3.30.25 | Matthew 20:17-28Jesus had all authority—yet chose to serve. As we begin our Easter series, discover why true strength in God's Kingdom looks like surrender, and how Jesus' suffering wasn't just an example… it was the way He saved us.
Luke 11:14–28Jesus and Beelzebul[14] Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. [15] But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” [16] while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. [17] But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. [18] And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. [19] And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. [20] But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. [21] When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; [22] but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil. [23] Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.Return of an Unclean Spirit[24] “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.' [25] And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. [26] Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.”True Blessedness[27] As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” [28] But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (ESV)
The Greatest Sign - Matthew 12:38-50The Greatest SignWhen the child of GodLooks into the word of GodAnd sees the Son of GodThey are transformed by the Spirit of GodInto the image of GodFor the glory of God-Warren WiersbeSigns are important because they give us the information we need to make right choices. When the meaning of the sign is obvious, we don't need another sign, we need to act on the information the sign conveys. - Matthew 12:38-50The Sign that saves - V. 38-42They asked for a sign, Jesus gave them a sermon – about the greatest sign to come – His resurrection.Matthew's first audience was his fellow Jews, and only he repeats the Jewish idiom Jesus used, “three days and three nights.” The other gospels use the other way Jesus said it, speaking of rising on the “third day.” The accounts complement one another. It must have irked these Pharisees to hear Jesus preach that God had justified pagans from what is now Iraq and Arabia because they had repented and believed, yet they would be condemned for their unbelief!Crucifixes emphasize a perpetually suffering savior; but empty crosses emphasize our victorious risen Lord!“My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me!” - Matthew 27:46“It is finished!” (Tetelestai) - John 19:30Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. - Hebrews 7:25The Situation that doesn't save - V. 43-45The key to understanding verses 43-45 is that last statement – so also will it be with this evil generation. Jesus is saying this situation adequately describes that generation in Israel who rejected Jesus. To their credit, the Jews had rejected pagan idolatry when they came back from the Babylonian captivity hundreds of years before. That idolatry had been fueled by the kind of demonic spirit that had left the house. Like the house in the story, they had put in order matters of external worship, but still had not filled the house with true internal worship of God. When the spirit of idolatry came back, it brought different demonic spirits with it: pride, unbelief, ingratitude, self-righteousness, a judgmental spirit, contempt of others, and lack of love. Their condition was worse than the days of overt idolatry.Changes you make on your outside will not help you in the long run if Jesus is not on your inside! The Sibling that sticks closest - V. 46-50John 7:5 says that Jesus' brothers did not believe in Him. Mark 6:3 tells us some of Jesus' brothers' names – James, Joses, Judas (Jude) and Simon, and also tells us he had sisters. Just before Mark tells us the same thing Matthew 12 does, it says, “When his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they said, “He is out of his mind” (Mark 3:21).As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” - Luke 11:27-28Jesus is not telling us here not to take care of family priorities, but He is making clear that believing in Him and doing what He says is every believer's highest priority. If you part of God's family through faith in Jesus, begin regularly praying “Yes, Lord,” in every area that is clear in the Bible.

