EP 181 Slam Dunk 2025 Special   EP181 is Setting The Tone's Slam Dunk Special, the episode is broken down into my thoughts on this year's event and why you should consider attending Slam Dunk in 2026 As well brining you interviews from Defects, Grey Wind and New Found Glory.   Slam Dunk presented its 19th addition of what has become somewhat of a tradition for fans of alternative music, Slam Dunk currently takes place the last bank holiday in May across two separate days in the south and the north of the uk.   With 5 stages jam packed full of your different artists and bands across the attentive scene there really is something that will appeal to Somone's musical tastebuds   For those who may not be as familiar with the festival lets drill down, to give you an idea of what you can expect to see, this year's line-up had 58 bands.   four headliners A Day to remember making their first appearance playing on main stage west, Electric callboy on main stage east legends Alkaline trio closing the monster energy stage and Hot milk over on the kerrang stage.   Everything from bands/artists making their first to bands making their 11th And Legends like New Found Glory, Zebrahead, Alkaline Trio. To festival debuts for grew wind as I have already stated I feel Slam Dunk offers something for everyone's taste.   When does the festival start well if you would like make a day out of it then gates open at 11am and first bands usually start about 40 mins after gates open, so get to the festival early.     Helpful tips   Parking onsite, make sure you buy your parking in advance as traditionally they are not on sale on the day of the festival Transport methods Train-check with National Rail Coach packages can be purchase from see tickets in advance         So why should you go, well simply this it's a day festival that is very competitive in price and what it offers. people also have the chance to see as many bands in one day and not worry that they have to pick a day out of say a 3-day festival, so if anyone does struggle with getting to festivals and shows Slam dunk may just be the event for you.   As well as being the first alternative festival to kick off the summer it's a great chance to catch up with friends and start the summer.     This is a festival that started from humble beginnings and has continued to grow year and year out and just get better and better. So, what is holding you back and when should you if you have not already made your appearance at the festival well personally, I think next year is as good as any time.   2026 marks the festival 20th Year which is something that no doubt the organisers and people connected with the festival are aware of and are no doubt working on something very special There are no announcements as to who what the weekend will like yet, but if I had to take an educated guess, I would say expect to see some names from the very early days of the festival and to some festival favourites to some new names   It's going to be a very exciting 12 months to see how slam dunk marks their 20th and how they plan to do it because speaking only on the Hatfield site I think there is a little bit of space to play around with different ideas and layouts, I would expect some great merchandise and a very special weekend. As well as the uk addition Slam dunk has expanded into Europe which offers fans from Europe and even those who may wish to go to Europe the chance to catch slightly different lineups to the UK     Thank you, Slam Dunk and Alex, for the invite. Synopsis - Dany Schifter Punk Rock (Episode 43) In this episode of Dany Schifter Punk Rock, we dive into the raw energy and rebellious spirit of punk. We kick off with Patti Smith Group's "Revenge", a poetic yet powerful track that blends introspection with punk defiance. Then, we amp up the energy with SNFU's "The King Of Skin", a fast-paced, sarcastic anthem from the Canadian hardcore scene. Discount's "History Is History" follows, delivering a melodic yet thought-provoking take on the weight of the past. We also explore the legendary Stooges, the band that ignited the punk movement with Iggy Pop's primal energy and genre-defining sound. To close, we review "Plea For Peace, Punk Rock Music CD" (Asian Man Records), a powerful compilation featuring Alkaline Trio and The Bouncing Souls, proving that punk remains a tool for resistance and change. Punk is not dead. It's alive, loud, and still shaking the system! #DanySchifterPunkRock #PunkRock #PattiSmith #SNFU #Discount #TheStooges #HardcorePunk #PleaForPeace #AsianManRecords #PunkSpirit #DIY #StayRebellious #PunkNeverDies

