We spin our movie category wheel and choose a movie every week for movie night.
Shanley has spun 'I Was in the Pictures!', a category in which the spinner chooses an old timey movie star and explores their filmography. Overwhelmed with the guilt and shame of having chosen some of this season's greatest stinkers, Shanley tries to redeem herself by picking something worth watching. Will she succeed? Find out on this week's selection episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel.
After a long impromptu hiatus the crew is back in a huge way, this time to review Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021). In this week's review episode we ponder big questions like 'What's the best way to adapt a video game to film?', 'How does the pacing of a video game translate to screen?', and 'Do we remember much of this movie we saw three months ago?' All these deep conversations and more in this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
Since the early 90's Hollywood has tried to adapt (or afapt?) popular video game properties to film. It usually doesn't go so well. Matt spun the exciting (if misspelled) Video Game Afaptation category and now has to choose from three decades worth of material that range from outrageously bad to only just sort of bad. Are you game for this episode?!
FOR MATURE LISTENERS ONLY! This week the crew watches 1999's iconically raunchy coming of age film American Pie. This week's episode is full of the hosts exploring their own history with this film as well as their own sexual experiences. Much like American Pie itself, this episode is a solid balance between sensuality and sentiment. Listen for yourself if you dare!
Join us on a journey through film history and Jimi's pubescent awakening. After spinning 'Wanna Tap It', Jimi looks back through the 90's and the early 00's to see his crushes, loves, and lusts of yesteryear. Will you agree with his type? Will this be awkward and off-putting? Find out on this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
You think you know the USA's 16 president? Think again! This 2011 film delves beyond the legend of Abraham Lincoln to reveal the man behind the legend and that man is a vampire hunter. Seeking revenge on his mother's killer, Abraham finds more than he bargained for and is thrust into the dark underworld of vampires. Is the film any good? Tune in to find out what we think!
Four-time 'Movie Jar' spinner, Shanley has been forced to break her method of nominations. Instead of her customary five nominees, this week she only has three from which to choose--Batman Forever, Tower Heist, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Matt and Jimi feel absolutely certain that they know what she'll choose. Do you?!
When Matt chooses 1999's The Mummy for Strictly Shanley, the Wheelhouse is full of a mixture of elation and irritation. Jimi, who hates The Mummy perhaps because he doesn't have a soul, starts off this episode at a high 11 and continuously becomes more enraged. Matt and Shanley, however, are filled with nostalgic glee. Will this late 90's adventure comedy be the chasm that tears the podcast apart?! Find out on this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
Matt spun this week and got Strictly Shanley, the category in which Shanley has free and total reign over the nominees. To make matters worse, this time, Matt doesn't even know the nominees prior to recording. Shanley's latest selections have been some of the crew's least enjoyed movies lately, so will this continue Shanley's unholy tyranny? Find out by listening in to this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
You know the movie, you know the influence it's had on film and pop culture, maybe you've even heard a podcast or two talking about it, but never before this episode have you heard three people really break down the deep issues that matter in James Cameron's 1984 masterpiece The Terminator. In our post watch discussion, we'll speculate on the origins of the stains on Reese's sweats, and criticize the packaging of Ginger's bread. The crew really gives this movie the fine-toothed examination for which the world has long awaited. Tune in and hear it for yourself!
Jimi spun 'Pick-a-Parent Recommendation' and has the choice between any of our parents' vastly diverse movie tastes. The parent he ends up choosing (no spoilers here) ends up drafting a slew of nominees that boast the highest Tomatometer scores we've ever had on this show. This could be the chance for the crew to watch a really good movie? Find out on this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
Imagine a film that combines elements from Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Twilight, Divergent, and maybe a little bit of Lizzy McGuire. Would all of that be too much for one cohesive story? Yes. Certainly yes. It's with no pun intended when said that this movie sucks! It's 2014's Vampire Academy starring Season of the Witch's own Claire Foy and the Weekly Watch Wheel crew are enrolled for one hell of an experience!
On this week's episode, Shanley has spun an elaborate category, 'The One Where We Actually Roll the Dice'. This category requires that the spinner roll a die and the number that is rolled determines the number of degrees of separation from the last movie we watched. Shanley rolled a one. This means that she has to select a movie that has a person in its cast or crew that worked on Season of the Witch (2011). With greats like Nicolas Cage, Ron Pearlman, Christopher Lee, and others, we are sure to have a diverse list of nominees. The question is, do we want to watch any of them?!