+ Holy Gospel according to St. Luke 21: 20 – 28Jesus said to his disciples:"When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, know that its desolation is at hand. Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. Let those within the city escape from it, and let those in the countryside not enter the city, for these days are the time of punishment when all the scriptures are fulfilled.Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days, for a terrible calamity will come upon the earth and a wrathful judgment upon this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken as captives to all the Gentiles; and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand."The Gospel of the Lord

Mark 1:21-28Jesus and his disciples went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out: ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.' But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!. And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, ‘What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He* commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.' At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. Bob was fighting unclean spirits all the time: in himself, at the church, all around. The first time I met Bob I was leading service by myself for the first time at St. John's in Phoenix. Bob walked onto campus wearing three coates, sports goggles, and had a large buck knife hanging from his belt. He mumbled his first words to me: who are you and who do you serve? What a greeting right? I quickly, and as kindly as I could, introduced myself and asked him who he was. He said “they call me Bob. I'm a warrior of the Lord.” Okay… Church starts in like 5 minutes. By this time I am sweating bullets, which was normal in Arizona but this was way worse. So I ask Bob if he's been here before and says, “are you getting cross with me…?” No, no, no Bob. (Please I think to myself, I just want to get through my first service!) Finally I told Bob he was welcome to join us, we'd be happy to have him, but the knife stays out here. He said “oh I know that, maybe I will or I might be here”.Bob didn't join us that day, but he kept coming back. Each time he was a little less threatening and we got to know each other more. Bob felt he had demons, real unclean spirits, attacking him or surrounding him wherever he was. He would patrol the perimeter of the campus to ward them off. He would point at them and curse them; unafraid to walk right up to them. For Bob, expelling demons was a part of his everyday life.I suspect many of us don't know what to do with stories in the Bible about casting out uncleaning spirits or exorcizing demons. We think we are so different from Bob or the man in the story. Afterall, we don't really believe in those types of things, do we? We have science, the scientific method. None of it has proven the existence of demons or unclean spirits, right? In our western minds, demons and unclean spirits exist only in indigenous cultures, or scary movies, or in folks who are seriously mentally ill. But should we be so quick to dismiss this notion? Just because we don't understand or haven't experienced them doesn't mean they aren't real, does it? I asked our faith formation students if they thought angels and demons existed, and their opinions were across the spectrum from “absolutely i've experienced them” to “absolutely not.”I like what Mary Oliver says in her poem, “the World I Live In”. She writes: I have refused to live locked in the orderly house of reasons and proofs. The world I live in and believe in is wider than that. And anyway, what's wrong with Maybe? You wouldn't believe what once or twice I have seen. I'll just tell you this: only if there are angels in your head will you ever, possibly, see one.Can not the same be true of unclean spirits? I am not trying to suede you or convince you to believe demons or angels are real. However, we should not write off others' experiences so quickly, like the man in our story or my friend Bob. If anything, perhaps our understanding of unclean spirits is too narrow, which means our view of Jesus' power and ministry is too narrow, too.Jesus, along with his first four disciples, strolled into Capernaum. Then on the sabbath, Jesus walked right into the synagogue and began teaching. He must have been feeling rather confident, maybe from seeing the heavens rip open at his baptism or from defeating the devil's temptations in the wilderness. Regardless of why, he taught with authority, as one who is sure and passionate about what he's saying. And in the midst of that, the man with the unclean spirit comes up to him. That's what we read, “a man with an unclean spirit”. Yet, what the Greek says is a little more terrifying… It reads, a man “in” an unclean spirit… as if the unclean spirit has swallowed up the man, so much so that he could no longer be identified apart from the spirit that's overtaken him. He was known only by this thing that had taken control of him, running and ruining his life. So when the man cries out “what have you to do with us Jesus?”, I don't think he's referring to all the people in the synagogue, but instead referring to himself and the demon he can't shake. And asking if Jesus has come to destroy “them” makes it clear: the man is consumed, terrified, and unsure what Jesus will do… We too know what it's like to be swallowed up by unclean spirits, so much so that our identity is unknown apart from the demon we have. You don't call it an unclean spirit, but when you get so angry you can't see straight, what else is that? Or when you fixate your gaze on a person, or a screen, or on sex. When you obsess about always getting more: more money, more stuff. When you can't see the good things in front of you and only wish for what others have. When someone knows you not for who you are but only for what and who you stand against. All of these spirits can swallow you up so that no one can see you apart from them. They can run and ruin your life. And maybe you too are consumed, terrified, and unsure what Jesus will do…This