Don Lucoff on Denver Jazz Fest

Ryan Estes sits down with Don Lucoff, founder of DL Media and Artistic Director of the Denver Jazz Fest. Don has spent nearly four decades in jazz as a publicist, producer, and festival programmer, working with legendary artists and labels like Impulse and Blue Note. Now he is helping build a national caliber jazz festival right here in Denver. The State of Jazz Don reflects on how dramatically jazz media coverage has changed. There was a time when major outlets regularly reviewed jazz records and featured artists on national television. Today, most of that coverage has vanished. Yet jazz itself has not disappeared. It continues to shape modern music. Artists like Kendrick Lamar have collaborated with jazz musicians such as Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper. The influence is everywhere. As Don puts it, jazz can sell everything but itself. It is deeply embedded in popular culture, even if it is no longer center stage in mainstream media. Why Denver Is a Jazz City Denver has a stronger jazz pedigree than many people realize. The Front Range is home to major jazz education programs at the University of Northern Colorado, University of Denver, University of Colorado Boulder, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Colorado State University. These institutions consistently produce world class players. Historically, Five Points was known as the Harlem of the West, a vital stop for touring jazz musicians crossing the country. Add the Beat Generation passing through town and you have a city that has long been part of America's cultural and musical story. Inside Denver Jazz Fest The Denver Jazz Fest spans 15 venues across Denver and includes performances in Boulder County. It blends national headliners with respected local artists, creating a citywide celebration. This year's lineup includes Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis, Bob James, and John Beasley. The festival also honors the centenary of Miles Davis and John Coltrane with special tribute performances, including a presentation of A Love Supreme by Denver saxophonist Keith Oxman. The goal is inclusivity and accessibility. Whether you are a lifelong jazz fan or just jazz curious, there is a show for you. Where to Start Listening For new listeners, Don recommends classics from the Blue Note catalog such as Lee Morgan's Search for the New Land, Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage, Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil, and Grant Green's Idle Moments. From Impulse, he points to John Coltrane's Crescent and A Love Supreme, Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda, and Pharoah Sanders' Thembi. These records are not homework. They are entry points into a vast and vibrant tradition. Final Takeaway Don's career proves one thing. You may not get rich in jazz, but you can build a life around passion, community, and great music. Denver Jazz Fest is more than a series of concerts. It is a statement that this city values artistry, education, and cultural history. Learn more and get tickets at denverjazz.org. See you there.

STANDARSEMANAL.-giant steps.-VINILOS MITICOS DEL JAZZ.- BOBBY HUTCHERSON-Cirrus 1974.-JAZZACTUALIDAD.-XAVIER CARLES - GERMANS HUMANS. Título: Cirrus. Músico: Bobby Hutcherson. Acompañantes: Ray Drummond (b); Larry Hancock (dm); Kenneth Nash (perc); Bill Henderson (Piano, Electric Piano, Fender Rhodes); Harold Land y Emanuel Boyd (sa y flt); Woody Shaw (tp). Fecha de Grabación: 1974. 17 y 18 abril. Lugar de Grabación: New York. Sello Discográfico: Blue Note. Nº de temas: 5. Formato: LP.

RIP Bob Weir 1947-2026 The passing of Bob Weir this last week brought us all shock and sadness. Speaking for myself I wasn't ready for Ace to be gone, and I know it will hurt for a long time. Since there there have appeared countless tributes and appreciations for his talent, character and life. I won't try to add another one here. What I've decided on is to present to you this week a show that meant alot to me, that took place back when I was doing a Grateful Dead show on KOPN radio in Columbia Missouri. This show took place in an intimate venue called the Blue Note in Columbia Missouri back on November 2nd, 2000. We were thrilled to have Ratdog come to our town, and to be playing across the street from our station. I think they put on a great show and I decided to play that here on the Deadpod in its entirety this week and next as my remembrance of Bob. Vérforraló, békebeli vagy éppen avantgárd dallamok, összekoccanó poharak és izzó tekintetek – jazzklubokba járni azért jó, mert ezek a mágikus helyek a félhomályban születő improvizációk otthonai, ahol a zenészek és a közönség közös energiája élteti azt a műfajt, amelyért milliók rajonganak világszerte. Elég csak a legendás Village Vanguardra, aRonnie Scott'sra vagy a Blue Note egyre bővülő hálózatára gondolni. De mi a helyzet Budapesten? Manuela Furnari"Paolo Conte. Ha all'attivo diverse presentazioni e partecipazioni a documentari (Paolo Conte.

