On this Good Friday, we explore a major contradiction in today's culture: growing openness to spirituality—from tarot to Buddhism—while Christianity is increasingly viewed as repressive or outdated. With references to Tara Isabella Burton's Strange Rites, Tom Holland's historical insights, and classic Christian apologetics, Cameron and Nathan unpack why this religiously remixed culture prefers personal preference over theological truth. We also touch on Matt Dillahunty's secular morality, the idea of “it works until it doesn't,” and how Western values are deeply shaped by a Christian conscience—even when people reject Christ. This episode is for Christians seeking thoughtful engagement with the culture, and for those wrestling with faith and reason in an age of consumer religion and moral confusion.DONATE LINK: https://toltogether.com/donate BOOK A SPEAKER: https://toltogether.com/book-a-speakerJOIN TOL CONNECT: https://toltogether.com/tol-connect TOL Connect is an online forum where TOL listeners can continue the conversation begun on the podcast.Subscribe for more deep theological discussion, Christian worldview content, and cultural commentary rooted in biblical truth.

The killer doll that launched a franchise continues to haunt our collective nightmares. Child's Play (1988) introduced us to Chucky, a seemingly innocent "Good Guy" doll harboring the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray. When young Andy Barclay receives the doll as a birthday present, his excitement quickly turns to terror as Chucky reveals his true nature.Director Tom Holland masterfully builds tension through a gradual unveiling of Chucky's sinister capabilities. The film plays on primal fears about childhood objects coming to life, particularly resonant during the 1980s toy crazes. What makes Child's Play particularly effective is its commitment to practical effects—it took twelve people to operate the Chucky puppet, with three dedicated just to facial movements. The doll's transition from innocent plaything to scarred, burnt antagonist visually mirrors his increasingly unmasked malevolence. The movie features several unforgettable moments that have cemented Chucky in horror history: the chilling battery reveal when Andy's mother discovers Chucky has been functioning without power; the iconic "This is the end, friend" incantation; and Chucky's profanity-laden outburst when he finally drops his innocent act. These scenes blend genuine scares with dark humor, establishing the tonal balance that would define the franchise.Beyond its immediate impact, Child's Play sparked a cultural phenomenon that spans decades. With its 74% Rotten Tomatoes rating, the original film stands as more than just another 80s horror—it's the birth of an icon that refuses to die, even after being burned, dismembered, and decapitated. Whether you're revisiting this classic or experiencing Chucky's reign of terror for the first time, prepare yourself for a horror experience that understands the terror lurking in seemingly innocent places.Ready to dive deeper into horror classics? Subscribe to our podcast for weekly discussions about the films that continue to define the genre. Remember, as Chucky would say: "We're friends to the end!" A note to our listeners: We are taking a little break from the podcast due to some current hardships in our family. We should be back by June 2025, and we will keep you updated on our Instagram (@significantlovers). Now on to the show... The year was 2016. A relatively unknown British actor named Tom Holland had just recently been cast (the year prior) as the newest Spider-Man. He made his first appearance in the film Captain America: Civil War, and his solo trilogy as the famous web-slinger had been officially green-lit. The world was abuzz with speculation as to who would play Tom's on-screen love interest, MJ. Enter Zendaya Coleman (or just Zendaya, as she liked to be called), a Disney Channels star with a promising career in Hollywood ahead of her. Especially once she landed her first feature film role in the upcoming Spider-Man movie. From then on Tom and Zendaya were known to the public as co-stars. And then friends. And then someone more?…In this episode, we dive into the fascinating relationship between Tom Holland and Zendaya. From their iconic on-screen chemistry in Spider-Man to their real-life bond, we explore how their friendship eventually blossomed into the romantic relationship that everyone knows and loves today. But don't you worry, their relationship may not have been as perfect as you may think. Ever heard of Jacob Elordi? Send us a textIn time where every person on the internet has access to AI on any platform or interface, the Gents take the time to reflect on the generative images people are creating through inspiration of Studio Ghibli animation (1:15). Where it is all good fun, they stress the message that founder of the studio Hayao Miyazaki warned potential artists that this will destroy the foundations of making art. In recent events, there has been an over surplus of nerd news, which is perfect timing for the Gents to deliver the nerdcore show for April. EstoBro evaluated the latest from Nintendo from their Direct showcase they had a week ago (15:40), as TV opens up questions on what will take place for their Switch 2 announcements this week. There was even additional news on how Nintendo will deliver news to their fans, even with the nonchalant announcement for targeted release date for the Super Mario Bros. movie sequel and a live action Legend of Zelda film. With multiple media outlets to deliver video game news, it is with great pleasure that the EstoBro TV Podcast announces the return of GameInformer magazine (28:05). After