story, the first public action of Jesus ministry, tells us that Jesus is more powerful than any unclean spirit we could face. With as much authority as he taught with, Jesus commands the unclean spirit to shut up and come out, setting the man free. And the spirit does just that, but not without a fight, shaking and screaming until the end. We've all been possessed by unclean spirits: powers that hurt you and others, voices telling you that you aren't loved, things that seek to divide, disparage, and denigrate. We all want to be set free. Thankfully, that's what the mission and ministry of Jesus is all about. In baptism, God claims you as God's own and covers you in the grace and forgiveness only Jesus offers. Rather than a life full of anger and greed, jealousy, and hatred, at the font and at this table we are invited and empowered to live a life of peace and generosity, discipline and love. But how do we experience this liberation? For some of us, it was quick, like a grace-filled lightning strike and your life was forever changed. For others of us the path of healing and freedom is longer and requires more companions along the way: like the unending support of a Stephen minister, the persistent presence of Al-anon meetings and sponsors, a parent support group, a prayer partner, or a fantastic therapist. We can be confident that God works in all of these ways, and more that we may not even notice, to liberate us from unclean spirits. What is the unclean spirit that swallows you up? What's the thing trying to run and ruin your life? Often we are too scared to name it, to examine it, in case it takes greater hold of us. How's that going for you? Instead, what if we take a cue from my friend Bob; rather than ignore or deny it; point at, curse it, be unafraid to ask God to free you from that which threatens you, trusting that Jesus is still more powerful than any spirit we face.Maybe we aren't so different after all. Amen
Trusted & Trustworthy – Biblical Stewardship Part 2: A Steward is Faithful By Louie Marsh, 1-21-2024 1) Stewards MUST be faithful. “1This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:1–2, ESV) Required = sought for. This is what we're looking for when we want a Steward, someone faithful. If they aren't faithful then they aren't right for the job. 2) Being Faithful Means…. · I put Christ over CULTURE. “1For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— 2assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you, 3how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. 4When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. 6This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” (Ephesians 3:1–6, ESV) · I put Christ over CAREER. “18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.” (Mark 1:18–20, ESV) · I put Christ over WEALTH. “5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” 6So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully… 8And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”” (Luke 19:5–10, ESV) · I put Christ over FAMILY. “27Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” 28Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.” (Matthew 19:27–29, ESV) · I put Christ over HEALTH. “18Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19(This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”” (John 21:18–19, ESV) · I put Christ over EGO. “3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.”” (John 13:3–10, ESV) o Ego is the most PERNICIOUS of them all! Pernicious: 1. causing insidious harm or ruin; ruinous; injurious; hurtful:pernicious teachings;a pernicious lie. 2. deadly; fatal: Close with wrestling illustration.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 28th of October, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the book of Song of Songs 2:14, the book of love: "O my dove, in the clefts of the rock,In the secret places of the cliff,Let me see your face,Let me hear your voice; For your voice is sweet,And your face is lovely."Then we go back a little bit to verse 10:"My beloved spoke, and said to me:"Rise up, my love, my fair one,And come away." What beautiful words! Then we go to Psalm 35:9: "And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord; It shall rejoice in His salvation."Do not become so very busy that we neglect our first love. You know, people come to see me from time to time because they have problems with their marriage, and I sit down, and I ask them, "Is there a third party? Is there someone else who is getting involved in your marriage?" And they say, "No," and I say, "Well, what is the problem?" They say, "We want to get divorced because we don't have anything in common anymore." So sad! What happened to your first love? You neglected it because of the busy schedule that you have, and you know, the excuse that many of us use as men is that "I was so busy working for my family." Come on now guys, let's get real. For a lot of us, it was for our own ego. We were building our own empire and it cost us our marriage. Don't go there.Revelation 2:4, the Lord says, "… I have this against you, that you have left your first love." Now, that is tragic. It must not happen. That is exactly what the devil wants to do: to keep you and I so busy that we neglect our first love. "…I have this against you, that you have left your first love." What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul? I want to say to you today, work on your first love. Jesus is waiting to talk with you this morning. As soon as this little message is finished, I want to challenge you to find a quiet place, sit down and start to talk to the Lord. Tell Him how much you love Him, and ask for forgiveness for how you have neglected to spend quality and quantity time with Him because if you neglect your first love, what have you got left? Absolutely nothing. So Jesus bless you today as you rekindle that first love and it will take care of all of your problems. "Come unto Me, all of you who labour and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest."Matthew 11:28Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.
