Call it “brain fog,” call it “attention economy burnout,” call it the dregs of late capitalism: however you label it, Tamara Lindeman has been feeling it. With “Neon Signs,” our favorite song from her 2025 album as The Weather Station, Humanhood—out now on Fat Possum Records—she gives names and shapes to the sense of dread so many of us feel permeating our daily existence.  “I've gotten used to feeling like I'm crazy—or just lazy,” she sings in her signature flinty voice at the start of the song, articulating the ennui of being stuck in a cosmic rut. Unending conflict, climate anxiety, and the always-on buzz of the internet—all of it has rendered so many of us inert. But the pulsing piano, swirling flutes and strings, and insistent beat do powerful work here, adding forward motion to Lindeman's existential angst. A protest song of a stripe, “Neon Signs” feels like a spiritual update of The Who's “We Don't Get Fooled Again”—a cautionary tale wrapped up in defiance. Untangling the politics of want and need, of trust and fear, of lust and genuine connection, Lindeman wanders a glittering landscape in which every flashing light demands notice and every notification could single doom. Is cutting through all that noise possible? “Neon Signs” doesn't make it clear, but Lindeman tips her hand in favor of the possibility of human flourishing in spite of it all—if only we can get honest with ourselves: “I swear to god I saw real love once/But nothing needs you so badly as a lie, so lonely, drifting, unmoored from real life/if nobody believes it all it can do is die.” This week on Transmissions, she joins host Jason Woodbury to discuss Humanhood—the album, sure, but also the concept of what makes us human. We're so pleased to share this talk with you.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Jake Xerxes Fussell. Originally from Columbus, Georgia, Jake is the son of folklorist Fred Fussell, and as a teenager began playing and studying with elder musicians in the Chattahoochee Valley, apprenticing with Piedmont blues legend Precious Bryant, with whom he toured and recorded. In 2015, Jake released his debut self-titled album composed entirely of adapted folk and blues songs on Paradise of Bachelors, his home for his next three albums: What in the Natural World, Out of Sight, Good and Green Again. Earlier this summer, Fat Possum Records released his latest album When I'm Called, and listeners, it's a delight! If I had to think of one word to describe today's guest, E L U C I D, and his latest album, REVELATOR, it would be “fearless” in every sense of the word. Fearless in its sonic direction that infuses industrial noise, South Asian / Middle Eastern instrumentation and more, into this one-of-a-kind take on hip-hop. Fearless in its boundaryless, ultra-poetic vocal stylings. And also fearless in its subject matter that processes all of the darkness happening in this world, while never ceasing to lose faith in love and a better tomorrow. With REVELATOR, E L U C I D achieved something rare - total creative realization, where the lyrical messaging, the sound, the tone, the songwriting, all feel perfectly in tune with one and other... all building towards this overarching artistic vision that is so powerful and affecting. Just two days before the new album dropped, E L U C I D gives us an in-depth look into the making of REVELATOR, the genesis of its bold sonic direction, how the state of affairs in our world feed into this art, and so much more. After hearing this album 30, maybe 40 times now, as of the time of recording, I'm 100% comfortable saying that REVELATOR is my Album of the Year. And honestly, it is a contender for being one of the very best albums of the entire decade. This album and this artist are just that special, so you do not wanna miss this! The Plug (1:04). "The times when I'm writing the most are when I'm reading a lot," Carl "Buffalo" Nichols says on today's podcast. And wow is this true: you cannot be a writer of any stripe unless you read. Nichols likes to read voices that he cannot relate to. He mentions writers like Flannery O' Connor and H.L. Mencken, as well as books like A Clockwork Orange and A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He didn't even like them all, but he still felt that hearing those voices makes him a better writer. So on this episode we talk about how reading makes him a better songwriter, why being tired and cranky makes him a good editor, and why he likes to stop writing when he knows he still has something left in the tank.Nichols' latest album The Fatalist is out now on Fat Possum Records.

