Worksleeve started in 2018 as a weekly podcast to help engineering students get internships and entry level jobs. I was able to engage with students from all over the world and see my advice actually affect them in their career planning. I committed to this weekly podcast every single Wednesday for an entire year. In 2019, Worksleeve turned into a monthly podcast that focused on Asian American Studies, where I was able to meet so many individuals from across this country and hear their stories as Asian Americans. The podcast also took me to my first trip to New York City where I recorded a live interview at the Asian American Hotel Owners Association. And for the past 50 days, I’ve been recording and publishing this podcast to document the events that occur in my life as well as some content reflecting my creative process in podcasting. Today, August 10th, 2020, this will be the second to last episode of Worksleeve. If I was to write a book, Worksleeve will be a significant chapter… and like with all chapters, there must be an ending. As I prepare for the next chapter, I am now in a position in my life where I am embarking on a greater challenge of serving my community and making an Impact in South Dakota, which is my home. I am starting a business and am going back to school for my MBA. There will be one final episode of Worksleeve that will be published at the end of August. Thank you so much for listening to this podcast, and Id also like to take this moment and thank all the guests that have been on the show - its been truly a pleasure to speak with each and everyone of you. I’ve learned so many lessons in each conversation. ------------- PSA: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working to help keep you and your community safe from the threat of novel, or new coronavirus. EP 30 of the daily podcast, GET THE ROOM NOISE. There are a few essential components in each podcast episode. First is compression. Audio Compression is the process of adjusting a signal’s dynamic range. Dynamic range is the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of an audio signal. When you watch a movie and a character is whispering or speaking softly, the audience (being you) is able to hear the quiet voices because the audio is compressed! Obviously in reality, you probably won’t be able to understand a single word the character is saying from a distance. This is how films immerse the audience into intimate scenes, as if you were sitting right next to the person that is speaking. Furthermore, if you were to listen to an audio signal of a voice that is screaming and whispering, by using compression, you are effectively reducing the loud parts of a signal (the screaming) and you are increasing the quiet parts of a signal (the whispering). Next is a limiter. A limiter is similar to a compressor but the main differentiation between the two is that a limiter is generally done in the mastering phase of the production and is used to prevent an audio signal from exceeding a specified decibel, which prevents audio clipping. After the audio track is compressed and mixed, a limiter is used to amplify the overall volume of the track without degrading the dynamic range that was completed by the compressor. Id like to take this moment and differentiate between this daily podcast and The Worksleeve Podcast program. Right now, you are listening to Get The Room Noise. This is a daily podcast that serves two purposes: 1) the content in this program is designed to be under 5 minutes in duration for listeners who want quick content. 2) this podcast is about my creative process in podcasting. In addition, this program is to document the process of creating on a daily basis. Most episodes in this program is recorded and published on the same day. The second program on this platform is called The Worksleeve Podcast which is a monthly podcast that interviews and shares stories from creatives of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Diaspora. Generally, at the end of each month, The Worksleeve Podcast will publish a 30 - 60 minute episode that features a guest which highlights the stories that shaped them into the creatives that they are today. These episodes are promoted on the Worksleeve Instagram page. The last episode was number 62 featuring Creative Storytelling Coach, Haylee Thikeo. A new episode will be published at the end of this month, July 31st, 2020. One last thing: every single episode that is published on Worksleeve will explicitly detail the name of the program in the show notes. EP 22 of the daily podcast, GET THE ROOM NOISE. Months ago, I discovered an interview from Karrie Coughlin with Wilbur Sato. This interview was marked as Public Domain so I decided to experiment with sound design and modified the interview in small creative snippets of audio. I called this project, Bui Doi Journals. Wilbur Sato spent his early childhood in San Pedro and Terminal Island. When ordered to leave Terminal Island, his family went to Boyle Heights before being sent to Manzanar. Just after arriving at Manzanar, Sato, a stamp collector who'd had to leave his albums behind, had a birthday. To celebrate, he recalled that: "œWell, my mother surprised me with a couple of stamps. I didn't know what to do with them. In the past, I would save stamps and I would admire them for their color and design and dream about the places where they came from all over the world. And you'd study places on the map and learn all the capitals and all that, but, gee, after that experience I just, I just couldn't do it anymore. Just because of that connection somehow." The family left Manzanar for Des Moines, Iowa. The transition was difficult; Sato recalled a fellow student punched him in the stomach. Shortly after that, the other students rallied around him. Sato and his family eventually returned to California. Of his Manzanar experiences, Sato said: "œThis alienation that you go through, that stays with you for the rest of your life. Even now you wonder, "Gee, am I a part of this? Are these really my friends?' You just wonder whether or not you're a part. But you just have to put that aside and assume that you are, and just participate." EP 13 of the daily podcast, GET THE ROOM NOISE. Last year, I wrote a song about my fears of working the corporate 9-5 and falling into a cyclical and mundane lifestyle of money and becoming too comfortable. The bridge of the song is sang in an apathetic tone and recites the words that my therapist told me before starting my new job in Denver. My friend, Dyllan Harrington, helped me record, mix, and master this record and am I very pleased with the final product considering the time and energy that we put into the project in a cabin tucked away in the mountains. This was a new experience for me as I wrote the composition for each instrument and performed on the guitar, bass, vocals, and drums. This record is inspired by the work of Matt Berninger, Black Francis, Alex Edkins, Steve Albini, Kurt Ballou, and the late Grant Simanton. We released this EP under the Band name, Haunting Hands. EP 12 of the daily podcast, GET THE ROOM NOISE. "The first law of thermodynamics is a version of the law of conservation of energy, adapted for thermodynamic processes, distinguishing two kinds of transfer of energy, as heat and as thermodynamic work, and relating them to a function of a body's state, called Internal energy. The law of conservation of energy states that the total energy of an isolated system is constant; energy can be transformed from one form to another, but can be neither created nor destroyed."
