Although nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Henry VIII in the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons, audiences now may know Robert Shaw best for his role as Captain Quint in the 1975 film Jaws. Having been released a decade later, Shaw’s performance as the grizzled shark hunter served as an important role in the Hollywood blockbuster, mixing a drunken tone with a confident look that sold viewers on the idea that he could help defeat any animal. Shaw’s life story— from his work in theatre to his time making movies— is all referenced in a new book written by his nephew titled Robert Shaw: An Actor’s Life On The Set Of Jaws And Beyond. For this week’s FilmWeek feature, we sit down with book author Christopher Shaw Myers about his uncle’s work and his new book. “You're gonna need a bigger boat.” Join your favourite TransAtlantic podcasting crew – Ian & Megs – as we head out to sea with special guest Carlo from The Movie Loot for our 288th episode, diving deep into Steven Spielberg's blockbuster breakthrough Jaws (1975). We're trading crane kicks for chum buckets and mechanical shark mishaps as we discuss: The real-life beef between Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw—method acting, ego clashes, and barbed insults at sea. Spielberg's first reaction to hearing the now-iconic Jaws theme from John Williams… and why he thought it was a joke. Just how crucial it is to find an actress who can tick all the boxes—especially when it comes to screaming convincingly. The urban legend behind the film's POV shots—and whether the broken shark really made the film better. Is the actual shark reveal a thrilling payoff… or a rubbery letdown? We break down whether it holds water. We all agreed it's a film of two halves—but did we agree on which half was better? Would Jaws still work with a female character in one (or more) of the core trio? We explore casting, gender dynamics, and cabin tension. How many big screams should a film have? Is there a magic number—or do we just love that head-in-the-boat moment too much? Does Brody have the worst wife ever for casually revealing his deepest fear to a total stranger at dinner? The key changes from the Peter Benchley novel—and why most of them were for the better (goodbye, mafia subplot). Why Spielberg was convinced he'd never work again after Jaws—and how it nearly swallowed his career whole before making him a legend. And finally, whether Jaws is the Best Film Ever.   Catch so much more of Carlo on The Movie Loot on Apple Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-loot/id1578191119 or on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/4o5ZvtvZ64XAoxIIxiAj1q   Become a Patron of this podcast and support the BFE at https://www.patreon.com/BFE. Our hosts dig into all of the ingredients that give the film its staying power, from memorable one-liners to sneaky pop-culture references to brilliant casting (particularly the scene-stealing Robert Shaw). They also explore the enduring horror of a shark attack, the iconic John Williams score, and the indelible impression of seeing Jaws on the big screen. Dana and Tom with returning guests Klarissa (I've Seen That One (IG)) and Ralph Esparza (Film Producer) re-revisit Jaws (1975) for its 50th Anniversary: directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb, cinematography by Bill Butler, score by John Williams, starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss.Plot Summary: Jaws is a masterclass in cinematic suspense, a film that grips the audience with primal fear and refuses to let go. Directed with surgical precision by a young Steven Spielberg, it tells the story of a seaside town terrorized by a great white shark—an unseen menace that lurks beneath the surface both literally and metaphorically. Roy Scheider's Chief Brody, caught between political pressure and his own conscience, anchors the human drama, while Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw provide texture as a scientist and a grizzled fisherman, respectively. But the real triumph of Jaws is its restraint. The mechanical shark's frequent malfunctions forced Spielberg to show less, and in doing so, he created more: more tension, more imagination, more terror. John Williams' iconic score doesn't just accompany the action—it is the shark. What emerges is not just a thriller, but a work of art that understands the mechanics of fear and the anatomy of heroism. It's not about a shark; it's about the people who must confront it—and, by extension, themselves.Guests:KlarissaI've Seen That One (IG)Previously on Roman Holiday (1953) RevisitRalph Esparza (Film Producer)Credited on Tollbooth, Mad House, Killer Date, An Occasional Hell, and One Degree Celcius@ralph_esparza on IGPreviously on Magnolia (1999)Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome Back Klarissa and Ralph03:11 Relationship(s) with Jaws15:34 Cast of Jaws16:32 Why Doesn't Jaws Seem to Age as Much as Its Comtemporaries?23:23 What is Jaws About?33:07 Background for Jaws38:33 Jaws Success - Accident or Genius?40:35 Plot Summary for Jaws42:05 Did You Know?45:51 First Break46:48 What's Happening with Klarissa and Ralph49:38 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy52:20 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance54:22 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty59:24 Second Break01:00:07 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:06:28 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:15:15 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:17:57 In Memoriam01:19:55 Remaining Questions for Jaws01:33:22 Thank You to Klarissa and Ralph01:35:30 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter,

This week, Emilio, Julian and Madeline set sail with pop culture writer and Spielberg aficionado Mike Duquette aboard to take on 'Jaws', the landmark film that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer.  The group discuss what makes this film so unique in film history, Spielberg's maturation as a nascent Hollywood director, the ways in which the novel and the film differ, the iconic Oscar-winning score by John Williams, the underappreciated performances throughout, and what modern blockbusters could learn from the stakes and scopes of this story.  It's a lovefest for a timeless film that still feels fresh and captivating today as it did when it first hit theaters a half century ago!   Mike Duquette has worked for Legacy Recordings, Rhino Records, Allmusic, Ultimate Classic Rock, Discogs, Observer, uDiscover Music and Mondo Records, where he penned the liner notes to their 40th anniversary vinyl release of John Williams' score to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. He founded The Second Disc, a website devoted to music reissues and box sets, in 2010, and writes about other music, movies and film novelizations at Duque's Delight.Listeners... what's your first memory of watching a Steven Spielberg film?  