“What is truth?” Pontius Pilate's infamous question to Jesus resonates deeply in our "post-truth" era, where facts are contested, and reality feels fragmented. This thought-provoking sermon explores the crisis of truth in our world, juxtaposing Pilate's encounter with Jesus—Truth incarnate—against modern challenges of misinformation, ideological division, and the erosion of shared reality. Consider how Jesus' unwavering embodiment of truth and love offers a transformative path forward. In a world of competing narratives, the message is clear: truth isn't a weapon of power but a call to justice, humility, and unity under Christ's reign. The Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King#episcopal #episcopalchurch #episcopalian #church #jesusmovement #wayoflove #christian #anglican #allarewelcome #christianity #prayer #jesus #iglesiaepiscopal   #theology #anglicanchurch #holyspririt #faith #stmarksnewcanaaan #ens #ecct #spirituality #bible #scriptures #joy #peace #grace #hope

A sermon for The Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King, November 24, 2024. John 18:33-37 Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”

Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King Old Testament: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 9As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. 10A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.13As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. 14To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed. Psalm: Psalm 93 1 The Lord is King;    he has put on splendid apparel; *        the Lord has put on his apparel        and girded himself with strength. 2 He has made the whole world so sure *        that it cannot be moved; 3 Ever since the world began, your throne has been established; *        you are from everlasting. 4 The waters have lifted up, O Lord,    the waters have lifted up their voice; *        the waters have lifted up their pounding waves. 5 Mightier than the sound of many waters,    mightier than the breakers of the sea, *        mightier is the Lord who dwells on high. 6 Your testimonies are very sure, *        and holiness adorns your house, O Lord,        for ever and for evermore. Epistle: Revelation 1:4b-8 4Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. 8“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. Gospel: John 18:33-37 33Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” 35Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” 36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” 37Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”

Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King Old Testament: Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24 11For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. 12As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. Psalm: Psalm 100 1 Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; *        serve the Lord with gladness        and come before his presence with a song. 2 Know this: The Lord himself is God; *        he himself has made us, and we are his;        we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. 3 Enter his gates with thanksgiving;   go into his courts with praise; *        give thanks to him and call upon his Name. 4 For the Lord is good;   his mercy is everlasting; *        and his faithfulness endures from age to age. Old Testament: Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24 11For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. 12As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. Epistle: Ephesians 1:15-23 15I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46 31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.' 37Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' 40And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.' 41Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?'45Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' 46And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

The Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King. Guest preacher: The Reverend Richard T. Williams, Pivot MinistriesAs followers of Jesus, there's a certain spiritual dress code we're called to follow. The apostle Paul teaches us what parts of our old selves we let go of in baptism and what new parts we take on. As life's challenges present themselves, however,  are we unable to put away some of the old garments or are we ready to fully dress the part?

Summary: On the day of Pentecost Christ bumbling disciples became those who turned the world up-side down. Today, there is a people that God has raised up that once again will turn the World up-side down and bring the gospel of the living Word of God to the earth. Show Notes: Before the day of Pentecost, Christ disciples were moving as mere humans, but after Pentecost they became those doing the exploits, signs and wonders as they turned the World upside down. Today God has a people He has raised up to speak His Word in the Earth and bring forth His Kingdom. God is doing a deep work in the spirit's of His people. You must know who you are and know that the Word you speak is a Word from God. God is doing a quick work in the earth today. Now we are in the age of Spirit. You can walk in His Word as you open your heart to it today. God is unconditionally faithful to His own Word. We have become those with a heritage of all the promises of God resting on us. Quotes: We're speaking the gospel of the living Word of God into the earth. He's doing a deep deep work. Because he's not worried about the fruit as much as he was worrying about the work He's doing in a people's spirits, because he knows the fruit is gonna come. This is eternal. You have to believe that the word that you speak is the word of God. You have to believe in your relationship with the Lord. And you stand on that. His Word, you can hear it in the morning and you can walk in it as soon as you receive it into your heart, into your spirit and it becomes a part of you. Just how much do you believe God? How much do you believe His Word? God is gonna get out of me the worshiper that he created at the beginning. He's gonna get out of me that son that he wanted, he's gonna get out of me His word being returned back to Him. That's what He wants. We're a generation that lives with a heritage of I Am, with a strong knowledge of I Am right now. And we also live with the promises of I Am. What's in your heart? Unconditional...

Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King The Collect: Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament: Jeremiah 23:1-6 1Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. 2Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. 3Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. 5The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.” Psalm: Canticle 16 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; *        he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *        born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, *        from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers *        and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, *        to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, *        holy and righteous in his sight        all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, *        for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give people knowledge of salvation *        by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God *        the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *        and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *        as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Epistle: Colossians 1:11-20 11May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. Gospel: Luke 23:33-43 33When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.34Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!”36The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine,37and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” 39One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” 40But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
