Episode 61 of the podcast, first aired in July 2021, features Brendan Kelly of The Lawrence Arms sharing the story behind the writing and recording of their 2014 fan-favorite track, "The YMCA Down The Street From The Clinic." Known for his razor-sharp wit and knack for crafting unforgettable lyrics, Brendan dives into the inspiration for the song, balancing humor and poignancy in true Lawrence Arms fashion. A standout from their album Metropole, the track showcases the band's signature blend of punk energy and reflective storytelling. Brendan's candid and hilarious anecdotes make this Throwback Thursday episode as entertaining as it is insightful, offering fans a deeper appreciation for one of the band's most beloved songs. Neil Kevin Hennessy (born December 12, 1978) is a punk rock musician, music producer and engineer from Chicago, Illinois. Hennessy currently plays in The Lawrence Arms, Colossal, The Falcon, The Smoking Popes, Sparta and is currently filling in on bass for Rise Against on their Blink 182 tour down in Australia because Joe the bassist had to fly home for personal stuff. He has also been a member of Noise By Numbers, Baxter, The Killing Tree, Quattro and played multiple shows with Teenage Bottlerocket. Fun fact, he co-wrote the Rise Against song "Swing Life Away" with McIlrath, and also played percussion on the Less Than Jake album, GNV FLA. I got him on the Skype and this is what we chat about: All the projects he's working on Joining Baxter The Chicago scene Killing Tree The Whipple House the Lawrence Arms starting Matt Allison Oh Calcutta The Falcon How the Lawrence Arms practices for shows now a days The War On Christmas Writing a new album The infamous Hennessy Painting And a ton more Be on the lookout for the Lawrence Arms new album sometime in the next year or so based on what he told me. On the 3rd Day of Christmas MLPP gave to me....."3 lads in Larry Arms"!Riaz Rawat, vocalist from Nuneaton's premier hardcore outfil Grail Guard is in to talk crimbo and to tell all the world about his love for The Lawrence Arms.
Brendan Kelly and his excellent punk-rock combo The Lawrence Arms have been waging a war on Christmas at various Chicago venues for 9 years now. Just a couple of weeks ago, their beloved and annual anti-Yuletide concerts lovingly dubbed “War On X-mas” sold out two nights at The Metro. So we figured Brendan would be the perfect guy to drop by and vent some holiday spleen while helping us pick —not the best— but the WORST songs the Christmas season has to offer. It will come as no surprise to the many Lawrence Arms fans out there that Brendan was more than up to the task. Merry Christmas, everybody!!!

This week's guest is No Trigger vocalist Tom Rheault. Though the long-running Massachusetts melodic punk project doesn't put out albums very often, they really make it count when they do. The 20-year vets released Dr. Album — only the band's third album ever, and its first since early 2012 — last month, and now they're playing some shows in support of the exceptional Red Scare Industries record. No Trigger performed at Riot Fest last weekend and they're gearing up to play a Punk In Drublic tour stop in their hometown of Worcester this weekend. Before both of those shows (as well as a show with The Lawrence Arms on Sept. 30 and an upcoming appearance at The Fest in October), Rheault spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the making of Dr. Album, getting back on the road and plans for 2023. Along the way, the singer talked about the early impact bands like NOFX and Rancid had on his musical trajectory, playing shows at gymnasiums and all-ages venues (where he regrettably threw pastries everywhere), starting the band that would eventually turn into No Trigger, unforgettable experiences he's had on stage and on tour through the years, and why people should consider micro-dosing. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. As the drummer of Kali Masi, John Garrison has performed all around the United States, toured Europe, played Riot Fest and FEST, shared the stage with the likes of The Lawrence Arms and Titus Andronicus, and released one of our favorite albums of last year (the altogether outstanding [laughs] via Take This To Heart Records). Years before he was keeping the beat for the accomplished Chicago punk quartet, Garrison was growing up in a Windy City suburb and practicing percussion in a bunch of short-lived projects that landed all over the map stylistically. Prior to Kali Masi's April 9 concert at Cobra Lounge and upcoming European tour with Spanish Love Songs, Garrison spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about getting back on stage after an extended pandemic-related pause, the band's new Patreon page and his musical start in basements and garages in Naperville, Illinois. Over the course of the conversation, Garrison talked about the influence his older brother had on his music taste, playing songs by Megadeth and The Hives in his middle school talent show, and finally finding musical kinship when he met his eventual Kali Masi bandmate Sam Porter in high school. