Atmosphäre statt Infodump also.

In today's conversation Judith Germain speaks to Gary Coulton about harnessing adaptive intelligence. Have you heard of the saying, "Show—don't tell?"In this episode, the writers talk about info-dumps—boring blocks of text with backstory or other information writers think their readers need to know. But the question is, do they really need to know so much? And is there a better way of sharing this information besides dumping it all in a very boring paragraph that stops the story moving forward? Listen in to hear what the gang have to say. Our special guest is Sue Whiting! We begin with Salix finally speaking to Gerrvis, the Void Dragon from “Bound to the Void,” in which Gervis extends his aid to give them full control over their promised gifts. After which, the party realizes that they are on a descent. The had finally made it to the lost city of Drose, and their arrival was expected by those who received them. A Unillum with a salamander fire spirit tells the ship to begin their descent. Once on the ground, they are met with Chantico, The Sentinel/Protector of the Eternal Flame, they are greeted and told to go with Hagen, her aid, while Zechs and Galahad follow her. Galahad and Zechs go on to meet Xoco, the woman Galahad was told to meet, and they find that she was told to meet him as well. Galahad is tasked with aiding her in finding her paladin oath. Zechs and Galahad also rundown what has been happening with the party and ask if Drose can offer anything to help Zechs with his Malar situation. The others meet with the Heart of the Eternal Flame, Tozi, and get a brief history lesson about Drose and the Guardian's Rapier that is with Arguile. Xoco is told to watch Zechs as they trust their party but not what he harbors. Galahad finds out about the trial and that he is to help Xoco become the Guardian of the Drose. They've finally arrived in the lost city of Drose, just what mysteries will they uncover? Find out what happens next in this episode of the Medusa's Cascade: Collateral Damage! In this week's quick tips, we're taking a deep dive into the info dump. What's that, you ask?An info dump happens with the author writes everything they know about a character, setting, or their worldbuilding into a single stretch of prose. It's really common, especially for newer writers who feel like they need to explain everything for the reader.TL:DR - You don't.But how can you avoid it?Tip #1: Beware the prologue. Readers don't care about the world until they care about the characters, which is why many will skip the prologue anyway. If you're going to write one, keep it short, sweet, and in the action.Tip #2: We like the broken glass metaphor. Imagine you write it all down on a single pane of glass, then drop the glass. Pick up the pieces and insert the shards of information only where necessary. If you're enjoying this podcast, please consider supporting the show. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
Talking about show vs tell at the scene level is a little bit harder than talking about it at the paragraph and scene levels. But it's also a tiny bit easier. When you're looking for telling at this level of the story, what you're looking for is a couple of things: A butt ton of backstory. A butt ton of info dumps A lot of flashback. You can have bits of these things in your stories. Where us authors get into trouble is when we have a lot of it and we have a lot of it in telling language. So, that really happens when we do this: Bud Godzilla looked down on his sweet friend turned zombie. They'd been friends forever, so this hurt. Three page description of how they met – info dump or backstory Or: Bud Godzilla looked down on his sweet friend turned zombie. They'd been friends forever, so this hurt. Three page scene of how they met – flashback. You usually want to limit these places and instead sprinkle in action/dialogue/details throughout to help the readers understand that the characters have history or the world exists before the book begins. There's a balance between telling too much and too little. You want the reader to anticipate that something cool is going to happen or has happened, but you don't want to leave them confused or knowing way too much. You know how sometimes you'll be on the plane and the person will not stop talking for six hours about their boil, their aunts' piano obsessions, their dinner plans while you just want to finish watching the inflight movie? That's what happens with those paragraphs of backstory, flashbacks and info dumping. Everything is paused. The stakes are gone. And when that happens? You risk losing your reader completely. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Pogie says keep your eyes on the prize, my friend, and laugh. COOL WRITING EXERCISE TO MAX OUT YOUR SKILLS This comes from the Writing Cooperative and it's really about how to spot your info dump, which is an exercise. "Once you spot an info-dump, ask yourself the following questions: "How much of this information is it essential for the reader to know right now? Most of the information will not be essential. Be ruthless. Cut it out. "Of the information left — if any — how can I get the protagonist to do something which shows or implies the information? This may involve minor or major rewriting, but you do no-one any good by avoiding it. Rework or add scenes which convey the information through present situations and your protagonist's actions. "If the information is necessary, how can I use it to enhance the emotional effect of the scene? Key in on the emotional impact of the scene and if you must retain information that can't be shown or implied, look for ways to add it in a way that will have an emotional impact. ;But the woman you saw can't have been my mom, Angie. Mom died when I was a kid.'" I'll turn him into a flea, a harmless, little flea, and then I'll put that flea in a box, and then I'll put that box inside of another box, and then I'll mail that box to myself, and when it arrives, I'll smash it with a hammer! It's brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, I tell you! Genius I say! Or, to save on postage, I'll just poison him with this.- Yzma, Emperor's New Groove The post S33E9 – Avoiding the Info Dump: The Villain Monologue appeared first on Writing Roots.