15Escureceram o sol e a lua, e as estrelas perderam o brilho. Então Jesus lhe disse: “Vai e faze a mesma coisa”.
The Table : Inclusion | Matthew 15:21-28Jesus table is open to absolutely anyone. Yes really! So how do we as God's people begin to embody Jesus' inclusion.
Wade McComasMatthew 15:21-28Jesus will cause all necessary offence to save you.
Matthew 15:21-28Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” He answered, “It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that moment. I want to introduce two friends of mine who have been instrumental in my life. There is quite an age difference between us, 60 years or so, and their arrest records are quite lengthy. Meet Sister JoAnn Persch and Sister Pat Murphy, both sisters of mercy and co-founders of the Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants. In the summer of 2015, I spent four months with them on the southside of chicago. On my first day, I walked in and Sister JoAnn greeted me at the door saying, “hurry up and get in the car; you're gonna make us late”. Sister Pat Murphy in the middle and Sister JoAnn Persch on the right. I never expected to work or get involved with immigration. Up until that point in my life, I felt a call into ministry but never to immigrants, people who broke the law, who crossed boundaries they shouldn't. Why couldn't they just come in legally I thought. But then, I encountered the sisters, these women of great faith, who remind me so much of this woman Jesus encounters in our reading this morning. This story is one of the most difficult stories we read in the gospels because we see the human side of Jesus like we've never seen before. Jesus is leaving Gennesaret, a small town on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Ironically, he just finished telling the disciples that its not what goes in your mouth that defiles someone, but what goes out. Jesus is making his way north to the region of Tyre and Sidon, both of which are gentile territory. Jesus had never gone to such a place thus far in his ministry. This isn't all too surprising since Jews viewed Gentiles as unclean and even inferior; that includes Jesus, who only made negative comments about the gentiles until now: saying things like “Don't be like the gentiles who only welcome and love their own kind, who say empty words and promises” and don't go near them nor bring the gospel to their towns and territories. If Jesus had these beliefs and preconceived notions, why go to these towns in the first place? Matthew doesn't tell us of course. On the way, this woman comes shouting at Jesus “have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David”. To our ears this doesn't sound scandalous, but it certainly was. Women didn't approach men in public, especially not gentiles who weren't exactly on speaking terms with Jews. To make matters worse she's called a Canaanite, the ancient foes of Israel. There was no land of Canaan at the time of Jesus, but obviously the sentiment that these people are enemies was still prevalent. The woman must have heard that Jesus had healed many people plagued with a demon so this was her chance to get her daughter healed. Yet for some reason, Jesus completely ignores her. Undeterred, the woman proceeds to shout, making a scene in public. Out of pity or maybe annoyance, the disciples ask Jesus to give her what she wants and send her away. Again Jesus refuses, and gives a reason for his less than Christ like actions: “Gentiles aren't my mission; I am a shepherd to Israel and Israel alone''. This coming from the man who said to the disciples when thousands gathered in the desert, “you give them something to eat”. Now he won't even give this one woman the time of day?As a last ditch effort, the woman throws herself on the ground in front of Jesus, kneeling before him. You can imagine her, head bowed down to the ground, hands folded together tucked beneath her chin as she begged for help. It's a position of worship and respect, but it's also one that is not so easily ignored. Jesus now has to address her.And he does so, but in a most shocking way. “It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs”. The Jews (the people of Israel) are the chosen people, God's people, while the Gentiles, well, they are dogs and not simply dogs, but in the Greek text it says little dogs at that. Some argue that the diminutive lessens the slur, making it more endearing like a lap dog or even a pet. But I've never known that adding little to any insult makes it any less insulting. The woman, quick with wit, reminds Jesus that all she is asking for is a crumb of the healing he so abundantly gives to the children of Israel. Even the most strict masters allow for that. Right then something changes in Jesus, he recognizes the great faith of this woman, and does exactly what she asks, instantly healing her daughter.Through this one encounter with a woman who was an outsider