Years later, the boys finally talk about No Heroes by Converge. For realsies.
Converge experienced a significant transformation following the release of Petitioning the Empty Sky. They found a new bassist in Cave In's Stephen Brodsky, who would join the band on several releases in 1997 as well as their first proper full-length album the following year. This release also serves as the first full-length recorded, at least partially, by guitarist Kurt Ballou at the now-iconic God City Studios and the debut under their new label, Equal Vision Records. While their next album would arguably reshape the landscape of extreme music, When Forever Comes Crashing captures Converge at their most ferocious, precise, and unconventional yet. Join us this week as we conclude this era of Converge with When Forever Comes Crashing! With a lineage stretching several decades, Converge have solidified their reputation as one of hardcore's most influential and hardest-working bands. This wasn't accomplished overnight, but we may be able to pinpoint when things began to click. Originally released as a 5-song EP, Petitioning the Empty Sky currently stands as a collection of material from various recording sessions. Written by the combined forces of vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou, these tracks feature a familiar dissonance and intensity. This is far from the Converge we know today, but from the first moments of its 7-minute opener, it's clear that Petitioning the Empty Sky is a sign of great things to come. This week the fellas get a taste of blistering Arizona heat with the fantastic new album from Old School Death Metal darlings Gatecreeper, Dark Superstition.
Joining me today is Zach of the band Abrams whom once you listen to (if you haven't already) you will wonder what why and how they have been a long standing part of your listening rotation. Their new album Blue City is awesome and we talk plenty about it along with things like working with Kurt Ballou & Blues Funeral, Zach & I have hot takes on Mastodon that we randomly are in sync with, stories about leaving bass players behind and tons more, PUSH PLAY! Throughout the conversation with Matt Pike and Jeff Matz of Sleep and High on Fire, we discuss their latest studio album, Cometh the Storm. Our discussion goes into the album's thematic layers, focusing on tracks like "Sol's Golden Curse" and their relevance amidst current global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, left-wing political authoritarianism, and societal unrest. We also explore Kurt Ballou of Converge's role as the album's producer. Matt shares insights into his solo project, Pike vs. the Automaton, and its potential influence on Cometh the Storm. Reflecting on Third Man Records Vault Package #52, featuring Sleep's "Dopesmoker" with remastered audio, Matt provides his perspective. Additionally, he discusses Sleep's previous release, "The Sciences," marking their return after a hiatus. Jeff Matz offers insights into his dual commitment to teaching and music, and we touch upon drummer Coady Willis's recent performance in Australia with The Melvins. Kurt Ballou takes tone very seriously. He's been on the leading edge of aggressive guitar sounds since 1990, and Converge's fourth album, 2001's Jane Doe, is still seen as a game-changing release, with its ferocious performances and masterful production. His sonic temple, God City Studio, is the destination for artists looking to make their rawest, heaviest, brutalist work. Ballou has even developed a gear brand (God City Instruments) that includes guitars, pedals, and pickups, all in the pursuit of turning ideas into art.During our conversation before Converge's sold-out performance at Nashville's Basement East on May 22nd, Ballou dove into his Line 6 Helix spice rack and shared how 30 plus years as a guitarist and in-demand producer have informed his guitar-design philosophy. Plus, he detailed why his goal is to get to a place where “gear doesn't matter.” And then, longtime bassist Nate Newton joined the fun by showing off his “Riffblaster” setup and how a special P-Bass helps him honor a dear friend.Brought to you by D'Addario String Finder.

Aimee talks openly about songwriting, the process behind her records, time spent recording with Kurt Ballou and eventually lending some vocals to a Converge record. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 253 features an interview with Sammy Duet of Goatwhore. Does Goatwhore need an introduction? Formed by members of Soilent Green and Acid Bath, they were an exponent of USBM before those letters really meant anything. The band soon became one of the biggest to emerge from the American black metal scene - even as their sound grew to encompass thrash, sludge, and hardcore punk. I spoke with Goatwhore guitarist/co-founder Sammy Duet about how the band's NOLA origins shaped their sound, and the reactions their music elicited from European black metal fans. We also spoke about why their latest album Angels Hung from the Arches of Heaven is their ugliest, and Kurt Ballou's suggestions on improving their arrangements. My thanks again to Sammy for speaking with me, and to you for listening. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 227 features an interview with Come To Grief. Come To Grief are one of the few bands to be interviewed on this podcast twice. The last time I had the New England quartet on was soon after the release of their first EP The Worst of Times, and prior to their split EP with Fistula. The whole band (vocalist/guitarist Jonathan Hebert, guitarist Terry Savastano, drummer Chuck Conlon, and new bassist Jon Morse) took time from their recent tour to catch me up on what they've been doing for the last five years, and how they kept busy during their Covid times. They also explained why it took this long to release their first album, When the World Dies, and what led them to record at GodCity Studios with "sound wizard" Kurt Ballou. My thanks to Jonathan, Terry, Chuck, and Jon for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. Music In This Episode: "March of the Maggots" taken from the EP Pray for the End "Life's Curse" (featuring Jacob Bannon) "Devastation of Souls" "When the World Dies" taken from the album When the World Dies "Take Me In My Sleep" taken from the Come to Grief/Fistula split Thanks for listening! Jordan Buckley has made me laugh more than most anyone I know... I rarely get to hang with the dude these days, but I can still put on ANY Every Time I Die record and just laugh at how hilariously heavy and unrelenting that band was. I was always envious of his playing, his energy, and his artistic talents aside from guitar. This is a truly great conversation with Jordan about all things ETID, all this post ETID, all things that pushed and inspired ETID, working with Kurt Ballou, his work with John Taffer, his love of Buthole Surfers, Slayer, and Converge... But, most importantly how the impact of that band's legacy has impacted his life since its demise, how he processed the very public dissolve and what he's done to pick himself back up. In addition to new music in the works with 3 former ETID dudes, Jordan has launched an insane cameo page that you should check out, and a hub for all of his projects from art to airbnb! Head over to https://jordanbuckley.xyz/ for all things Jordan. From Shirts, to original art prints, to Every Time I Die tour posters, and more. Not a bit of shinfo to be found on that page. There is much more to this conversation (over an hour of ad-free extras and all the stuff we can't say in public) over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can also hear more unedited interviews with previous guests, patreon exclusives, and beyond! This week we conclude our examination of "Vysteria," the fourth 7" single released by Night Demon in 2020. The band discusses the track's lyrical themes, and explains how the lyrics came along as a collaborative process after the music had already been written and recorded. Jarvis takes you line by line through the lyrics to dispel some of the myths and misunderstandings about "Vysteria." Then each member reflects on his parts, and specifically the inspirations behind them and challenges they create in the performance context. They talk about why (as of the taping of this episode in early April 2022) the song had never been played live, but how they expect it to feature prominently in the setlist in the future. You will learn about the different mixes of the song, the cover art, the case of the missing 7" vinyl, the video, and the misguided reactions by certain quarters of the Internet.
