Highlander II: The Quickening, Andor, Doctor Who: The Story and the Engine
There can be only one! Well, unless there's a bunch of money up for grabs in making a sequel! Or that was the plan at last. Dave's next entry for the year of the stitch-up is the 1991 sequel to the cult classic, Highlander II: The Quickening. The production of Highlander II: The Quickening is often cited as a masterclass in cinematic chaos. Shot primarily in Argentina, the film was plagued by financial problems from the outset. The country's volatile economy led to massive inflation during production, and the financiers seized control of the project from director Russell Mulcahy. With the original vision compromised, the resulting film veered far from the tone and mythology of the first Highlander, introducing a sci-fi backstory about aliens that baffled fans and critics alike. Mulcahy was so frustrated with the interference that he reportedly tried to have his name removed from the project altogether.Despite returning stars like Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, the film's confusing script, drastic re-editing, and overreliance on shoddy visual effects left many scratching their heads. The disarray behind the scenes prompted several later attempts to salvage the movie, including the release of the Renegade Version in 1995 and The Special Edition in 2004, both of which removed the alien subplot and tried to realign the story closer to the original's spirit. However, the damage to the franchise's reputation had already been done. Over time, Highlander II has gained a cult following—albeit more for its notorious infamy than its cinematic merit. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where immortals once battled across centuries, Highlander II: The Quickening takes a wild detour into the future—because why not? Earth is dying, the ozone layer is toast, and Connor MacLeod, now a weary old man, must rise again when an evil tyrant from another planet—yes, another planet—sends assassins to finish what they started. Joined by his resurrected mentor Ramirez, they'll slash their way through sci-fi nonsense, corporate villains, and the laws of continuity itself… because this time, being immortal just isn't confusing enough. Buckle up—this isn't the sequel you asked for, it's the one that leaves you asking, what just happened?thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter is a 1974 British swashbuckling action horror film, written and directed by Brian Clemens in his directorial debut. Clemens was celebrated for his work as a screenwriter, particularly for his contributions to British television series. Prior to Captain Kronos, he wrote and produced Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde for Hammer. Other films he wrote that fall into and circle around our areas of interest include And Soon the Darkness (which he wrote with Dalek creator Terry Nation), See No Evil (the 1971 Mia Farrow film,), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, The Watcher in the Woods (one of Disney's forays into horror and one of Ross's all-time favorites), and one of the most bizarre sequels of all time—Highlander II: The Quickening. According to his son Samuel, Clemens' last words were, "I did quite a good job," spoken after watching an episode of The Avengers. In Captain Kronos, the titular character is played by Horst Janson, famous in Germany for his role in Salto Mortale, where he portrayed a trapeze artist. He later became familiar to younger audiences as "Horst" in Sesamstrasse, the German adaptation of Sesame Street, which he hosted from 1980 to 1983. The Captain's voice was dubbed in this film due to Janson's strong German accent, with Julian Holloway taking on the task. Holloway, who featured in eight Carry On films before moving into voice-over work, has recently voiced Prime Minister Almec and Admiral Kilian in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He also appeared in Doctor Who's last story of the classic era, Survival. In 1976, he had a brief relationship with Tessa Dahl, daughter of Patricia Neal and Roald Dahl, which produced one daughter, the author and former model Sophie Dahl, who was born the following year. The supporting cast includes John Carson as Dr. Marcus, a physician who enlists Kronos's help to investigate strange deaths in his village. Carson, often noted for his voice that bears a striking resemblance to James Mason's, was a Hammer regular with appearances in Taste the Blood of Dracula and The Plague of the Zombies. Caroline Munro appears as Carla, a Romanian girl who becomes Kronos's feisty sidekick. Known for her glamorous looks, Munro rose to fame as the "Lamb's Navy Rum" poster girl, a role she held for ten years. She initially caught Hammer's attention through her work on The Abominable Dr. Phibes, where she played Vincent Price's silent, deceased wife, and its sequel Dr. Phibes Rises Again (check out episode 10 for our review of the first of those two "classics"). As well as this film, she of course appeared in the subject of our very first podcast episode, Dracula A.D. 1972. Outside Hammer, Munro went on to play the slave girl Margiana in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, the princess in At the Earth's Core, and the deadly Bond girl Naomi in The Spy Who Loved Me, turning down the role of Ursa in Superman to accept it. The film's score was composed by Laurie Johnson, who, from the 1960s to the 1980s, composed over fifty themes and scores, including the theme used on This Is Your Life (entitled "Gala Performance"), The Avengers (from 1965), Animal Magic (entitled "Las Vegas"), Jason King, The New Avengers, and The Professionals. Though Captain Kronos was shot in 1972, it was delayed and eventually released in 1974. The film was intended to kick off a series featuring Kronos and his companions, but no sequels were