The ‘Smartphone-free Childhood' movement has alerted many of us to the dangers inherent in our – and our kids' – use of devices. But while we can shield children from technology in their early years, withdrawing from the online world is not an option for most of us in adult life. So how do we ensure that we – and our children when they grow up – develop a healthy relationship with smartphones and don't become addicted to mindless scrolling and harmful consumption? On May 13, Professor Kaitlyn Regehr – one of the world's foremost experts on digital literacy – comes to Intelligence Squared to set out the science of smartphone addiction. She will provide a practical guide for taking advantage of the good things the internet has to offer while giving advice on how to avoid its darker side. Regehr will discuss how to think critically in a digital environment that is constantly seeking to harvest your attention and how to understand misogyny, pornography, politics, body image, advertising and violence online. ------ This is the first instalment of a two-part episode. Welcome to episode 130 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 22 June 2023] of #mhTV. This week Nicky Lambert and David Munday spoke with guest Dr Emily Setty about misogyny, masculinity and wellbeing. You can join in the discussion by commenting on the Facebook Live chat or by tweeting and including the hashtag #mhTV. Dr Emily Setty is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Surrey. Her academic research focuses on young people's experiences of sex and relationships, both online and offline, and how the ‘online world' is affecting their socio-sexual development, learning, and behaviour. She primarily conducts qualitative research whereby she speaks directly with young people about their perspectives and experiences and critically interprets the accounts they produce about how they are being affected and influenced by their experiences in their relationships and peer cultures. Dr Setty has recently conducted research on how lockdown affected sex and relationships for young people; risk and transgression online for youth; educating teenage boys about consent; harmful sexual behaviours and peer-on-peer abuse in schools; and ‘influencer culture' for girls and young women. She works closely with a range of frontline professionals and organisations working with young people and national and local government to translate research findings into effective policy and practice designed to address the issues and challenges that young people face regarding sex and relationships in their contemporary digital cultures. But while making his mark on the big and small screens in Wizards & Warriors, The Last Days of Pompeii, V, The Monster Squad, and Zorro, he never lost his passion for art, and he now has an exhibit of his own at the Petley Jones Gallery in Vancouver, BC. Renae is back to show us P.A.C.E. in action! This bonus episode is in follow up to our conversation in S11E5 where we cover this model of parenting in the wake of kids having experienced developmental or relational trauma. If you want to know what it sounds and looks like to put Dr. Hughes' approach into motion with your kids, have a listen.
Dear caregivers of kids who have been through really messy and hard stuff,We are so grateful for you - the way you show up for the kids in your lives even when you feel lost with how to best support them, when their behaviours look so overwhelming, and when you start to wonder if things can get better. Relationship trauma takes a long time to heal from, and when a young, vulnerable child is in an environment that for whatever complex reasons can't be present for and responsive to their innate needs for security, it can feel like the resulting wounds might be too hard to repair. When you are in a parenting role with a child who is relearning how to trust their adults, their expressions of their trauma, fear and mistrust can feel insulting, personal, and unsafe for YOU. We know this and we understand. We're here to get real about the impacts of attachment trauma but also to provide models of understanding about what we can do to give our futures their best chance. Humans are shockingly resilient. Let's stay open to surprises, particularly when parts of us are convinced there's no way through to healing. Renae is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and parent (both biological and adoptive) and she uses the P.A.C.E approach - a model developed by Dr. Daniel Hughes which Renae refers to as a "game changer" both personally and professionally. Today she'll walk us through what P.A.C.E. means, how and why it works, and she's even agreed to come back for a bonus episode in follow up to this conversation which will serve as a "lab" of sorts. I'll provide her with some situations and scenarios that come up with kids who have had relationship traumas in their past, and she'll demonstrate how the P.A.C.E. approach would sound like in response. If you want to check out Renae's work, you can find her information HERE.To read more about Dr. Daniel Hughes' approach, go to his website http://www.danielhughes.org/And if you want to learn more about complex trauma and brain development, we'd encourage you to listen to our previous podcast episode {S8E6} with Dr. Chuck Geddes, which you can listen to HERE or wherever you listen to Parenting in the Trenches. If ever there was a deep trench of mud, it's parenting kids who have a history of trauma. We want you to have support and resources to stay well and to help your child find healing. Holding steady with you,Karen

Former Flames defenceman Robyn Regehr joins Leafs Lunch to talk about his long-time teammate Jarome Iginla's induction into the Hall of Fame, what made him such a special player, how competitive he was off the ice and special moments from the 2004 Flames Cup fun.
