if you haven't listened already -- and go see their show when the road clears. In Chapter Two, and early look at Spring Training after the first weekend of games. Also, Eduardo Rodriguez returns after missing the 2020 season with COVID-19 complications and looked strong in his first simulated game., Scott Kazmir returns to MLB as a Giant non-roster invitee, hoping to make a Major League Roster for the first time since 2016. There is also the Spring Training 20-pitch rule, evaluating the major free agent signings and, out of the blue, our take (and Craig's wife's) take on J. J. Watt signing with the Cardinals. In Chapter Three, Taylor Swift re-recorded her smash hit single "Love Story" and the entire second album from which it originates, "Fearless," which releases in Spring. Love Story had predictable immediate  success on the country charts so Swift wins another round, in a big and sobering way, against her longtime nemesis Scooter Braun and former record label, Big Machine. No doubt, to be continued!.

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Guy Blakeslee over Zoom video! Guy Blakeslee shares “Sometimes,” the latest single from his gorgeous and dramatic upcoming solo album Postcards From The Edge, out February 5, 2021 via his own Entrance Records. The album is the latest from the guitar-wielding frontman of psych-legends The Entrance Band-- a wandering soul who has spent the better part of his musical life on the road--and was recorded in New Orleans at the house studio of Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The enchanting “Sometimes” video was filmed by Lael Neale, and follows the album’s lead single and title track “Postcards From The Edge.” read more about Guy and the new album via American Songwriter.“A few Summers ago, my life had come crashing down. You could say I had destroyed it,” notes Guy. “Abandoning all illusions of security and leaping off the uncertain edge, I landed in a tiny windowless room overflowing with my broken musical instruments. A chance encounter with a friend of a friend led me to a cat-sitting gig in an Old Hollywood apartment where Man Ray and Orson Welles had once lived. When I wasn’t chasing the devious felines up and down many flights of ancient stairs I would lose myself for hours at the well worn piano, where I could feel my former identity slipping away.”“A sudden windfall of unexpected money appeared and days later I was on a plane to Spain to meet my Belgian friends,” Blakeslee adds. “Floating on my back in a Spanish swimming pool, in a moment of weightlessness and surrender, I pondered with relaxed clarity my strange fortune - after risking everything without a plan, I had arrived in that perfect stay of unknowing, of beginning anew. I had answered the call of destiny and was reincarnated as the FOOL in the Tarot, wandering into the present without a care in the world. Just like in the Tarot, the journey I was undertaking would lead me through the deepest shadows of despair and to exalted heights of ecstasy, but I was not thinking about the future. In the weeks that followed, as I walked the empty streets of Brussels late at night, singing to the rhythm of my own echoing footsteps, the song ‘Sometimes’ was born.”In addition to his work with The Entrance Band, Guy has released solo albums under the ENTRANCE moniker via Fat Possum, Thrill Jockey & more. He has typically used his own name to release his most experimental and confounding records and Postcards From The Edge is no exception. The album was recorded with and produced by Enrique Tena Padilla (Oh Sees, Wand) and features appearances from singers Lael Neale, Hale May, Rachel Fannan and drummer Derek James (The Entrance Band). Postcards From The Edge is electrified by the spirit of sonic experimentation, and the fervent desire to chart a map into unknown territory. Across the record’s seven tracks, Blakeslee’s questing lyrics teem with stormy emotion, his plaintive voice finding succor in richly-textured melodies that soar over lushly-produced soundscapes, always on the verge of collapse. We want to hear from you! The Weather Station - "Tried To Tell You" from the 2020 album Ignorance on Fat Possum. The Weather Station (a project of Toronto-based artist Tamara Linderman) returns early next year with her fifth full-length, titled Ignorance, out February 5, 2021 via Fat Possum; today, we get a sneak peek at the new release with today's Song of the Day, "Tried To Tell You." In a press release, Linderman tells us the track is about “reaching out to someone; a specific person, or maybe every person, who is tamping down their wildest and most passionate self in service of some self (and world?) destructive order.” The accompanying video was directed by Lindeman herself, and was set near the house where she grew up. She adds: The video portrays a person who is beset by miracles and visions of beauty, which emanate from inside of and all around him, but rather than reacting with awe or joy, he reacts with annoyance, indifference, and mistrust. We are taught not to see the natural world that we still live in, preferring instead to dwell on the artificial, which is so often a poor substitute for the vibrant real. Flowers really do rise up from mud, and many of us are full of treasures and beauty, but we often discount these things or throw them away.  Read the full post on KEXP.org   Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lightning Bug - "The Onely Ones," a 2020 single on Fat Possum. Throughout the month of May, KEXP has been celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. We’re putting an extra spotlight this week on API artists with this week’s Song of the Day picks, continuing with Lightning Bug’s “The Only Ones.” Helmed by songwriter Audrey Kang, Lightning Bug has been making hazy, swooning music since arriving on the scene in 2015 with her project’s self-titled debut and continuing through last year’s excellent October Song LP. But if you’re just learning about Lightning Bug, her latest single “The Onely Ones” offers a spectacular entry point, with washes of guitar static and Kang’s effervescent vocal performance. It’s a beautiful sonic fog, one you won’t mind losing yourself in. — Dusty Henry Support the show.