Milwaukee singer-songwriter Buffalo Nichols returns to Basic Folk today to talk about his new album, ‘The Fatalist,' out September 15 from Fat Possum Records. We picked up where Nichols' debut album left off, traveling the world hot on the heels of the blues. Following a profound tradition can be just as frustrating as it is romantic. In his years on the road promoting his self-titled debut album, Carl aka Buffalo has witnessed how the blues can be a home base for listeners' nostalgic, back-in-the-good-old days, artistically stagnant, patriarchal tendencies. He wants none of it. ‘The Fatalist' is an offering to the gods of change, of self-awareness, of integrity. One of the major achievements of this collection of eight songs is the seemingly effortless sonic collage that comes second nature to hip hop but is less discussed in roots and americana. From a Charley Patton sample to “Ali Farka” Touré-influenced fingerpicking to tasty 808s to contemporary songwriting that wrestles with what it means to be a good man in 2023, ‘The Fatalist' tells a story about the present, while keeping the past close and eschewing sentimentality. This sense of being in conversation with storytellers of the past is a pillar of what I would call the Black Art Tradition, and it is part of what makes Buffalo Nichols one of the most exciting artists in blues music right now.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Donate to #FreeBlackMamas: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/freeblackmamasDonate to Abortion Care Tennessee: https://www.abortioncaretn.org/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

You know that line in The Green Mile? The one in which Eduard Delacroix -- after stepping out of his cell to walk to his impending death -- tells Brutal, Paul, Dean, and Harry that he wishes he "coulda met you guys somewheres else"?That's kinda how I feel about Kenton Campbell, which is not to say I'm not grateful for knowing him at all; I am. I just think that -- perhaps under different circumstances, perhaps had a couple of zigs been zags instead -- we mighta been good buddies. Who knows. Maybe we'd even occasionally hoop together.I say all that to say this: Mr. Campbell didn't owe me a shingle's worth o' shit, but he took time out of his busy schedule regardless, and he swung by for Episode #28 of the Badass Records Podcast, and I'm super-stoked that he did.I suspected that -- were he to commit to doing an episode -- his selections might include a curve ball or two. I wasn't wrong and I wasn't disappointed. We discussed Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter II (2005), DMX's Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood (1998), Master P's Ghetto D (1997), Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998), and Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), and all five were a true treat to dissect with Kenton. We also talked about parenting and housing and language and life. We briefly visited basketball and culture, and family and what life might be like in the recording industry, and all of it was great fun.I could bore you with a dozen more details about how I'm blessed that folks -- amongst and within all of the hiccups and rejection -- continue to say, Yes, to be a part of this endeavor, but I'll spare you them. It's been about a half a year since this thing went live, and I still have faith that the universe is allowing for it to happen because it exists as tiny doses of good stock in humanity. To that end, if you enjoy this conversation (or any others you may've stumbled across), please consider sharing with a friend.Thank you.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio samples. They are clips from a tune called "Got Messed Up" off of R.L. We had the pleasure of interviewing Don Lifted over Zoom video! Memphis-based genre-defying multihyphenate Don Lifted unveils latest single and music video “The Rope” via Fat Possum Records. Of the release, Don Lifted shared, “The Rope represents planting a flag for me. It's written from a sense of sureness in the fact of my reality and my abilities. I view it as a rare moment of hyperconfidence and aggression while recording my album 325i. The record highlights my fortitude as an artist, and as a person who has drastically innovated and greatly contributed to the environment that I came up in.” Working in tandem as brothers, “The Rope” was directed by Martin Matthews and edited by Don Lifted (aka Lawrence Matthews). The accompanying visual perfectly complements the single's eerie nature and ethereal vulnerability. Viewers join Don Lifted on a dark journey, as he attempts to navigate his path to success amid outside forces trying to bring him down. The single follows on the heels of his album 325i released in October 2021. Recorded in 2020, the album encapsulates reckoning with movement versus stagnancy, questioning of direction, and embrace of detours. Through hauntingly atmospheric R&B beats, stinging guitar, and dexterous flow, Don Lifted bridges indie and hip-hop creating an unprecedented sound. The multi-disciplinary maverick is also set to take stage at SXSW this Thursday, March 17th. The show will take place at SXSW's Hotel Vegas stage at 7:50pm ET. Other appearances include the SXSW Aces High x Minor Figures on March 18th, The Treefort Music Fest on March 26th, and Schubas on April 16th. We want to hear from you! The new music this week hits a variety of different genres that are sure to hook you in as we continue our full album review format. Tune in and listen to what the fellas are spinning!