made—although there have been a number of follow up comic book adventures. Highlander II: The Quickening takes everything you loved about the original and throws it in the dumpster. A sequel in title only, the film is an utter travesty from start to finish. Why? Well, instead of the general premise of them simply being immortals, they are now beings from a different planet. They were sent to Earth as punishment for treason, but also inexplicably granted immortality. It only gets worse from there. Sean Connery returns as Ramirez. Yes, he died in the first one. That doesn't matter here. And, as viewers, it's best not to ask questions. He's charming and famous damnit! Plus, one can't simply expect Highlander II to just coast on bizarre alley sex scenes with Christopher Lambert! But, I digress, Highlander was a cool genre flick with an interesting premise. Sadly, when forced to flesh out their lore, the writers penned some of the dumbest shit to ever grace the screen. It flopped hard, and it deserved to. It also has the distinction of holding a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. There couldn't even be one reviewer that liked it. Now, sit back, drink to your immortal health with a Kilt Lifter from Four Peaks Brewing, and tear down the Shield! The Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are plotting a coup on our home planet, Zeist! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – In all their centuries on Earth, nothing could prepare them for...! Saturn 3 is, quite frankly, just a bizarre film. It focuses on essentially three characters—played by just Kirk Douglas, Farah Fawcett, and Harvey Keitel—as well as a corny looking robot named Hector. Douglas and Fawcett, as Major Adam and his assistant Alex, work on one of the moon's of Saturn, striving to find solutions to Earth's hunger problem. Keitel, as the menacing Benson, shows up to bring chaos and terror to their lives. Well, really he's just weird, but his robot companion—fueled by his worst traits—becomes a murderous psychopath. That is essentially the movie. It has odd sex scenes, a dearth of tension, some supremely bad ADR over Keitel's voice, and some of the worst practical effects this side of Uranus. Hence why it is hailed as one of the worst movies of all-time, crashing and burning with critics and at the box office. Now, sit back, question your life choices with a tumbler of tequila, and monitor our hydroponics! The Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, and Chumpzilla are feeding our worst impulses into Hector's collection of baby brains! This week we review the classic 1986 fantasy film, "Highlander." - In what ways does the opening scene of this movie have significance in 1980s wrestling, including the backstories of eventually-famous Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon Jr.? And, which Geek is the one to know about it (this should be an easy one)? - Which Geek noticed something dirty in Connor MacLeod's apartment? - What do the Geeks feel about the look, tone, cult status, and 1980s-ness of the movie? - Which Geek compared this movie's cult status and resurgence to that of "Killer Klowns From Outer Space," which the Geeks reviewed in episode #020 (still one of this podcast's best episodes -- and remastered, slightly, a few months ago; give it a listen)? - Could the Geeks make it 20 minutes into the podcast before mentioning the soundtrack by famous British band, Queen? - How much did opinions vary about the acting in the movie? Were any performances described as a "block of wood"? Which character was over-the-top for one or more of the Geeks? - Which actors were allegedly intoxicated sometimes during filming? - How was the sword fighting in this movie compared to lightsaber duels in Star Wars? - What do the Geeks think about the basic premise of the movie? - What did the Geeks have to say about "Highlander II: The Quickening," regarded as one of the worst movies of all time? - Which Geeks were fans of the Highlander TV show, featuring Connor's distant cousin, Duncan? - How does the ending of this movie make the continuation of a franchise problematic? - And, when "Best MCU Phase 1 Movie" was rolled as an upcoming topic, which Geek assumed the obvious answer would be "The Avengers," and did another Geek imply opinions on that topic might not be so obvious? Porcupine men, Argentinian hyperinflation, and trains going 700mph. This week Michelle, Abigail, and special guest Charnstar Anderson watched the Highlander sequel so you don't have to! They take a dive into the film's ambitious effects, different edits, and the planet Zeist
Jeez! We had to flush at least six times to get through this deuce. This newest Dropping' Deuces, Highlander II The Quickening, is perhaps the worst movie ever. For real. It does live up to the hype though. Actors cashing paychecks, buying land, drinking all night, constant script changes, and at least one death. Highlander was awesome but this one pretty much erases any trace of the original movie except for the principle characters! At one time Brock did have some sort of liking for this movie but not any more. Of course there are several versions of this movie available to stream and somehow we got the directors cut. Supposedly the Renegade version is way better but we doubt it. Brock had the VHS copy in his study. So listen on true believers and don't forget to double flush this deuce. If you can get through the actual movie and tell us how Ramirez got his Katana back before the raid and how Connor got it to defeat the baddie, we will send you a dropped culture sticker and a bag of hard candies free!If you like our content and us personally why don't you subscribe or finger the socials for dropped culture!Menard's and www.droppedculture.com is where you will find all of your Dropped Culture needs! Just look for the spatulas and we are right there!