After stepping into the '90s last episode, Episode 9 highlights the backward looking glance of that decade: via its garage punk revival, and notions of 'discovery.' We look at R.L. Burnside, a unique Hill Country blues player who performed for decades in small-town Mississippi, becoming a household name after collaborating with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion 50 years after his first gig. Then we turn to the most resilient underdogs of the '90s garage revival: a band from Boston called Cheater Slicks, who didn't languish in obscurity...but reveled in it. Outside of having worked at the co-op for a number of years, prior to that, Jeremy was heavily involved with the 400 Bar, an iconic (and now shuttered) dive bar on Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis, near the University of Minnesota campus. Literally a hole in the wall, it however attracted a cavalcade of local talent, as well as national names that were all on the cusp of bigger things. The conversation about the music scene in Minneapolis was so enthralling, Kevin forgot to ask Jeremy about his earliest musical memory; maybe some other time? Click here for more information about the AWARD WINNING music site, Anhedonic Headphones.  Episode 4 credits: The intro to the episode featured an instrumental version of "Labels," performed by GZA/Genius, taken from the 2012 Get On Down/Geffen/Universal Music Special Markets release Liquid Swords - The Chess Box (Instrumentals.) The song originally appears on the 1995 Geffen Records release Liquid Swords. The theme music is a YouTube rip of the intro to BET's "Rap City: The Bassment," airing from 1999 to 2005. In this episode, we discussed: "Distance" by Beau Kinstler, from the 2005 self-released album Ocean. "Anytown Graffiti" by Pela, from the 2007 Great Society release  Anytown Graffiti. "Rapture (Sweet Rapture)" by A.A. Bondy, from the 2007 Fat Possum release American Hearts. "Rise Up With Fists!!" by Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins, from the 2006 Team Love Records release Rabbit Fur Coat. "Pale White Horse" by The Pines, from the 2004 Trailer Records release The Pines; this Podcast uses a live/in-studio recording of the song from a 2013 Audio Tree session. "Tying My Shoes" and "Closing The Doors," both by Caroline Smith and The Goodnight Sleeps, from the 2008 self-released album Backyard Tent Set. "Piano Song" by The Heartless Bastards, from the 2004 Fat Possum release Stairs and Elevators.  Please note the music played on the Anhedonic Headphones is used with the intent for discussion and promotional purposes only. I tried coming up with some kind of theme to EPISODE #65 of Random Old Records, but had the hardest time. 18 out of the 20 tracks included here feature a female vocalist, but it's not any kind of feminist statement. It jumps across genres. There's punk and reggae but not at the same time. There's great love songs, great rage songs, and a couple where I have no idea what they are about. It's music for singing and swaying and dancing. The early-going is dominated by British music from the late 80s, thanks to the incredible recent C87 and C88 box sets from Cherry Red that document those years in UK indie history. There's been so many great CD-only releases lately that I have started buying them regularly again. You'll also hear  new tracks from second-generation reggae rocker Hollie Cook, NYC poppers The Shacks, and Canadian no-wave dynamos Ruby Karinto. Their self-titled debut LP on HoZac is an early frontrunner for album of the year!Loveland, Ohio's own Colemine Records is also highlighted, via a track from their February reissue of Gloria Barnes' rare deep-soul classic Uptown, and a recent moody soul cut from The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn, NY. The episode then finishes up with some new and old post-punk bashers from Aquarium, Grass Widow, Pill, the World, and so much more!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. Rolling with Music Industry Changes Via Kickstarter–Tom Irwin