Dehd - "Bad Love" from the 2022 album Blue Skies on Fat Possum. Post-punk trio Dehd return this spring with Blue Skies, their fourth album overall, but their first for Fat Possum Records. Today's featured track finds the Chicago-based band channeling an '80s new wave vibe, calling to mind The Jesus & Mary Chain led by Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons.  “‘Bad Love' is about recovering from love addiction and making a decision to stop choosing and aligning with people who aren't your energetic match,” said vocalist Emily Kempf in a press release. “I wrote it for myself and for everyone who needed to hear a song about choosing new forms of love. It's about chasing a relationship with oneself rather than an unhealthy one, one that just doesn't quite fit, or a codependent one. Everyone experiences loneliness and everyone needs connection. I wished to reclaim loneliness for myself and others as something not embarrassing or to be a kept dark secret. I wanted to embrace loneliness and being alone, alchemizing it with friendship and behaviors with self that don't involve romance or sex.” Blue Skies hits store shelves on May 27th, preceded by a May 5th appearance at Neumos in Seattle. Check out the video for the song at the link below, and revisit their Live on KEXP at Home session from 2020. Welcome to Roadcase!!  Erika Wennerstrom has been performing in her band Heartless Bastards for close to 20 years now has recently released a gorgeous new album, A Beautiful Life, which she co-produced with Kevin Ratterman, in which confronts the challenges and nuances of the day within a truly innovative sonic landscape. A native of Ohio, Erika now calls Austin, TX home, and she talks about her early days booking her own shows, working hard and playing every gig she could -- which ultimately resulted in a chance meeting with Patrick Carney of The Black Keys and signing with Fat Possum Records!  Erika has been defiant in staying true to herself and considers herself "a songwriter that performs live." She has played countless shows and her tours with Drive-By Truckers are legendary.  Although the band was forced to cancel their January 2022 European dates due to Covid, she will be hitting the road again in February and April with Flaming Lips -- a unique combination of artistry for sure!  So hop on aboard the Roadcase bus and learn more about this thoughtful and one-of-a-kind artist, Erika Wennerstrom.  It's gonna be a great ride!!For more information: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comTheme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

The studio was built in 2009 by Bruce Watson in Water Valley MS, and was originally a part of Fat Possum Records. But over the last few years Matt and Bronson have been running it and recording some amazing artists. Jerry Joseph, Riddy Arman, Water Liars, Drive By Truckers, and Jason Isbell have all worked on projects in the studio.    I had a chance to chat with Matt and Bronson about the label and studio. Austin-based guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Carl “Buffalo” Nichols wants to remind folks of the value of the blues as a cultural art form. “Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” The self-described music nerd considers Delta blues, Chicago blues, West African Malian guitar rhythms, and the African ancestry of the clawhammer banjo in his sonic experimentation and ongoing study of chords and riffs. Nichols, who lived in Milwaukee for most of his life save for his overseas travels, is Fat Possum Records' first blues signing in nearly 20 years and “is grateful to be part of the label's legacy of blues music that also includes Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside,” (Austin Monthly). For his remote performances, Buffalo Nichols wields both a hollow body Fender guitar and a resonator-style guitar, as he plays tunes from his self-titled record. - Caryn Havlik  Set list: “These Things”, “How to Love,” “Lost and Lonesome”   “These Things”:  “How to Love”: “Lost and Lonesome”:

On today's Song of the Day, Audrey Kang — lead vocalist for shoegaze sensations Lightning Bug — shares her personal battle with self-worth against a delicate wash of guitars.  "Here I wanted to connect how the struggles and flaws within the individual are mirrored in the greater problems of society," she reveals in a press release. "How do we as individuals know we are on the right path? How do we as a society, as a species, know we are on the right path? So I started with myself, and my own struggles, touching on how I hide myself away from other people, on my stage fright, on my inability to be vulnerable, on this feeling I used to have that I needed to prove I was worthy of being alive. Then I tried to connect these struggles outward to global issues like xenophobia, arbitrary borders, the lines we draw between ourselves and the environment, and the ways we sacrifice the health of the planet for human convenience." Think it's too late in life to follow your creative dreams? Then let Robert Finley show you how it's done. Over six decades as a student, a soldier, a carpenter, and a family man, he made sure the blues remained a part of the fabric of his life. But when he was forced to retire due to failing eyesight, Robert decided that it was time to take his music seriously. An impromptu jam session led Robert to a deal with Fat Possum Records, and the beginning of his new career as a recording star at sixty-one years of age. Join Nick as Robert reminisces about his amazing life and the lessons learned along the way, a life that has taken him from rural Louisiana, to touring the world with legendary session musicians, to the upcoming release of his new album "Sharecropper's Son".   