Want to make your savings work harder for you without lifting a finger? In this episode, we're taking it back to basics and discussing High-Yield Savings Accounts (HYSAs)—what they are, why they matter, and how they can help you grow your emergency fund and sinking funds faster than a traditional savings account. If your money is sitting in a regular savings account earning pennies, it's time to upgrade! I'll cover why HYSAs are a game-changer for savings, how to use them strategically for financial goals, and the difference between an emergency fund (for life's unexpected hits) and sinking funds (for planned expenses like car repairs and vacations). Plus, you'll get motivated to open your HYSA today so you can start earning higher interest ASAP. Don't let your hard-earned cash sit idle—tune in and take action! In this episode of Money on My Mind, I answer Bowen Bergenfield's question: “Should you invest or use a high-yield savings account (HYSA) for a big purchase?” I break down the decision using S&P 500 historical data, explain the 5-year rule for saving vs. investing, and share my experiences to help you make the best financial choice.   This episode is all about using index funds for short-term goals, and why it's usually better to stick with high-yield savings accounts (HYSAs) if you're planning for anything less than 5 years out. We're diving into the data to help you make the most of your savings and minimize risk when you're saving up for something big.   Key Talking Points of the Episode   00:00 Introduction 01:17 The 5-year rule: Why 5 years is the tipping point for saving vs. investing 02:18 S&P 500 historical risk and return from 1926 to 2024 04:18 The risk of having 1 in 4 chances of losing money in a one-year period 05:59 Why it makes sense to invest long-term 07:16 What you can use your HYSA for 08:02 When to consider alternatives like CDs for short-term goals   Quotables   “For any goal under five years, I always use a high-yield savings account—no question.”   “If you need the money in the next few years, don't gamble it. Did you notice your HYSA interest rate has come down since then? We did prepare you for that, so if you're not able to stay updated on everything going on in the markets and with The Federal Reserve, you might want to subscribe to the podcast.

High-yield savings accounts (HYSAs) are creating buzz in the business world, and for good reason! In this episode, Danielle Hayden, CPA and founder of Kickstart Accounting, Inc., dives into how high-yield savings accounts can help business owners make the most of their cash reserves. With action steps you can take today, Danielle lays out how to use HYSAs as a smart, low-risk tool for growing your money while still keeping it accessible. Have your money work for you as it sits in savings!  Key Takeaways:  What is a High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA): Danielle explains how HYSAs differ from traditional accounts and why they're a smart choice for short-term savings, earning you hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars in interest with minimal effort. Key Considerations When Choosing an HYSA: Transfer times: How long it takes to move funds back to your checking account. Transaction limits: Planning around monthly withdrawal caps to avoid penalties. FDIC insurance: Ensuring your money is protected. Common Pitfalls to Avoid:  Why your account name matters for proper accounting and legal compliance. The difference between business and personal savings and how to ensure you're staying tax-compliant. Action Steps: Open a high-yield savings account for your business if you haven't already. Ensure your account is in the correct name (business or personal) based on your savings purpose. Review your current cash savings strategy and evaluate your options to choose an HYSA that aligns with your financial goals. Topics Discussed: What is a High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA)? We recorded this on 08/01/2024, knowing that unemployment numbers will not drop until this podcast airs on 08/02/2024, and that might also change so keep that in mind. **Employment Report Update from Jess** Fed's View on Labor Market: Fed Chair Jerome Powell stated that the changes in the labor market are "broadly consistent with a normalization process." However, policymakers are closely watching for signs of deeper issues. Unemployment Report Highlights: Unemployment Rate: Jumped to 4.3% in July, the highest in nearly three years. Hiring Slowdown: Significant reduction in hiring activities. Concerns: Increased fears of a weakening labor market and potential recession. Trend: This is the fourth consecutive monthly increase in unemployment, rising from a five-decade low of 3.4% in April 2023. Cause: The slowdown is driven by weak hiring rather than layoffs. Following the release of the employment data: U.S. Treasury yields dropped, meaning bond prices rose and we are in a sell off. Fed Meeting Notes aka The Powell-Point Fed Chairman Jerome Powell announced on the latest FOMC press conference that there will NOT be any rate cuts. We're shocked, really. Let's go through the data! It's no secret that most of us Americans are feeling the impact of higher rates to borrow money and inflation. But finally! It's not just us smaller consumers feeling the heat, larger companies are as they reported revenue declines. And if the big companies feel it, they will have to make some changes. Price Stability + Max Employment & Event Risk Something feels broken. The Fed has a toolkit to use when something is broken. Which means: rate cuts! What does it mean for you? We might see some sell-off in certain sectors. But that is normal rotation. Remember, this is not financial advice, but we have some episodes on What Is Inflation, CD Laddering, Bond ETFs, Are We In a Recession, etc., for you to understand what happens when the Yield Curve is de-inverted and what happens when rates inevitably get cut. Are you going to move your HYSA money into a Treasury, CD Ladder, or Bond Fund? Investing Rollercoaster DON'T be an emotional investor. You are buckled in for the long ride. The full rollercoaster. Time in the market is the most important and we've seen that even though the market goes up and down, the S&P 500 has continued to go up over the history of time. Also, when rates get cut, it usually trickles down to us with more competitive loan prices (auto loan, home loans, etc.) Still Have More Questions or a Comment?