With an athletic background as a competitive figure skater, Duncan Regehr became a classically-trained Shakespearean stage actor before venturing to Hollywood. Once there, it didn't take him long to win roles in major films and TV series. After appearing in Wizards and Warriors, Duncan snagged lead roles in The Last Days of Pompeii, and My Wicked, Wicked Ways...all of which lead to his most iconic role as "Don Diego de la Vega" in 88 episodes of Zorro. Regehr has since appeared in dozens of shows, drawing a huge following for his Star Trek: TNG performances, but in this interview with Bob & Suzanne McCullough, you'll learn the source of his true creative passion. No mere "dabbler" as an artist or writer, is written works and paintings are found in collections worldwide, including the Smithsonian Institute, the Jilin Collection of China, the Kunstallen in Copenhagen, Focus on the Masters Archives for the Getty Museum and the Syllavethy Collection of Scotland. His books The Dragon's Eye, Corvus Rex, Chrysalid, Scarecrow and Presence combine prose, poetry and visual imagery...a true experience and insight into the man. He is a Royal Canadian Artist, a recipient of the American Vision Award of Distinction in the Arts and holds a Doctorate of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria. A creative force to be reckoned with since early childhood, Duncan Regehr defines the 21st Century "Renaissance Man." This is a conversation not to be missed!

Brad Regehr (BA '93) was working at the Turnkey Desk when a friend stopped by holding an LSAT study guide. That's the first time he considered becoming a lawyer. A grandchild of a residential school survivor, and a survivor himself of the Sixties Scoop, Brad has now worked in Indigenous law for more than 20 years. In fall 2020, he was named president of the Canadian Bar Association -- the first Indigenous president in the organization's 124-year history. Brad speaks with Abby Ollila, a current history student at Waterloo. They talk about how he reconnected with his identity and culture as a student, and what the future holds for Indigenous rights in Canada. How do scientists choose what they do research on? In this episode, I feature a paper by Regehr who offers an insightful metaphor to help scientists think about their research interests in the form of islands and archipelagos. This September Brad Regehr made history, becoming the first First Nations President of the Canadian Bar Association. A partner at Maurice Law in Winnipeg, the first and only indigenous owned national law firm in Canada, he has focused on civil litigation, aboriginal, corporate and administrative law. He has represented and advised First Nations clients on natural resource projects, land claims, flooding and tax agreements. And he is a past President of the Manitoba Bar association. As an infant Regehr was adopted by a non-indegenous family and raised in Winnipeg. Though, unlike many first nations children taken in the 60's scoop who had horrible experiences, he says “I was one of the lucky ones. I got adopted into a loving, caring family.” And he has since reconnected with his biological family in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. He and National Chief Perry Bellegarde discuss the impact of his adoption and the sixties scoop on his decision to go into the law, the importance of the recognition of indigenous, customary law as one of the pillars of Canada's legal system, why the UN Declaration on the Rights Indigenous People needs to be implemented in Canada, the importance of First Nations people being in senior leadership positions and more.A big thanks goes out to the Red Dog Singers of Treaty 4 Territory in Saskatchewan for our theme music. The Ahkameyimok Podcast is produced by David McGuffin of Explore Podcast Productions.
Recently we got the unfortunate news that the new administration in Ontario plans on cancelling the current basic income trials. At the time of publishing, the program is still happening, and political pressure on the Ontario government may be quite valuable right now. Jim talked with Basic Income Canada Network Chairperson Sheila Regehr about what's happening with the pilot and what people can do to push back against its cancellation.