of outsiders, in a place he said he wouldn't go, Jesus's understanding of his mission and ministry changed. No longer was he only the shepherd for the lost sheep of Israel, but the savior of the world. Gone is the belief that the gospel isn't to go beyond the Jewish people. Instead, Jesus will say take it to the ends of the earth, baptizing and making disciples of all nations. Through this woman's great faith, I'd like to think that Jesus' beliefs and preconceived notions (as Matthew tells them) are forever altered, and he sees more clearly the love and purpose God gave him. All it takes is one encounter with someone whom we believed certain things about, who we'd drawn a boundary between, and who we could have sworn we weren't called to help, one encounter and all of those divides come crashing down. And it is to those people and places, the outsider of outsiders, in places that we wouldn't normally go into, that God calls us to.That encounter for me was with Sister JoAnn and Sister Pat. Like the woman of great faith, they crossed all sorts of barriers put in their way to get help for the people who needed it. They shout and protest in public, calling attention to the immigration system that tears families apart, hurting children most of all. Like the woman, they too make a scene in public, getting down on their hands and knees in front of deportation buses as an act of worship, forcing people of power to reckon with their cry for help. Every Monday I would get in the car with them and drive two and half hours outside of Chicago to a detention center where we would meet with immigrants. I can still hear the desperation in their voices as they lowered their heads, hands tucked under their chins and begged for help, for prayer, for sooner court dates, for anything that would reunite them with their loved ones. I remember Ray from Jamaica, Jose from Honduras, Habbi from Uganda, Lee from China, Caleb from Ethiopia. Our encounters forever changed the preconceived ideas and beliefs I had, widening the narrow idea of who I was called to serve and to love. God calls us to cross the divisions we've made that separate us and encounter people on the margins of society, the outsiders of outsiders. And that call is as incessant as the woman shouting at Jesus for help. Because all it takes is one encounter with someone we'd least expect for the Holy Spirit to change or shift our understanding of what we believe and break down the barriers we have about who is worthy of our help and who is not. Who is God calling you to encounter and challenge the too narrow idea of who's worthy of your love? Where is the spirit leading you that will force you to reckon with the long held bias or beliefs you hold? My prayer is that you have a Sister JoAnn and Sister Pat in your life, exemplars of great faith who lead you to encounters you never thought you'd have. And at those encounters, may Jesus change your heart just as the woman changed his.Amen.

JESUS' ARRIVAL IS THE REDEMPTIVE TURNING POINT IN ALL OF HISTORY.Among those who seem to know nothing of the Bible, this is the verse that seems to be most popular. Yet most the people who quote this verse don't understand what Jesus said. They seem to think (or hope) that Jesus commanded a universal acceptance of any lifestyle or teaching. Just a little later in this same sermon (Matthew 7:15-16), Jesus commanded us to know ourselves and others by the fruit of their life, and some sort of assessment is necessary for that. The Christian is called to show unconditional love, but the Christian is not called to unconditional approval. We really can love people who do things that should not be approved of.DAVID GUZIKChristianity has been the driving force behind some of the major events of world history including the Christianization of Western and Central Europe and Latin America, the spreading of literacy and the foundation of the universities, hospitals, the development of art and music, literature, architecture, contributions to the scientific method, just war theory and trial by jury.Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance, the only thing it cannot be is moderately important.C.S. LEWIS"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me"JOHN 14:6Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.JOHN 6:35For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”JOHN 6:40If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that He said; if He didn't rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what He said?TIM KELLER3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles[b] of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.GALATIANS 4:3-6Pleroma: that which has been filled; a ship inasmuch as it is filled (i.e. manned) with sailors, rowers, and soldiersTHE FINE TUNE ARGUMENTWHAT MAKES JESUS' ARRIVAL THE FULLNESS OF TIME? FAILURE OF LEADERS, KINGS, AND FALSE IDOLS (rock-bottom)Israel could not produce its own Savior. Instead, Jesus is born of Mary as the result of God's gracious intervention into Israel's history through the creative action of the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time God provided what human history by itself could not.DAVID HOLWERDAI can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.PSALM 139 HUNGER AND ANTICIPATION (truth-seeking) PROPHECY (God's word doesn't return void)24 “Seventy weeks[c] are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.