Welcome back to The Overlooked Dark Knight, the podcast that shines a light on Batman stories hardly anyone talks about! Which is an outright lie this time out. Again. 30 years ago, this week, Batman Forever was released to theaters. It was kind of a big deal and in the three decades since it came out the film has become either beloved, the source of much mockery, or a mix of the two. Andy and Mike take an almost two-hour look at the film and, as usual, they do so from stem to stern. Val Kilmer as Batman. Chris O'Donnell as Robin. Jim Carey as The Riddler. Tommy Lee Jones as someone called Harvey Two Face. Nicole Kidman as Chase Meridian. Michael Gough as Alfred. Everyone gets a spotlight, as does the story, the set design, the score, and more. They also have a short conversation about the songs that were on the soundtrack but weren't, in some cases, in the movie. It was a lot of fun. This episode was recorded before the untimely death of Val Kilmer. Mike address it at the beginning of the episode but just in case you missed him talking about it, that's why Andy and Mike don't talk about during the course of their conversation. Andy and Mike want your feedback on this episode so they can read it on an upcoming show! You even have options in how you leave your feedback. The most direct way is to leave a comment right here on the site. You can also send all questions, concerns, fears and trepidations to overlookeddarkknight@gmail.com. Then there' the Facebook page, where you can also leave a Batman related question for Andy and Mike to answer at the beginning of the show. If you talk about this show on the social medias please include a #overlookeddk so the guys know where to find it. Next Time: Andy and Mike talk about the novelization for Batman Forever. Plus, the toys and some of the other merch from the film.

With her “glitter dipped” Marilyn Monroe-inspired performance, Drew lights up the screen in her brief but iconic moments. We're diving deep into the film's production — from how Drew landed the role through her friendship with director Joel Schumacher, to her dynamic with the star-studded cast, and the stunning style that made her character unforgettable. On today's episode, we discuss a movie that is deemed one of the worst Batman movies ever made by some. Others call it a misunderstood classic. This movie was the second film ever to cost more than $100 million to make and It was the movie that helped the Batman franchise break the $1 billion mark at the global box office. The first batman movie to refer to batman as the dark knight. On this episode of Remainders we watch the 2000 film The Beach. Leo's first major role to come after the star making success of Titanic, time has been kind to this movie about disaffection and discovery in a pre-9/11 world with emerging technology. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the film's roster has also led to a decades later reappraisal. If anything, The Beach is an incredible time capsule of late 90s/early 2000s culture and zeitgeist.Other topics include Danny Boyle's filmography, movie soundtracks and discovering new music in the 90s, 2000s music, new VHS in the collection, screenings in the cemetery, the Phoenician Scheme and Wes Anderson's style and legacy, Darren's new painting for Punk Rock & Paintbrushes, Brian Wilson, and Batman Forever and the rumored Schumacher Cut.Songs of the WeekDon't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) by The Beach BoysDarlin' by The Beach BoysA Three-Legged Workhorse by This Will Destroy YouRemainders Podcast Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

It's the 30th anniversary of Batman Forever, which makes a perfect episode for our Season Eight premiere. Joel Schumacher's zany, neon-drenched take on the Caped Crusader was polarizing but proved very popular at the time. It's gotten a lot of hate over the years but we suspect it has its fans. Batman Forever attempted to course correct the Caped Crusader's big screen adventures after its predecessor, Tim Burton's Batman Returns, was deemed too dark. Swapping Burton for Joel Schumacher in the director's chair, the film certainly has a different feel than Returns. It trades the dark and moody Gotham for a more campy, neon soaked one. That change may have led to greater receipts at the box office, but it hardly equated to a quality film. Batman Forever isn't without its charms, but it is also a tonal wreck, whiplashing between introspective musings of what it means to be Batman and the Two-Face/Riddler comedy hour. It's no wonder than that its star, Val Kilmer—who stepped in for Keaton—wanted no part of a sequel. Judging by our Batman & Robin pod, he made the right choice. Now, sit back, find the courage to fight crime with a Shiner Black Lager from Spoetzl, and don't over kung-fu your laundry! The Thunderous Wizard, Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are joygasming all over Gotham! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Courage now, truth always, Batman forever! Send us a textRemember the 90s, when superhero movies were still figuring out what they wanted to be? Before the sleek, unified vision of X-Men or the cultural juggernaut of the MCU, there was "The Phantom" (1996) – a fascinating relic that demonstrates exactly why superhero cinema needed a complete overhaul. In our latest episode, we venture deep into the jungle of Bengala with Billy Zane's purple-spandexed hero as he pursues magical skulls, fights pirates, and somehow manages to keep a straight face while doing it all. The Phantom originated in comic strips back in 1936 – predating Superman and Batman – as the first true costumed hero. But what works on the newspaper page doesn't always translate to the big screen, and this film struggles mightily with that translation.Treat Williams steals every scene as villain Xander Drax, delivering deliciously campy line readings and creative murder methods (microscope eye-stabbing, anyone?) that suggest he understood exactly what kind of movie this should have been. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast – including a young Catherine Zeta-Jones – seems trapped in a more serious adventure that never quite takes flight. We analyze the film's curious place in superhero movie evolution, sitting awkwardly between the camp of Batman Forever and the more grounded approach that would soon revolutionize the genre. The Phantom provides an unintentionally hilarious time capsule of mid-90s filmmaking choices, from its Indiana Jones aspirations to its baffling mythology involving skull lasers and a wolf that can apparently communicate with horses. What went wrong? What occasional moments work? And why can't we stop talking about that purple costume? Listen as we unpack this bizarre superhero curiosity that reminds us how far the genre has come.Written lovingly with AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a fantastic neo-noir that is carried by outstanding lead performances from Robert Downey, Jr. (RDJ) and Val Kilmer. Written and directed by Shane Black, it is a film that thrives on its witty banter, sleek visuals, and intricate plotting. Ok, that latter bit can sometimes be a bit convoluted, but that doesn't detract from the repartee. Kilmer has never been better than he is here. And RDJ capitalized on his exceptional performance as Harry Lockhart to catapult back into the mainstream. Yes, he's that good in this. Sadly, this movie didn't fare nearly as well at the box office as its spiritual successor, The Nice Guys, nor did it ever get the sequel it so richly deserved. He celebrates the long-overdue induction of Triple H, reflecting on his in-ring legacy and behind-the-scenes influence. A special segment is devoted to the induction of one of wrestling's most iconic moments: Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13—an induction not of a person, but of a legendary match that defined the Attitude Era. Tim explores how this match's storytelling and in-ring psychology continue to influence professional wrestling to this day. Finally, the episode wraps up with Tim sharing his initial reactions to the new season of Doctor Who on Disney+. Despite high hopes, he expresses disappointment, critiquing a perceived disconnect between the show's creative intentions and what actually makes it to screen. This week we're discussing Donald Trump's insistence that there's nothing wrong with America that can't be solved by simply denying your insatiable appetite for ever more dolls and pencils. Does the president's suspicion of all trade speak to the existential malaise of the modern American cursed to live in a time of obscene overconsumption, a people incapable of listening to their inner moral conscience in the face of so many tempting glittering baubles? Is the wage of living hypocritical lives in contradiction of our values a collective victimhood that prevents us from accepting responsibility for our actions? Are we a nation of fucking babies? Listen, if you must! Has something we said, or failed to say, made you FEEL something? You can tell us all about it by joining the conversation on our Substack or you can send us an email here. It was bound to happen at some point, and it finally has: wedged between the unfortunate passing of Val KIlmer and the 30th anniversary of "Batman Forever" comes our nostalgia-fueled review!
