Today I am joined on the podcast by John Harney of Blue Slate! We'll be chatting about Blue Slate's latest release, 'Beaker' which is to be released tomorrow and marks a new sound and direction with the band's music. On top of this, I'll be chatting to John about how he initially got into music, the ridiculous story of where the title for 'Beaker' even came from, how punk icons used to piss the general public off, American Hardcore, Henry Rollins and the love for the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Myself and John have been trying to get this podcast organised for what seems like over a year now so it was fantastic to finally get it recorded and John certainly did not disappoint.Blue Slate on Linktree Hosted on Acast. This episode's guest is author Steven Blush. His book American Hairmetal: Can't Get Enough has just been released. This is an expanded edition of the book originally released by Feral House in 2006.Interest in hair metal is as strong as it was over three decades ago. In the summer of 2022 Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard went out on a stadium tour with Poison, and Joan Jett as supporting acts. The tour brought in $173.5 million, making it the highest-grossing tour of either band's career. In 2016, Guns N' Roses launched their Not In This Lifetime...Tour. The tour was 2016's highest-earning per-city global concert tour and the fourth-highest-grossing overall that year. In 2017, the tour ranked as the second highest-grossing worldwide tour and the band continued to bring in huge numbers through 2023. American Hairmetal: Can't Get Enough features hundreds of photographs of bands including Poison, Cinderella, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Ratt, and Stryper. Wild quotes from the major players of the era including David Lee Roth, Jon Bon Jovi, Sebastian Bach, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, Bret Michaels, Don Dokken, and many of the era's unsung heroes. This expanded edition includes more photos, more quotes, and a new introduction by Chip Z'Nuff of Enuff Z'Nuff and an interview with Rik Fox of WASP. Steven Blush is an author, journalist, and filmmaker who is best known for his 2006 book American Hardcore and the movie of the same name. Boston hardcore/metal legends John Sox and Steve Grimes of The FU's join us on this our 200th episode. The FU's are one of the original American Hardcore bands emerging on the scene in 1981, being included on the now famous "This is Boston not LA" compilation. They followed up the compilation with an incredible run with three hardcore masterpieces "Kill For Christ"(1982), "My America"(1983), and "Do We Really Want To Hurt You"(1984) before changing their name to The Straw Dogs and releasing three more records. They have now reformed with original members Sox, Grimes, and drummer Bob Furapples with a great new record entitled "Death Squad Nostalgia". We go through the band's entire history including their appearance at the Gallery East reunion show in 2010. Enjoy! So, day three already. After the great and mighty Jarboe and Alcest, we now want to give some of you the chance to maybe discover a new band you might not have been giving attention by now: Sunflo'er from Potsdam in Upstate New York. Their latest album all these darlings and now me is bursting of energy and brimful with mighty, clever ideas and twists and turns that show a modern Hardcore band aiming for the sky. Enjoy our video-chat with the whole band! I did not know too much about Sunflo'er before this interview and me preparing for it. But listening through their discography and especially their latest album, I was not surprised because the label through which the four guys are releasing their music usually never fails in their roster-choices: Dark Trail Records . And they do not disappoint this time around either. Sunflo'er has made a giant leap and maybe released the modern American Hardcore album of 2022 next to Soul Glo and The Callous Daoboys. Therefore we talk about the record and the songwriting process behind it, but also about Wes Craven and why one of them has a box of Corn Dogs in his fridge! Enjoy!
On this episode of the show, we are joined by Jonathan Anastas, bassist of one of the original Boston straight edge hardcore bands - DYS. Also a member of the "Boston Crew" and the original bassist of Slapshot, Anastas has deep roots in the early days of American Hardcore. We had a great talk about Jonathan's hardcore beginnings with Decadence, DYS' formation, break up and reformation, and how the band is still active, relevant, and more popular than ever with a new deal coming in 2023. If that is not enough, we were also treated with a new track from Jonathan's solo project DYSbanded, which features DYS bandmate and trendsetter Dave Smalley on lead vocals... In December of 1981 Black Flag released their debut album. Though largely ignored upon its release by critics, the album is now considered and absolute classic of American Hardcore and the band itself paved the way that future DIY and indie bands would tour for years to come. Let's talk Black Flag, Damaged!