Where does Nicolas Cage's Filmography and Period Pieces intersect? At 2011's oddity Season of the Witch. This film's story arc is absolutely baffling. Over the course of this narrative the Weekly Watch Wheel crew foresaw a half-dozen better conclusions but were unable to predict where this movie lands. On this week's episode, Matt and Jimi struggle to maintain focus on such a strange movie, while Shanley struggles to maintain consciousness!
Last week, guest host Ariel spun Venn Diagram which requires that the nominees meet the qualifications of both of two other categories. She then proceeded to spin 'Cranberry Juice (Period Piece)' and 'Nicolas Cage Filmography'. Can Matt find enough nominees that are both Nic Cage movies as well as Period Pieces? Listen to this week's selection episode to find out!
The crew had the pleasure of welcoming a guest host onto this week's episode--friend of the podcast, Ariel! This week's episode digs into the 1998 action flick, Small Soldiers starring Tommy Lee Jones, Kirsten Dunst, and that kid from The Patriot! This film has a lot to discuss, but will the crew and their guest be able to stay on topic? Not likely, but find out for sure by listening to this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
On this week's episode, the Crew looks to a childhood friend for movie night nominees. But when said friend is unavailable for a phone call, Jimi, Matt, and Shanley must blindly sift through his nominees. Full of gumbo and hurricane cocktails, the hosts bring a messy vibe of lethargy as well as distraction. This episode was a lot of fun, and you won't believe what movie was chosen!
Imagine, if you will, you're living in 1996, 2pac has died but at least Michael Bay is making a grounded action movie about domestic terrorists taking over the island of Alcatraz (for some reason). If that appeals to you, you won't believe what we have in store for you this week! This classic 90's action movie has a great cast including Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, and a bunch of people you've seen in other movies! The Weekly Watch Wheel crew had some fun with this movie and you'll hear all about it in this week's episode!
She's done it again, folks! Shanley has somehow wo-manifested pulling Movie Jar for the third time! The crew had a fun time recording this short and sweet selection episode. Aside from the two specific movies pulled from the jar, Shanley also tours the filmography of iconic film auteur, one Michael Bay. What will she choose? We all know that Shanley has an insatiable thirst for power, but how will she use it? For good? For Evil? Find out on this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
Travel with the crew to the year 1999 where jeans were baggy and plastic was tinted and translucent. Matt chose MTV Studios' Varsity Blues, a film about sex, drugs, and footy footy football. Starring James Van Der Beek, Paul Walker, and John Voight, this film mixes the mischief of teens with deep dramatic elements. Also, Matt apparently 'wanted to tap it', whatever that means! Listen in to this week's episode and join the fun!
Not gonna lie, this week it gets weird when liquor's poured and Matt takes the crew on a walk through his pubescent awakening. Matt's spin yielded 'Wanna Tap It!', the category highlighting carnally-influential films from the spinner's youth. It isn't long before a type and pattern emerge amongst Matt's numerous nominees this week. Find out Matt's type and other unwanted information on this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
Jimi spun and chose this kickin' classic, 3 Ninjas (1992). The Weekly Watch Wheel crew is not in unanimous agreement over this one and they're not pulling punches. Can they set aside their differences and coherently talk through Jimi's selection? No, definitely not coherently!
This first selection episode of season 2 is a major nostalgia fest! Jimi spun 'Does This Hold Up?' and he takes the rest of the crew on a journey through his childhood. With exclusively nominees from the 90's this episode is full of memories of dinosaurs, ninjas, and all around tom foolery. Whether or not you're a child of the 90's, there's enough obscurity in this week's episode to teach you a thing or two. Tune in now!
We're back! We've missed rattling around the Wheel House and how good it feels to finally return to that sweet, sweet spinning! In this episode the crew shares some of the news and updates for the coming season. The Wheel has underwent some upgrades and Jimi takes this season's inaugural spin. What will it be? Find out on this season's premier of The Weekly Watch Wheel.
We've finished our first year of the podcast! This year was a lot of fun. So for our year wrap up episode, we're looking back on our experiences this past year, naming some favorite experiences, and looking on to the year to come. Check out the fun on this special episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
What a weird movie! Circa 1959 from the Mexican film industry comes this morality propaganda piece complete with odd lore and a peppering of accidental racism. Recorded on Christmas Eve, this episode has the crew enjoying some sweet hors d'oeuvres and even sweeter friendship. Step into the wheelhouse and join us for a Christmas Eve extravaganza! This is our Christmas Special and we all too are Christmas-special!