[d] 25 Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again[e] with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.DANIEL 9:24-26A century ago in his book The Coming Prince, Sir Robert Anderson gave detailed calculations of the sixty-nine weeks, using ‘prophetic years,' allowing for leap years, errors in the calendar, the change from B.C. to A.D., etc., and figured that the sixty-nine weeks ended on the very day of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, five days before His death. Whether one uses this timetable or not, the point is that the timing of Christ's incarnation ties in with this detailed prophecy recorded by Daniel over five hundred years beforehand.GOT QUESTIONS ROMAN RULE (coincidence or fine-tuning?)Hellenization: “greekifying” of the whole world“It was a time when the pax Romana extended over most of the civilized earth and when travel and commerce were therefore possible in a way that had formerly been impossible. Great roads linked the empire of the Caesars, and its diverse regions were linked far more significantly by the all-pervasive language of the Greeks. Add the fact that the world was sunk in a moral abyss so low that even the pagan cried out against it and that spiritual hunger was everywhere evident, and one has a perfect time for the coming of Christ and for the early expansion of the Christian gospel.”BOICE28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[h] for those who are called according to his purpose.

– Palavra do Senhor. Friday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary TimeMT 16:24-28Jesus said to his disciples,“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
Today's Reading: John 20:1-2, 10-18Daily Lectionary: 1 Samuel 5:1-6:3, 10-16; Acts 18:1-11, 23-28Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher) (John 20:16)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Mary Magdalene received a number of blessings from the Lord Jesus. In Luke 8:1-3, we read about how Jesus healed her by exorcizing seven demons. Once this miracle happens, Mary follows Jesus, and the blessings continue to come as she listens to the teachings of her Lord. Then in John's Gospel, we read that Mary is the first person to see the resurrected Jesus. At first she does not recognize Jesus. Maybe the tears, and the fact that she was an eyewitness to His death on the Cross, have so clouded her vision that the empty tomb, the angels, and even the appearance of Jesus Himself cannot cut through the sadness that fills her being. Mary is seeking a dead body, for she saw it taken down from the Cross. This living man standing before her could not be Jesus, so he must be a gardener. Mary only knows the truth when she hears, "Mary." The voice of her Savior is unique, it is powerful, and it has authority. Jesus speaks one simple word, and Mary knows who He is. And all is now good. Jesus, who died on the Cross for the sins of the world, is now alive, and He comes with life and salvation. Like Mary, all of us have received blessings from the Lord Jesus. Jesus called you by name. In Baptism He spoke your name and brought life, hope, and salvation to you. No longer are you dead in your sins. Now, because of Jesus, you are forgiven. The blessings of the Lord do not stop with Baptism. Weekly the Lord comes in bread and wine, and at the altar you receive His very Body and Blood, a blessing that forgives your sins, strengthens your faith, and preserves you all the days of your life. One day we will once again hear the voice of our Savior Jesus. On that day, He will call us by name, and we will arise from our graves to live and serve Him forever in Paradise. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Almighty God, Your Son, Jesus Christ, restored Mary Magdalene to health and called her to be the first witness of his resurrection. Heal us from all our infirmities, and call us to know You in the power of Your Son' s unending life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Collect for St. Mary Magdalene) -Rev. William K. Stottlemyer is pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hancock, MD.Audio Reflections Speaker: Rev. Duane BamschChristians need to aspire to being people of THE faith. Not just any will do. In Faith Misused, Dr. Alvin Schmidt shares his case for a Christian reclaiming of the word “faith” from its ambiguous modern uses. Now available from Concordia Publishing House.