In September of 1980 The Dead Kennedys released their debut album. The stench of Reagan looms on the horizon, Jerry Brown is coming for your uncool niece, Harvey Milk's assassin only gets 7 years in prison (but serves less than that) and the threat of global nuclear holocaust is at an all time high, whats a bunch of angry leftist punks to do? Write a masterpiece of American Hardcore, that's what. Lets talk The Dead Kennedys, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables!

L.A. Guns dropped a new song three weeks ago. We're fashionably late, but have finally joined the party! This week we're summarizing one of the longest, most chaotic tales in rock history to the very best of our abilities all while nursing cocktails. "Never Enough" is the topic of the day, but since Vinnie really needed an L.A. Guns education and since we are on "Cocked & Loaded", we started off by watching the "Ballad of Jayne" music video before getting into the story of the band. We did catch a song off of their 1984 demo, "It's Not True", stop off to watch Phil Lewis be a baby rocker in Girl's "Hollywood Tease", then keep talking Guns history until we get to "Never Enough". We have to listen to "Malaria" while we're still feeling Cocked! Then it's back into a trip through Guns history, stopping off at 1996's Pantera-influenced "American Hardcore" to give "What I've Become" a listen, more history lessons until we arrive at 2020's "Renegades" album, we play "Crawl" before we arrive at 2021 and truly enjoy the gift of genuine, badass new L.A. Guns music in the new release, "Knock Me Down". We also slap on that new track from The Darkness, "Nobody Can See Me Cry" at the end. It's a long story, but at the Wet Tee Shirt Podcast, we keep our whistles wet and our admiration for Phil Lewis and Tracii Guns strong! Nothing but love on the podcast
Psychologist, life coach, heavy metal vocalist and podcaster Dr. Mike spoke to me about his spark, Steven Blush's book American Hardcore: A Tribal History.Dr. Mike's discovery of hardcore punk had a profound effect on his life and the way his sees the world. We dig into Blush's detailed recount of hardcore's history. The scene only lasted a decade, but it's influence has been felt by everyone from Dave Grohl to Flea. Dr. Mike and I explore hardcore's chaotic energy and the vast network of hardcore micro-scenes in towns and cities across North America. Links:Dr. MikeAmerican HardcoreThe Chair

It's time, Doc-heads! We're back and we're more like a family than ever before — with Grandpa Pete having senior moments and declaring his love for the "Big Brains" (?!?), Geoff Daddy letting you know that he's really disappointed, and Young Matt refusing to stop f'n around with those g'damn devil sticks. Hear all this and more in our new episode on American Hardcore. It's a classic, and OMG, there are SO MANY hc luminary talking heads in this one. But don't stress, ‘cause we sort it all out (by spending way too much time talking about just a select few key players, including Flea and xMobyx). See! We got you covered! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
This week, the DTD crew "Pumps the brakes" (Refused) on watching documentaries — which, strangely, makes the episode an easy entry point to our brand of punk podcast chaos. But don't worry, sports fans; the American Hardcore episode will be up next week. In the meantime, Pete and Geoff do what they do best: keep it punk. They ponder what they've learned and how they've grown. They also work to see how many obscure references to mid 90's hardcore 7”s they can shove in while they make fun of each other. And most excitingly, faithful listeners, you will be treated to a rare (and very spooky) screed from the PATRON saint of hardcore and Docs Till Death, Punko Destructo Esq. himself. So give a listen to this punk therapy session, then spend the the rest of the week — until our American Hardcore episode drops — pondering life‘s newest mystery: has Pete become a low-key Victory records fan? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/docstilldeath/message
We talked with Roger, Jeff and Hunter about their new EP Darkness Is Waiting. We discuss their roots and love for American Hardcore of past and present. We also chat about Furnace Fest, bed wetting, broken loofas, doom metal and the mickey police.
