Good Friday Three of the greatest events that has brought HOPE into humanity: 1. Christ’s birth (Emmanuel God with us); 2. Good Friday; 3. Resurrection Luke 23:32-43 (NIV) -  32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with Him to be executed. 33When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals-one on his right, the other on His left. 34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His clothes by casting lots. 35The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at Him. They said, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” 36The soldiers also came up and mocked Him. They offered Him wine vinegar 37and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” 38There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at Him: “Are you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” 40But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42Then he said, “Jesus remember be when you come into your kingdom.” 43Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” 2nd Criminal: He was stunned. He had never thought it would end like this. How can this be happening? How can this be happening to me? Sure, he was a criminal, a thief. Sure, he made his way through life by taking without asking. And sure, he had some run-ins with the law — some pretty close calls. Yet, he never thought it would end like this. How could this be happening? But the screaming and insults of the crowd, the pain of the rough wooden cross on his back, the sound of the hammer pounding the spikes, and the horrible pain — all they said about being crucified was true, the awful truth. He was being crucified. This second criminal knew — he knew now that it was over. He only hoped that death would come quickly now. It was all over for him. Was it over? We know that this criminal was one of three men to die that day. The scene on that garbage dump outside of town — Golgotha, the place of the skull — was crowded as usual. These executions were entertainment for a lot of folks. There was some sort of fascination with crime and violence and blood and suffering, there was the usual crowd. Just like it is today. But something was different about this day, and this second criminal noticed it. He recognized the other criminal on the cross. But this third man in the middle — what was His name? It should have been Barabbas here This Jesus, who was He? And what is this big deal that the soldiers are making over Him? Why this crown of thorns? Why these peculiar insults? He was used to insults at crucifixions, but not like these: “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Messiah of God, His chosen one. If you are king of the Jews, save yourself.” NB! Then he hears some peculiar words from Jesus Himself. Very unusual. Usually the condemned swear or curse or moan or beg — but Jesus just says “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” Slowly, this second criminal begins to figure it out. This man Jesus is no criminal. Slowly, listening to the talk of those around him and recalling the stories he’d been hearing around town, this second criminal begins to put it together. This is the one they have been talking about. This is the one who has been talking about God’s mercy and compassion, about God’s care for the poor, and the oppressed and the stranger in our midst, about God’s love for all people — a love that never gives up or let’s go. This is the one who’s been talking about justice and fairness and steadfastness and a new life of faith. This is the one who says He’s going to bring it. This crucified Jesus is the one. The second criminal recalls other stories. This Jesus not only talked about God’s love, compassion and mercy, He lived it out. He ate with sinners, hung-out with those on the fringes of society, touched the diseased. He made the lame walk, He made the blind to see, He restored the crazy to their right minds. And He said this was only the beginning. More was to come. God’s love is so great that we haven’t seen anything yet. ”Save yourself and us. ”This shout interrupts the second criminal’s thoughts. He turns to the first criminal and hears those words: “Are you not the messiah? Save yourself and us.” He listens to the insults and contempt of the first man for a while longer. Then he turns to that man. “Be quiet!” the second criminal shouts. “Do you not fear God … you are under the same condemnation; do you not fear God?” “We have been condemned justly. We are getting what we deserve. But this man … this man Jesus has done nothing wrong, nothing wrong at all.” There is a silence. Then the second criminal turns to face Jesus. The two men look at each other, both are wracked with agony and the tortured suffering of the cross. And the criminal quietly says to Jesus: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus looks back at the man. In the midst of His pain, a gentle smile crosses His face. Jesus responds: “Truly, I tell you, this day you will be with me in paradise.” Was it over? The second criminal thought it was. He thought it was all over. But something happened. In the midst of his suffering, bad choices, in the midst of his pain, in the midst of his regrets, in the midst of the insults around him — in the midst of his horrible struggle, he turned his face toward Christ, and he was never the same. “This day you will be with me in paradise.” It was not over. None of us gets a free pass-through life. Our lives can be filled with pain and difficulty that is nearly impossible for us to bear. There can be trouble that seems insurmountable. We can wallow in the depths of despair, loneliness, anxiousness, confusion and fear. We suffer. We struggle to make sense out of life. We do not get the things we are hoping for. We lose people who are dear to us. But today we are reminded that we need not go it alone. It does not matter who we are; it does not matter what we have done; it does not matter what other people think of us; it does not matter what we think of ourselves. It does not matter. Because today we can be renewed in Christ. In Jesus, God lived among us and with us. In Jesus, God continues to live among us and with us. God knows our ache and our pain, knows our suffering and our anguish, knows our fear and anxiety. God knows our despair and despondency, knows our anger and confusion, knows our grief. Our God has faced our death. Through it all God in Christ overcame the pain and the struggle, the suffering, the anguish and despair, the deep and abiding grief that can be a part of our lives. God overcame it all and said that life can be renewed and that we can live fully, that we can have hope now and forever. We need not be alone. “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Thanks be to God. Amen.   ======================================= Communion   Matthew 26: 26-29 (NIV) – 26While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to His disciples saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27Then he took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

