The show covered a developing investigation into suspicious items found in Glendale, as well as a motorcycle officer involved in an accident with injuries in Garden Grove. A “WHIP” segment touched on Elon Musk’s net worth. Mark Thompson talked about doing voiceover work for an NFL commercial. Tim shared the story of one of his framed newspaper articles that had been auctioned off years ago and unexpectedly made its way back. Mark also mentioned a Huell Howser photo displayed on his nightstand. Conway recalled giving Jay Leno his headshot to hang in Leno’s garage, along with a funny story from a Comedy & Magic Club show in Hermosa Beach. The conversation drifted to another humorous anecdote involving the song “American Pie.” The hour wrapped up with discussion about whether “American Pie” has ever been covered by other artists, noting that Don McLean often performed the song twice during his concerts. The segment ended with talk about an Adam Carolla vlog in which Carolla humorously tells people at Home Depot that their project ideas aren’t going to work. Iconic scenes, that one quote, ridiculous situations and show-stealing characters, find out if Naomi thinks American Pie was really THAT wild… or pure nostalgia. New developments in the investigation into a high school cheerleader found dead on a cruise ship. There have been questions about why she and her stepbrother, who the family says is a suspect, were sharing a room on the trip. Today the stepbrother's mother took the stand saying Anna, her stepbrother, and another family member also staying in that room were super close, calling them “The Three Amigos.” And a possible motive revealed for the suspected D.C. pipe bomber. The attempted attacks happened after the 2020 Presidential Election and now we're learning the suspect, Brian Cole Jr. thought that election was rigged. Les Trent is in D.C. with the latest. Plus, we're seeing new video of actress Tara Reid at a hotel bar before she ended up slumped over in a hospital. The American Pie star claims her drink was spiked and this man says she's accusing him of doing it. Now in an Inside Edition exclusive, he tells Alison Hall it never happened. And along with “White Christmas” and “Jingle Bells” this season, you're also hearing offbeat holiday songs such as “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”, which just landed on a list of the worst Christmas songs of all time. "In the blink of a crinkling eye, I'm sinking, our fingers entwined." This week, we're deep diving one of The Tortured Poets Department's most nostalgic and playful tracks: "So High School." We explore how this Aaron Dessner collaboration captures the giddiness of adult romance that feels refreshingly simple and unguarded—like being transported back to those butterflies-in-your-stomach moments of teenage crushes. From twinkling lights to truth or dare, we unpack how Taylor Swift uses high school imagery not to describe where she is, but how love makes her feel. Spoiler: we giggle our way through this episode like the high schoolers we once were. Barry and Abigail discuss Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits and sample Wild Dog – Pale Ale and Wild Dog – Shempa Ale from Tiemann Beer in Lusaka, Zambia; Strawberry Rhubarb from New Glarus Brewing Company in New Glarus, Wisconsin; Coconut Key Lime Pie Drips and Mischievous Grin from Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, Iowa; and Gallo / Famosa from Cervecería Centro Americana in Guatemala City, Guatemala.Read about how the Money for Nothing music video came to be, or watch the video. We first sampled New Glarus on our season 4 Christmas episode, Christmas Beers (Straight No Chaser and Gifted Beers).Barry pointed out that Walk of Life references other songs, and Abigail compared it to American Pie by Don McLean.Abigail formally retracted a fun “fact” she had previously shared on the podcast regarding artificial banana flavoring being based on the Gros Michel banana instead of the Cavendish banana, which is the most common banana cultivar eaten today. The 2013 SciShow video where she first learned this false fact has since been edited to remove any reference to this hypothesis but points to this article that explains the hypothesis. This Hank Green video first brought the debunking of this hypothesis to Abigail's attention. We first sampled Barn Town on our season 4 episode Barntown (Phish and Barn Town Brewery).Abigail called Why Worry an “adult lullaby,” similar to Calm Down by Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons. She then entered Why Worry into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to Little April Shower from Bambi (1942). She also brought up Baby Genius by Eels as having instrumental similarities. Barry mentioned Rain by Hans Zimmer from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002). The “vibes” in the personnel list likely refers to the vibraphone, which could very well have produced the rain sounds in Why Worry.Abigail asked if Mischievous Grin would count as a “cream tangerine” (we have officially gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album!).Barry had heard that the three war songs on this album were inspired by the Falklands War between Argentina and the United Kingdom that lasted for a little over two months in 1982. Abigail had always pictured the Vietnam War, partly because of the imagery in Ride Across the River, and partly because Abigail's consumption of war media was heavily influenced by The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, a novel about the Vietnam War.While discussing The Man's Too Strong, Abigail referenced an in-character speech by comedian and professional Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan.Up next… Version 2.0 by Garbage, Abigail's annual Phone-a-Friend submission, this time with Carlo “from Canada” Sgro, the namesake of Carlo's Corner!Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

American Pie is an epic song, the classicest of classic rock, an iconic tune from my generation, a defining ditty dominating the 1970s airwaves despite being considered too lengthy for radio. It was populated with enough imagery to fill multiple poems, none of which would be as impactful as the same lyrics set to engaging music. It encapsulates both the spirit and anxiety rippling through the American Youth following the tumultuous 1960s. It is still one of my all-time favorites, earning it a rare place on my End of Days playlist, to be played in full at any memorial service held to mark my passing. Before that, it will be the soundtrack on repeat wafting o'er my speakers while the space between my breaths lengthens and I exhale my immortal soul where it will disperse for reuse into the universe or to float disconnected for eternity.