Today we speak to...Jack Grisham Jack Grisham (born July 22, 1961). He is the vocalist for the punk rock band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty), which emerged from the late 1970s Los Angeles hardcore punk rock scene, Which is described as being Punk hardcore. punk anarcho-punk deathrock and horror punk. We're not talking about Abba!An agnostic libertarian, Grisham challenges some of the "cult" like practices in today's groups and encourages you to think for yourself, live without fear, and tap the resource of power that resides within us all. Jack an author, a front-man, an actor, and a "two-bit" carny hypnotist. As a vocalist for T.S.O.L., and the Joykiller, he's released close to twenty full-length records and toured all over the world. Jack has been blamed for enlightening, and corrupting the moldable minds of our youth for years—he has also been credited for influencing many of the top bands of today. As an author he's released three books, all to mostly favorable reviews—no one says Jack is a horrible writer, it's just that he brings the horrible to life with such skill that at times you practically need to be sedated to read his prose. 'An American Demon', 'Untamed' and 'Code Blue a Love Story' have all burned their ways into the scary netherworld of the human psyche. As an actor, Jack plays himself, a lovable con-man that you can't help to root for—'Suburbia', 'Let It Rock', 'Punks Not Dead', 'American Hardcore', 'Rage', 'Urban Struggle' and 'The Other F-Word' have all been graced with his almost-as-large-as-life screen presence. Grisham has been clean and semi-serene since 1989. He gives motivational talks all over the USAYou can be sure that whatever Jack is involved in it is sure to challenge the senses and inflame the boundaries of what is decent and tame. One of the people that I've always wanted to speak with is my guest for Episode 144. Steven Blush! Mostly known for writing , "American Hardcore" along with the film of the same name, as well as "American Hair Metal", "Lost Rockers: Broken Dreams & Crashed Careers", "New York Rock: From the Rise of the Velvet Underground to the Fall of CBGB", the founder of "Seconds Magazine", and "The Art of the Interview". He's also a huge record collector and Hardcore historian. Steven invited me to his house in the West Village and gave me the opportunity to sit and talk about what he has done (and it's A LOT) and what he has in store for the near future and beyond. We connected very quickly and this one went by just as fast. I hope you enjoy this. Respect. Visit his website to check out what he's up to along with links to purchase all of his work at: https://stevenblush.com/ We close out the episode with three songs from the "American Hardcore" film. 1. SSD: Boiling Point 2. Articles of Faith: Bad Attitude 3. Battalion of Saints: My Mind's Diseased

Prepare to be castrated in outer space, scumdogs! Junk Food Dinner is celebrating GWARch this year the only way we know how: with our good friend Travis Olgin of the world-famous GWARCast! It's a sleazy one. Up first! Way back in the pre-9/11 days of yore, there was a movie called Heavyweights from 1995. A surprisingly high quotient of likable character actors (including Jerry Stiller), soon-to-be-famous comedic actors (like Kenan Thompson), and pre-fame super-scribes (Judd Apatow & Paul Feig), plus Skinny Weiner jokes pop up in this Disney-produced Ben Stiller kids movie about a fat camp. Don't worry about the title, it's just a single entendre. Next up! It's GWAR's Jerry-Springer-esque talk show parody / simulated snuff film It's Sleazy, from the year 2000. Have you ever wanted to see a man chop off his skinny weiner on stage in front of a crowd of half-rate werewolfmen? We've got the video for you! Also: feat Slymenstra Hymen. Finally! It's a third movie: American Hardcore: The History of American Punk Rock 1980-1986, which is exactly what the title suggests. Check it out for the Bad Brains, stick around for the unexpected Moby. All this plus more GWAR chat than you can handle, Feldman in Neverland, the Zombie Dog Celebrity Scene, horror comedy musical review, the time Kevin didn't get to party with Meatloaf or Fairuza Balk, the mystery of a the third film recommendation, the death of shared universes, some wild call-in fiascos, a double dose of sad musical nerd news and a single heaping of non-musical sad nerd news, how to pronounce (and spell!) our guest's name, the inventor of the Brillo pad, somebody from Pete & Pete, somehow nobody makes a Goldberg/Spear joke, four men drool over Ben Stiller's muscles, more fun with casual racism in a Disney film, cigarette violence, krazy kall-ins, a brand-new plea for your hard-earned dollars, bad parenting, embarassing admissions, the fear of god, our weekly news plus Blu-ray Picks and a whole lot more! Wash this out of your life. This record is ground zero for American Hardcore. YOU DON’T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don’t know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don’t know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). This week's episode is a big one, Black Flag's all time classic: Damaged! There are few bands that can stand the test of time like Sick of It All. It’s with great honor that I welcome Lou Koller, Sick of It All’s frontman, to the Everything Went Black Podcast. This episode brought to you by Savage Gold Coffee #staygold
