In this episode, I discuss with Christopher Shaw Myers his book and uncle "Robert Shaw: An Actor's Life On The Set Of JAWS and Beyond". Just in time for the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg'sJaws, an intimate and richly-told portrait of the iconic actor and writer Robert Shaw, from his portrayal of the legendary shark hunter Captain Quint and beyond, written lovingly but honestly by his nephew. July 30th is the 79th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during World War II in 1945, and the famous shark attack on its helpless crew floating in the Pacific Ocean. Captain Quint's story about the USS Indianapolis in the movie “Jaws” is only the beginning of a gut-wrenching piece of history. There's a lot more to the Indianapolis sinking than most people know. Listen to the special Anniversary Encore!
In this first episode in a two part special edition, we look back at one of the most horrifying stories of all of World War 2, the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. This was the story made famous by a scene in the movie "JAWS" when the fictional Captain Quint relives his time in the water with Chief Brody and Matt Hooper. It is used to explain the character's almost maniacal hunting of sharks. That is totally understandable when you learn the real story from the survivors who lived through this nightmare. We move you in this episode from finally finding the ship at the bottom of the Philippine Sea to looking at how our selected survivors ended up on the ship, to the night it went down and left them stranded in the water for five nights and four days. They were stranded in the deepest area of the Pacific Ocean infested with the most aggressive of deep water predators, As Captain Quint said, " by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour." It is an extraordinary story , that captures in one tale the price our nation has often had to pay to be free. Our Podcast wished to recognize the veterans whose oral history and interviews we used to tell this story, all but one are now deceased : Edgar Harrell, Art Leenerman, Don McCall, Earl Wiggins, San Gabriel, Adolfo Celaya, and Harold Bray, (Mr. Bray is the lone survivor that is still living as of this production. ) JAWS Credit :Universal Pictures(United States, 1975)(Universal, An MCA Company, theatrical)Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine GaryJaws [Original Score] by John Williams released in 1975Listen to The Compass of PowerAnd ask where the politicians are coming from.Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!
It is the most horrific tale from the most catastrophic war the World has ever known. It is the story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, the warship that had just completed its top secret mission to deliver the uranium needed to build the first atomic bomb that would be dropped on Hiroshima , Japan. It would be sunk by a Japanese submarine as it traveled through the Philippine Sea on its way to Leyte, in the Philippines. the story was largely forgotten, even at the time, by a U.S. Government that had just won the war, announcing the sinking at the same time as the Japanese surrender, and by the American public anxious to move on from the war that had so dominated their lives for three and a half years. It was only revived, and brought back to the public consciousness by a pivotal scene in a summer blockbuster movie in 1975. In the movie "JAWS", the fictional Captain Quint of the shark hunting ship "Orca" was said to be an Indianapolis survivor, and the speech he gave about the event was the heart of the movie. In this preview, we use portions of that dramatic cinematic moment, delivered by the Shakespearean theater giant, Robert Shaw, and directed by the legendary Stephen Spielberg, to lead you through a preview of the tale, as told by the real survivors of the sinking of the Indianapolis. It is a gripping, horrific, heroic, and in the end hopeful story, of the largest naval catastrophe of the war. In a coming two part podcast documentary special edition at the start of our podcast's 11th season in late September. Hello Again and welcome back to Been Drinkin' Been Watchin' On todays episode we talk about the classic that started most peoples fear of the ocean, JAWS! Being the Chief of Police seemed like a breezy job for the summer for Chief Brody, until fear and terror makes it way closer to the shore. With the help of scollorly Hooper and unhinged Captain Quint, Chief Brody must hunt down and kill a monster shark as it terrorizes a small ocean town. Jaws stars Roy Scheider Richard Dreyfus, and Robert Shaw. Directed by Steven Spielberg Enjoy y'all!
In the film Jaws, Matt Hooper tells Mayor Larry Vaughn that sharks are a "Miracle of Evolution", in that all they do is swim, eat and make baby sharks. Today's Blathering guest is a miracle of evolution because Ryan Dacko has evolved over and over again. His latest evolution has given us The Jaws Obsession Podcast and The Book of Quint. The latter being a derivative work of Jaws as the backstory of Captain Quint. Ryan is the kind of guy who, when he decides he is going to do something, you can bet money he will do it. He decided he was going to make a 16mm film, so he went to NYC and bought a camera. He decided he wanted to gain the attention of a Hollywood Producer by running across the United States. Now, he wants to convince the world that Jaws is the greatest movie of all time. Some of us don't need much convincing. Ryan impressed the hell out of me when I heard the opening theme for episode one of the Jaws Obsession Podcast (jawsOB.com) and he continues to impress me. He is as down to earth as anyone can be and is as disciplined a man I have ever seen. This is one of my favorite episodes to date which is why it is twice the length of a typical Blathering. Listen to this, then listen to his podcast. The video version is here:
Dan went to Denver to host The WhiskyX, and while a mile high chatted with country music star Paul Cauthen. Hear it here. Also on the show, author Brian Freedman, whose just-released book "Crushed: How a Changing Climate Is Altering the Way We Drink" is for anyone who is interested in the ways in which our dramatically shifting natural environment is affecting the beverages we've all taken for granted. Plenty of books have been written about the effects of climate change on our food system, yet none has so vividly given readers the opportunity to understand how their beloved wines and spirits are being affected. Until now. And finally, Dan goes drinking with Captain Quint of "Jaws." Here's to swimming with bow-legged women! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

With the help of Captain Quint and the Lady Judith, our adventurers make it to the dungeon. But what kind of dungeon is this? It looks more like a casino than a dungeon... Aren't casinos a bad place for Vandal to be? Will Whip be able to keep Vandal from spending all their money? And has Rasnaar ever been to a casino?
Yes, you read the title right, we are back in the water again! This week we discuss a tale that was first brought to our attention by a famous movie. The survivor story was the bases for Captain Quint's hatred and fear of sarks in "Jaws". I've been wanting to do this story for a long time as Jade is a HUGE fan of the movie. Then when she told the story about Tsutomu Yamaguchi, it sparked the recollection of the USS Indianapolis, so I of course had to tell that story! We also discuss why we had to take a break from recording as Jade delt with Bell's palsy and was unable to speak properly. I guess in a way Jade survived not being able to talk for a few weeks, which if you knew her might be considered a true tragedy! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/whatdidntkillme/support

In Episode 12, the Beers in The Lot crew appeals to the "try hards" in beer league to stop trying so hard; summarizes their theory that Captain Quint murdered Ben Gardner to get the contract to hunt down the shark in the movie Jaws; and the uncertainty around the NHL, major juniors, and college hockey getting started.

In Episode 3, Rick and Jerz walk the line on a few topics including an ex acquaintance from college with a Nazi tattoo, and Tim Ryan's off putting comments about Lamar Jackson's skin color. Scattered throughout is Rick's journey to Lake Placid for his hockey tournament during a massive snow storm that shook the Northeast. Ricky does a solid Captain Quint accent from Jaws (Aheehaheray?), and eventually starts sucking helium from a balloon to cap the whole thing off. No wine was wasted in the creation of this podcast.