God Answers Your Prayers From His Perspective And Not In Your Expectations. Genesis 18:31 - 33 31Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?” He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.” 32Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?” He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.” 33When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

Welcome to Hope City Church! NEW If you are new to Hope City text “HCNEW” to 33777 SERMON GUIDE Truish Part 4 - Good Is Better Than True (Moralism) Big Idea: The biggest threat to your faith is not bad behavior but bad beliefs. Moralism = a strong belief that moral, usually traditional behavior, should be shared by all. Romans 3:9 “No one is righteous—not even one.” Philippians 3:9 I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God's way of making us right with himself depends on faith. Luke 23:32-43 Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. 33When they came to a place called Calvary, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. “He saved others,” they said, “let him save himself if he is really God's Messiah, the Chosen One.” The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. They called out to him, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” A sign was fastened above him with these words: “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you're the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you're at it!” But the other criminal protested, “Don't you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn't done anything wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” It doesn't get more fair than Christianity…. Everybody is welcome, everybody gets in the same way, everybody can meet the requirement. Discussion Questions 1. What are your biggest motivations for going to church? 2. Do you feel like Christianity is fair? Why or why not? 3. Do you know anyone that found Jesus after a life of “bad behavior”, like the thief on the cross? What's your reaction to that? 4. How does it make you feel that getting into heaven doesn't depend on your behavior, but on what Jesus did for you? A Plot to Kill Paul 12When it was day,the Jews made a plot andbound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.13There were more than forty who made this conspiracy.14They went to the chief priests and elders and said, We have strictly bound ourselves by an oath to taste no food till we have killed Paul.15Now therefore you, along with the council, give notice to the tribune to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case more exactly. And we are ready to kill him before he comes near. 16Now the son of Paul's sister heard of their ambush, so he went and enteredthe barracks and told Paul.17Paul called one of the centurions and said, Take this young man to the tribune, for he has something to tell him.18So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said, Paulthe prisoner called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, as he has something to say to you.19The tribune took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, What is it that you have to tell me?20And he said,The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more closely about him.21But do not be persuaded by them, for more than forty of their men are lying in ambush for him, whohave bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they have killed him. And now they are ready, waiting for your consent.22So the tribune dismissed the young man, charging him, Tell no one that you have informed me of these things. Paul Sent to Felix the Governor 23Then he called two of the centurions and said, Get ready two hundred soldiers, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go as far as Caesarea at the third hour of the night.[a]24Also provide mounts for Paul to ride and bring him safely toFelixthe governor.25And he wrote a letter to this effect: 26Claudius Lysias, tohis Excellency the governor Felix,greetings.27This man was seized by the Jews andwas about to be killed by themwhen I came upon them with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman citizen.28Anddesiring to know the charge for which they were accusing him, I brought him down to their council.29I found that he was being accusedabout questions of their law, butcharged with nothing deserving death or imprisonment.30And when it was disclosed to methat there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once, ordering his accusers also to state before you what they have against him. 31So the soldiers, according to their instructions, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.32And on the next day they returned tothe barracks, letting the horsemen go on with him.33When they had come to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they presented Paul also before him.34On reading the letter, he asked whatprovince he was from. And when he learnedthat he was from Cilicia,35he said, I will give you a hearingwhen your accusers arrive. And he commanded him to be guarded in Herod'spraetorium. Paul Before Felix at Caesarea 24Andafter five days the high priestAnanias came down with some elders and a spokesman, one Tertullus. They laid beforethe governor their case against Paul.2And when he had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying: Since through you we enjoy much peace, and since by your foresight, most excellent Felix, reforms are being made for this nation,3in every way and everywhere we accept this with all gratitude.4But, to detain[b]you no further, I beg you in your kindness to hear us briefly.5For we have found this man a plague, one who stirs up riots among all the Jews throughout the world and is a ringleader ofthe sect of the Nazarenes.6He even tried to profane the temple, but we seized him.