a brief hiatus from last year, the major video game news outlet is set to make it's return to delivering quality video game news for gamers. The Gents are more than thrilled to see what is to come from GameInformer as a whole, and the endless possibilities it has to deliver quality video game headlines. Pivoting to the latest in the MCU news, the Gents recap the insanity of the cast teasing of Avengers: Doomsday (37:05). The pair debate over past Marvel alumni that were not featured in the series of clips, but they do hold out optimism on what is to come after releases of titles that set to release this year. They also comment on the reveal of Spider-Man films with release dates set for Tom Holland to return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the final installment of the Spider-Verse trilogy. Transitioning from the focus on Marvel, the Gents are truly excited about season two of Marvel Rivals rolling out this month (55:30). They break down the reveals of Blade, Ultron, and Emma Frost as the potential characters that will be playable in the multiplayer hero shooter game. A hefty nerdcore episode indeed, courtesy of the EstoBro TV Podcast. Theme song made by iamRavedadInteract with the Gents of the podcast on the following social media platforms:X (Formally known as Twitter) YouTube InstagramBlog/websiteJoin the Discord serverSubscribe to the official playlist of the podcast

Belated sequels to monumental, genre-defining classics always walk on a knife edge! They can be a worthwhile elaboration upon the original, recontextualised for a new era, or they can be cynical cashgrabs forever consigned as a footnote to cinema history. Australian director Richard Franklin's Psycho II (1983) benefits from returning cast members Vera Miles and, of course, Anthony Perkins, a twisty turny psychological mystery script from Fright Night's Tom Holland, a disturbing score from Jerry Goldsmith and cinematography from John Carpenter regular Dean Cundey. Production for the next installment in the Spider-Man franchise is ramping up, and it appears Tom Holland will be joined by a new co-star. Multiple sources confirm that Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is set to join the upcoming Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios project, though details surrounding her role remain under wraps.Marvel and Sony have yet to comment on the casting, but Sink's addition marks a significant shift in the franchise's evolving cast. Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker's world was reset, setting the stage for fresh faces to enter the mix while familiar characters may take a step back. With Sink's signature red hair and growing reputation in Hollywood, fans have begun speculating about which character she could be portraying. The most prominent theory is that she will debut as Jean Grey, marking the beginning of the X-Men's integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, other Spider-Man characters, such as Mary Jane Watson or Felicia Hardy (Black Cat), remain possibilities.Whoever she plays, the role is expected to be significant, with insiders indicating that Sink's involvement will be pivotal in shaping the future of the franchise. With the trilogy's original arc concluding in No Way Home, the next Spider-Man movie is set to explore new territory. Holland's Peter Parker now exists in a world where no one remembers him, allowing for a fresh start in storytelling. This shift also means an opportunity to introduce new allies—and adversaries—into his life. The film will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, with Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige producing.Sink has been in high demand following her breakout performance in Stranger Things, and her career shows no signs of slowing down. She recently wrapped filming on the Netflix series' final season, which is set to premiere in 2025. Before stepping onto the Spider-Man set, she will appear in the Broadway production John Proctor Is the Villain (opening April 4) and in the upcoming Searchlight musical O'Dessa, which debuted to strong reviews at SXSW and is set for a Hulu release next week.As for Holland, he is currently filming Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic The Odyssey and is expected to begin work on Spider-Man once that wraps. With production set to begin later this year, Sink's casting adds another layer of intrigue to an already highly anticipated film. Whether she's playing an X-Men mutant, a Spider-Man love interest, or a completely new character, her involvement signals a major moment for both the MCU and her own rising career.Who Is Sink Playing? How Christianity Remade the WorldIn the context of the pagan classical world, the Christian faith was a shocking, even unfathomable inversion of the values systems and structures of the time. In that embattled context, its explosive growth was unimaginable. Today, however, Christianity is often considered boring or backwards. How might we better discern and understand the radicalism of Christianity's origins, its impact through the centuries, and its enduring formational power? Historian Tom Holland's landmark book Dominion: How the Christian Revolution Remade the World, calls attention to these puzzles and paradoxes:”Dominion was written as an attempt to stress test my hunch that Christianity really had been the most seismic and revolutionary development, not just really in the history of the West, but probably globally. And  I'm relieved to say that I was satisfied that it had been what I was setting out to show that it had been.” - Tom HollandWe trust this conversation will fire your imagination anew, and help you see with new eyes how the