HIGHLIGHTS:   [02:01] Robert looks back on the low budget recording of his first album in 1999 [03:10] Robert was born and raised in northern Louisiana, the heartland of the Southern blues [04:32] Robert credits his religious upbringing for giving him an open mind about faith and how it applies to the everyday world [09:12] When he was a boy, Robert used the money his father gave him for shoes to buy a guitar [11:55] As a 10 year old kid, Robert was routinely exposed to loud blues music from the juke joint across the street from his church [13:46] Robert has always been able to use the Bible to justify being his own person and not following the crowd [16:54] Losing his father at 17 drove Robert to joining the Army, despite losing many friends to the Vietnam war [21:11] Robert has friends who were there with him from the early days, but he's learned that some people become haters when you make it in life [22:42] Robert's musical talent was constantly being rewarded during his military career [31:18] In 2015 Robert realized he was losing his sight, but even after being diagnosed with glaucoma he persevered [32:21] When Robert got out of the military, he started a gospel group with his mother that performed live on the radio [35:18] Robert's dad was a carpenter who built the house he grew up in back in the 1950s, a house where Robert's daughter and grandson are living now [36:53] After his second marriage ended, Robert found he could travel about the country easier because he only had to look out for himself [39:27] Gathering a crowd during a jam session in Arkansas in 2015, Robert wound up playing a 12 hour set for appreciative crowds [48:55] Tim Duffy of Music Maker Relief Foundation saw Robert performing, and after recording some of his songs, introduced him to the people at Fat Possum Records [50:37] While Robert was recording "Age Don't Mean A Thing", his first record with Fat Possum, he was attending a school for the blind, to learn how to work with his diminishing eyesight [51:35] After fellow label mate Dan Auerbach got Robert to sing on his musical book project, Auerbach decided to record and produce Robert's second album "Goin' Platinum!" in three days [56:46] The session players who worked with Robert on "Goin' Platinum" had such a great time in the studio, they came out of retirement to go on tour with him   Follow our social media channels for last-minute announcements and guest reveals @theradicalpod on Instagram and Facebook. And now, in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the band have released their first song ever sung entirely in English. In an interview with KEXP, vocalist Aliou Touré told us: "We need hope. We need to come together. And when we get worried, there's no way to think positive. So we don't have to be worried, we don't need that bad energy around us. Otherwise, we're not going to be able to go through this situation we are in. So that's why we wrote this song. Who can talk to everybody to keep their self-control. To not get worried and then we can be optimists together." Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

His tenure in Tav Falco's Panther Burns proves he's paid some dues. His appearance on the Troubled Men Podcast shows he's not done paying. Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Welcome back to another episode of Transmissions podcast, our weekly talk show. Our guest today is Don Bryant. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Bryant was one of the premier songwriters at Hi Records, where he wrote material for Al Green, O.V. Wright, Syl Johnson, and his wife, Ann Peebles. He released Precious Soul under his own name in 1969, but mostly kept behind the scenes, baring a few gospel records he released along the way, but in 2016, he returned to making records under his own name with Don’t Give Up On Love, released by Fat Possum Records.    He’s got a new one, too: You Make Me Feel. Produced by Scott Bomar, it’s a raw, live feeling record, but it also showcases the subtle lyricism and sophistication of Bryant’s songwriting chops. He joined host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss highlights from his massive songbook, his marriage and creative partnership with Ann Peebles, and his return to the stage.