[c]8By examining him yourself you will be able to find out from him about everything of which we accuse him. 9The Jews also joined in the charge, affirming that all these things were so. 10And when the governor had nodded to him to speak, Paul replied: Knowing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense.11You can verify thatit is not more than twelve days since Iwent upto worship in Jerusalem,12andthey did not find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues or in the city.13Neither can they prove to you what they now bring up against me.14But this I confess to you, that according tothe Way, which they calla sect,I worshipthe God of our fathers, believing everythinglaid down by the Law and written in the Prophets,15havinga hope in God, which these men themselves accept, that there will bea resurrectionof both the just and the unjust.16So I alwaystake pains to have aclear conscience toward both God and man.17Nowafter several yearsI came to bring alms tomy nation and to presentofferings.18While I was doing this, they found mepurified in the temple, without any crowd or tumult. Butsome Jews from Asia19they ought to be here before you and to make an accusation, should they have anything against me.20Or else let these men themselves say what wrongdoing they found when I stood before the council,21other than this one thingthat I cried out while standing among them: It is with respect to the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you this day. Paul Kept in Custody 22But Felix, having a rather accurate knowledge ofthe Way, put them off, saying, When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will decide your case.23Then he gave orders to the centurion that heshould be kept in custody but have some liberty, and thatnone of his friends should be prevented from attending to his needs. 24After some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, and he sent for Paul and heard him speak aboutfaithin Christ Jesus.25And as he reasonedabout righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you.26At the same time he hopedthat money would be given him by Paul. So he sent for him often and conversed with him.27When two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by PorciusFestus. Anddesiring to do the Jews a favor,Felix left Paul in prison.

Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King Occasion: Proper 29 Sunday, November 24, 2019 Year (cycle): C The Collect:  Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament:  Jeremiah 23:1-6 [Alternate: Jeremiah 23:1-6] 1 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. 2Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. 3Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. 5 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.'   Psalm:  Canticle 16 [Alternate: Psalm 46] Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; *        he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *        born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, *        from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers *        and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, *        to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, *        holy and righteous in his sight        all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, *        for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give people knowledge of salvation *        by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God *        the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *        and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *        as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alternate: 1 God is our refuge and strength, *        a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, *        and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea; 3 Though its waters rage and foam, *        and though the mountains tremble at its tumult. 4 The Lord of hosts is with us; *        the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 5 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, *        the holy habitation of the Most High. 6 God is in the midst of her;   she shall not be overthrown; *        God shall help her at the break of day. 7 The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken; *        God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away. 8 The Lord of hosts is with us; *        the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 9 Come now and look upon the works of the Lord, *        what awesome things he has done on earth. 10 It is he who makes war to cease in all the world; *        he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear,        and burns the shields with fire. 11 "Be still, then, and know that I am God; *        I will be exalted among the nations;        I will be exalted in the earth." 12 The Lord of hosts is with us; *        the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Epistle:  Colossians 1:11-20 11May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. Gospel:  Luke 23:33-43 33When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, ‘He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!' 36The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37and saying, ‘If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!' 38There was also an inscription over him,* ‘This is the King of the Jews.' 39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, ‘Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!' 40But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.' 42Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.' 43He replied, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.'

