Rockin' Down Under With BENJAMIN BERDOUS From SLOMOSA

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersThis week the global rock underground is shifting its focus Down Under as Norwegian stoner rock prodigies Slomosa touch down for their first-ever Australian headline tour. Armed with their critically acclaimed album Tundra Rock, the Bergen-based quartet is prepared to bring a sonic avalanche to local music venues.Dubbed the "New Kings of the Stone Age" by critics, Slomosa has captured global attention by bridging continents with their self-coined genre, Tundra Rock. Their signature sound seamlessly fuses the classic, sun-baked distortion of the California desert rock scene with the icy, atmospheric weight of their Nordic homeland. The result is a monolithic wall of sound packed with Kyuss-style riff worship, grunge-laced hooks, and a relentless punk energy. This devastating live reputation is no mere internet hype; the band has already spent years leveling massive European festival stages and earning public praise from legendary heavy hitters like Helmet, Mastodon, and Alkaline Trio. This lightning-fast, three-night headline run promises to turn local rooms into sweaty, high-octane mosh pits. Joined by Australian heavy-rock mainstays Khan, the tour kicks off on Friday, 22 May at Max Watts in Melbourne, moves to Crowbar Sydney on Saturday, 23 May, and wraps up at Crowbar Brisbane on Sunday, 24 May. With tickets selling fast and Aussie fans eager to witness this sonic collision of desert heat and Arctic frost, this is a landmark debut tour you cannot afford to miss. HEAVY caught up with frontman Benjamin Berdous on his day off to find out more. We spoke about what the band are doing in their down time, their excitement to finally make it to Australia and their determination to leave everything on stage.Benjamin talked about playing smaller, more intimate venues as opposed to larger festival stages, their nightly mission when they hit the stage, mixing songs from the bands two albums into a setlist and more.Tickets www.thephoenix.auBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

What is up? Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming, a podcast powered by Big Fat Snare Drum. This week I'm re-airing a classic Big Fat Five episode with Tosh Peterson. Long before playing with Lady Gaga and Alkaline Trio, Tosh sat down with me to break down the records, mentors, and moments that shaped his drumming voice. We talk about discovering Thomas Pridgen at 10 years old, learning how to command a stage from Tommy Lee, what Snoop grooves taught him about making people move, and the lessons he learned touring with Nick West at just 16 years old. Inside this episode: Meeting Thomas Pridgen for the first time and eventually studying with him for years Why groove and making people dance mattered more than playing perfectly Learning confidence, leadership, and stage presence on tour with Nick West Tommy Lee, pyrotechnics, and why Tosh believes drummers should steal the spotlight The influence of Tosh's dad and the roots of his playing style --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!