Liz Brasher makes her own kind of southern music, one that's caught halfway between the garage, the church, the bar, and the bedroom. She's a soul singer. A guitar-playing rocker. A one-woman girl group. A gospel revivalist who sings the praises of secular bands like the Box Tops. It's a diverse sound rooted in the influence of Brasher's two homes: her adopted hometown of Memphis, where she recorded her debut LP, Painted Image, for Fat Possum Records; and her childhood stomping grounds in rural North Carolina, where she was raised in a musical, multi-ethnic household.  Recorded Feb. 2019 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ellis - "Fall Apart" from the 2020 album Born Again on Fat Possum Records. Hamilton, Ontario dream pop artist Ellis (real name: Linnea Siggelkow) had hearts aflutter with her 2018 EP The Fuzz. Earlier this month, she re-emerged with her debut full-length, titled Born Again, which, as the title alludes to, finds Siggelkow exploring her feelings on faith. As for today's Song of the Day, she explains, "This is really just an honest reflection of my struggle with anxiety and how I can't hide it from the people closest to me. It's about the feeling the first time someone you admire sees you in your most vulnerable state, about putting in the work to get better but still having moments of weakness..." SUGARAY RAYFORD is a Texas-born soul blues singer nominated for two blues music awards in 2019 including B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. Possessing a magnetic personality, and an old school vocal style that echoes Muddy Waters, Otis Redding and Teddy Pendergrass, Rayford is also a stellar dancer with moves reminiscent of the Legendary James Brown. ‘Somebody Save Me’ on Forty Below Records is an ambitious album that slides gracefully between the new blues of Gary Clarke Jr. and Fantastic Negrito, the rock & soul stylings of The War & Treaty and the vintage Daptones soul of the late Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones, bringing a fresh take to classic sounds. We had the opportunity to interview Lissie!"Lissie Maurus was raised in the riverside town of Rock Island, Illinois, and she drew upon those blue-collar Midwestern origins to create her own form of indie folk music. The granddaughter of an international barbershop quartet champion, she grew up singing in theater productions, eventually picking up the guitar and playing her own songs at local coffee shops as a teenager. Lissie was also something of a rebel; she got thrown out of high school during her senior year, spent a brief period at Colorado State University, relocated to Paris for a semester, and eventually ditched college altogether to pursue her music career. Returning to the U.S., Lissie headed west and settled in Los Angeles, where she became a fixture on the local venue circuit and landed a national tour opening for Lenny Kravitz.Lissie's music had already appeared on shows like The O.C., Veronica Mars, and House by the time she moved to California, and she widened her fan base by launching a weekly songwriter's circle at her local bar, Crane's Hollywood Tavern, and releasing a self-titled EP. Things truly began picking up speed in 2009, though, when Lissie released the dusky Why You Runnin' (partly recorded in the U.K.) and toured the country alongside Ray LaMontagne.Although she also made several appearances in America -- including a standout performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and a single date with the rebooted Lilith Fair -- Lissie spent most of her time touring Europe, where her debut record, Catching a Tiger, was released in June. An American release followed in August, courtesy of Fat Possum Records. Featuring production from a handful of artists including Jacquire King, Julian Emery, and Ed Harcourt, Catching a Tiger built upon Lissie's folkie California sound with a commercial appeal that helped land it in the Top Five of the U.S. Billboard Folk Albums chart and number 12 on the U.K. Albums chart. After an extensive period touring, particularly in the U.K., Lissie returned to the studio in 2012 with producer Garrett "Jacknife" Lee -- who had also produced albums for Snow Patrol and Robbie Williams -- to work on a follow-up. In October 2013, Lissie delivered her second full-length album, the glossy, '80s soft rock-influenced Back to Forever. The covers EP Cryin' to You followed a year later. In 2016, Lissie released her third studio effort, the Curt Schneider-produced My Wild West. Recorded in Los Angeles, Ojai, and Nashville, the album had a moody, noir-ish feel. It debuted at 16 in the U.K. and 171 on Billboard