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. In this episode of the podcast, Jackie and Jonny are back in the studio for a solo cast! In the comfort of their cave they talk about two things that keep getting better with time: vintage porn and The Lawrence Arms. A surprising amount of crossover there, despite our best efforts. This is episode is a special one. I know, I know, I say that a lot but hear me out. This one holds a special place in my heart because this was the first episode we recorded where we didn't know the guest and they didn't really know us. This could have gone off the rails. What if we didn't get along? What if the tone is off. Would this be a cold sterile interview of softball lobbed questions? "Oh you have a record out... oh a tour wow...". Nope. Brendan Kelly, who really needs no introduction to the punk world, is as generous, thoughtful and curious on this Episode as he is on his own Podcast, They Come To America and his outstanding catalog of music. This was a joy to record and it posed a unique challenge. What to cut? Pat and I have made a conscious choice to hold back material each episode so that we have some good stuff for our upcoming Patreon. This one felt different. We had some big conversations. Cutting a part of this one didn't feel right, particularly due to the fact that so much of what we talked about (aside from the most amazing Crash story we've had so far) was about doing what you feel to be right consequences be damned. So screw it. This is a much larger chunk of our conversation together. AMAZING Stories here. I'm beyond excited to share this with everyone. No previews this time. Just get surprised. One last thing, as I write this on a plane from Phoenix AZ to Denver. Thank you all. Pat and I love doing this and the feedback and responses have been amazing. Thanks to Brendan for making what is in my mind an ideal episode.Big ol' Yeti Hugs,Neal

Mike Park, owner of Asian Man Records, talks to the guys about starting a record label and cultivating both business relationships and friendships with the artists (including Less Than Jake, Alkaline Trio, and Lawrence Arms), which even led to him officiating weddings. He shares about his philanthropic organization The Plea for Peace Foundation and how he organized shows to enrich the lives of kids through music. There are some great anecdotes about life on the road with his band Skankin' Pickle, including unlikely tour-mates Yo Gabba Gabba! and a not-so-pleasant encounter with 311. Chicago's Kali Masi have been churning out some killer punk rock jams for nearly a decade now. The four-piece outfit have recently released their new album [laughs] via Take This To Heart Records, their first full length album in 4 years. Drawing easy comparisons to other Mid-West bands like Hey Mercedes, Alkaline Trio or Lawrence Arms, Kali Masi's music is layered with rich, melodic instrumentation, vocal hooks for days, and a pop-sensibility that still stays true to their punk roots. Sam and John stopped by the show to talk about the history of the band and the origins of the band name, what they've been doing during the pandemic, and to discuss some of their favorite bands coming out of the Chicago area. We spend some time discussing what touring post-pandemic may looking like, and they give me their 5 "trapped on a desert island" albums. Adam Gecking is the founder of Say-10 Records, a mostly punk-rock record label based in Virginia which he started in 2007 as a means of releasing music from bands that he loved. 14 years later and he's still going strong, having released well over 90 releases since the inception of the label. Recent releases from Will Wood, a split featuring Love Equals Death & The Static Age, Shehehe & even Green Jelly showcase the assortment of styles that the label has to offer. Beyond music, Say-10 has also released a line-up of skateboards featuring artwork associated with artists ranging from The Lawrence Arms to Lagwagon to Great Apes to Murder By Death. Recently, Say-10 has started a new project called Get Stoked which involves lathe-cut vinyl bundles in short-runs from a variety of artists, the first of which features The Eradicator, Decide By Friday, and Pedals on a Pirate Ship. Each volume in the series will have limited availability and will feature brand new artists in each one.
