“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” - Proverbs 22:6As parents, we often wonder when to begin teaching our kids about money. The simple answer? It's never too early. In fact, a study by Purdue University found that most of our lifelong money habits are formed by the age of seven. That's a sobering realization—but also a hopeful one. Because with intentionality and biblical wisdom, we can help our children become faithful stewards from an early age. Here's how to begin—step by step.Ages 3–5: Needs, Wants, and WorshipEven toddlers can begin to understand the basics of money. Start by teaching the difference between needs and wants. A home, food, and clothing? Those are needs. But that cereal with a cartoon character? That's a want—and a perfect conversation starter. As you shop, ask your child to name which items fall into which category. Then take the opportunity to remind them: God provides all our needs and blesses us with more than we deserve.Begin using the three-jar method—one for spending, one for saving, and one for giving. When your child receives birthday money or a small allowance, help them divide it equally. Let them drop their “giving” portion into the offering plate each week. It's a simple but powerful way to connect generosity with worship.Ages 6–10: Responsibility and Short-Term GoalsAt this stage, kids are ready to take on more responsibility. Assign small chores tied to a modest allowance. If they complete the job, they earn the money. If not, the allowance waits. It's a simple lesson in accountability and work ethic. If they want something beyond their current funds, help them create a short-term savings plan. Use sticker charts or visual trackers to make progress fun and tangible.Give your child a few dollars and let them plan how to spend it on snacks for the week. This is a great way to teach a foundational principle from financial teacher Ron Blue:“You always have more choices than money.”Encourage your child to give regularly to causes they care about. Ask why they want to give—and help them understand how giving reflects God's heart.Ages 11–15: Bigger Goals, Delayed GratificationNow your child may be babysitting, mowing lawns, or doing small jobs for neighbors. It's the perfect time to talk about larger savings goals—maybe a new bike or a camp trip.Consider opening a custodial savings account or using a kid-friendly money app. Walk through monthly statements together and celebrate milestones. Let them make decisions (and occasional mistakes) while you're close by to guide them.If they want to buy something online, encourage them to wait a few days, compare options, and pray before making a purchase. The lesson is clear: patience often leads to better decisions.Ages 16–18: Real-World Practice and Investing BasicsTeenagers who are working part-time jobs are ready for more advanced money management.Help them set up a formal budget with real income and categories for saving, spending, and giving. This is also a good time to introduce matching incentives: If they save $500, you match it, just like an employer's 401(k) might.Let them research a company and buy a fractional share through a custodial brokerage account. If they have earned income, consider opening a Roth IRA to model long-term investing.Remind them: Markets go up and down, but faithful stewardship builds wealth over time. The Ultimate Goal: A Faithful StewardReinforce this truth: Their worth isn't tied to their net worth. All we have is a gift from God to be managed for His glory, not our own.No matter your child's age, the goal remains the same: to raise someone who knows how to earn, manage, give, and grow what God has entrusted to them. You don't have to be a financial expert—you just have to be present and intentional.Keep the conversation going. Keep pointing them to biblical truth. And remember—this isn't just a financial lesson. It's a spiritual one.For more resources on biblical money management and to start budgeting as a family, check out the FaithFi app.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm 58, single, and plan to keep working until I'm 70. In this episode of ThimbleberryU, we continue our conversation about teaching kids financial responsibility, focusing on debt, budgeting, generosity, and investing. Jag and Amy Walls provide practical strategies for helping children understand money in an age-appropriate way.We start by tackling the sensitive topic of debt. Amy shows us her “suitcase” analogy to explain tailoring financial discussions to a child's age and capacity. Younger children benefit from relatable examples like borrowing toys or Halloween candy trades to grasp the basics of borrowing and repayment. For older kids, it's about introducing concepts like credit cards, interest, and student loans while sharing real-life stories to provide context.Next, we cover budgeting, where Amy suggests turning it into a game. She shares how activities like shopping for a food drive or handling a pretend shopping trip can teach kids about choices and trade-offs. By guiding children through small financial goals and allowing them to make mistakes in a controlled way, they learn the value of planning and accountability.Amy also emphasizes the importance of generosity. She explains how encouraging kids to give, whether through charitable donations or thoughtful gift-giving, can foster a sense of responsibility and connection. She suggests matching their contributions to amplify the impact and reinforce positive habits. When it comes to investing, Amy recommends starting with simple concepts. For example, using well-known companies like Disney or Apple can make stocks relatable. Analogies, like planting a tree to illustrate the slow growth of investments, help demystify the process. However, she stresses the importance of having a solid cash reserve before diving into investing.Jg and Amy reflect on how money conversations were often avoided in previous generations. By fostering open discussions and age-appropriate financial lessons, parents can better prepare their children for a healthy financial future. What does your family think about money? This powerful question could be the answer to to shifting your family legacy forever! Today, we're excited to bring you insights from Garrett Gunderson, a close friend and brilliant mind in the realms of wealth creation and preservation! Garrett's journey is not just about accumulating wealth; it's about investing in oneself and understanding the value of money in creating a fulfilling life. Garrett shared the transformative impact of involving his family in his entrepreneurial ventures, highlighting the importance of exposing children to the value creation process. He believes that teaching kids and even ourselves to invest in our passions and interests is crucial. This approach fosters a sense of worth and encourages personal growth beyond just financial gains. One of the most powerful takeaways from our chat was the concept of money being a tool for exchange, not a measure of our value. By shifting the conversation around money from scarcity to abundance, we can inspire our children and ourselves to see money as a byproduct of adding value to the world. Garrett's new children's book, "I Am Money," introduces these concepts in a way that's accessible and engaging for kids, encouraging them to see themselves as valuable beyond their material possessions. It's a must-read for families looking to instill healthy financial habits and a positive mindset about wealth from an early age. We love how Garrett gives families freedom in the journey and helps us all understand that utilizing money effectively is ongoing. It's about progress, not perfection. Let's continue to learn, grow, and support each other in creating a family culture that values personal growth, contribution, and meaningful success. Ready to dive deeper into these insights and learn how to foster a healthy relationship with money in your family? Hit play now and let's invest in ourselves and our families, shaping a future where money serves as a tool for fulfilling our true potential. As a parent, you naturally want your kids to become ready to face the world. You strive to raise responsible and successful individuals. One of the skills they have to learn is financial responsibility. However, schools do not have it in their curriculum. So it is your responsibility to start teaching your children about money at home. The earlier they learn financial literacy, the greater the long-term impact. Parents have their way of enforcing financial responsibility on their children, like assigning homework or chores in exchange for money. However, there is a more effective way to teach kids about money, and that's what Scott Donnell will teach you in today's episode. Was money something you learned about in school? We're not talking about math classes like geometry or pre-cal, we're talking about personal finance — the art of managing our dollars. While some of us were lucky enough to learn personal finance from our parents, an aunt or another money-savvy family member, most of us never took a single personal finance class in school before we opened our first bank account. Yanely Espinal, author of Mind Your Money, Insightful Stories and Strategies to Help You Reach Your #MoneyGoals has made it her mission to teach kids the lessons she didn't learn young, so they can make smarter decisions about money. Listen in for her number one piece of advice on teaching kids key personal finance lessons early. In Mailbag, we hear from a listener who's mentoring a teenager on how to manage her finances and is looking for next steps. We also check in with someone who's filing for divorce and wondering if now is the right time to start collecting Social Security. In our money tip of the week, the cost of ignoring your finances is steep (we're talking $2,000 a year). If you've been dragging your feet on creating a budget that works for you, join us for our next session of FinanceFixx on January 23rd. Have thoughts about the show that you're dying to share?