and was followed in the autumn by Live at Union Chapel. Lissie relocated to Iowa in 2017 and wrote the album that became Castles, a stripped-back, direct record released in March 2018. She continued to pare things down on 2019's When I’m Alone: The Piano Retrospective, which featured solo piano versions of her old songs." - AllMusic.com; Biography by Andrew LeaheyBringin’ it Backwards: Instagram - Twitter - FacebookLissie: Instagram - Twitter - Facebook - SpotifyCredits:Theme Song: Scott RussoDesign: Oscar RodriguezMentions:Thank you to Heather Hawke and Sonos!Favorite Quote from the episode “Do it for the right reasons and hopefully, you’ll find happiness.” - LissieContributors:Adam Lisicky, Tera Lisicky, LissieEmail: Hello@BringinItBackwards.comListen: https://link.chtbl.com/BiBhttps://www.instagram.com/columbiauk/https://www.instagram.com/fleetwooddmac/https://www.instagram.com/heatherhwk/https://www.instagram.com/jodudderidge/https://www.instagram.com/lennykravitz/https://www.instagram.com/lissiemusic/https://www.instagram.com/mcraftmusic/https://www.instagram.com/mihollywood/https://www.instagram.com/ozomatli/https://www.instagram.com/phillyglovehttps://www.instagram.com/sonos/https://www.instagram.com/thehotelcafe/https://www.instagram.com/umphreysmcgee/https://twitter.com/SCI_fidelityhttps://www.facebook.com/THEOS-JAVA-CLUB-56504854582/Keywords:@lissiemusic #lissie #lissiemusic #ElisabethCorrinMaurus #ElisabethMaurus @mihollywood @thehotelcafe @lennykravitz @mcraftmusic @jodudderidge @columbiauk @ozomatli @phillyglove @umphreysmcgee @sci_fidelity @heatherhwk @sonos @fleetwooddmac #mihollywood #thehotelcafe #lennykravitz #mcraftmusic #jodudderidge #columbiauk #ozomatli #phillyglove #umphreysmcgee #scifidelity #heatherhwk #sonos #danzig #Metallica #judaspriest #iowa #rockisland #ojai #farm #barbershopquarte #theos #theosjavaclub #openmic #fortcollins #colorado #illinois #mississippiriver

Tom Irwin grew up admiring and learning songs by the likes of Grand Funk Railroad, Led Zeppelin, and Thin Lizzy. He was a participant of the 80s New Wave scene, but eventually found himself drawn to life as a solo artist. He's been musically genrefied as folk rock and alt country. Willie Nelson once said to Tom about his band's performance after they opened for Willie & Family in 2001, “I like your shirt, and your music, too.” Tom was wearing a Hank Williams, Sr. shirt. He has recently worked with John Stirratt of Wilco, who was involved in the production of Tom's latest release All That Love. He's a music journalist for the Illinois Times and a gigging machine. Music and journalism have helped him build a network of lifelong friends. Some of these friends have become studio collaborators. Tom's journey as a solo artist started after he witnessed fighting among his bandmates. These particular bandmates were also his best friends; and the fighting was an event he tells me he never wanted to experience again. The release of Tom's latest album was a long road traveled during changing times in the music industry. He rolled with the industry changes and eventually made his latest release happen with the help of a Kickstarter campaign that raised almost $10,000.  To hear Tom talk about this 5-year journey, you wouldn't get the impression that he found it all that challenging. He obviously learned some things along the way, but he comes across as nothing more than grateful and humble when discussing it. The quintessential indie artist I recorded our interview on a day when Internet service was down at my home studio. The audio isn't great, but that's mostly on my end. Tom (the important guy) sounds pretty good. I mention this because I'm so glad we went through with the interview, in spite of the tech issues. In the episode intro, I refer to Tom as a "statesman" of indie artists, but that was the wrong word. I should have said that Tom is the "quintessential" indie artist. A music column that Tom writes for The Illinois Times is somewhat the reason that we connected. Tom met Rockin' Johnny Burgin at Central Blues and wrote a piece on him for the Times. They became fast friends. Rockin' Johnny told me I should have Tom on the podcast. This all strikes me as fairly typical. It seems that Tom has developed many friendships through music and journalism. This reminds of the savvy musician adage, "Be cool, and don't be a dick." As we spoke about his relationships and music journey, it became quickly evident that he is kind and genuinely pleasant to be around. A case in point is a chance meeting he had with John Stirrat of Wilco in 2012. Tom was playing at a venue called The Castle in Bloomington