We catch up on all the hip hop albums from August 2025!
What if the thing you think is broken about you is actually proof of something extraordinary? There's a hidden filter that's been distorting how you see yourself, your mistakes, and your struggles. It's keeping you from recognizing the incredible strength that's been there all along, disguised as your deepest shame. In this episode, we dive into why shame doesn't just make you feel bad but literally changes what you're able to see. We explore how the stories you tell yourself about your "failures" might be missing the most important part: the extraordinary resilience it took to survive them. From Elizabeth Gilbert's wisdom about finding people extraordinary in their brokenness, to Earl Sweatshirt's journey from ironic detachment to sincere living, we unpack why the most courageous thing you can do is stop trying to outwit being human. This isn't about toxic positivity or pretending your pain doesn't matter. It's about developing the artist's eye: the ability to find beauty in what feels broken, and to see the complex, magnificent story of survival that your life actually is. If you've ever felt like you're fundamentally flawed, if you've been waiting to become "worthy" before you can see yourself as extraordinary, this episode is for you. It's time to remove the filter that's been hiding your own magnificence from your sight. What You'll Discover: • Why shame creates blind spots that keep you from seeing your own resilience • The cultural lie about what "extraordinary" people look like • How to shift from binary thinking to seeing the beautiful complexity of human experience • A simple practice for catching shame-based thinking in real time • Why your messiest moments might be evidence of your greatest strength Resources & Community Ready to transform how you handle life's biggest challenges? Serious question: Where does the time go? It feels like just yesterday I was nursing a New Year's Eve hangover and wondering what 2025 would portend for rap releases. Now the year is three-fourths done, the holidays are around the corner, and there's already a slew of music to talk about. On this week's episode of Dad Bod Rap Pod, the three bad brothers you know so well share their favorite rap records of 2025 (thus far). Think of it as our mid-year retrospective, except we're submitting it three months late, real high school vibes. The big takeaway is this: rap music is alive and thriving in 2025, especially indie rap. Did your favorite new album make the DBRP top nine? Tune in to find out, fam. Spoiler alert: the album of the year is still billy woods – Golliwog. But we also break down nine other releases from this year that are damn good, if not great. Program note: We recorded this episode about three weeks ago, before excellent records like Evidence's Unlearning Vol. 2 and Earl Sweatshirt's Live, Laugh, Love dropped. So you won't hear us talk about them here, but trust we've listened and will have plenty to say by year's end. If you're the type who likes to keep up week by week, I invite you to join our Patreon at Patreon.com/dadbodrappod. That's where we post weekly bonus segments that are more topical. In any event, I hope your year is going well, all things considered. -DEM This week's episode was produced by Demone Carter (a.k.a. DEM ONE). Theme song by DEM ONE and DJ Cutso. Dad Bod Rap Pod is a proud member of the Stony Island Audio Network!

Playlist:TOPS - Falling on my SwordBlack Country, New Road - Salem SistersKing Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Phantom IslandBIG SPECIAL, Rachel Goswell - THIN HORSEScrushed - starburnNilüfer Yanya - KneelJohn Glacier - Fly with MeKae Tempest - DiagnosesMIKE, duendita - Miss UMIKE, Tony Seltzer - Jumanji (feat. This week's episode opens with a powerful reflection on responsibility and the theme: “We keep asking where the community went… but are we building it?” We challenge listeners to consider their own role as today's community leaders. In Segment One, we explore the fading presence of mentorship programs like Big Brothers/Big Sisters, asking what happened, why fewer people are stepping up, and how we can revive mentorship — even informally. Segment Two takes a critical look at youth sports, questioning whether today's emphasis on image and social media has replaced the joy of play. The conversation shifts to how adults show up for kids and what real support looks like. Segment Three delivers a News Update on the recent New Orleans prison escape, sharing new details on the remaining fugitives and the systemic failures that allowed it to happen. In Segment Four, we break down new hip-hop drops from artists like Mavi & Earl Sweatshirt, Machine Gun Kelly, Key Glock, Ken Carson, and Lil Baby—highlighting trends and standout tracks. The episode wraps with a call to action, urging listeners to take one small step this week to make their circle feel more like a real community.

The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots.--In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-fifth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru H, so naturally, they went with I.The “I” mixtape:[SIDE I-1] (1) INTHEWHALE – Animals (2) The Ice Man's Band – People Make the World Go ‘Round (3) Icehouse – Walls (4) Ice Cube – Down for Whatever (5) Instant Funk – Never Let It Go Away [SIDE I-2] (1) Donnie Iris – Joking (2) The Impressions – I'm Loving Nothing (3) The Icicle Works – Starry Blue Eyed Wonder (4) Weldon Irvine – Morning Sunshine (5) Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain [END]Sonic Contributors to the thirty-fifth episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio podcast include: Lee Moses, Brothers Johnson, Holland-Dozier-Holland, James Todd Smith. Hip hop and jazz music have an intimate relationship. That's been true since the beginning. Our next guest is Shabaka Hutchings and while he might be a jazz musician, he is also a hip hop head who thoughtfully integrates his preferences into his most recent project “Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace”. The album is also his first as a flute player, an instrument he went to exceptional lengths to become familiar with. He is joined on the project by incredible artists such as Saul Williams, Carlos Niño, Laraaji, Esperanza Spalding, Brandee Younger and Floating Points. It's also the only place where you'll find both Andre 3000 and E L U C I D as featured guests. We talked with Shabaka about all of the above and we discussed his album pick for this episode - “Doris” by Earl Sweatshirt. Purchase "Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace" directly from Impulse Records

Dear Listener, Have you found yourself coming down with more consistent cases of nostalgia lately? Do you consider yourself a millennial? Well, if so, you might be soon buying a pricey concert ticket to one of the hottest trends in live music: The 20 year Anniversary Album Tour. Yes, your favorite album of 2004 (or perhaps 2014) can soon be heard live, in its entirety, front to back at a concert venue near you. But why is this becoming such a trend? Is it the pre-packaged social media ready presentation? Or that Millennials got deeper pockets now and will shell out big bucks on tickets (and a babysitter) to hear their favorite album played live? Or is it just Hollywood risk-aversion bleeding into the touring industry? As a jumping-off point, Saxon and Sam discuss an excellent recent article on Passion of the Weiss wondering on this very subject and then suss out whether Earl Sweatshirt really is touring ...too...much? Read: We Outside: Congrats, Your Favorite Album is Old Enough to Go on Tour by Pravash Trewn Subscribe to our Newsletter!