The UnStarving Artist

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 2, 2018 52:13

Tom Irwin grew up admiring and learning songs by the likes of Grand Funk Railroad, Led Zeppelin, and Thin Lizzy. He was a participant of the 80s New Wave scene, but eventually found himself drawn to life as a solo artist. He's been musically genrefied as folk rock and alt country. Willie Nelson once said to Tom about his band's performance after they opened for Willie & Family in 2001, “I like your shirt, and your music, too.” Tom was wearing a Hank Williams, Sr. shirt. He has recently worked with John Stirratt of Wilco, who was involved in the production of Tom's latest release All That Love. He's a music journalist for the Illinois Times and a gigging machine. Music and journalism have helped him build a network of lifelong friends. Some of these friends have become studio collaborators. Tom's journey as a solo artist started after he witnessed fighting among his bandmates. These particular bandmates were also his best friends; and the fighting was an event he tells me he never wanted to experience again. The release of Tom's latest album was a long road traveled during changing times in the music industry. He rolled with the industry changes and eventually made his latest release happen with the help of a Kickstarter campaign that raised almost $10,000.  To hear Tom talk about this 5-year journey, you wouldn't get the impression that he found it all that challenging. He obviously learned some things along the way, but he comes across as nothing more than grateful and humble when discussing it. The quintessential indie artist I recorded our interview on a day when Internet service was down at my home studio. The audio isn't great, but that's mostly on my end. Tom (the important guy) sounds pretty good. I mention this because I'm so glad we went through with the interview, in spite of the tech issues. In the episode intro, I refer to Tom as a "statesman" of indie artists, but that was the wrong word. I should have said that Tom is the "quintessential" indie artist. A music column that Tom writes for The Illinois Times is somewhat the reason that we connected. Tom met Rockin' Johnny Burgin at Central Blues and wrote a piece on him for the Times. They became fast friends. Rockin' Johnny told me I should have Tom on the podcast. This all strikes me as fairly typical. It seems that Tom has developed many friendships through music and journalism. This reminds of the savvy musician adage, "Be cool, and don't be a dick." As we spoke about his relationships and music journey, it became quickly evident that he is kind and genuinely pleasant to be around. A case in point is a chance meeting he had with John Stirrat of Wilco in 2012. Tom was playing at a venue called The Castle in Bloomington Illinois, opening for Candy Gold, a band featuring Ben E Carlos of Cheap Trick and Stirrat. Following a fortuitous mix up in performance scheduling, Stirrat arrived at the venue during Tom's set and liked what he heard. Stirrat appreciated Tom's music enough to engage in a conversation, and eventually to coproduce All That Love. This point of Tom's journey could have been marred by the changing music industry. When the project was ready to market and distribute, both Tom and Stirrat were surprised by changes that meant labels were no longer providing a clear path to distribution. While All This Love was being created, all things distribution had changed. Labels were no longer investing in artists as they once had.  According to Tom, this came as a disappointing surprise to Stirrat. Things had changed, but Tom forged on–enter Kickstarter. Kickstarter put Tom back in the driver's seat A friend suggested to Tom that he look into Kickstarter. While I'm sure that all of Tom's recording projects have been important to him, this one had to be especially so. Not only was Stirrat co producing and performing on the record, but he also recruited Greg Wieczorek (aka G. Wiz).  The album was released in 2017. Where labels had cited lack of "bandwidth" on their part and lack of "traction" on Tom's part, Kickstarter put Tom back in the driver's seat. This was a familiar place for Tom, as he'd been marketing and distributing his own music for years. This time, however, it was on a bigger scale. The Kickstarter campaign, Tom says, gave him funds for media promotion and I'm sure helped with the finished product. Although he  learned some lessons about media promotion, it's clear that Tom is thankful for the success provided by his Kickstarter campaign. The Unstarving Musician
Rolling with Music Industry Changes Via Kickstarter–Tom Irwin