Illinois, opening for Candy Gold, a band featuring Ben E Carlos of Cheap Trick and Stirrat. Following a fortuitous mix up in performance scheduling, Stirrat arrived at the venue during Tom's set and liked what he heard. Stirrat appreciated Tom's music enough to engage in a conversation, and eventually to coproduce All That Love. This point of Tom's journey could have been marred by the changing music industry. When the project was ready to market and distribute, both Tom and Stirrat were surprised by changes that meant labels were no longer providing a clear path to distribution. While All This Love was being created, all things distribution had changed. Labels were no longer investing in artists as they once had.  According to Tom, this came as a disappointing surprise to Stirrat. Things had changed, but Tom forged on–enter Kickstarter. Kickstarter put Tom back in the driver's seat A friend suggested to Tom that he look into Kickstarter. While I'm sure that all of Tom's recording projects have been important to him, this one had to be especially so. Not only was Stirrat co producing and performing on the record, but he also recruited Greg Wieczorek (aka G. Wiz).  The album was released in 2017. Where labels had cited lack of "bandwidth" on their part and lack of "traction" on Tom's part, Kickstarter put Tom back in the driver's seat. This was a familiar place for Tom, as he'd been marketing and distributing his own music for years. This time, however, it was on a bigger scale. The Kickstarter campaign, Tom says, gave him funds for media promotion and I'm sure helped with the finished product. Although he  learned some lessons about media promotion, it's clear that Tom is thankful for the success provided by his Kickstarter campaign. He shared with me that Kickstarter also helped him from a planning and accountability standpoint. “I got to go stick my head in the back room, and watch them make the sausage." All That Love is available pretty much anywhere that digital music can be found–and on vinyl through Tom's website. On the subject of digital distribution and royalties, Tom gave me a better picture of what streaming does for an artist's paycheck. We had a good laugh talking about a recent statement from CD Baby that included a couple of album sales, followed by page after page of fractional streaming royalties. I'm reminded of a quote from a friend who regularly posts on Twitter: "Buy the music you like." A pleasant surprise for Tom is that vinyl sales are doing very well. Turns out people still appreciate a physical product version of their music. He shares advice on selecting the right company for producing vinyl versions of your album. According to Tom, there aren't a lot of companies to choose from, but he learned that location, weight, and shipping are worth careful consideration. In this case, Tom says that the company with the lowest price isn't necessarily the most cost effective choice. He chose to work with Fat Possum Records. This leads me to my favorite quote from our conversation. In recanting the day he took in-person delivery of the finished vinyl LP product, when he also got to see the Fat Possum production facilities, Tom said “I got to go stick my head in the back room, and watch them make the sausage." It will be shown in nearly 500 select theatres around the country, and to see where and to buy tickets head to www.fathomevents.com. We went to the theater event last year and it was awesome you almost feel like you’re there. Blues Blast magazine has had 2 great interviews in the last 2 weeks. The first one was with frontman for the Fabulous Thunderbirds Kim Wilson. It talks about the T-Birds new record and how he has gone from being influenced by the greats to becoming influential on the careers of a new crop of performers and the first time that he met Muddy Waters. It is a great interview. I will leave the link in this week’s write up. http://thebluesblast.com/Archive/BluesBlasts/2013/BluesBlast7_18_13.htm The second interview is with the legendary James Cotton. Though a bout with throat cancer and the ensuing loss of a vocal cord back in the mid-90s has left Cotton unable to do much singing, the Grammy Award winner and Blues Hall of Famer has steadfastly refused to allow that malady stop him from blowing the harp with as much power and gusto as he ever has. “I was a harmonica player before I was a singer. I didn’t really become a singer until I started fronting a band,” he said. “So, that (his health) has kind of made me be able to concentrate on playing the harmonica again. It kind of put me back on track.” Cotton’s health issues have also not put the brakes