"We're a little egoless. We're happy to just do the content, be a part of the lighting, or help anybody execute and create something cool." — Robb Jibson In this episode, I sit down with Robb Jibson, the founder and creative director of So Midwest, a Chicago-based production design firm. Robb has spent decades building the visual experiences that define live music for artists like Fall Out Boy, Incubus, and Panic! At The Disco. We discuss his journey from a teenager in Michigan to the center of the concert production world. Episode highlights The "Tetanus" origin story: Robb recounts his early days in a metal band called Tetanus and how an attempt to use car headlights for stage lighting led to a run-in with the law and a formative stint doing community service at the Frauenthal Theater. Touring with the Backstreet Boys: At just 19 years old, Robb landed a spot on a tour with the Backstreet Boys during the height of their popularity. The birth of So Midwest: Originally started as a tax shelter while touring with Incubus, the company name was inspired by a simple 1-inch button found at the Empty Bottle. The shift to motion graphics: Robb explains how the industry transitioned from "smoky beams of light" to complex video content and 3D animation around 2007. Working with Chicago legends: We talk about his long-standing relationships with local favorites like Alkaline Trio, The Lawrence Arms, and Chevelle. Ever since we were young lads, we played the silver ball. From Pacific Beach to Scottsdale, we must have played them all. But you ain't seen nothing like this in any podcast hall. This week, these lads sure talk a mean pinball! Many musicians have been honored with their own branded pinball tables - from The Beatles, The Stones, and Elton John to Iron Maiden, Rush, and Guns n' Roses. What are some other bands who are deserving of their own machine? This week's conversation is fueled by fantasy and fun, as we welcome one of the coolest couples in the world - Mike Felumlee (drummer for Smoking Popes) and Stephanie Wysocki. Mike & Steph have combined their shared passion of raw rock n' roll and pinball into Punk Rock Pinball. They co-host the wonderful podcast of the same name, and host tournaments and live shows at the Punk Rock Pinball HQ. The goal is to foster a scene that feels welcoming, fun,and DIY at any skill level...not intimidating or gatekept. On the fun-o-meter, this episode pretty much gets the high score. Take that, Tommy! Follow my instagram Matt Allison is a Chicago-based music producer known for capturing the raw, unpolished energy of punk, emo, and indie bands without sanding off their personality. Working out of his Atlas Studios, he's helped shape records for bands like Alkaline Trio, The Lawrence Arms, and The Menzingers, giving them that punchy, lived-in sound that feels like a basement show bottled up. His production style leans toward honesty over perfection, letting grit and character sit front and center instead of hiding behind glossy overproduction. In a world of hyper-edited music, Allison's work feels like a deep breath of analog air, where imperfections become the hook. For Thrice drummer Riley Breckenridge, returning to Australia is never just another tour stop, it's a highlight etched deep into the band's history. From their earliest visits alongside Hot Water Music and Alkaline Trio to their most recent run in 2023, Australian audiences have consistently left a lasting impression. “The crowd response blew our minds,” Breckenridge recalls, noting that no matter the venue size, the enthusiasm has never faded. This upcoming tour sees Thrice bringing Horizons West to Australian stages for the first time, a record shaped by reconnection both musically and physically. Unlike Horizons East that was written remotely, West was crafted together in the same room, allowing the band to focus on how songs would translate live. The result, Breckenridge says, is some of their strongest live material in years. That sense of evolution also extends to Thrice's legacy. Revisiting The Artist in the Ambulance has given the songs new life, refined by decades of growth while retaining their emotional urgency. “A lot of it has aged like a fine wine,” he reflects. With a setlist spanning over two decades, Breckenridge promises a cohesive, dynamic journey that honours the past while celebrating where Thrice are now. As always, Australia remains central to that story. Riley even shared that he'd move here if he could and if he does you can thank me for encouraging him to do so, so that his family can witness kookaburra's first hand.Tickets: https://sbmpresents.com/tour/thrice-2026Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Apologue Podcast

Toronto's melodic punk lifers Wasting Time are back with their new single “Ripped Blue Jeans”, out December 12 via People of Punk Rock Records. It's a nostalgic rush of anthemic hooks and heart-on-sleeve energy that could've soundtracked any MTV's 120 Minutes marathon. The track captures that feeling of late 90s freedom, cracked sidewalks, stickered guitars, the smell of sweat and stale beer in community-hall venues, and long summer nights when the world still felt small enough to dream your way out of it. Formed in 2017, Wasting Time has steadily built a catalog rooted in melody and sincerity: five EPs, three full-length albums, and a streak of singles that echo the honesty and grit of Alkaline Trio, No Use for a Name, MxPx, Blink-182, and Green Day. Their latest release, Hurry Up and Wait, cemented their reputation as one of Canada's most reliable carriers of melodic punk tradition, and “Ripped Blue Jeans” only deepens that lineage. Mixed and mastered by Matt Gauthier at Arc Studios, the single offers the first taste of their upcoming full-length, Are You Out Of Your God Damn Mind?, due out in the new year. The song hums with the spirit of a simpler time, before algorithms and playlists, when discovery meant burning mix CDs or catching a new band between Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtracks. You can almost see the baggy Dickies, chain wallets, and flannel shirts tied at the waist. It's a nod to every kid who ever scribbled lyrics in the margins of a school binder or fell asleep to Dookie playing on repeat. Wasting Time capture that pulse without imitation; it's not nostalgia for its own sake, but a reminder of why those songs mattered in the first place. On this episode of P Is for Punk, we dive headfirst into the return of one of Chicago's darkest and most influential punk bands: Alkaline Trio. After a six-year gap, the Trio dropped Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, an album that's equal parts urgent, melodic, and unapologetically bleak in the best way. We break down the band's history, the era that led to this record, and why this album marks both the end of one chapter and the rebirth of another. Spin Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs wherever you get music.  I'll figure out the format eventually..