I'm back with a brand new episode, and today I'm thrilled to be joined by Eugene Levy - the Emmy-winning actor, writer, and total comedy icon. For many of us, he'll forever be known as the bewildered dad from American Pie, or as the impeccably dressed Johnny Rose in Schitt's Creek, the multi-award-winning show he co-created with his son Dan that became a lockdown lifeline for so many of us.And more recently, he's found himself in a rather unexpected new role - that of travel presenter - as the host of The Reluctant Traveler, which is now in its third season on Apple TV+. I'm sure you've seen it everywhere over the last couple of weeks, because on one of the episodes, he interviews British royalty, interviewing Prince William.I spoke to Eugene last week while he was here in London, in Soho in one of those classic junket hotel setups, a bit like the Notting Hill Horse & Hound moment, if you know what I mean. So we had less time than usual, back in the day this would have been what I'd call a short haul episode - so we cover his 6 travel chapters today, but I still jumped at the chance to sit down with him and hear about the destinations that have made a lasting impression on him, particularly while filming his new show, and of course to ask him about the prospect of a Schitt's Creek reunion, which, I have to say, I think he was pretty positive about - let me know if you agree? Fingers crossed! From the Maldives to Seoul, Utah to Italy, here are the travel diaries of Eugene Levy.Destination Recap:Kudadoo, The MaldivesVenice, Italy Utah, USAThe Grand Canyon Italy Seoul, KoreaLouisiana, USAKruger National Park, South Africa Season 3 of The Reluctant Traveler is out now on Apple TV+. As I'm sure everyone who frequents this site already knows all too well, The Dr. Demento Show comes to an end this weekend after 55 glorious years of mad music and crazy comedy. And what better way to pay tribute to such a momentous finale than by attempting to recap the entire history of the good doctor's show - and thus, ostensibly the entire history of comedy music itself - into an eight-and-a-half-minute parody of Don McLean's classic rock staple "American Pie?" From the recently-released compilation album Fruits of the Smogberry Trees: The FuMP's Tribute to Dr. Demento, this song was a true labor of love. Barret Hansen, aka Dr. Demento, has enriched my life and livelihood far more than I can easily express, but this song was my attempt at expressing it anyway, and I hope you all enjoy it. Above all, don't you ever DARE forget to STAY DEEEEEEEEEEMENTED!!!! October Sky was the 63rd-highest grossing movie of the year, just behind The 13th Warrior. Opening on February 19th with just shy of $6 million, it went on to gross $34.7 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. October Sky was adapted from the memoir Rocket Boys (an anagram of "October Sky") by NASA engineer Homer Hickman and directed by Joe Johnston, beautifully shot by journeyman cinematographer Fred Murphy with a score by Mark Isham it starred newcomer Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Lauren Dern, William Lee Scott, Chad Lindberg, Natalie Canderday, Chris Ellis, and in a really wonderful performance, American Pie's Sherminator himself, Chris Owen. A critical hit and modest commercial success, October Sky was largely forgotten by the time award season rolled around, and it is now a fondly if faintly remembered gem (as well as the breakout film for its young star!) This week, Julia and John welcome actor/writer Amanda Jane Stern from the podcast Don't Be Crazy to talk about her new film, Joe Johnston's aggressively earnest style, and boys and their rockets. Amanda is on Bluesky @amandajanestern.com

Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we explore some of cinema's biggest box office failures and decide whether they deserve a second chance. We are celebrating five years of discussing cinematic flops!Episode 275 of Not A Bomb continues Listener Request Month with Troy and Brad diving headfirst into the chaotic, nihilistic world of Roger Avary's 2002 dark comedy The Rules of Attraction. Adapted from Bret Easton Ellis's novel, the film follows three emotionally fractured college students—Sean Bateman (yes, Patrick Bateman's younger brother), Lauren Hynde, and Paul Denton—as they spiral through drugs, sex, and existential dread at the fictional Camden College. While the marketing teased a cheeky American Pie-style romp, the film delivers something far darker: a transgressive, nonlinear fever dream built on split screens, rewound timelines, and surreal montages that mirror its characters' moral decay. Critics weren't laughing—many recoiled at its unflinching depictions of suicide, sexual assault, and emotional numbness—but Troy and Brad dig in, unpacking both the film's stylistic bravado and its brutal honesty about youth culture.⚠️ Trigger warning: This episode contains discussion of heavy drug use, sexual violence, and suicide, mirroring the film's unflinching content. The Rules of Attraction is directed by Roger Avary and stars James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, Kip Purdue, Jessica Biel, Ian Somerhalder, Clifton Collins, Jr., Thomas Ian Nicholas, Swoosie Kurtz, and Kaye DunawayTo celebrate the last 25 years of film, the Not A Bomb podcast is compiling a Top 25 list from the Not A Bomb community. In this episode of the Mo News Podcast, producer Sari Soffer Sukenik sits down with Sophie Gilbert, staff writer at The Atlantic and author of her new book, Girl on Girl: How Pop Culture Turned a Generation of Women Against Themselves. Sophie reflects on the pop culture of the '90s and 2000s — the rom-com boom, the teen sex comedies, the rise of the “cool girl,” and the commercialization of “girl power” — and how these cultural touchstones shaped millennial women's self-image, relationships, and ambitions. The conversation ranges from Spice Girls to American Pie, from rom-com nostalgia to the cultural legacy of #MeToo, and from Janet Jackson's Superbowl wardrobe malfunction to Instagram's double-edged impact. Sophie argues for a more mindful relationship with the media we consume—and what it means to raise the next generation with awareness of how culture shapes us all.

Send us a textRemember American Pie? That comedy from the last summer of the 90s that helped bring back raunchy and outlandish comedies? We do, sort of. We reviewed American Pie 2 and agreed that it was actually better than we remembered, so our hopes are high with this one. So join us as we go back to East Great Falls and watch Eugene Levy, Jason Biggs, Sean William Scott, Shannon Elizabeth, Alyson Hannigan, and of course, Stiffers Mom. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
This week on The Commentary Booth, hosts Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey are climbing back into the car for a 1,800-mile trip down memory lane to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Todd Phillips' breakout comedy, Road Trip!Released in 2000, this raucous "road sex comedy" launched the career of the future director of The Hangover and Joker. We're revisiting the misadventures of Josh, E.L., Rubin, and Kyle to see if this early 2000s time capsule holds up. We break down the iconic cast (hello, Seann William Scott and a scene-stealing Tom Green!), the film's surprising legacy, its most cringe-worthy (and hilarious) moments, and the wild futures it predicted for its characters.Highlights Breakdown:Why Road Trip defines early-2000s “guys' comedy”Barry, the snake subplot, and Tom Green's unhinged performanceCameos you probably missed (Jimmy Kimmel, Andy Dick, Todd Phillips himself)The most dated elements: VHS tapes, tube TVs, and chunky laptopsHow the framing “storytelling” device makes the whole thing unreliable (and funnier)Awards, Razzie-level acting, and the legacy of raunchy college comediesJamie and Corrina take a nostalgic yet critical look at the film's legacy, its influence on an entire generation's sense of humour (and maybe bad behaviour), and why it remains a cult classic despite mixed reviews. They also reflect on how absurd the story feels today in the age of smartphones, streaming, and instant communication. If you grew up on American Pie, EuroTrip, and early 2000s raunchy comedies, this episode is a nostalgic ride packed with laughs, critiques, and trivia gems. This week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram
