In 1999, we were treated to a full re-imagining of the 1959 horror classic House on Haunted Hill. Directed by William Malone and loosely adapted from Robb White's original story by screenwriter Dick Beebe, this is one of those rare remakes/reboots/re-imaginings where homage and inspiration meet and produce something welcome at just the right time. This update is completely different in just about every way—except for the basic kernel of the story.Geoffrey Rush (as Steven Price) and his wife Famke Janssen (Evelyn) host a party of unsuspecting guests for a night filled with shock and terror. The animosity between the couple and the characterization of Watson Pritchett (Chris Kattan) are carried over, and yes, there's a very large house with some very scary things. But that's about where the similarities end. This re-imagining updates the tone to a contemporary horror standard: heavy on computer effects, much gorier, both almost loud enough to overshadow the entertaining performances from the entire cast, but it doesn't. In the end it all works for a lot of fun.Our party guests are rounded out by:Taye DiggsAli LarterPeter GallagherBridgette WilsonAnd the great Jeffrey Combs as Dr. VannacuttIt's slick, it's loud, it's bloody—and it's a lot of fun. A haunted house movie for the late '90s, with just enough weirdness to make it memorable.Follow Matt:Matt has over 100+ on LetterboxdYou can reach out on Bluesky: @MovieMattSirois Terrible movies often find him, even under under the alias Marcus at Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.Follow who we follow: Once Upon a Geek and  The Fade Out Podcast

FearDotCom (2002) was chosen by supporter Mike, and it stands as one of the more infamous entries in early-2000s horror cinema. Directed by William Malone, the film attempted to ride the wave of techno-horror thrillers that followed in the wake of The Ring and other Y2K-era internet scare stories. Produced on a budget of around $40 million and shot in Luxembourg to cut costs, the film leaned heavily into dark, industrial set design and unsettling visual effects. Its creative team aimed to blend supernatural horror with the growing unease surrounding online culture and the dangers lurking in the digital world.Unfortunately, what ended up on screen was a messy, incoherent slog that quickly earned a reputation as one of the worst horror films of its decade. Critics tore into its lack of story, overreliance on cheap shock tactics, and shameless recycling of ideas from better movies. Rather than building a cult following, FearDotCom has largely been remembered as an embarrassing misfire — a reminder that big budgets and flashy visuals can't save a film when the script is dead on arrival.Check out Mike's channels for Genuine Chit Chat and Star Wars Chit Chat.If you enjoy the show, we have a Patreon, so become a supporter here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryA mysterious website, a string of gruesome deaths, and a detective racing against time — FearDotCom! When people log on, they don't just surf the web… they sign their own death warrant. Now, with only 48 hours to crack the case, the question isn't who's behind the killings… but whether anyone can survive clicking the wrong link.Fun FactsFearDotCom was filmed almost entirely in Luxembourg, making it one of the most expensive movies ever shot there at the time. The movie had a budget of around $40 million, but grossed less than $20 million worldwide, marking it as a huge box office flop.Director William Malone previously worked on another horror movie, House on Haunted Hill (1999), before tackling FearDotCom.The film holds a rare 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, cementing its reputation as one of the worst-reviewed horror movies ever made.Screenwriter Josephine Coyle came up with the concept after being inspired by fears of the internet in the late 1990s.The movie's cinematography leaned heavily on shadows and industrial set design, inspired by German expressionism and the works of David Fincher.Critics often compared it unfavorably to The Ring, which was released just months later in 2002.FearDotCom was one of the last major horror films to receive a wide theatrical release before studios shifted many similar “dot com” thrillers to direct-to-DVD.Despite its failure, the film has developed a small following of horror fans who admire its eerie visual style, if not its storytelling.Stephen Dorff, the film's lead actor, admitted in later interviews that he felt the script was weak but took the role because of the big production budget and studio backing.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

The podcast enters a stretch of top-notch episodes with William Malone's visually distinct and genuinely creepy installment. Throughout the season, the boys have made plenty of jokes at the expense of directors like William Malone. “Really, he's a master of horror?” Like feardotcom and House on Haunted Hill, The Fair Haired Child proves that William Malone definitely deserves that distinction.  With strange flashbacks and an occult mystery plot, the episode has some of the most arresting images and performances of the whole series. Despite some Nu Metal styling and a sometimes exposition-heavy script, this is one episode that could hopefully encourage viewers to give its director's output a second look. Created by Mick Garris, Masters of Horror was a two-season series on Showtime that challenged genre legends to create an hour-long horror film. Follow along as Bennett and Jim are forced to spend no more than 20 minutes discussing each episode from the first season of the series or face a room full of poisonous gas.

Our Thoughts on Love on the Danube: Royal Getaway What We Liked Dynamic Duo:We enjoyed the chemistry between Dan Jeanotte (Joe) and Jessica Sipos (Ava). Dan consistently brings charm to his roles, and Jessica's energy was palpable. Their interactions felt genuine, contributing to the movie's overall emotional appeal. Supporting Cast:Catherine Disher's presence was a definite plus. She's the kind of character you'd want on your cruise — exuding wisdom and charm. Moreover, her scenes with Steven Pacey's Reynolds hinted at a compelling subplot that we wish had more screen time. Scenic Locations:The movie's on-location shoots were visually stunning. Budapest's beautiful landmarks and the vibrant European backdrops significantly elevated the movie. Visually, it felt more genuine and less reliant on the cliché Hallmark sets. Animated Intro:The custom animated intro for the movie was a delightful touch. It added a unique flavor and set a charming tone before delving into the story. What We Wished For Plot Predictability:While enjoyable, the movie followed the well-worn Hallmark formula a bit too closely, making it painfully predictable at times. The fake royal trope is getting tiresome, and we long for some fresh storylines in future films. More Cruise Content:For a movie centered around a cruise, there was surprisingly little "boat stuff." We hoped for more scenes showing the cruise experience, which felt sidelined in favor of land-based storytelling. ...