I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.  Lesley Logan 0:46  Hey, Be It babe, Happy May 17th. How are you? Welcome back to The Fuck Yeah Friday episode. This is where I share wins of yours, wins of mine and an affirmation to kickstart our weekend because there are always things that are good that are happening in your life even when the (ish) has hit the fan, there's something good that's going to come from everything. So there's always balance and what we need to focus on is the good stuff because there's plenty of bad. Your friends will tell you all the bad you don't have to like focus on that. Lesley Logan 1:12  So here is a win from Jeanne Cho, she's an Agency member and her FYF. Sent out price increase emails this week, only received one negative response but handled it graciously and she's someone that makes sense to let go of. A few clients that express understanding. Today was my fifth Friday starting work in the ideal schedule at 9am after taking my daughter to school. Two clients late-cancelled so one immediately said she understand the need to charge her. The second is a new client who not only said the price increase is fine but also fine with the late cancel charge. Now that I have these two cancels I have more time in my day to recover and work on gemstones. Bumped into a sexy fling from last summer, now that I'm not interested he keeps reaching out. Love how the universe works. So many great wins in here Jeanne. So Jeanne, whenever you do a price increase it can be so, so scary. And also charging for late cance can be scary. But these are businesses that you're running, whether you're a Pilates instructor or not, anything that you are doing that you have to pay taxes on is a business, you have to treat it like one. Otherwise, it's called a hobby and then they don't let you do it anymore. So go, Jeanne. Lesley Logan 2:15  All right, this one is from Adrienne McCaskey. She's also one of our Agency members. And I got to meet her at the winter tour. So I just am so excited. She said FYF, some simple and yet monumental milestones this week, following the webinar with Tess last month, pause, Tess Waresmith was a guest on the podcast. And so, this is the Tess that she's talking about and we had her in the Agency to do a webinar. So, here we go. Adrienne's win. Following the webinar with Tess last month, I'm evaluating my financial and retirement accounts and opened an HYSA, a CD and savings accounts for my kids. Worked with my insurance agent and switched companies around based on liability policies and still getting the coverage I need while saving $600 plus annually. Finally achieved my goal of adding a blog to my website and made my first post this week and have drafts up for the next two written, nearly ready to go. Scheduled an overdue massage for late this month, made time to volunteer at my son's classroom twice this week. And it meant so much to both of us. Did two OPC workouts this week. Made the conscious decision to let go of a new-ish client that was requiring a lot of attention and sapping my energy. And the next day I received a message from someone who wants to start and fits my ideal client. Whoo, go, Adrienne, you are amazing. Those are monumental milestones. Those are so, so, so cool. I love sharing these wins. So make sure you send your wins. And so we can celebrate them. Because when you hear them, you get to really celebrate the thing that you did. It's so cool. Lesley Logan 3:33  All right. We've had a lot of things going on around here, I'm super, super excited to share that we have been able to kick off the OPC Summer Camp. That is a really big deal. I mean, we made it bigger and better than ever, 14 teachers, right? So I'm one of them. But we corralled 14 teachers and topics and we wanted to get it announced as early as possible. And so I'm just so proud of the team for all the work they've done to get this and also another win and part of it was like we've always wanted to be able to do a day pass to make something like really affordable for people. And we finally figured a way to do that and pay all of our teachers out accordingly. So it has been something we've been working on for almost a year. And so I'm just so, so proud of things, and I share it with you like it's not even complete guys. The win is just that it's announced. I will have another one in June when it is complete. But the win is that it's announced. Wins like this are really impactful because they include not just me, but so many other people and then their impact is even bigger than all of us and that is what we always focus on here. And so another way to think about you know, why you should celebrate your wins is to celebrate the small things. Because to celebrate the impact you're trying to make on this planet, every single one of us whether you work for yourself or you work for someone else, you are making an impact on people's lives and you can celebrate. You can have a win that's like I opened the door for the person behind me and they were struggling with it. That's a fucking great win because you changed that person's day. If they had to like struggle to open the door it would have like set their whole day in a different direction. So anyway, that is why we celebrate some wins. So yay to my team and everyone who has been part of Summer Camp because the fact that we got it launched in April was a humongous, humongous win. And I can't