The Unstarving Musician

He shared with me that Kickstarter also helped him from a planning and accountability standpoint. “I got to go stick my head in the back room, and watch them make the sausage." All That Love is available pretty much anywhere that digital music can be found–and on vinyl through Tom's website. On the subject of digital distribution and royalties, Tom gave me a better picture of what streaming does for an artist's paycheck. Jackson Scott is an Asheville based artist who just exploded onto the scene. His record Melbourne started to make the rounds and was picked up by outlets such as Pitchfork and NPR. The exposure he was getting attracted many different record labels. He eventually had to take his record down at which point it was released officially by Fat Possum records. The album received great reviews from many different sources. Jackson Scott stopped by the studio before his show at Cat's Cradle with Unknown Mortal Orchestra to talk about his accelerated rise to fame, the Asheville music scene, and his new album. So, I went back a couple weeks ago and completely remixed, remastered, and recreated the episode from scratch. They will remind me of that time forever, and I am glad the episode is finally complete.]2011 is almost over, and oh my goodness where did the time go?! The past twelve months were filled with all kinds of good things for me on the life front, and much like last year, there were SO MANY crucial rock n' roll records released and a bunch of killer shows that damaged my eardrums even further. EPISODE #38 of Random Old Records cuts away all of the extra padding and somewhat clever soundbytes and presents an hour of my personal favorite songs of 2011 with no interruptions! You'll hear all the songs I've been raving about since January, including heavy hitters like "Gold Sneakers" by Wax Idols, "Weekend" by Smith Westerns, and "Into Black" by Blouse. You'll hear heavy-duty psychedelic blowouts from The Paperhead, Thee Oh Sees, and The People's Temple, and perfect pop from Dum Dum Girls, Colleen Green, and The Babies. So yeah, the air conditioning has been broken in my office at work all week long. Neat, huh? It's like eleventy billion degrees outside, so it's a perfect time to drop a brand new podcast of hot rock n' roll jams to sweat out the summer months with! Random Old Records EPISODE #32 features brand new tracks from Black Lips, Wax Museums, Ty Segall, and Cults, each from LPs that are sure to top the year-end lists. Ty Segall in particular has a stunner ready for all of you with Goodbye Bread, which thickens and slows down his bratty garage punk sound and brings the superficial Beatles and Nirvana influences of his past releases to the forefront in a way that will have mainstream rock critics blowing their stacks when they finally get around to checking it out.To be honest, I wasn't much of a Black Lips fan before, but the steady hand of super-producer Mark Ronson guides the band and polishes the shit out of their hooks and sound on the new Arabia Mountain. The blasts of bratty feedback and in-jokey murkiness of their previous releases has been replaced with huge gang choruses, sleazy saxophones, and more refined melodies than ever before. Random Old Records #32 includes "Raw Meat," which is a short and sweet Ramones homage that might be the best song they've ever recorded. Check it out! Also, you may notice some strange and different sounds on Random Old Records #32 that you haven't heard in previous episodes. For some reason, this new wave of dark and moody electronic rock has really been catching my ear in the past month or two, most notably the releases from Brooklyn's Captured Tracks label. On this episode, you'll hear a KILLER track from Portland's Blouse called "Into Black." These folks sound like they're trying to create a late 80s David Lynch movie credits theme with every track, and that's not really a bad thing in my book. You'll also hear darker Suicide-style tunes from The Soft Moon and Led Er Est that are on steady rotation around Random Old Records HQ.You'll also hear new hot blasts of rock n' roll from Wax Idols, The Hussy, Personal And The Pizzas, Brian Olive, Ramma Lamma, The People's Temple, Natural Child, Smith Westerns, Thee Oh Sees, and loads more! Almost a year and a half ago now my friend Craig came round to record a podcast about early blues which we, somewhat unimaginatively, called the Craigcast. A great deal of that conversation centred around Fat Possum Records (Wikipedia), and how Matthew Johnson struggled for years to keep it trundling along, despite being near bankruptcy for most of the time.  It wasn't until soul legend Solomon Burke decided to release his comeback record with them that they finally got out of the financial woods with some finality. Craig's interest in the label is based around an obsession with old blues music, but from a modern indie kid's perspective Fat Possum are still one of the best record labels in the world - The Walkmen, AA Bondy, Andrew Bird, Sonny and the Sunsets, Band of Horses, The Black Keys, Dinosaur Jr., The Felice Brothers, Wavves and Yuck all release with them.  So this is absolutely all about Fat Possum and their bands.  Sort of a tribute, and sort of a public demonstration of me being absolutely green with envy. 01.