Shanley has spun Unknown Christmas Movie and has definitely pulled out all of the stops. There are some truly bizarre nominations this week. Matt and Jimi also brought along some oddities that make Shanley truly considering a nomination that isn't one of her own. What will she choose? Find out on this week's episode of the Weekly Watch Wheel! **This will be the final film for 2021. After this post watch discussion, the Crew will take January off and the show will resume February 2022!
For this evening's Spiked Eggnog, we have for you 'The Night Before' (2015). This film is great for the laughs and also for some good warm feelings. In this episode the Weekly Watch Wheel crew ponders on friendship, substance use, and adulthood. Not gonna lie, it gets kinda real at parts! But not to worry, there's lots of nonsense and tomfoolery as usual and the holiday special continues spinning!
For our second Holiday Spin Matt pulled 'Spiked Eggnog', Christmas comedies with adult humor. This episode explores some of the best Christmas movies with an edge including A Bad Mom's Christmas (2017), Office Christmas Party (2016), and more! Jimi is sure that Matt is going to pick something that will disappoint him. Will he be right? Find out on this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
Well. This episode begins with a disaster! After recording for nearly two hours, the laptop crashed and the crew had to start all over. Matt is very upset and doesn't hide it! Jimi has to take the reins just to keep the show on the rails! Thankfully, the crew is discussing Chris Columbus' 1996 holiday classic Jingle All the Way. This first review in our holiday special is a lot of fun, listen in and join the romp!
It's the most wonderful time of the year at the Wheel House and we're kicking off a brand new month-long holiday special! Jimi did the honors of opening our Christmas season with Feliz NaviDAD, a category focusing on Dads at Christmas. Matt and Shanley both bring in some strong recommendations, but will Jimi pick a nomination that isn't his own? Not likely, but possibly! But also, not likely.
This one's a doozie, that's for sure. Shanley chose 2018's Kickboxer Retaliation, the fifth in Van Damme's Kickboxer franchise. This film is full of mystical (if nonsensical) proverbs from a fifty-something Van Damme and a hero with an odd choice of motivations and priorities. This will be our final normal episode for the year before we kick into our holiday special, so hop aboard! ('cause there's a train in this movie too, or something).
Shanley's Weekly Watch Wheel wish has come true --she's spun movie jar (after two or three re-spins, but who's counting?). From the Movie Jar, she can choose from The Room (2003), The Mummy (2017), and Jean-Claude Van Damme. This will be our last regular spin of the year before going into our Holiday Special. What will she choose? Will it suck? Almost certainly, yeah. Tune in and find out which she picks!
Matt's choice this week was Frank Miller's 2008 experimental noir, The Spirit. The Weekly Watch Wheel crew doesn't seem to know exactly what to do with this odd fever dream of a film. One thing they all can agree upon is that Samuel L. Jackson is great in it. What's the deal with the cats? What's the deal with eggs? We may not know, but we'll be darn sure to ramble on about it for over three hours. Join us on this week's episode into the mean streets of Central City and get ready to be really confused!
Matt has again spun Failed Super Hero Franchise and again our fates in his dorky, dweeby little hands. Matt has promised an entirely new roster of nominees but will the result than any different than last time? After all, last time, the crew had to re-watch and re-record because this category seems to be cursed. We'll see what he has in store for us on this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
Jimi chose this 1981 sequel to Mad Max, a film none of us have ever seen. In this episode, we highlight some of our favorite aspects of the movie while still managing to get extremely sidetracked with all sorts of tomfoolery and nonsense. This week's recording is no less chaotic than the worst post-apocalyptic wasteland you could possibly imagine!
Jimi's got his work cut out for him this week. In this episode, Jimi has prepared a list of possible qualifying films pending confirmation that neither Shanley nor Matt have seen the preceding installment. With the aim to choose a sequel that is considered superior to its predecessor, Jimi has collected a list of gems spanning the decades. Could this lead to the objective best movie on our lists? Find out on this week's episode of The (friggen) Weekly Watch Wheel!
Adam Sandler is one of the greats, no questions asked. HOWEVER, he really knows how to put out a healthy supply of poop fests too, but this 2015 Netflix original film might take the cow pie! Much of the Weekly Watch Wheel crew love westerns but will this comedy-western top our rankings? Spoiler Alert: No. No it will not. But at least we had some fun. Sorta.
