Today we’re on the line with sound designer and winner of the 2020 Robert E. Cohen Sound Achievement award, Jeff Sherwood. Jeff is finishing his final semester of the MFA Theatre Sound Design program at Purdue University where he studies under his mentor Richard K. Thomas. He is an emerging theatre artist specializing in sound design, music composition, and audio engineering. He strives to bring original and innovative ideas in collaboration with creative teams in the art of storytelling. Prior to his graduate studies, Jeff spent several years in New York City working at Off-Broadway theatres including The Public Theater, The New Group, Signature Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, Roundabout Theatre Company, and others. Jeff is starting his second season as Audio Supervisor at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut. As a Purdue University Graduate Assistant, Jeff enjoys mentoring and fueling the passion of the rising generation of sound artists and engineers. He teaches the Introduction to Sound Design and Introduction to Sound Recording Studios classes in addition to managing the Pao Hall Audio Production Recording Studio. Recent credits include: Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley (Sound Design & Incidental Music), She Kills Monsters (Composer), By the Way, Meet Vera Stark (Sound Designer), The Beaux’ Stratagem (Composer). He has worked in virtually all areas of audio production and sound recording, including: radio, location sound, recording studios, sound reinforcement, film sound design, and television. His experience on stage and behind the scenes in theater and television has contributed to James becoming a skilled director and acting coach. With a strong background as a both a performer and voice actor, James is one of those rare individuals who truly understands what “works” on both sides of the microphone and camera. He is also an expert music editor and author of several books, among them: Get Your Act Together - Producing An Effective Magic Act To Music!; The Art Of VoiceActing - The Craft And Business of Performing For Voiceover; and The Voice Actor’s Guide to Professional Home Recording (Ebook). For 25 years, James was a Director and Audio Supervisor for the NBC television station in San Diego, and was responsible for the sound design of major projects for the station, as well as audio production for their on-air promotion. James also teaches a variety of workshops on voice acting for radio commercials and corporate narration projects, and as professional speakers and performance coaches teaching voice and acting techniques for effective business communication. In today’s episode we are joined in studio by Catherine Robinson, Audio Supervisor at BBC Wales. Catherine has worked in radio sound for the BBC since 2001. Her specialism is sound design for radio drama, binaural audio and 3D sound for 360 video and VR. Catherine created the sound design and binaural mix for Ring, a horror radio drama for Radio 4. Following the success of that, Catherine has set up the first operational 3D sound studio in the BBC outside Research and Development, using their tools. Some of the binaural productions that have been created in the 3D studio are: The Russell T Davies adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was the first ever binaural feature film; six 360 films for Planet Earth 2 using dynamic binaural sound design; and an episode of Doctor Who called 'Knock Knock' which is the first binaural TV drama to be made available on BBC iPlayer. Catherine discusses her role at the BBC, the first binaural episode of a TV program available on the BBC iPlayer - Doctor Who, how content will drive immersive audio consumption and bringing immersive audio to the masses.