Highlander II was so efficient at burning the goodwill of its fanbase George Lucas took it as a personal challenge, and that's how we got The Phantom Menace. We're not exactly Hollywood historians around here, but we're pretty sure that's how it went down. For some reason, the minds behind Highlander thought the best way to continue the story of a 500-year-old sword-fighting immortal with a rich background, not even Forrest Gump could hold a bucket of shrimp up to by making him an alien who's charged with fixing the ozone layer. Yeah… Suffice it to say we had a lot of gripes with Connor MacLeod's second appearance on the silver screen, but the fixes were a bit difficult. Thankfully Glenna Schowalter of the Quantum Kickflip podcast returns to lend us a head. Get it?
Miles Watson joined us to discuss Highlander II: The Quickening.

It's EPISODE 250 and Johnny's dream from 150 episodes ago is finally coming true. Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod is on the podcast as we watch the extended, and only-available, cut of Highlander's infamous sequel. Will Andrew take to a second film to a franchise he doesn't care for? Will Johnny's nostalgia be busted by a new look and a different edit? Will Queen create a whole new soundtrack using Christopher Lambert's chuckle? What kind of party would it be without Michael Ironside anyway? Come for the sword fighting, stay forever because you're an immortal human or alien or something.
If you take one Scotsman playing a Spaniard, one French-American playing a Scotsman, probably two separate movie plots, $34M, and you mix them all together you get Highlander II: The Quickening. This train wreck features a literal train wreck and is the ultimate choice for this week's bad sequel.

In this episode of Films(trips), guest James Hrivnak seeks redemption as he joins Andrew and Dave in discussing HIGHLANDER III: THE SORCERER, a film released under multiple titles across the world and which makes marginally more sense than HIGHLANDER II: THE QUICKENING. Does the film hit the enjoyably bad heights of its predecessor? Can the trio find something nice to say about sort-of producers Panzer and Davis? How well does Quebec sub-in for Japan? And just what is Axel Rose's beef with Mario Van Peebles? Tune in and find out! Next Episode: Lawsuits! Different edits! More Christopher Lambert! All music by Andrew Kannegiesser. This week Sam shares the insanity that is the 1991 movie Highlander II: The Quickening, and to deal with it Danielle calls for backup in the form of Emily from I Drink Your Podcast. In the year 2024 the world has been encased in a shield to protect Earth from the intense rays of the sun now able to ravage to planet due the destruction of the ozone layer. For some reason, Connor MacLeod, now mortal and old beyond his years, was involved in the creation of the shield. How exactly his previous career as a sword wielding immortal translates to large scale engineering projects is a question beyond answer. It's also revealed that Connor is from the past, or an alien from another planet depending on if you watch the director's cut of the film, and was sent to the future/Earth with the other immortals as punishment for their participation in a rebellion against Michael Ironside as their evil ruler General Katana. All that crazy is before Sam even gets to the plot (such as it is) or the resurrection of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, played by Sean Connery. About the only thing this sequel seems to retain from the first film is the baffling accent choices, so dive in as we discover there can be only one...again. Check out more of Emily and I Drink Your Podcast on Twitter @IDYP_Podcast, Instagram @idyp_podcast, and listen wherever you get your podcasts.
