Toronto's METZ were recently asked to reunite for a performance on Everybody's Live with John Mulaney, and so I dug into my archives for my first conversation with the band's Alex Edkins. My digging led me to our second conversation as well, so I've combined them here for you and other METZ fans. Alex and I had met a number of times at METZ shows before our first interview, which was a phoner that took place on Tuesday December 14, 2010, at 2:00 PM ET. Our next interview, again via telephone, took place on Tuesday June 12, 2012, at 1:00 PM ET, and we discussed the band's big news: they'd finished their debut album, and were about to start working with Sub Pop Records. To hear this entire conversation, subscribe to Kreative Kontrol on Patreon at the $6 tier or higher (a reminder that an annual subscription includes a discount compared to a monthly one).Related episodes/links:Ep. #854: METZEp. #850: You've Changed Records is 15!Ep. #719: Iain ReidEp. #687: Weird NightmareEp. #570: METZEp. #351: METZEp. #201: LIDSEp. #184: METZSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/kreative-kontrol. Noble Rot is the studio project of Alex Edkins (METZ) and Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck). Long time collaborators and friends, the two began working on Noble Rot following the cancelation both of their respective tours. In this episode we hear how the two met, what was behind their drive to document this sonic exploration and what kept them dedicated to the project. They share process of recording Heavenly Bodies, Repetition, Control and why visual artist John Smith is so important to the overall experience of the release. Joe urges them to take the record from a "studio project" to a "live project" and we hear a couple tunes. https://noblerotmusic.bandcamp.com/releases https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/products/noble-rot-heavenly-bodies-repetition-control-curated-by-jasamine-white-gluz https://strangeprocess.com/index.php https://www.metzztem.com/ https://www.holyfuckmusic.com/

As broadcast May 19, 2022 with plenty of extra heartache for your old school idealism. Tonight we mark the combustible but amicably broken up marriage between Stevie Wonder and Rita "Syreeta" Wright in 1970 and the amazing music that emerged from the acrimony in the end, including their lifetime friendship. After that, we play a lot of combustible funk & soul artists from back in the day while also wishing Sam Smith a very happy 30th birthday and marking new tunes from Drop MVP's like Monophonics, Surprise Chef, and Robohands amongst others. For parts 3 and 4 Dan Lloyd brings the rock and we turn it up to 11 by noting Spinal Tap's ostensible rise from the grave for a sequel. We also had new tunes from Viagra Boys, Cave In, Dune Rats, and our favorite new band Teen Jesus and The Jean Teasers to round things out for the show.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Syreeta – I Love Every Little Thing About YouSisters Love – Give Me Your LoveAlice Clark – Don't You CareThe Diddys feat Paige Douglas – Intergalactic Love SongsMonophonics – Sage MotelMonophonics – Love You Better Part II (32:21)Robohands – La Em CimaSurprise Chef – Spring's ThemeSam Smith – Stay With MeLittle Beaver – Get Into The Party LifeMica Millar – Heaven KnowsCharly Brown – The Sub Club pt. 1 Part III (61:09)My Chemical Romance – The Foundations of DecayViagra Boys – TroglodyteDeath Cab For Cutie – Roman CandleSports Team – The GameCave In – ReckoningPart IV (91:12)Dune Rats – Melted Into TwoTeen Jesus and the Jean Teasers – Girl SportsSpinal Tap – Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You TonightWeird Nightmare – WreckedLake Malice – Magic SquareBayside – Strangest Faces

This week, Features contributor Lee Gomez speaks with Alex Edkins of Toronto-based METZ in advance of their headlining show at the Metro on December 15th. They discuss the refining of their sound and Edkins' solo writing process, how becoming parents has refocused the band's priorities, preparing in advance and committing to Steve Albini's process during the production of 2017's Strange Peace, and creating a live album, Live at the Opera House, featuring a performance of their 2020 album Atlas Vending as a way to keep their musicianship skills strong during the pandemic and connect with their fans. "You just see the world differently, and that always seeps into the writing. I also think that it sort of makes you focus, makes sure you're using your time wisely. When we're out touring, we want the shows to be great. For writing, we want it to be the best thing we can make. Because it's time away from our families. And so that hits home pretty hard, you're like, let's not waste our time here. Let's make it count." - Alex Edkins Produced by DJ Ninja. Photo Credit: Norman Wong

In this episode of the Books of Some Substance podcast, Nick chats with Alex Edkins of the Toronto punk band METZ on the day that their latest record, Atlas Vending, came out. Alex highlighted J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise as a favorite, so we talk through the psychological, inner-space prophecies of the book and relate it back to our current technology-saturated landscape. Spoiler alert: we are all animals and the internet isn’t exactly helping. METZ’s latest full-length, Atlas Vending, is available now via Sub Pop Records. Listening to it might just provide enough cathartic release to prevent you and your fellow trendsetting urban condo-owners from sliding back into a lawless, primitive existence and reveling in constant acts of hedonism and violence. No promises, though — results may vary.
METZ frontman Alex Edkins joins CMWD to talk about their new album Atlas Vending, the greatness of John Candy, the universal depression everyone is feeling, the early Punk scene in Ottawa and life without live music. It's a great episode. Thanks to Bekah Zietz Flynn of Sub Pop for making this happen.Atlas Vending will be released October 9th 2020 on Sub Pop Records. EP 13 of the daily podcast, GET THE ROOM NOISE. Last year, I wrote a song about my fears of working the corporate 9-5 and falling into a cyclical and mundane lifestyle of money and becoming too comfortable. The bridge of the song is sang in an apathetic tone and recites the words that my therapist told me before starting my new job in Denver. My friend, Dyllan Harrington, helped me record, mix, and master this record and am I very pleased with the final product considering the time and energy that we put into the project in a cabin tucked away in the mountains. This was a new experience for me as I wrote the composition for each instrument and performed on the guitar, bass, vocals, and drums. This record is inspired by the work of Matt Berninger, Black Francis, Alex Edkins, Steve Albini, Kurt Ballou, and the late Grant Simanton. We released this EP under the Band name, Haunting Hands. This week's episode is a little unusual, in that it's made up of two interviews with out-of-town musicians. METZ are currently touring Western Canada with a couple of dates in Winnipeg (happening right around the time of this episode's release). They also have a new LP coming out this spring. The second half of the episode is conversation with the big homie **[Doug Feaver](http://www.witchpolice.com/2013/11/witchpolice-radio-episode-50-saturn.html) ** of Montreal sewer rockers **[Subsistench](http://swollencityrecords.bandcamp.com/album/subsistench-plastic-lies-demo)** (not to mention **[Dead Future](http://deadfuture.bandcamp.com/)** , **[Corona Ferox](http://coronaferox.bandcamp.com/)** and more). Subsistench has a new cassette out and they have an interesting connection with this podcast. A year or so ago, Doug was going to host some of his own Witchpolice Radio episodes out east, but when he sat down to record the first one, he ended up starting a band with the guest instead.