2024 is in it's final days and as is traditional it's time for us to talk aout all of the fantastic music released this year. This year Tracey & Colin have been on board with Charli XCX's Brat summer, while Ian has pretty much avoided it entirely while he's been rocking out to masked Hardcore bands with salsa rhythms. It's been another absolutely amazing year for music and it's been really difficult narrowing it down to 10 songs each. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alkaline Trio, Ambiviolence, Arab Strap, Astrel K, Audiobaton, The Body & Dis Fig, The Bullfight & Henry Rollins, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Julie Christmas & Johannes Persson, Crippled Black Phoenix, The Cure, Exploring Birdsong, Bill Fisher, The Hanging Stars, The Hell, Hope Of The States, Horse Jumper Of Love, MJ Lenderman, LLNN, Magdalena Bay, Midwife, Mt. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Morrissey, Taking Back Sunday, Alkaline Trio, Streetlight Manifesto…For dedicated fans, these are bands that bring back memories of checkered Vans shoes, studded belts, and paper wrist bands from each show. But some of them haven't toured in years. So to see them all on one festival poster 20 years after their heyday made fans think it was too good to be true. It wasn't, and it lived up to the hype.So in this episode, we're talking about all the good - and questionable - marketing that went into the When We Were Young Festival. With the help of our special guest, Head of Content Marketing at CoreWeave, Brooke Gocklin, we're talking about painting the picture, building a community of advocates, and delivering on the hype.About our guest, Brooke GocklinBrooke Gocklin is the Head of Content Marketing at CoreWeave. Prior to joining the company in July 2024, she was the Editor-in-Chief at Contently, where she led content strategy and editorial direction for The Content Strategist and The Freelance Creative. Brooke is a recognized expert in content marketing, with a particular focus on the evolving role of AI in business. At Persado, an AI-language generation company, Brooke honed her skills in content creation for AI-driven solutions. Her deep understanding of technical products positioned her as a subject matter expert in the evolving AI space. Her work, featured in Adweek and Content Marketing Institute, reflects her deep understanding of how to craft impactful content strategies and engaging narratives that resonate with target audiences. What B2B Companies Can Learn From the When We Were Young Festival:Paint the picture. Show your audience what doing business with you would look like. When they're able to visualize the tangible benefits of becoming a customer, it makes it that much easier for them to sign on the dotted line. For the When We Were Young Festival, the organizers made a poster with album covers of all of the bands who would be performing. Ian says, “[It's] brilliant, right? You have to show people what it would look like. I have found over the years that if you can mock something up, it's so much easier, right? It's much harder to get an idea of something in a Google doc.” So paint the picture. Mock up an idea of what your product looks like for your audience.Build a community of advocates. Bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Taking Back Sunday have created communities of fiercely loyal fans. Brooke says, “And so that means that when you see all of these bands coming together, the reaction is, is this even real? But two, it gives you a sense of like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have to be there. And I have to tell my friends about this.' And so I think that for B2B marketers, you know, really leveraging customer advocates or people who are just really excited about your product or service to amplify your message builds trust in a wider audience. So choose customers who love you, who love your product, who love your service and leverage them to tell others about you.”Deliver on the hype. You can tease about a product or service as much as you want, as long as it delivers what it promises. Brooke says, “When We Were Young created a massive buzz with a huge lineup. They also did a lot of teasers, but most importantly, they really backed it up with a well organized incredible event. Credibility is so important. So you can't just hype something up whether that's your product or service. And not have it live up to expectations. So as marketers, I think it's really crucial when you're thinking about B2B, to build trust and credibility from the get go. So whether that means that you're creating content that is factually accurate and all of the products and features, functionalities live up to what you're selling them as. That is important, right? So you need to establish your brand as a go-to resource, but you do that by being credible.”Quotes*”As far as how I think about content, it's really like connective tissue. I think it's at the core and at the center of a brand story. So, you need content to be able to bring people into the funnel. You need content as they're exploring, getting to know you. You need content when they're at that purchasing stage, or even after they become a customer, you still need them to engage with you. And you need to be putting out ideas that provoke some sort of thought and that's valuable to them.”*”Really good content marketing is about creating value for your audience and really helping them solve their problems. So my approach has always been: start with the audience. What do they care about? What are their challenges? And then craft content that speaks directly to those needs. Episode 205: Smoking Popes

