When does Afro Blue and Smells Like Teen Spirit belong on the same record? When it's a Robert Glasper album! In 2012, Glasper's Black Radio brought together artists like Erykah Badu to bring a jazz standard, Afro Blue, back into the popular music canon. Black Radio hit #1 on the jazz charts, while simultaneously reaching #4 on the hip-hop R&B charts and #15 on the Top 200. The Blue Note pianist has been bending genres since the 90s, bringing together the best of traditional jazz and weaving it seamlessly with R&B, hip-hop, soul and rock & roll. And it all fits, because Glasper is equally at home in all of these categories. He grew up listening to all kinds of music, like Nirvana, Billy Joel, Busta Rhymes -- everything. Black Radio, he says, was a way to put his "life on wax". Rob Harvilla from 60 Songs to Explain the 90s: The 2000s joins Adam and Peter to dive into what makes this album great, and how it refutes from any attempt to categorize it. From the J. Dilla Influence, to Casey Benjamin's album-defining flute, to the Erykah Badu of it all, you'll never hear this album the same way again. And this album inspired what is possibly our best YHI outro yet. Let us know if you agree!
Sus interpretaciones de 'Hum Drum Blues' de Oscar Brown, Jr. y 11 estándares (incluyendo ' Falling in Love With Love ', ' Dat Dere ', ' Baltimore Oriole ' y ' I'm a Fool to Want You ') son a la vez vibrantes y evocadoras".

A new California congressional map, commissioned by Democrats, seeks to counter Texas’ proposed gerrymandering. The man who drew the map had never drawn a partisan one before. Californians are likely headed to the ballot box in November for a special election on redistricting – and the state is likely headed to court over the scheme. Pianist, composer, and producer Duke Pearson (born August 17, 1932) is hardly a household name, but his influence on jazz music is far out of proportion to his personal fame. In addition to his compositions like "Jeanine" being accepted as jazz standards, his behind-the-scenes work as producer and arranger on a plethora of Blue Note records contributed immeasurably to that label's success in its heyday. His piano playing and compositions were essential to the success of the Donald Byrd / Pepper Adams quintet, and for several years his New York-based big band and 8-10 piece bands featured many of the best jazz musicians in the city, and his fresh innovative original writing.

Zev Feldman, a.k.a. the “Jazz Detective,” has turned his crate-digging passion into a career: He tracks down previously unreleased recordings and jumps through the necessary hoops to get them released, often in lavish packages for his label, Resonance Records. This past Record Store Day featured such Feldman finds as live albums from Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Dorham and Charles Mingus plus a limited-edition double album of previously unreleased Patsy Cline performances, Imagine That: The Lost Recordings (1954-1963). Feldman also co-produced last year's incendiary Blue Note release from McToy Tyner and Joe Henderson, Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs. In this expansive conversation, Feldman tells his Jazz Detective origin story and describes how he finds these recordings (or vice versa), he gets specific about the importance of Record Store Day and these projects' tight margins, and he reveals his white whales. Tonight's Jazz Feature is a fine album that never saw the light of day until the early 80's despite being recorded in August 1963. It was the first album by trumpeter Richard "Blue" Mitchell for Blue Note Records. It was given a catalogue number and advertised in the Blue Note brochure but never released. It's a fine date with Blue on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone. Joe also did most of the arrangements on this date as well. Leo Wright is here on alto saxophone, Herbie Hancock is on piano, Gene Taylor on bass and Roy Brooks is on drums. Two standards and four original tunes make up this fine date. It simply got lost in the shuffle but finally was issued after research into the Blue Note files. It's a fine and enjoyable date with some solid playing by all. Enjoy "Step Lightly" as tonight's Jazz Feature.

Does it get any better than that ARP bass line on “Chameleon”? That's right, it's Herbie time! Join Peter and Adam as we explore Herbie Hancock's explosive breakout from Blue Note jazz man to platinum-selling Headhunter. Transport your ears to an afro-futuristic daydream as we dissect Herbie's funk-jazz era – and the cast of characters that helped push jazz records back onto the Pop charts. You'll hear stem breakdowns of Paul Jackson's brilliant bass grooves, the magic of Mike Clark's “Oakland sound” drums, and, of course, much geeking out over Herbie's mind-bending synth and electric keyboard experiments (excuse our stank-faces). From Fat Albert Rotunda (1969) through the slept-on Sunlight (1978), we ask: is this Herbie at his greatest?
Send us a textWe're taking a break from the interviews this week to catch up on a couple of reviews, even though we're still checking in with some products sent to us by our friends from last week's episode! Crossroads Bourbon and Special Reserve Bourbon, both from Blue Note, are two well-refined and finely crafted products that satisfy consumers on both ends of the their wallet, while still giving them the opportunity to celebrate the incredible ability of bourbon to be both flexible and familiar, at the same time. We give it the ol' TIMBP review treatment before diving into a bit of a lengthy discussion on the state of Booker's Bourbon in 2025 and how it could go south quickly. Plus, we give our thoughts on Dragon Ball Daima during Tips 'n' Bits.