Ravi Coltrane with Marcus MillerMarcus Miller interviews Ravi Coltrane about his musical evolution and the dual legacy of his parents, Alice and John Coltrane. This insightful and candid talk, recorded live on the Journey of Jazz cruise, covers the challenges of growing up under the shadow of a jazz icon and finding one's own voice through the music.Key TakeawaysThe episode is a conversation between host Marcus Miller and guest Ravi Coltrane, focusing on Ravi's development as a jazz saxophonist.Ravi's father, John Coltrane, passed away in 1967 when Ravi was 2 years old, leaving Ravi to be raised by his mother, Alice Coltrane. Ravi notes that his father's instruments are currently in his stateroom.Ravi began his musical journey playing the clarinet throughout junior high and high school. He switched to the soprano saxophone at age 16 after his mother gave it to him for his birthday as a hint, later moving to the tenor saxophone.Ravi did not initially feel pressure from his famous last name because, during the 1970s in the San Fernando Valley where he grew up, John Coltrane was still considered "underground" or "counter culture".The death of Ravi's older brother, John Jr., in an automobile accident when Ravi was 17, caused a "void" that Ravi later filled by studying his father's music. Ravi began listening to his father's records to gain answers for questions asked at parties, and through this, the music "hit" him.Ravi worked with key members of the John Coltrane Quartet, including joining drummer Elvin Jones's band in 1991 (though he felt he was "prematurely" ready) and later working with pianist McCoy Tyner in the 2000s.Ravi and Marcus discuss the meaning of being "ready" to perform at a high level, noting that it means being "prepared to do the job properly" and recognizing that evolution and learning are continuous processes.Host and Guest InfoHost: Lee Mergner (introduction), Marcus Miller (interview).Guest: Ravi Coltrane. This talk was recorded during the Journey of Jazz cruise. Marcus Miller provided the theme music, which is a clip from his song "High Life" on his album Aphrodesia on Blue Note. The talk was captured by Brian Ratchkco and his production team.Send us a text

For Mark Whitwell, music was always a temple. In the jazz clubs of New York such as Village Vanguard, Blue Note, and Sweet Basil, he felt the power of true presence. In this conversation, Mark is joined by Tony Glausi, a trumpet player and composer who carries the living jazz tradition with profound originality. Over the course of a month practicing together in Bali, a friendship formed through daily Yoga, shared breath, and an unshakable love for music. Tony opens up about the journey that brought him here. From his roots in a large Mormon family to years of exploring Buddhism, psychedelics, and the creative highs and lows of the music industry, he shares how Yoga has become his ground. Mark and Tony speak candidly about sobriety, the myth of the tortured artist, and what it means to truly merge with the music. Tony Glausi is a New York-based musician devoted to the jazz tradition. Through trumpet, piano, and composition, he explores the meeting point of Yoga and sound for the real life of every person. His most recent album, Awaken, came from a time of injury, reflection, and a deep return to what matters most.  Key Takeaways Yoga of Breath and Sound – Music and Yoga meet in the breath, in the steady exhale, and in the felt experience of being fully alive. Sobriety and Clarity – Letting go of substances isn't a loss. It is the return to real perception and sustainable joy. From Dogma to Direct Experience – Yoga isn't a belief system. It's how we are with what is. Horizontal Intimacy as the Foundation for Art – Real artistry comes through being fully with the life around us. The End of the Tortured Artist – Art does not need to come from suffering. With real Yoga, artists can thrive and create from wholeness. Concerts as Ceremony – Tony envisions a new kind of performance that begins in silence, in practice, in true receptivity. In part one of this latest episode on Vinyl Community Podcasts, host David Bianco from the Safe & Sound Texas Audio Excursion YouTube channel sits down for a unique and insightful conversation with Don MacInnis, owner of the legendary vinyl pressing plant Record Technology Incorporated (RTI). For decades, RTI has been considered one of the gold standards in audiophile-grade vinyl manufacturing, producing records for labels like Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, Blue Note, Analogue Productions, and countless independent artists who are committed to exceptional sound. What started as a three-day temp agency assignment in 1983, leading to Don and his wife purchasing the company from founder Bill Bauer in March 1992, has culminated in a life spent crafting and honing some of the signature sounds in your very record collection.  David and Don dive deep into the craft of vinyl production—from the technical challenges of plating and pressing to the everyday decisions that determine whether a record becomes a treasured listening experience or one that misses the mark. Don shares stories from the early days of RTI, including how the company grew during the original heyday of vinyl, weathered the rise of CDs, and ultimately found renewed purpose during the modern vinyl resurgence. David's thoughtful questions and genuine passion for analog sound make this conversation both accessible and deeply educational. Whether you're a seasoned vinyl enthusiast, a newcomer curious about what makes audiophile pressings special, or simply fascinated by the intersection of art and manufacturing, this episode provides a rich and engaging look at one of the most respected names in the industry. A must-listen for anyone who believes music should be felt as much as heard.

When does Afro Blue and Smells Like Teen Spirit belong on the same record? When it's a Robert Glasper album! In 2012, Glasper's Black Radio brought together artists like Erykah Badu to bring a jazz standard, Afro Blue, back into the popular music canon. Black Radio hit #1 on the jazz charts, while simultaneously reaching #4 on the hip-hop R&B charts and #15 on the Top 200. The Blue Note pianist has been bending genres since the 90s, bringing together the best of traditional jazz and weaving it seamlessly with R&B, hip-hop, soul and rock & roll. And it all fits, because Glasper is equally at home in all of these categories. He grew up listening to all kinds of music, like Nirvana, Billy Joel, Busta Rhymes -- everything. Black Radio, he says, was a way to put his "life on wax". Rob Harvilla from 60 Songs to Explain the 90s: The 2000s joins Adam and Peter to dive into what makes this album great, and how it refutes from any attempt to categorize it. From the J. Dilla Influence, to Casey Benjamin's album-defining flute, to the Erykah Badu of it all, you'll never hear this album the same way again. And this album inspired what is possibly our best YHI outro yet.