Paul W.S. Anderson relinquishes his directing duties once again, but this time to actual real director Russell Mulcahey (Highlander, Highlander II: The Quickening, The Shadow). The result is a weird outlier for the series that features some of its most competently assembled set pieces. Unfortunately, it is still written by Anderson, who contradicts himself and barely moves the overarching plot forward. Randy and Jens discuss.

Jeremy reunites with author and scriptwriter Simon Guerrier for a New Year's Eve special examining Highlander II: The Quickening, the 1991 action fantasy sequel starring Christophe Lambert, Sean Connery, Virginia Madsen and Michael Ironside. Their conversation covers such wide-ranging topics as the implausible endurance of the franchise, the film's multiple edits and interpretations, its debt to other film sequels, chaos in Argentina, the identity of the "80s sci-fi Jonah" and the true meaning of the Quickening.
How could you possibly improve upon a classic cinematic milestone like Highlander? Well, ya can't! But that didn't stop this embarrassing travesty of a film from getting made. All logic goes right out the window (not that there was much to start with) as we learn what happens to our immortal hero Connor MacLeod when he wins "The Prize" after chopping the heads off all his enemies. This coveted "Prize" turns out to be the thoughts and knowledge of every mind in the world, so how can what follows be so incredibly stupid??? Hang in there, though. While we may have lost Sean Connery in the real world, in this movie he's back in action after being decapitated in the first one. Hey, it's a kind of magic! C'mon, have a listen to this hilarious podcast, which features my fellow Highlander kinsman Dave Chan and some copious imbibing of Scotch, in honor of one of our favorite bad movies and an actor classy enough to rescue it from oblivion.

This week we take a look at, not one, but two Highlander films. We'll check out the classic 1986 "Highlander" and it's (in)famous sequel "Highlander II: The Quickening". Then we'll attempt to compare the two and see if The Quickening is really as bad as legend tells us. Is this truly the series that should "be only one"? This is a travesty, it shits on the first movie and is horrible in every respect. Highlander is such a classic and to have this movie about aliens, and time travel end up just sort of being boring is a massive let down Check out the Dope Nostalgia podcast at www.dopenostalgia.com Here is a copy paste of the story. In this sci-fi/fantasy sequel, Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) has become an elderly man after losing his immortality. Living in a bleak future where the world is protected from solar radiation by a massive shield, MacLeod regains his youth when he kills two assassins from his home planet. This results in an ongoing battle with the villainous and powerful Gen. Katana (Michael Ironside), but MacLeod receives help when the noble Juan Ramirez (Sean Connery) returns. Wife and Husband film fans Natalie and Bobby trawl their gargantuan DVD collection and check out the lowest rated movies they own. Hoping for the the Prize rather than a beheading, they crash into the 1.9* rated on Letterboxd Higlander II. They discuss short sighted action heros, a retcon too far, sidelined eco-warriors and sneaky Argentinian superproduction. “Peace is highly overrated.” Enjoy the pod if not the immortal antique dealer goes alien scientist sequel.

This week, the Made in the 80s crew lives with Highlander II: The Quickening (91) ⚔️⚡️
This week Jonathan decided to test Molly's commitment to bad movies. We review Highlander II: The Quickening starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Virginia Madsen. This sequel by the same writer, director, and main actors as the original somehow goes horribly off the rails and takes us to a new low.