YoutubeFacebookXInstagramBioNORTHERN KENTUCKY – Orchid in the Ivy, the hard-hitting alternative rock triofronted by Brett Scharf, is turning heads with the re-release of their fiery, pop-punkrendition of “Beds Are Burning.” Originally recorded some time ago, the band recentlyremixed and relaunched the track to pave the way for their upcoming five-songEP—proving that rock is far from dead and Scharf's creative fire is still blazing.“We did a new mix,” says Scharf of the Midnight Oil classic. “We kinda did it a whileago, and we basically did a whole remix... people will maybe recognize it a little bit andthen kinda get your feet wet again with it—and then go with the five song EP after that.”The result? A faster, sharper, and more aggressive version of the politically chargedanthem—reborn through Orchid in the Ivy's melodic punk-rock lens. “I always thought ithad a great groove to it,” Scharf explains. “I was messing around with it one day andjust thought, ‘God, if we sped this up, this would be more like almost a punk rock tune.' Idon't think they realized how kind of heavy and punk rock that song could actually be.”For Scharf, who once toured alongside now-household names like Fall Out Boy andMotion City Soundtrack in his early band Spindle, Orchid in the Ivy represents a rebirth. After years of navigating the ups and downs of multiple projects, including RosemaryDevice, Scharf stepped into the role of lead singer “more out of necessity than anythingelse.” That unplanned shift uncovered a sound—and voice—that finally felt right.“I put some vocals down on a couple songs and asked my drummer what he thought. He liked it, and we just kept going forward that way,” says Scharf.Since forming in 2013, Orchid in the Ivy has remained fiercely self-sufficient. The bandrecords everything at Scharf's own studio, allowing them the space to experiment andevolve. “We were trying to really find out our sound,” Scharf says. “I think in the last fiveor six years, we really found our voice.”That voice blends the emotional punch of Brand New's The Devil and God Are RagingInside Me with the melodic grit of Alkaline Trio's Crimson and the urgency of RiseAgainst. The upcoming EP, while not including “Beds Are Burning,” follows hot on itsheels, with singles set to roll out every six to eight weeks.“There's a little more emotion involved in this one,” Scharf notes of the new material.“The stuff I've been writing for this EP—and even the next one—is just a little morepersonal. With everything going on in the world, it just seems like a chaotic time.”Though Scharf's journey has spanned decades and many stages, his passion hasnever faded. “The older I got, the better the writing got,” he says. “There's always beenthat inspiration of finding new music, being creative. That's always been a passion ofmine.”And for fans of raw, heartfelt rock music, the message is clear. “Rock's not dead,”Scharf insists. “I hope we can burst through the scene and break some barriers again. There's still a huge audience out there—and just because major labels aren't signing it,doesn't mean they're not there. That's what rock has always been about: breaking downbarriers.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

Dan and Vinny dive into the Ultimate Alkaline Trio Setlist! Both our hosts agree that this band has had a major impact, even if they aren't played on the radio as much as some of their contemporaries. Because of the band's cult following, both Dan and Vinny were able to make some very unique and interesting sets. Which setlist do you think is better? We'd love to hear your ideas!