wait to see what comes from Summer Camp when it finally is live in June. Lesley Logan 5:19  So, all right now, let's get you on your day. Let's get you on your road. Let's get you kicking off your weekend with an affirmation. Which one we're going to do today? Here we go. My sensitivity is beautiful and my feelings and emotions are valid. My sensitivity is beautiful and my feelings and emotions are valid. Say it with me one more time. My sensitivity is beautiful and my feelings and emotions are valid. Remember, there's a couple Be It Action Items that are like, feel, like, feel the affirmations in your body. So, hope you felt that somewhere and wherever you felt it was awesome. And thank you so much for being part of the Be It Till You See It podcast. You are wonderful. And I will see you next week. Lesley Logan 6:00  That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. The bond market has always been relevant, but it hasn't mattered as much since the Great Financial Crisis (GFC) - that's when the housing market collapsed in 2008. When we have a financial crisis, there is a fiscal policy response and monetary policy response to stimulate the economy. Right now we are in restrictive fed territory, they have raised rates to levels not seen since the GFC. Now the big market question is: when will they lower rates? If they do it too soon, it will reignite inflation, too late, it will tip us into a recession. The Fed's action affect the front end of the curve... when they lower and raise rates. WHICH AFFECTS YOU. (and that HYSA). You need to understand the yield curve and what de-inversion would mean. Is The Fed going to tip us into a recession? What does that even mean? We've been seeing your questions around this and more after our recent episodes on the FOMC meetings. Let's revisit how the yield curve works so we can all understand how the stock market and bond market is affected by The Fed's actions and what an inverted yield curve means for your money. *This episode was recorded back in November 2023, so some things mentioned are related to that month, but overall still relevant to what's happening now.* Still Have More Questions or a Comment?

In the last episode (Ep. 30) of the Market MakeHer Podcast, we discussed how “The Fed” projects to cut interest rates 3 times by end of year. Hopefully, this means lower inflation, but it also means lower interest rates on your High Yield Savings Accounts as well. Where can we stash our cash with higher interest rates for longer? Brokerage CDs! One option is Brokerage CDs (certificate of deposit). This option is good especially if you have a very low risk tolerance and want to do something more than a HYSA that is a tad bit higher on the risk pyramid (Ep. 29), but still low-risk overall and locks in these higher yields we're currently seeing for a little bit longer. We'll teach you how to potentially lock in higher interest rates on your cash for longer with a Brokerage CD. You'll also learn how to build a CD ladder! It has been years, actually, over a decade since we changed banks for our high-yield savings account (HYSA). But this is the year, I had a bad experience. I'm actually kind of embarrassed about it, but more on that later. Long story short, we were not being valued as loyal customers and I refuse to stay with a bank that treats me unfairly. Housekeeping note: I have no affiliate or partnership relationships with any of the banks mentioned. This is just my own experience and opinion. There are no referral or affiliate links in this article. A Quick Backstory and What Happened Originally, we'd started our first high-yield savings account with a company called ING Direct. I'd spent quite a bit of time researching different banks and settled on ING Direct because they had great rates, I could easily open several accounts, nickname my accounts (this actually wasn't that common 10+ years ago), and their customer service was great. Fast forward, they were purchased by Capital One and rebranded as CapitalOne 360 Savings. Okay, no problem. Customer service was still great, rates were great (or so I thought), no worries. I was checking my accounts and renaming one for a goal we've established in conjunction with Money Day this year. I noticed my interest rate on my accounts was 0.3% - not the 4.35% that Capital One shows on the site. I called and they said I had a “legacy product” and would need to reopen my accounts in order to get the current rates. Needless to say, I was pissed! If I have to open brand new accounts, I'll be opening them with a different bank. The hunt begins. My Criteria for High-Yield Savings Accounts I am very particular about my high-yield savings accounts – up to a point. I'm very aware of my tendency to analysis paralysis. I'm a natural overthinker, but once I settle on a decision, I generally feel very confident about it. There's also a couple other reasons why I'm not too particular about some things but more particular about others. Chasing high fees or jumping on the “trendy” HYSAs can get you into trouble or end up not being quite as awesome as the marketing makes it seem. Because I tend to go overboard comparing, I have to set my criteria and not get too wrapped up in the tiny details. In reality, when I set clear criteria, there's likely only a few banks that will fit the bill. Here's the main things I look for in a high-yield savings account: 1.      Competitive Rates 2.      No Fees! 3.      Ability to Open Multiple Accounts 4.      Checking Account Available at Same Bank 5.      Quality Customer Service 6.      No Hidden Rules and “Gotchas”