Yes, the time of the Quickening is at hand! In this episode of Stuff to Blow Your Mind, Robert Lamb and Joe McCormick finally make good on their threat to devote an entire episode to the 1991 film "Highlander II: The Quickening" and whatever science might be rendered from its plot. They wanted this to be a six-part series, but our boss tells us... there can be only one. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
[School of Movies 2019] "Transcending history and the world, a tale of souls and swords, eternally retold"... No wait, "There can only be one!" A good question would of course then be "Why was there more than one?" Because the answer certainly isn't "Money!" The original Highlander is a sci-fi fantasy that awkwardly mashes together slightly-too-serious delivery with crazy camp ostentatiousness and a kickass Queen soundtrack. Nowhere near enough people have seen it, and we want to help remedy that. Back in 2016 we recorded a pair of shows on Highlander which sat in raw form for three years, waiting to be released. Recently, when I began the edit I found myself disappointed by the general lack of energy and meandering nature of the show on the first film (mainly down to me rushing everyone through a running synopsis) yet my guests still said some fascinating things. So a week ago I brought them back for a gathering and we did a show on Highlander again. This time for the edit I seamlessly interwove the best bits of the old show with the main body of the new version. Next week you'll get to hear our 2016 episode on Highlander II: The Quickening, which was much more on-point because that film is utterly bananas. Guests: Neil Taylor of TheKidDogg Jesse Ferguson of Recorded Tomorrow
Andrew and Dave managed to change the tire, and, after a quick drive past HIGHLANDER II: THE QUICKENING, have ended up at EATING RAOUL, the 1982 dark comedy from co-writer, director, and star Paul Bartel (DEATH RACE 2000). Um, sooooo in this episode, Andrew and David touch upon HIGHLANDER II: THE QUICKENING, explain why this isn't like a regular episode of the show, give listeners a glace at how the show is produced, and explain the connection between HIGHLANDER II and the film to be discussed on the next episode of Films(trips)! Pat's all by himself this week for the first time in a couple of months, and it's not clear whether he's saving his friends from having to watch Highlander II: The Quickening or if he just wants to keep the Terminator and Lethal Weapon movies for himself. Welcome back to season 3 of Sequelisers, the show all about fixing bad sequels to good movies. If there’s a good movie that was followed by a terrible sequel, we’re going to try and fix it. Once upon a time, there was a movie. It didn't do very well, but people remembered it fondly, so they made a sequel. It was pretty bad. So they made another sequel, and it was also pretty bad. People looked upon the faces of the sequels and realized that the original movie was actually really pretty damned good - at least in comparison - and so a cult movie was born. This week, the Movieing On team sits down to watch Highlander, the 1986 original starring Christopher Lambert with a not very convincing Scottish accent starring opposite Sean Connery with a not very convincing Spanish accent in a not very convincing movie about people who cannot die. ... It's better than I make it sound, actually. Just when you thought movie sequels couldn't possibly get any worse than Highlander II: The Quickening, here comes a film that not only completely negates the entire Highlander mythos, but also royally besmirches Freddie Mercury while it's at it. Yes, it's Highlander: The Source, which truly shows that there isn't more to life than this. Please visit http://tranquiltirades.wikia.com.

We continue our theme of “Unnecessary Sequels Readily Available on Netflix Which Involve Immortality, Resurrection, and Christian-motifed Revenge Plots” to bring you our second reviewed Highlander movie: Highlander: Endgame! Wiping away all memories of Highlander II: The Quickening, Endgame brings in the star of the Highlander television series Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul) as he carries the torch from the ridiculously haircutted Connor McLeod (Christopher Lambert). Evil highlander Jacob Kell (YSM favorite Bruce Payne) is killing highlanders in some elaborate 500 year old revenge plot, and it’s up to Duncan to stop him. There are also large gaps in the highlander mythos which we assume are filled by Highlander III: The Sorcerer and the television series, though Endgame does a poor job of bringing us into the fold. Mostly the movie is a mishmash of self-contradicting highlander rules enforced by either the Watchers, a mortal group calculating highlander power levels, or no one. It’s not entirely clear. If you like horrible period drama wigs, a confusing confluence of western and eastern influences, and Bruce Payne mugging his way through the movie, Highlander: Endgame may be for you! We’ll do our best to nitpick highlander rules, contemplate the aggressive nature of immortal sex, and discuss the prevalence of the White Guy Karate throughout the film.

Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery return in this much despised sequel to the Queen soundtracked 1986 movie. This time around MacLeod (Lambert) is an old mortal man with an elderly Jewish woman's voice, and Ramirez (Connery) is back from the dead, destined to destroy the giant shield around the earth and kill the needlessly evil General Katana (Michael Ironside).
In this episode, Mom and I review Highlander II: The Quickening (Renegade Version) -- quite possibly the Worst Movie EVER!