Vinyl Emergency

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2024 86:30

It's not out of bounds to say that the Smoking Popes began as a bit of a joke. Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Josh Caterer deems the earliest incarnation of the band as “a Spinal Tap version of hardcore punk,” choosing song titles first and how those songs would actually go later. But after finding a propulsive drummer in a teenage Mike Felumlee, the quartet began showing true heart around 1993: no longer just goofing off in the garage, Caterer was penning some of the punchiest, most direct odes to lost love on the college radio dial, emphasizing all the best parts of the Smiths, Cheap Trick, Roy Orbison and the Ramones, while feeling wholly original. It's now been three decades since Born To Quit, the band's heroic half-hour featuring “Need You Around” and “Rubella,” put them on the map. And although an LP reissue dropped earlier this year (without the band's consent or knowledge), Josh and Mike decided that the Popes needed their own “Taylor's Version” of sorts, in order to take these songs back into their possession — even in the most modest of terms. So before a minimal audience in a small, central Illinois studio, the band chose to cut Born To Quit live, front to back, and a vinyl version comes out this week to put a stamp on the occasion. During this episode, Josh and Mike speak to their longevity as a unit, what we can expect from their brand new album this spring, and what it meant to control Born To Quit's legacy a bit, with this new approach. We also dive into Mike's tenure in Alkaline Trio, and Josh's solo performances pressed to wax during the 2020 lockdown. It's showtime, maniacs! This episode is a monumental occasion for many reasons. Not only is A Comedy Of Horrors coming to an end, not only is it our seven year anniversary, but it's also Gregg's final episode as a full-time host. For these reasons, we had to end on an absolute home run, so we're prepping for the upcoming sequel and discussing Beetlejuice from 1988. Grab a Zagnut and tune in as we break down the flick and talk about other topics such as the inexplicable Pittsburgh connections to this movie, Alkaline Trio suits versus Smash Mouth suits, and how this PG movie is definitely not for kids. Drop that Caramello and check out our Patreon! This month we play a little game Gregg cooked up called Pit Or Pass? Six songs have been selected, all cover songs by late 90s and early 00s nu-metal bands, and we decide whether we hit the pit if it's good or we check out the merch booth if it's bad. For as little as $2 a month you can get in on the action as well with bonus episodes, Discord privileges, livestreams, exclusive merchandise and more! This episode contains Pittsburgh acting legend Michael Keaton, so you probably want more episodes featuring actors from Pittsburgh! Check out our previous episodes containing the work of Tom Atkins: Halloween III (episode 7), Night Of The Creeps (episode 52), The New Kids (episode 87), Creepshow (episode 104), Maniac Cop (episode 130), and The Fog (episode 296). We've also discussed the late great Kevin Peter Hall in Predator (episode 204) and One Dark Night (episode 301). And who could forget Jeff Goldblum in The Fly (episode 76)?

Your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, is back on this episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast to let you know what's been going on and what you can expect on the next episode, which will be released next week. The news in this episode revolves around festival line up announcements, tour date announcements and cancellations, new album announcements, Ex Anti-Flag frontman, Justin Geever being sued for sexual assault, Crass releasing a picture book, Kevin 'Geordie' Walker from Killing Joke passing away, GWAR making a new film in which they save Earth from destruction, Shane MacGowan passing away, Spotify changing their royalties structure to stop two thirds of the songs on the platform from making money, Dead Kennedy's debut album reaching Gold status in the US 43 year after its release, and Manny Martinez (an original member of Misfits) passing away. I review singles and EPs release by Feeder, Gogol Bordello and Bernard Sumner, Cherym, Alkaline Trio, IDLES, Green Day, Sum 41, The Cult and Pendulum. However, there was only on album I was keeping an eye on to review this month: Just Before The World Starts Burning by The Sleeping Souls, a.k.a. Frank Turner's backing band. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday period, and a Happy New Year! Ted Stryker welcomes the awesome Matt Skiba from Alkaline Trio to Tuna on Toast! Matt and Stryker talk about the band's new album, 'Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs' and how he chose that title. Matt details his childhood and his Mom and Dad's experience in the Vietnam War. He also tells a story of going to see Social Distortion as a kid, along with early punk shows that influenced him. Matt shares his thoughts on songwriting and his surprising influences -- from Ani DiFranco to Elton John. Matt discusses his time in Blink-182 and how working with Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker influenced the new Alkaline Trio album. Matt also shares his reaction to Blink's new music! Matt Skiba tells Stryker about his first photoshoot with Blink-182, and explains why it's the only thing he'd change about his time in the band. Matt talks about the late great Jerry Finn and his favorite Warped Tour memories. Alkaline Trio's new album was recorded at Dave Grohl's 606 Studio. Matt discusses the experience, and explains how Alkaline Trio knew Josh Freese was in Foo Fighters before everyone else. Matt also talks about the Alkaline Trio album he CAN'T listen to. Matt Skiba is such a cool and talented guy. I'm super grateful he was so open and talkative! Subscribe to Tuna On Toast, follow us on social media, and thank you for supporting the show!
