If you're a parent, you know – there is nothing more precious to you than your child. You would do anything for them, to keep them healthy, and happy, and safe. But sometimes, even the best parents with the best of intentions can have a brief lack of focus, and the results can be devastating. The subject we're talking about today is hot car deaths. Outside of crashes, heatstroke is the leading cause of death in vehicles for children 14 and under. It happened 36 times in 2022, and so far in 2023 the total stands at 26. And that's just in the US. For more than half of these, the person responsible unknowingly left the child in the vehicle. This is something that happens to loving, caring and protective parents. As you hear Laura talk about what happened, you'll hear the pain in her voice. It's a heartache that will never go away. But before this conversation is over, you'll hear something else: determination. Because Laura is on a mission to make sure that what happened to her doesn't happen to other parents. Having a husband who developed a severe disability led Laura Story to say, "Farewell, predictable." The unexpected trial was a free fall into faith. On today's edition of Family Talk, the Christian singer/songwriter shares that she identifies with many biblical characters who experienced a disruption in their lives. Our guest today is Laura Musgrave. Laura was named one of 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics™ for 2022. Laura is a digital anthropology and user experience (UX) researcher.  Her research specialism is artificial intelligence, particularly data and privacy.Laura gave a short talk at the inaugural conference in 2019 on privacy and convenience in the use of AI smart speakers. And at the 2021 event Laura chaired the panel, Data: Privacy and Responsibility. We start our conversation by exploring Laura's interest in data and privacy, and smart assistants in particular. During her research on smart speaker use in homes, she's noticed a shift in people's attitudes and a growing public awareness around privacy and technology, and the use of AI. This shift, she feels, has been aided by documentaries like The Social Dilemma (despite well-founded criticisms such as this article by Ivana Bartoletti in the Huffington Post) and Coded Bias. Laura talks about where the responsibility of privacy lies — with the technology companies, with the users, with the regulators — and that as a user researcher, she has a part to play in helping people understand what's happening with their data.I ask Laura what drew her to anthropology and how she thinks the research methods and lens of anthropology can be used to design responsible AI. She says, "The user researchers that really stood out to me very early on in my career were the anthropologists and ethnographers"  because "the way that they looked at things…really showed a deep understanding of human behaviour". It "set the bar" for her, she explains, and she wanted to know: “How do I do what they do”.Laura shares the book she'd recommend to user researchers, like her, who are starting out on their ethnographic journey, a book which helped her “make sense of how ethnography fitted into my everyday work “.Because Laura's been named one of the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics™ for 2022, I ask her to share what the AI ethics landscape, with respect to data and privacy, looks like for 2022. As she explains, “in some senses it is much the same as last year but it's also a constantly developing space and there are constantly new initiatives” before sharing some of the key themes she thinks we are likely to see in 2022.Lastly, Laura recommends two books, both published by Meatspace Press: Fake AI, and Data Justice and Covid-19: Global Perspectives. (The former we picked for our 2021 Recommended Reads and the latter for our 2020 Recommended Reads.)You can connect with Laura on LinkedIn and on Twitter @lmusgrave. How do you teach a three year old about money? What about a newly adopted pre-teen? Stephanie Pyke from MoneyLit talks with Laura Coleman on The Adoption and Fertility Finance Show about how to teach children about human capital. Stephanie separates jobs into “household jobs we do because we all live here” and “extra jobs”. In her house, the “extra jobs” are an opportunity for children to earn their own money. It's so hard to get a pret-teen or teen to listen, even when you have fabulous knowledge to teach! Stephanie exposes her kids to books so that they can learn from her in a roundabout way, and she recommends a few great books for teens.  Laura and Stephanie talk about how to change the money habits of older children, and how to use short and long term goals to teach about delaying gratification.  Using a physical savings account is more impactful when children are between 3-5 years old, and by about 6-7, they should go out and get a savings account. Stephanie recommends using a mobile app to help them see their savings grow, and they talk about teaching kids about the physical money behind a debit card. Stephanie's been using the app Stockpile to teach her kids about investing in stocks. She's designed her summer program for grades 3-8 to teach children about financial literacy and basic economic concepts. It's taught locally in Chattanooga, TN, but you can follow her on Facebook for more resources on how to teach kids about money. Balancing Your Retirement With Your Needs Of Today

Should you invest while paying for adoption? Should you borrow from retirement? Laura Coleman talks with Michelle Waymire from The Young & Scrappy on The Adoption and Fertility Finance Show today about how to balance retirement planning with the needs of today.  First and foremost, if your company offers a match for retirement savings, don't leave money on the table! Don't walk away from the opportunity to invest on someone else's dime. Once you're in the habit of not investing, it's hard to get back into the habit of saving for your future. So rather than stopping retirement savings, it may make more sense for you to throttle back while you're saving for adoption. But don't stop completely! The absolute best places to put your adoption goal money really depends on the goal and timeline you're working with. Is it 6 months, 2 years, or even 5 years? If it's really short term, it can feel like you're leaving money on the table by not having it invested, and the last thing you want to do is lose money. A high yield savings account (HYSA) or a CD is a great choice for those shorter goals. If you have 3 or more years in your savings timeline, then a taxable or brokerage account would be a better choice. Charles Schwab or Vanguard have target date funds that help you plan for goals around a certain date. You could even try Betterment, a robo-advisor. Laura and Michelle talk about some of the benefits of using these brokerages as a savings tool.   Michelle and Laura share ideas about how to use money dates to realign priorities and goals with your partner. Whether you choose quarterly or annual money dates, remember to keep checking in with each other regularly to be sure that your finances are aligned with your values.  If you loved this podcast, please subscribe and follow us for more conversations about the intersection of adoption, fertility, and finances.      In the last episode, we looked at the story of Jane and Laura.  Jane had recently experienced a religious conversion and had joined a Christian group.  Because Laura did not share her specific beliefs, Jane rejected their lifelong friendship. Before we can learn how Jane has gone wrong in her understanding of community love,  we must first define what it is.  I offer my suggested definition of community love and unpack its meaning.       Two of the key values upon which community love focuses are forgiveness and reconciliation.  Jane's behavior does not reflect these values.  Instead, Janes seems to show anger and even desperation more than anything.  Many people believe that forgiveness and reconciliation sre the same, but they are actually quite different.  In the next episode we will explore forgiveness and reconciliation and how Jane has missed understanding them.