GENESIS 24: In Genesis 22, Isaac asked, “I see that you have the coals and the wood, but where is the lamb for the sacrifice?” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide one.” It is amazing to me that Moses adds the proverb, “even today people say, “On the Lord's mountain he provides.” In our time, we easily see how this points to the provision of the Lamb of God on the mountain called Calvary. JOB 13: As we saw in chapter 12, Job by now is pretty ticked off, starting off with, “Yes, you are the voice of the people. When you die, wisdom will die with you. Note the irony Job points out: 4 Even my friends laugh at me now; they laugh, although I am righteous and blameless; but there was a time when God answered my prayers. 5 You have no troubles, and yet you make fun of me; you hit someone who is about to fall. 6 But thieves and godless people live in peace, though their only god is their own strength. MARK 8b: In yesterday's reading, Jesus fed the 4,000, and then the Pharisees demand a miraculous sign ‘showing God’s approval’— literally a sign ‘from heaven’. The reading yesterday ended with the disciples not understanding what Jesus meant by 15 “Take care,” Jesus warned them, “and be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.” GNT Translation notes: [When you see [brackets] in my transdation notes, the first words inside the brackets are my translation suggestion. The words after the // slash marks are the GNT text.] Gen. 24:33When food was brought, [Abraham’s servant//the man] said, “I will not eat until I have said what I have to say.” 65b “He is my master,” the servant answered. On the way he asked them, “Tell me, [What role do people say that I am fulfilling?”//Who do people say I am?”] 29 “What about you?” he asked them. “[What role do you say I am fulfilling?”//Who do you say I am?”] [Normally in our language if Jesus said, “Who do people say I am,” the answer would be “Jesus.” Jesus was not asking about his name, so in most of the world’s languages this calls for a different question opener than ‘Who’.] 31 Then Jesus began to teach his disciples: “[I as the//The] Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. [I//He] will be put to death, but three days later [I//he] will rise to life.” [In many of the world’s languages, verse 31 would be translated as above, to show that Jesus is not talking about some third person named the Son of Man, but about himself. Even in English, a man seldom talks about himself using the pronoun ‘he’.]   NLT Translation notes: Mrk. 8:23 Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then, [applying his own spit to//spitting on]  the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?” [The Greek does actually say that Jesus 'spit' in the man's eyes, but to spit in someone's face is so objectionable that more than one translation softens this a bit!] 27 Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them, “[What do people say as to the position/role I am assuming?”//Who do people say I am?”][Normally in our language if Jesus said, “Who do people say I am,” the answer would be “Jesus”. Jesus was not asking about his name, so we need a different question opener than “Who”.] 28 “Well,” they replied, “some say [you are taking the position of] John the Baptist, some say [you are replacing] Elijah, and others say you are [filling the role of] one of the other prophets.” 29 Then he asked them, “[But in your opinion, whose position am I taking?”//But who do you say I am?”]… 31 Then Jesus began to tell them that [he— as] the Son of Man, must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He [said, “I will be] killed, but three days later [I will/he would] rise from the dead. [The changes in this paragraph are made to show that Jesus is not talking about some third person named the Son of Man, but about himself. Even in English, a man seldom talks about himself using the pronoun 'he'.]

The Crucifixion 26As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' 30Then    " 'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!"       and to the hills, "Cover us!" '[d] 31For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?" 32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."[e] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 35The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One." 36The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." 38There was a written notice above him, which read:|sc THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!" 40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." 42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[f]" 43Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."Jesus' Death 44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. 47The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, "Surely this was a righteous man." 48When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. 49But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