on his recording career, either. He just requires a little more help in the studio these days. And when you’ve got friends like Gregg Allman, Keb Mo, Warren Haynes, Delbert McClinton, Darrell Nulisch, Joe Bonamassa and Ruthie Foster to call on, well, you’ve got it made. You should read the entire interview and pick up a copy of Cotton Mouth Man on Alligator records. http://thebluesblast.com/Archive/BluesBlasts/2013/BluesBlast8_1_13.htm Lastly; The self-proclaimed ‘Boss of the Blues,’ James Lewis Carter ‘T-Model’ Ford, passed away from respiratory failure July 16 in his Greenville, Mississippi home. Depending on which account you believe, T-Model was somewhere between 89-93 years old (editor’s note: He told Blues Blast in an interview from Feb. 14 of this year that he was 92 years old). T-Model was the very embodiment of the blues and spent a couple of years on a chain gang for murder as a young man. He also claimed to have been married six times and fathered over 20 children. With his unique style of guitar playing – chopping off chords that were very reminiscent of a bell chiming – T-Model paired with R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough to help bring the Fat Possum Records label to national attention with four classic albums for the Oxford, Mississippi-based label. T-Model is survived by his wife Estella and grandson (and drummer) Stud. http://thebluesblast.com/Archive/BluesBlasts/2013/BluesBlast8_1_13.htm BLUES IN THE AREA:8/7 WEDNESDAY CHRISTINE OHLMAN & REBEL MONTEZ - WESTERLY TOWN BEACH (6-8PM) - WESTERLY, RI DAN STEVENS - THE OLD LYME INN (6 PM, WEATHER PERMITTING) - OLD LYME, CT THE CHRIS D'AMATO BAND - THE HARTFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY (NOON-1PM, 500 MAIN ST.) - HARTFORD THE TRAVIS MOODY BAND - BLUES, BERRIES & JAM FARMERS MARKET ON THE GREEN (NOON-1:30PM) - NEW HAVEN, CT BLUES JAM W/BRANDT TAYLOR - BLACK-EYED SALLY'S (8 PM) - HARTFORD 8/8 THURSDAY TOMMY CASTRO - CHAN'S - WOONSOCKET, RI ANA POPOVIC - STEARNS SQUARE (WORTHINGTON ST.) - SPRINGFIELD, MA SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY - BLACK-EYED SALLY'S (8 PM) - HARTFORD ERIN HARPE & THE DELTA SWINGERS - THEODORES' - SPRINGFIELD, MA DAN STEVENS - THE CONNECTICUT RIVER MUSEUM (5:30 PM) - ESSEX, CT BRANDT TAYLOR - THE SPRING HOUSE - BLOCK ISLAND, RI 8/9 FRIDAY TOMMY CASTRO - THE KNICKERBOCKER CAFE (8PM) - WESTERLY, RI JOHNNY RAWLS - CHAN'S (8PM) - WOONSOCKET, RI RICK ESTRIN & THE NIGHTCATS - THE OUTER SPACE (8PM) - HAMDEN, CT DAN STEVENS - THE CAPTAIN DANIEL PACKER INN - MYSTIC, CT THE WALTER LEWIS BLUES TRIO - THE LAKEHOUSE (7PM) - SEYMOUR, CT ERAN TROY DANNER (ACOUSTIC) - THEODORES' (9PM) - SPRINGFIELD, MA BRANDT TAYLOR - THE CANOE CLUB (9PM) - MIDDLETOWN, CT 8/10 SATURDAY STAFFORD SPRINGS BLUES FESTIVAL - HYDE PARK & THE PALACE THEATER - STAFFORD SPRINGS, CT HYDE PARK LINEUP (STARTS AT NOON): JAMES MONTGOMERY EASY BABY JUNIOR KRAUSS & THE SHAKES JOHNNY CHARLES & 706 UNION BAND JOSH SCUSSEL & THE RUDE BLUES BAND 13TH STEP DAN STEVENS Palace Theater lineup (starts 7:15 pm): AJ JANSEN CHRISTINE OHLMAN & REBEL MONTEZ George Thorogood / Buddy Guy - MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods (8pm) - Mashantucket, CT JOHNNY A. & JEFF PITCHELL - BRIDGE STREET LIVE (9PM) - COLLINSVILLE, CT THE RICH BADOWSKI BLUES BAND - SAM THE CLAM'S - SOUTHINGTON, CT RIVER CITY SLIM & THE ZYDECO HOGS - BLACK-EYED SALLY'S (9PM) - HARTFORD KING CAKE - THE LEBANON FAIRGROUNDS (3PM) - LEBANON, CT BRANDT TAYLOR - T.J. As electric utility companies face new challenges -- outdated energy infrastructure, rising fossil fuel prices, incorporating renewable energy sources -- state utility regulators have a unique and important role to play in the future of energy generation in the U.S. State utility commissions are responsible for overseeing the practices of investor-owned utility companies, which provide the majority of our country's energy services -- everything from setting energy rates to approving utility investments and enforcing renewable portfolio standards. The decisions regulators make over the next few years will determine the future of energy utilities for years to come. To help understand our country's emerging energy crisis and sketch out a transition plan for the next generation of electric utilities, we spoke with Ron Binz, former chairman of the Colorado Public Utility Commission and principle of Public Policy Consulting. Binz authored a new Ceres report called "Practicing Risk-Aware Electricity Regulation: What Every State Regulator Needs to Know", which looks at the role of state regulators in shaping the future of our national energy system.