All Hallow's Wheel was a screamin' time, but the crew is back spinning that ol' faithful Weekly Watch Wheel again. Shanley took the lead and landed Adam Sandler Filmography, a category we've not yet spun! The Sand Man is a comedy legend with a filmography that varies from classics to terrible (and everything in between). Who know's what Shanley will sentence upon us, but we're guessing it's not going to be Billy Madison.
For the first time in Weekly Watch Wheel History, the crew watched two movies for the week. When the teams choice of 'The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad' proved to be a topical disappointment, the crew calls an audible and watches Matt's original choice of 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark'. Will this final week of All Hallows Wheel prove to be an anti climax or end off with a bang? Find out on this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
On this final spin for All Hallow's Wheel 2021, Matt spun 'Jr. Jack' (horror movies for kids). This week we look into some of our favorites from our childhood and some movies that we never got around to seeing. Nightmare Before Christmas and Goosebumps are just some of the spooky nominees thrown in for consideration. Will Matt pick a classic or gamble the final spin on a wild card? Find out on this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
Cast your imagination to a far flung age --the year 1997. A time where it was perfectly acceptable to make a movie about a magic homicidal leprechaun and his ambitions to marry alien royalty. You can't make this stuff up. All Hallow's Wheel continues for Jimi's selection of Leprechaun 4 In Space, or as we like to call it Leprech4un 4 in Sp4ce. Will we like the movie? Spoiler Alert: not really, but some of us kinda do...
All Hallow's Wheel continues this week in what will go down in history as our least coherent episode! As Jimi brings to the group his three nominees, and Matt and Shanley each bring one, the focus of the episode struggles to withstand the baking of cookies, a phone call, and the delirium of sleep depravity. Which horror franchise's fourth installment (or later) will win the night for this week's movie night?! Listen in and find out!
After Shanley rolled 'No One's Seen this Movie in 50 Years', the crew didn't know what to expect. She chose 1959's House on Haunted Hill, starring Vincent Price. Shanley seems to have found a new personal hero in one of the characters and Matt and Jimi struggle to not interrupt for fear of sounding misogynistic. Will this iconic relic pass the mustard with the crew? Find out on this week's episode of the Weekly Watch Wheel!
On our inaugural All Hallow's Wheel episode, Shanley combs through classics and nominates three iconic horror films. Matt and Jimi (who were only supposed to bring one film each) can't help but geek out about their many finds from their research. This is a great start to the next three weeks of spooktacular fun!
It's a strange world in which we find ourselves. Dogs and Cats speak english and may or may not be a part of a bustling economy. Though the construct of this society seems to baffle the Weekly Watch Wheel crew, one thing's for sure --THE PARTY NEVER STOPS! This episode also has a special reveal at the end, so make sure to listen all the way through!
Heaven help us! Matt has spun The Air Bud Cinematic Universe, a horrendous world we haven't visited since Russell Maddness. Matt has concocted a 'fully immersive experience' in this week's selection episode; Jimi and Shanley just want to survive the night. All this and more in this week's episode of The Weekly Watch Wheel!
Matt stands alone in this episode of the Weekly Watch Wheel when neither Shanley or Jimi seem to catch his enthusiasm for the Muppets. Jimi is baffled by Matt's unwavering adoring of the franchise and Shanley might be making up words. Listen in and join us for this post-watch discussion on The Muppet Movie (1979)!
Prepare yourself for a journey through time into Matt's childhood. Jimi was dismayed to see that he spun 'Strictly Matt' thus losing his opportunity to nominate films. On this week's selection episode, it's slim pickin's as Jimi parses through some of Matt's most sentimental films. If for no one else, it'll be a fun night for one of us!
In the late 90's, budding action star Will Smith turned down some odd sci fi movie called the Matrix. Instead he signed on for a bombastic steampunk adventure by the name of Wild Wild West, released 1999. Along with Smith's swagger comes intrigue, excitement, a couple of bare buttocks, and one hell of a good theme song. Join the Weekly Watch Wheel crew as they're transported to the old West and the action tropes of the 1990's.
The Golden Razzies are annual awards granted to the industry's worst films. In this selection episode, Shanley combs through a list of the most unanimously panned movies from the last thirty years. Along the way, we go on tangents about fast food, odd collectables, and a guest phone call from one of Jimi's friends. Pop into the Wheel House and join us on this week's episode of the Weekly Watch Wheel!
