We sadly lost 1990s icon James Van Der Beek in February, so we decided it was time to look at his most prominent non-Dawson's Creek role - the teen comedy-drama sports movie Varsity Blues. Released very early in the year on January 15th, Varsity Blues was the 45th highest grossing movie of the year. Opening as a surprise number, it made back most of its 16 million dollar budget in its debut weekend and would go on to gross an impressive 54 million dollars worldwide, but it really became a summertime hit in its home video release in June. Also starring Jon Voight, Paul Walker, Ron Lester, Scott Caan, Amy Smart, Ali Larter, and a little baby Jesse Plemons, and featuring an incredibly 1999 soundtrack including Foo Fighters, Green Day, Collective Soul, Third Eye Blind and Fastball, Varsity Blues has something of a cult status, in part due to one very memorable line delivery. But how does it hold up as a teen movie or a sports film? This week, our friend Jacki Krestel joins us to talk sports, teens, 90s tropes, and James Van Der Beek. Jack writes about baseball on her blog, Jack Likes Baseball.
Noel catches up with Paul Durham, the frontman and founder of the band, Black Lab. Paul successfully ran a kickstarter for Black Lab's upcoming 7th studio album, their first in ten years. The first single, Go, off of the upcoming album just dropped. Black Lab debuted in 1997 with their amazing album, Your Body Above Me. The album featured the hit, Time Ago. Paul talks about how P.J. Harvey xo-wrote one of the songs on the album. Black Lab songs were featured on soundtracks to Spider-Man, Can't Hardly Wait, and Varsity Blues. The band went viral for their cover of the Transformers theme song.

A popular local name melts down and a famous name nationally sadly passes away.
The boys break down the Big Game, but fair warning: they spend more time on Bad Bunny's celebrity filled halftime performance than the snoozer on the field. From there, they pivot to their latest favorite "old man sport": curling! They jabber about how it weirdly connects with their other favorite old man sport (golf) before inadvertently professing their love for unassuming Olympic hotties. Speaking of golf, AJ and the Iceman lament the rowdy crowds at golf's drunkest event, the Waste Management Phoenix Open... while simultaneously plotting to join them(?). There's also a lot of googling about Captain Planet. Throw on Varsity Blues in the background, and enjoy the chaos. PS. Schedule your colonoscopies.. or we'll do it for you.
Trials by Seven, Auditions by Fire This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl review the latest two episodes of HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (Season 1, Episodes 3 and 4), plus the full first season of Marvel Television's Wonder Man on Disney+. RIP James Van Der Beek. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 RIP James Van Der Beek: 03:35 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (E3): 10:36 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (E4): 20:44 Wonder Man (Season 1): 42:00 In Memoriam: James Van Der Beek (1977–2026) James Van Der Beek, the actor who became a defining face of late-1990s television as Dawson Leery on Dawson's Creek, has died at age 48 after a short battle with an aggressive colorectal cancer. He passed peacefully on February 11, 2026, with his wife, Kimberly, and their six children by his side. Van Der Beek's breakout role on Dawson's Creek helped shape a generation of teen storytelling on television, and the show's honest exploration of adolescence made him a familiar presence to millions of viewers. After the series ran from 1998 to 2003, he continued working across television and film in a wide range of roles, from the high school football drama Varsity Blues to camera-savvy self-parody on Don't Trust the B–– in Apartment 23 and crime procedurals like CSI: Cyber. His candid sharing of his cancer journey in recent years also raised awareness of early-onset colorectal cancer. Friends, fans, and colleagues paid tribute to his warmth, humor, and impact both on and off screen. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children, whose privacy the family has asked the public to respect during this time of mourning. We celebrate James's work, his openness, and the joy his performances brought to so many. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO) S1E3: “The Squire” (Released Feb 1, 2026) Summary: Egg pushes to become Dunk's real squire while the Ashford tourney turns uglier. Aerion's cruelty escalates both on and off the lists, and Dunk's sense of “knightly justice” finally boils over, forcing Egg to reveal exactly who he is. Main cast (key players in the series): Peter Claffey (Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall), Dexter Sol Ansell (Aegon “Egg” Targaryen), Finn Bennett (Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen), Daniel Ings (Ser Lyonel Baratheon), Bertie Carvel (Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen), Sam Spruell (Prince Maekar Targaryen), Tanzyn Crawford (Tanselle). Production notes: Directed by Sarah Adina Smith. Written by Hiram Martinez, Annie Julia Wyman, and Ira Parker. Series created by Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin, and adapts the “Dunk and Egg” novellas beginning with The Hedge Knight. Rating Out of 5 The Kingdom’s Most Dangerous Puppet Show Brian: 4.12/5 Darryl: 4.2/5 S1E4: “Seven” (Released Feb 6, 2026) Summary: With Dunk imprisoned and Egg's identity detonating into the open, the consequence is pure Westeros: a trial by combat, except Aerion demands the rarer “trial by seven.” Dunk must assemble champions fast, loyalty gets stress-tested, and the episode ends with a big, crowd-facing choice that turns the whole situation into a franchise-sized moment. Main cast (key players in the series): Peter Claffey, Dexter Sol Ansell, Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Sam Spruell, Daniel Ings, Henry Ashton (Prince Daeron Targaryen), Edward Ashley (Ser Steffon Fossoway), Youssef Kerkour (Steely Pate). Production notes: Directed by Sarah Adina Smith. Written by Aziza Barnes, Annie Julia Wyman, and Ira Parker. Main cast: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Simon Williams), Ben Kingsley (Trevor Slattery), X Mayo (Janelle Jackson), Zlatko Burić (Von Kovak), Arian Moayed (P. Cleary), Joe Pantoliano (as himself), Byron Bowers (DeMarr Davis / Doorman), Josh Gad (as himself). Production notes: Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, with Guest as showrunner. On February 11, 2026, James Van Der Beek — the actor whose emotional vulnerability helped define a generation of teen television — died at the age of 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer. Rising to fame as Dawson Leery on Dawson's Creek, Van Der Beek became the earnest, introspective face of late-1990s youth culture, anchoring a series that reshaped the teen drama with its sincerity, ambition, and unapologetic heart. He carried that momentum into films like Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction, later reinventing himself with self-aware comedic turns in Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 and dramatic roles like CSI: Cyber, proving a rare ability to evolve beyond early stardom. His death closes the chapter on a career that spanned three decades — one marked by reinvention, resilience, and an indelible imprint on pop culture that continues to resonate with the generation that grew up watching him dream from a dock in Capeside. Tonight on Triple Feature, we're covering three football movies from the late '80s and '90s that approach the sport from very different angles: Varsity Blues, The Program, and Necessary Roughness.Varsity Blues, directed by Brian Robbins and written by W. Peter Iliff, was released in 1999, stars James Van Der Beek, Jon Voight, Paul Walker, and Scott Caan, and made about $54 million on a roughly $16 million budget. It's the small-town Texas football movie — pressure, injuries, and a tyrant coach — that became a cult staple. The Program, released in 1993, was directed by David S. Ward and stars James Caan, Omar Epps, Craig Sheffer, Kristy Swanson, and Halle Berry. It aimed for a darker, more realistic look at college football, steroids, and exploitation, grossing around $23 million and becoming best known for its controversies rather than its box office. And Necessary Roughness, from 1991, directed by Stan Dragoti, stars Scott Bakula, Robert Loggia, Sinbad, and Kathy Ireland. It's the disgraced-team rebuild comedy, made for about $13 million and earning roughly $25 million, and it helped codify a formula Hollywood would reuse endlessly.Three movies, three tones, three decades of football storytelling — let's get into it.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Timestamp to skip the intro: (11:00) Welcome back to another episode of the True Crime Society Podcast. In this episode we discuss two separate cases of missing celebrities: Joseph Pichler was a child star, best known for his roles in films such as Varsity Blues, Beethoven's 3rd and Beethoven's 4th. In 2006, Joseph's vehicle was found abandoned in Washington State with a note indicating that his belongings should go to his brother. Now, 19 years later, Joseph remains missing. Musician Richey Edwards was part of the British band ‘Manic Street Preachers.' Richey had a documented history of mental health and addiction struggles. Once when he was questioned about being serious about his music, he carved the words ‘4 Real' into his arm with a razor blade. The injury required 18 stitches. In February 2005, Richey was due to leave London to fly to the United States to begin a press tour. Instead, he left behind some of his belongings in his hotel and drove back to his apartment in Cardiff, Wales. Over the next few weeks, there were reported sightings of Richey in that country. His car would later be found abandoned near a bridge. Reported sightings of Richey have come from India and Spain. Richey has now been missing for over 20 years.