On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, three Certified Financial Trainers, Mike, Kadri, & Garrett are here to gymplain interest rates. Interest rates directly affect our everyday lives, how we spend, how we save, and how we invest. Knowing how interest impacts your finances can be a powerful tool for planning ahead.  Podcast Notes According to Investopedia, “The interest rate is the amount a lender charges a borrower and is a percentage of the principal—the amount loaned.” “An interest rate can also apply to the amount earned at a bank or credit union from a savings account." Interest rates are set by the Federal Reserve. It's a lever they can pull to help guide the economy in the direction they want it to go.  In 2020, we saw interest rates lowered. Now we're seeing the pendulum swing the other way. The goal right now is to slow down inflation.  Interest rates affect the economy and our everyday lives.  There are different types of interest rates, fixed and adjustable. Knowing what kind of debt you're taking on is important.  An adjustable interest rate means it will fluctuate. With a mortgage, it will be on a schedule.  Unsecured debt, like credit cards often have adjustable interest rates. If you pay in full every month, this doesn't affect you. If you carry a balance, these rates are important.  Interest is not just for debt, it applies to savings accounts as well.  High Yield Savings Account rates have been steadily increasing over the last few months.  Recent shifts in client behavior:  Some clients who have been procrastinating have finally been opening HYSA's and taking advantage of the great interest rates.  Home renovations have slowed down, leading to less refinancing.  There has been a slowdown in folks wanting to purchase a home.  If you're not sure what your interest rate is, that information is on your credit card statement, on one of the last pages.  Congress controls the purse strings and the decisions we make as a country directly affect our money and our day-to-day lives.   At the end of the day, financial literacy is key. The most important thing you can do is look at your assets and what's available to you. Understand what products and accounts you're using and use them to accomplish your financial goals.    Meet The Trainers Meet Kadri Augustin, Level 3 Certified Financial Trainer Meet Mike Poulin, Level 2 Certified Financial Trainer Meet Garrett Faulconer, Level 2 Certified Financial Trainer

Should you invest while paying for adoption? Should you borrow from retirement? Laura Coleman talks with Michelle Waymire from The Young & Scrappy on The Adoption and Fertility Finance Show today about how to balance retirement planning with the needs of today.  First and foremost, if your company offers a match for retirement savings, don't leave money on the table! Don't walk away from the opportunity to invest on someone else's dime. Once you're in the habit of not investing, it's hard to get back into the habit of saving for your future. So rather than stopping retirement savings, it may make more sense for you to throttle back while you're saving for adoption. But don't stop completely! The absolute best places to put your adoption goal money really depends on the goal and timeline you're working with. Is it 6 months, 2 years, or even 5 years? If it's really short term, it can feel like you're leaving money on the table by not having it invested, and the last thing you want to do is lose money. A high yield savings account (HYSA) or a CD is a great choice for those shorter goals. If you have 3 or more years in your savings timeline, then a taxable or brokerage account would be a better choice. Charles Schwab or Vanguard have target date funds that help you plan for goals around a certain date. You could even try Betterment, a robo-advisor. Laura and Michelle talk about some of the benefits of using these brokerages as a savings tool.   Michelle and Laura share ideas about how to use money dates to realign priorities and goals with your partner. Whether you choose quarterly or annual money dates, remember to keep checking in with each other regularly to be sure that your finances are aligned with your values.  If you loved this podcast, please subscribe and follow us for more conversations about the intersection of adoption, fertility, and finances. Preparing financially for Adoption is a resource I wish we had available to us when we adopted! What a gift it would have been to have the structure and accountability to keep us on the same page and communicating before, during and after our adoption process. The spreadsheets provided are gold for staying organized which can relieve a lot of stress. There are also guides for date nights and talking about the $ that I find valuable even now! Money is something that is easy to let one person handle or to choose to not talk about and it's so vital to stay connected on this topic especially when you are making big life decisions for your family such as adopting. Because Laura is a Money Coach and an adoptive mom you can trust she is giving you sound and valuable information. There are so many things that are required to invest in to prepare for adoption, in my opinion this course should be one of them!" — Kelli