- Palavra do Senhor. - Graças a Deus. Anúncio do Evangelho (Lc 10,25-37) — O Senhor esteja convosco. — Ele está no meio de nós. — PROCLAMAÇÃO do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo + segundo Lucas. — Glória a vós, Senhor. Então Jesus lhe disse: “Vai e faze a mesma coisa”. — Palavra da Salvação. — Glória a vós, Senhor.
For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website.Scriptural study: Mark 1:21-28Jesus and his first followers enter Capernaum, Jesus' adopted hometown (v.21).Notice the word “immediately," showing us the broad impact of Christ, and in a staccato manner relating his baptism, temptation, preaching ministry, calling of the first disciples, exorcism, healings, and cleansing of a leper. This is going to be the first miracle, and exorcism, of Mark's gospel. All are amazed at his teaching (v.22; also v.27) – like Matt 7:28-29. More compactNotice what day it is: the Sabbath. (More on this in Mark 2:27-28.)Responding to the proclamation and supernatural knowledge of the demon (v.24), Jesus tells the demon to be quiet—this is unwanted publicity (v.25). His disciples aren't ready to handle Jesus' identity until Mark 8 (at the earliest). This is an unclean spirit—demonic possession is a form of impurity. On the Sabbath—reinforcing the point that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.Convulsion: just leprosy? See Matt 4:24.Loud! And Jesus had told him to "be silent." (Though it's probably the demon's trumpeting of Jesus' divine identity that Jesus wants to shut down.)Authority over the invisible, spirit world? This can only be divine authority. His fame spreads (v.28), even without assistance from the man who was exorcized. This miracles sets the stage for Mark's gospel: Jesus as divine Son of God, with authority over the spiritual world.Freeing the crazy man in the synagogue from his unwanted "house guest" mirrors the cleansing and transformation God offers us!ApplicationGod's compassion includes healing (though not for everyone—the Word-faith and Signs & Wonders people are wrong).God wants to remove any uncleanness—demonic or otherwise—from our life!God can powerfully transform lives—free us from the power of the Evil One—and quickly! What is it that the Lord wants to expel from my life? Materialism? Sexual sin? Laziness? Inward focus? Lack of commitment to the body of Christ? Lack of evangelism? Hatred? Bitterness? Anything else? And let's not miss something highly obvious: Jesus is awesome. His deeds are awesome. Let's keep our focus on him, and we will be purified as we do so (1 John 3:2-3)!
Hebrews 7:23-28Jesus is the way, the truth, the life. We can only get to God through Him. There is no other way to God no matter what anyone else in the world says. Andrew and Edwin discuss who has hope and salvation--only those who draw near to God through Jesus.Read the written devo that goes along with this episode by clicking here. Hebrews 7:20-28Jesus is not only a great high priest. He is the greatest. Better than Aaron and any of his sons. One reason is death did not prevent Jesus from continuing to intercede for us. Because of His resurrection and ascension, He continues to intercede for us in heaven at the right hand of God.Read the written devo that goes along with this episode by clicking here. Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 20, verses 17-28Jesus is walking on the road to Jerusalem with his best friends...and he has two lessons for them: 1) Suffering is a reality in this world, but it is not the end and 2) The way of the world looks like domination and authority while the way of God looks like servitude. None of this is sexy, which is why the road is narrow that leads to the Kingdom of God...Sorry for the late drop. Will explain why on tomorrow's pod!Original Score written and performed by Bridget Zenk
Wednesday of the Second Week of LentMt 20:17-28Jesus said in reply,“You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”They said to him, “We can.”He replied,“My chalice you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to givebut is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

Mk 1:21-28Jesus came to Capernaum with his followers, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