Let us know here, and we'll share some of our favorite responses in a future episode: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSehHyTMNV2UaItyxtEr0T6IugLq_Huw6tcb_Nc7cmT5gOXnhg/viewform?usp=headerIf you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2968: Jaws (film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 20 June 2025, is Jaws (film).Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg. Based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley, it stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that attacks beachgoers at a summer resort town. Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography.Shot mostly on location at Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts from May to October 1974, Jaws was the first major motion picture to be shot on the ocean and consequently had a troubled production, going over budget and schedule. As the art department's mechanical sharks often malfunctioned, Spielberg decided to mostly suggest the shark's presence, employing an ominous and minimalist theme created by composer John Williams to indicate its impending appearances. Spielberg and others have compared this suggestive approach to that of director Alfred Hitchcock. Universal Pictures released the film to over 450 screens, an exceptionally wide release for a major studio picture at the time, accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign with heavy emphasis on television spots and tie-in merchandise.Regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster and won several awards for its music and editing. It was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars two years later; both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films with simple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands of theaters and advertised heavily. Jaws was followed by three sequels (none of which involved Spielberg or Benchley) and many imitative thrillers. In 2001, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. The film is available on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray; it was previously distributed on VHS and Betamax. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:16 UTC on Friday, 20 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Jaws (film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Emma.

ROBERT SHAW: An Actor's Life on the Set of JAWS and Beyond is the first narrative biography of Robert Shaw, written by his nephew, Christopher Shaw Myers, bringing fresh insight into the life of the celebrated actor. The biography is timed to the 50th Anniversary of JAWS this summer; Universal is bringing the film back to first-run theatres just in time for (gulp!) beach season.A true Renaissance man, Robert Shaw's professional success on the screen, stage, and page are just one part of his multifaceted story. From his childhood as a Brit in Orkney, Robert was a natural leader who had a penchant for performing. Despite stacked successes both on and off the stage-he was one of the few people to receive both an Oscar nomination for acting and a Tony nomination for writing-international fame eluded him until the breakout of JAWS.Myers also offers a revealing look at the forces that shaped such a dynamic individual, including Shaw's childhood during World War II, his indomitable mother, his activist sister, and the traumatic events of their childhood that led to Shaw's lifelong battle with alcohol addiction.Shaw cut his teeth in the London theatre, acting alongside such legendary Shakespearian stalwarts as Sir John Gielgud, Sir Alec Guiness, and Sir Michael Redgrave. He was nominated for an Oscar (A Man for All Seasons) and dyed his hair blond as James Bond's nemesis in To Russia With Love. He developed his craft moving between stage, screen, and television. He helped Paul Newman and Robert Redford turn The Sting into Academy Award gold. But it was Shaw's unforgettable role in the astounding success of JAWS, the groundbreaking film that became the first "summer blockbuster" which transformed American film forever. With genre-bending innovation and revolutionary revenue as the first movie to exceed $100 million in the U.S. box office, JAWS was, and remains, a legendary touchstone in pop culture. The film's iconic USS Indianapolis monologue was written by Shaw himself and had fans scrambling to their history books to learn more about this gruesome moment in military history. "Anyway, we delivered the bomb."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, turns 50 this month. Chief Brody, played by Roy Scheider, is pulled in multiple directions after a fatal shark attack, and subsequent murders, none of which the town's local leaders take seriously. When Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfuss, comes into the picture, the two of them unite with the hope of getting to the bottom of the situation, with factual, scientific accuracy in mind. Hooper and Brody as outsiders, not locals, eventually team up with Robert Shaw's Quint to hunt down the shark, and end the beast's terror. Lisa Lake, a killer designer, awesome photographer, and drone pilot, vividly remembers seeing Jaws in the theatre and hadn't seen it since then, but she re-watched it for this episode.-With over twenty years of creative experience, Lisa Lake is a photographer, graphic designer, and drone pilot who delivers marketing and advertising, logos and dynamic websites, ad campaigns, pro-level photography, and video. A little past midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis, a US Navy cruiser, had just delivered the uranium that would be used in the first nuclear bomb dropped on Japan, and was returning to the Philippines when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo. The ship was badly damaged in the attack and within ten minutes it rolled onto its side, dumping 890 crewmen into the pitch-black ocean and dragging the remaining 300 down with the ship. Those who survived the torpedo strike did what they could to grab supplies before abandoning ship, but there were very few life boats or life jackets, so many of the sailors had to float in the water or cling to the few rafts they did manage to take before jumping from the boat. To make matters worse, their mission had been highly confidential and no one in the Navy knew where the Indianapolis was, much less that it had sank. The surviving crew thought things were about as bad as they could get, then the sharks began showing up.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1945.
