The UK is one of the world's largest consumers of ultra-processed foods, so Wahaca restaurants founder Thomasina Miers thinks the government should cut the taxes of businesses that serve healthy alternatives. In fact, she challenges the idea that ultra‑processed products should be called ‘food' at all. Irish author Marian Keyes has sold over 30 million copies of her books worldwide over the past three decades. From her 1995 debut Watermelon to Rachel's Holiday and last year's 'menopause romance' My Favourite Mistake, she's championed telling ordinary women's stories in all their glory, with plenty of humour thrown in. Now some of her most-loved books and characters have been adapted into a TV series called The Walsh Sisters which has just debuted on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Marian and the show's co-creator Stefanie Preissner talk to presenter Nuala McGovern about bringing Rachel and her sisters to life on screen. Student midwives have contacted us to say many of them are struggling to find jobs despite a serious shortage of midwives in the NHS. A new survey from the Royal College of Midwives echoes that finding. It says 31% of those newly qualified midwifes are still not employed in the role and the majority of those who have found employment are on fixed term contracts. This comes a year after the government announced it's Graduate Guarantee pledging that every newly qualified nurse and midwife in England would have the opportunity to apply to join the NHS workforce. We hear from Safia, who is in her final year of midwifery training, and Gill Walton, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives. Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt is at the forefront of the campaign to ban social media for under-16s and end what he calls “phone-based childhoods”. His book, The Anxious Generation, sparked a global reckoning that has led countries like Australia and Spain to introduce laws restricting access to social media platforms. He spoke to Amol ahead of a meeting with UK health secretary Wes Streeting about why he thinks we're at a tipping point, whether technology is making us “stupider” and how parents can reduce their child's smartphone use by organising local “play-bourhoods”. As the government prepares to introduce a strategy to boost fostering in England, Amol speaks to foster carer and author Louise Allen about the crisis in the system and what it will take to fix it. At the end of March 2024 there were 83,630 children in care in England, of whom 56,390 were being fostered, but there is a shortfall of around 6,000 foster carers nationwide. We all collectively say “there should have been another way!” as we dissect this and try to figure out what went wrong and why.   Join us as we let out a collective sigh at what is easily one of the worst Season openers that we've had so far in our odyssey through the show. We finish one year and start the next with an ode to good food.  Emilia Fox is an English actress and presenter. She is best known for playing Dr Nikki Alexander in the popular long-running TV series Silent Witness, a role she has been playing since 2004, when Nick was still at university and Angela was on TV with Gordon Ramsay in Hell's Kitchen. Emilia is with us to chat about the upcoming series of the show (its 29th!!) which lands on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in early 2026. Starring Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave and Colin McFarlane, the series features UNIT in their attempt to prevent a global war caused by the return of the Sea Devils, now called "Homo Aqua". The War Between the Land and the Sea was filmed from August to December 2024. It consists of five episodes and premiered on BBC One on 7 December 2025, and is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2026. Colin McFarlane reprises his role as General Austin Pierce, a character first introduced and last seen fifteen years prior in the third series of Torchwood, another Doctor Who spin-off.[13] Adrian Lukis, Patrick Baladi, Vincent Franklin, Francesca Corney and Mei Mac were announced as additional cast members in October 2024.[14] Writing The five-part series was written by Davies and Pete McTighe.[15] Davies is the current showrunner of Doctor Who while McTighe also previously wrote for the parent series.[16] The two split writing duties across the programme, with Davies writing the premiere and finale episodes, McTighe writing the second and third episodes, and the two co-writing episode four together.[5] The first read-through for all five episodes occurred on 19 August 2024.[10] The series sees the return of the Sea Devils.[1] Filming Some filming took place internationally, including on Mallorca.[17] All episodes were produced in one block, compared to the two to three blocks that would usually be used for five episodes.[5] Location shooting began on 29 August 2024 in Barry and Atlantic Wharf, both in south Wales. Filming continued into September in various locations across Wales, including at the Welsh Government Building, City Arms pub, Hodge House, and Merthyr Mawr. In October, the series was spotted filming at Cardiff City Hall and National Museum Cardiff. Power remarked that this was the case for The War Between the Land and the Sea and awarded 2 out of 5 stars.[22] Writing for The Guardian, Lucy Mangan gave 3 out of 5, feeling that the spin-off was "an opportunity wasted", comparing it in an inferior light to Russell T Davies' previous show, Years and Years.[23] Several outlets praised the performance of returning actress Jemma Redgrave, including Radio Times, SciFi Pulse and The London Standard.[24][25][26] Isobel Lewis, writing for The i Paper, compared the show to Torchwood, highlighting the use of profanity. Lewis praised Davies' "willingness" to "not simply feed fans the same stories over and over", noting how the finales featuring Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor often "struggled to stick the landing".[27]