inverted values and priorities of God's kingdom continue to disrupt the patterns of the world, and shape our cultural assumptions. This podcast is an edited version of our Online Conversation recorded in February, 2025. Following the bloody assassination of the twenty-eight year old Emperor Caligula, Rome found herself without a leader. Who then should fill the enormous power vacuum left by the death of an emperor? Should Rome return to a Republic? Then, one overlooked candidate - a scion of the hallowed family of Augustus long lurking in the wings of imperial power - unexpectedly rose to the fore: Claudius, Caligula's uncle. Famed as a drooling idiot all his life, Claudius' apparent shortcomings had kept him safe from the ruthless ambitions of his family and enemies. But his life of anonymity would now be brought to an abrupt end, with a shocking coup led by the Praetorian Guard. The Praetorians, one of the most potent forces in Rome, feared the loss of the emperor's patronage, and so pulled him out from the curtain behind which he had been hiding, carried him to their camp, and declared him emperor. The reign that ensued - described in gory, glistening, salacious detail by the Roman historian Suetonius - would see Claudius dismantle his mask of imbecility to reveal himself clever and studious, but easily duped by his advisors, freemen, and wives alike. It would see him claim the conquest of Britain, increase the strength of the Roman army, fall foul of the senate, play cuckold in one of the most famous sexual scandals of all time, and marry his niece. All the while, the shadows of Nero's rise to supreme power were lengthening… Join Tom and Dominic for the mighty conclusion of their journey through the lives of Rome's first Caesars, as described in rich, technicolour by Suetonius, climaxing with the epic reign of Rome's most unexpected emperor: Claudius. "Enough of the Princeps, what remains to be described, is the monster..." The Roman emperor Caligula endures as one of the most notorious figures in not only Roman history, but the history of the world. Famed as a byword for sexual degeneracy, cruelty and corruption, the account of his life written by the Roman historian Suetonius has, above all, enshrined him as such for posterity. Throughout the biography there is a whiff of dark comedy, as Caligula is cast as the ultimate demented caesar, corrupted absolutely by his absolute power and driven into depravity. Born of a sacred and illustrious bloodline to adored parents, his early life - initially so full of promise - was shadowed by tragedy, death, and danger, the members of his family picked off one by one by the emperor Tiberius. Nevertheless, Caligula succeeded, through his own cynical intelligence and cunning manipulation of public spectacle, to launch himself from the status of despised orphan, to that of master of Rome. Yet, before long his seemingly propitious reign, was spiralling into a nightmare of debauchery and terror…. Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss the most notorious emperor in Rome: Caligula, a man said to have slept with his sister, transformed his palace into a brothel, cruelly humiliated senators, and even made his horse into a consul. But what is the truth behind these horrific legends? Was Caligula really more monster than man...?  Pre-order Tom Holland's new translation of 'The Lives of the Caesars' here:  https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/279727/the-lives-of-the-caesars-by-suetonius/9780241186893 _______ Twitter: @TheRestHistory @holland_tom @dcsandbrook Producer: Theo Young-Smith Assistant Producer: Tabby Syrett + Aaliyah Akude Video Editor: Jack Meek Executive Producers: Jack Davenport + Tony Pastor Learn more about your ad choices. The Roman historian Suetonius' biography of the controversial Emperor Tiberius is one of his most shocking and salacious, condemning Tiberius to infamy. But was Tiberius really the perverted monster Suetonius would have us believe? Born of Rome's most illustrious family and a sacred bloodline - the Claudians - Tiberius' mother Livia was unceremoniously taken from his father while she carried him, to marry the great Emperor Augustus. So it was that Tiberius grew up in the very heart of imperial power, proving himself intelligent, and a superb military commander. But, following the unforeseen deaths of Augustus' young heirs, he found himself primed to become the next caesar of Rome. The reign that ensued would prove largely peaceful, prosperous and stable, though Tiberius himself was increasingly plagued by paranoia and fear. While the last of Augustus' bloodline were wiped out one by one, he retired to Capri, much to the horror of the Roman people. Before long, rumours had begun percolating of the heinous deeds, sick proclivities, and vile abominations Tiberius was practicing on his pleasure island… Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss Tiberius, the impressive though widely lambasted second emperor of Rome. The Roman historian Suetonius' The Lives of the Caesars, written during the early imperial period of the Roman Empire, is a seminal biography covering the biographies of the early emperors of Rome, during two spectacular centuries of Roman history. Delving deep into the personal lives of the caesars and sparing no detail, no matter how prurient, pungent, explicit or salacious, it vividly captures Rome at the peak of her power, and those colourful individuals at the heart of everything. It is an unsettling yet fascinating portrait of the alien and the intimate, that sees some of history's most famous characters revealed as almost modern men, plotting a delicate line between private and public, respectability and suspicion.
