In today's Talmud page, Shevuot 47, the sages continue their discussion of oaths, this time focussing, oddly, on different gambling practices. How does this topic fit into the greater themes of the tractate? Listen and find out.

We're joined by Frances Reaves, who shares insights from her work in estate and Medicaid planning, on how to get your parents ready for long term care. Frances explains the importance of preparing for elder care before it's urgently needed, sharing her personal experience with her own parents and husband, who is currently navigating Alzheimer's care. The conversation dives into the realities of elder care, including the challenges of navigating the healthcare system, the high costs of in-home versus facility care, and the value of long-term care insurance. We discuss... Francis Reads is an elder law attorney specializing in estate and Medicaid planning. She founded a service within her law firm called “Parent Your Parents” to support elder care planning. Elder care generally begins around age 65, when Medicare becomes available. A major challenge in elder care is systemic apathy and poor communication in facilities. In-home care is the gold standard if money is no object, costing $12,000–$15,000 per month. Reverse mortgages and long-term care insurance are common strategies to fund elder care. Long-term care insurance works similarly to car insurance—ideally unused but crucial. The cost of long-term care and facilities can quickly deplete even sizable retirement savings. The best age to purchase long-term care insurance is between 55 and 60. For-profit facilities are incentivized to keep patients alive, not necessarily to improve their quality of life. If you have no one to care for you, plan ahead with long-term care insurance, savings, and legal documents like power of attorney and healthcare proxy. People who choose to provide full-time care often risk financial ruin if long-term care plans or savings are not in place. There's potential to arbitrage life expectancy in financial tools like reverse mortgages or life insurance. Many elders struggle with losing independence, especially around giving up driving. Adult children often become parental figures to their own parents, which can create emotional strain. Financial advisors and lawyers play a key role in spotting and preventing elder financial abuse. Professionals should watch for signs of undue influence or financial exploitation and speak up if concerned. You can do a lot with money. After you’ve spent it on necessities like food, housing, and education, if you’ve got money to spare you can buy stuff. Or, you can use your excess money to make more money. There are fundamentally two ways of doing this. Investing. And gambling. There are people who will argue that those two are actually the same. It’ll be interesting to see if my lunch guests today draw any similarity between their two occupations – which are, investing and gambling. On the investment side, Mike Eckert is Chairman of an organization called Gulf South Angels. The word “angels” refers to angel investors. These are people who put money into very early-stage businesses where there might be little more to invest in than a concept, a business plan, and an enthusiastic founder. The last time we met Mike was 2014. At that time he was launching a New Orleans angel investment group called NOLA Angel Network. That was to become the nucleus of the current, much larger organization. Gulf South Angels network is spread across 12 states. There are around 135 angel members. And to date they’ve invested over $20m in a diverse range of companies, from aerospace to pet food. And so, to the other method of using your surplus capital to generate more money: gambling. If you’re a certain age you may remember a time when there was no legalized gambling in the state of Louisiana. The state legislature eventually figured out a way to compromise between the anti-gambling faction and the pro-gambling folks, by allowing gambling, without actually allowing it. They achieved this seemingly impossible feat by permitting gambling only on riverboats, not on land. But they also allowed riverboats to tie up to a dock, and didn’t require them to actually sail anywhere. One of these gambling vessels was the Treasure Chest Casino Riverboat, tied up to a dock in Kenner. Well, as they tend to, times change. Somehow, the non-gambling folks were won over and today Louisiana has a number of what we still call, “land-based casinos.” In June 2024, just over the levee from the riverboat, a much bigger, land-based casino and entertainment center, called The Treasure Chest, opened in Kenner’s Laketown neighborhood. The Director of Marketing at Treasure Chest Casino is Rodney Miller. In the 1980’s, a book about deal-making called “Getting To Yes” popularized the concept of “win win” – conflict resolution in which both parties feel they have benefited, rather than one side winning at the expense of the other. This same feeling - that everybody benefits - is the core belief of both casinos and angel investors. At the casino, the theory goes, even if you don’t come out ahead financially, you’ve had a good time. And, like any other pastime, hopefully you only spent discretionary capital, not your rent money. With angel investing, the theory goes, you’re risking your own money by sinking it into somebody else’s dream - but if it works out, everybody wins. Whether this is how you think the world works, or whether you’re more of a cynic with less of a Pollyanna perspective, there are always going to be people with discretionary income looking for a way to invest it. Whether that’s gambling or angel investing, for Mike and Rodney it’s win-win. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Saving doesn't have to be boring. If you're looking for an enjoyable way to save money, try a savings challenge. Whether you're planning to build an emergency fund, save for a dream vacation, or develop better money habits, savings challenges can transform your saving journey and set you on a rewarding path to achieve your financial goals. Links: Download the Roll-the-Dice Savings Challenge tracker Download the 100 Envelope Savings Challenge tracker Check out TCU University for financial education tips and resources! Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! Learn more about Triangle Credit Union Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast. Saving money can be overwhelming. You may not know where to begin, how much to save or even HOW to save money. Saving money doesn't need to be stressful and it can actually be fun if you participate in a savings challenge. Here are 4 savings challenges you can try this year to grow your savings account and improve your financial future. Roll-the-dice Challenge Gamifying savings is a great way to turn something that might be stressful or scary into something entertaining and enjoyable! This challenge is flexible and can be done daily, weekly, or monthly depending on your goals and financial situation. Simply roll a die and set aside the cash OR transfer that amount to your savings account. For example, if you roll a 1, save $1; if you roll a 6, save $6, etc. Looking to save a little more each time? Roll a pair of dice (or one die twice) and save that amount. Make sure you record your rolls and track your progress on our Roll-The-Dice savings tracker. You can find the link in the show notes and at triangleuniversity.org. Pause Your Subscriptions Challenge Streaming services, food delivery services, and product boxes are monthly subscriptions that most American consumers pay for; some people have multiple subscriptions for the same service– for example, some consumers subscribe to both DoorDash's DashPass and Uber Eats' Uber One. Too often, one signs up for a free trial with the intent to cancel before the free trial ends, only to forget and be charged for the service. If you're not keeping an eye on your finances and tracking all your expenses diligently, it's possible you're paying for subscriptions and not even aware of it. Take some time to go through all your bank accounts and credit card statements for the past few months and highlight any recurring charges. Then, analyze the charges and decide which subscriptions could be paused or canceled for a while. Maybe you subscribed to a streaming service to watch one show a few months ago but haven't watched anything on that platform since. Or maybe you've decided to stop getting food delivered anyway so you no longer need those subscriptions. Pause or cancel any subscription you're not currently using and instead put that money in your savings account or investments. You may even find that after a few months, you don't miss those subscriptions anyway! Round-Up Challenge When it comes to savings, no amount is too small. Every penny you can put towards your savings goals adds up! That's why a round-up challenge is perfect for people who are not ready to make large, one-time, contributions to their savings accounts. Every time you spend, calculate the number of cents it would take to round up to the next dollar, then transfer that much into your savings account. If you're using cash, put the change in a jar at the end of every day. Rounding up your purchases and setting aside the difference may seem insignificant at the time, however the amounts will quickly add up and you will see how each drop in your savings account helps it grow. The 100 Envelope Challenge If you've participated in our other savings challenges, you may be familiar with the 100 Envelope Challenge but since we've seen success with this savings challenge, we decided to include it again. The challenge is simple: Choose a numbered envelope at random and set aside that amount to save. Once all 100 envelopes have been filled, you'll have $5,050 to either spend or put towards a bigger savings goal you have. This savings challenge works best when done with cash so it's perfect for cash budgeters! Here's how it works: Head to your nearest Dollar Store and buy a pack of envelopes (enough to label them 1-100 individually) Take the envelopes out of the box and label each envelope with a number (start at 1 until you have labeled all 100 envelopes) Give the envelopes a shuffle and put them back in the box When you want to begin this challenge, take an envelope randomly from the box and fill with the appropriate amount (For example: If you pull the envelope labeled “42”, you will fill with $42) Put the completed envelope in the back of the box behind the empty envelopes or bring that money to the bank and deposit that money into your savings account. To keep track of all your completed envelopes download and use our 100 Envelope Savings Tracker through the link in the show notes or at triangleuniversity.org. Now's the time to start savings and try the savings challenge that intrigues you the most! If there are any other tips or topics you would like us to cover, let us know at tcupodcast@trianglecu.org. Like and follow our Making Money Personal FB and IG page and look for our sponsor, Triangle Credit Union on social media to share your thoughts. We loved having bandleader and drummer/percussionist Dom Palombi back to talk about his new album, Dom Palombi's Game Night! Vol. 2. There are about twice as many musicians on this album than on Vol. 1, with what Dom describes as more personal track choices than before. The musicianship is just beyond measure, and it's a fun, adventurous, delightful, funky romp through some great tunes. The three originals are fantastic. ENJOY! Join us on Discord for free.
