The beach town of Amity Island has been experiencing some mysterious attacks from a mysterious entity within the nearby ocean, resulting in some brutal deaths. And the local police chief Brody (Roy Scheider) is concerned that it MIGHT be sharks....and he's not the only one, there's also the visiting marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) who suspects that it MIGHT be a Great White Shark. :o And besides them, there's the local sea-dog Quint (Robert Shaw) who not only believes that it's a Great White Shark but that ONLY he can kill it. And we're off to the sea in Steven Spielberg's classic mega-blockbuster which is about to turn 50! We're gonna need a BIGGER boat indeed.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Wait… wait a minute. *They're real?* Like, actual people? With arms and legs and vocal cords and the whole thing?? I thought Clay and Amanda were just really well-programmed horror podcasting AIs, beamed directly into my headphones by some cursed Spotify algorithm designed to recommend creepy movies and make me question my life choices. But no—apparently they're corporeal, walking around like real humans, and this week they've gone LIVE, baby! That's right, this is *The Rotten Horror Picture Show*'s first-ever live episode, recorded at the Waltham Public Library! I mean… a library? Full of people? And not a single CAPTCHA test in sight? Incredible. And what better movie to kick off this real-world appearance than the number one movie on the Rotten Tomatoes 200 Best Horror Movies of All Time list, Steven Spielberg's 1975 masterpiece of maritime mayhem, *Jaws*? It's the original summer blockbuster, the reason you still hesitate before dipping a toe into the ocean, and arguably the scariest thing to ever feature a mechanical shark that constantly broke down. Clay and Amanda take a deep dive into the depths of dread, discussing killer soundtracks, boat sizes, and how a film can be equal parts terrifying and a masterclass in character-driven tension. So tune in to this historic live recording! Marvel at the sound of human voices bouncing off actual library walls! Hear the gasps of the audience as they realize, in real time, that the mayor of Amity Island is the real villain. And most importantly, help me come to terms with the fact that I've been emotionally bonding with two podcast hosts who are not, in fact, haunted chatbots.I mean, I guess it makes sense… no AI would ever have taste *this* good. And be sure to hit up patreon.com/thepenskyfile to hear all the coverage of remakes and reboots this year!

Doomed fishing boat cabin ambience — We're back at the movies this week, spending an entire night searching for a great white on the Orca. The engine idles, the waves splut and gurgle, a tracking buoy bleeps in the waters just outside… (Ambience was inspired by the cabin conversation about scars and past traumas). That's right, we are off the coast of Amity Island and smack in the middle of the No Country for Old Men of fish movies: Jaws. I wouldn't want to run into either film's villains in some fictional back alley. But at least Anton Chigurh's methodical carnage was contained in realistic modern depravity and Texas. Bruce did his murders amongst the frolicking salt water taffy set on the Mackinac of Massachusetts: Martha's Vineyard. But don't worry — Bruce and Anton are not in this episode (nor are John Williams, Richard Dreyfus, and Mr. “SmileYouSunavaBitch”). In this episode, we are expanding the background interior cabin and outdoor sounds of the Orca (from around the chat about scars). It will be you alone on an idle little ship, waiting for a shark. Also, thank you, Kyle, for the Jaws suggestion — the original episode photo by Daniel Torobekov on Pexels.

Today, we're setting sail to explore our Top 5 Islands in film and television, showcasing settings that have become iconic in their own right. Following that, we'll catch the waves with a review of Moana and then take a detour to the charming yet mysterious island setting of the TV series Bergerac.Top 5 Islands in Film and Television:Isla Nublar from Jurassic Park (1993) - This infamous island, home to the groundbreaking but ill-fated Jurassic Park, stands out as a landmark in cinema for its awe-inspiring (and terrifying) clash of nature and technology.Skull Island from King Kong (Various Versions) - The mysterious and perilous Skull Island, with its monstrous inhabitants and primordial landscapes, has captivated audiences since King Kong first appeared on the screen in 1933.Amity Island from Jaws (1975) - The quintessential small island community turned nightmare locale, Amity Island is synonymous with the lurking dangers of the deep, forever changing our view of a dip in the ocean. The Island from Lost (TV Series, 2004-2010) - More than just a physical location, the Island in Lost is a complex character in its own right, full of mysteries, supernatural occurrences, and philosophical dilemmas.Shutter Island from Shutter Island (2010) - This eerie island serves as the setting for a psychological thriller that blurs the lines between reality and madness, making it a haunting backdrop for its twisty plot.Moana is a vibrant Disney animated film that celebrates Polynesian culture and mythology. The island of Motunui, home to Moana herself, plays a crucial role in the story. It's not just a setting but a symbol of the community and tradition Moana struggles to balance with her adventurous spirit. The film is a delightful journey across the seas, exploring themes of identity, bravery, and environmental stewardship. Shifting gears, Bergerac transports us to the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, where the titular detective, Jim Bergerac, solves crimes. While it may not be the tropical locale typically envisioned in island stories, Jersey's charm and mystery provide a captivating backdrop for this classic British series. It's a great show for introducing older themes in a less intense setting, making it suitable for family viewing with older children.Whether you're into the adventurous seas of Moana or the crime-solving escapades in Bergerac, today's episode promises a fascinating look at how islands shape stories in film and television. Join us as we navigate the waters of cinematic islands, where every shore brings a new tale.

Robert Shaw's Explosive Moments on the Set of Jaws: A Case Study What's the perfect summer movie? JAWS, of course! In my opinion, JAWs is one of the greatest films of all time but it was born from a volatile environment, who was it who said - Chaos is the fuel that ignites the fire within, pushing us towards greatness. With never-changing script re-writes, cast fallouts and mechanical failures in the sea off Marthas Vineyard its a wonder this film was ever made. Steven Spielberg's masterpiece led to a new style of suspense in film, which was quite by accident. Where the filmmakers had to come up with creative ways to solve Bruce the shark's constant malfunctioning - this just shows that when you are faced with failure, greatness can emerge. I've been a JAWS fan all these years, I have always been fascinated with this film, it's possibly one of the few movies that's better than the book. I've come back to it time and time again, may be for me it take me back to my childhood in the 1970's where it was a ‘treat' to watch this masterpiece, my eyes would always be shielded when the two alpha sharks, Quint and Bruce would face off. My top 3 films were all made in the 1970's - so is there a case for childhood films staying with you for the long term. So, let's now go to Amity Island where a shark is terrorising the local population who are soon to be celebrating a bumper tourist season for July 4 and a ruthless Mayor who will do anything to make sure the celebrations go ahead until his own son is nearly taken by the shark itself. Our heroes of the story Brodie, Chief of Police - the classic, unwilling hero, a New Yorker getting used to trivial crime on an island, his fear of water which he needs to overcome to defeat the shark. Quint, the belligerent, old-school and difficult but skilled Captain. and Hooper, the rich, intelligent young marine biologist who brings with him modern gadgetry - the perfect antagonist to Quint. This set up is PURE DYNAMITE. All the actors in the film portrayed their part perfectly. But none more so, than British acting legend Robert Shaw. Born on August 9, 1927, in Lancashire, England he originally turned down the role of Quint - he famously said ‘JAWS was not a novel it was a story written by a committee, a piece of sh*t'. Lee Marvin and Sterling Hayden could not step up to the role. Shaw was perfect for the part. Robert Shaw, known for his exceptional acting talent but also for causing significant problems on set. Here are some of the key issues he caused during the production of "Jaws":

In celebration of our 100th episode, what better film to dissect than "JAWS," the blockbuster that redefined the summer movie experience and cemented Steven Spielberg's status as a master storyteller. Released in 1975, "JAWS" not only terrorized audiences with its portrayal of a man-eating great white shark but also demonstrated the power of cinema to evoke primal fears and unforgettable suspense. Let's dive into the depths of "JAWS" and explore what makes it a cinematic masterpiece and a cultural phenomenon. The Genesis of Fear: A Simple Premise, An Unforgettable ImpactBased on Peter Benchley's novel, "JAWS" follows the harrowing ordeal of Amity Island, a fictional New England beach town, as it faces the deadly threat of a massive shark. Chief Brody (Roy Scheider), a New York cop turned local sheriff, marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), and grizzled fisherman Quint (Robert Shaw) set out to kill the beast. Yet, the film's genius lies not in the story it tells but in how it tells it. Spielberg's direction transforms a straightforward plot into a masterclass in tension, pacing, and fear, making the unseen and the unknown our greatest terror. The Cinematic Craft: Building Tension Beneath the SurfaceSpielberg's innovative use of camera angles, John Williams' iconic score, and Verna Fields' tight editing work in concert to create an atmosphere thick with suspense. The decision to delay the full reveal of the shark until deep into the movie amplifies the suspense, making each attack all the more terrifying. Spielberg turns the ocean itself into a character, one that's beautiful yet menacing, inviting yet treacherous. The director's ability to coax fear from the mere suggestion of danger—using the audience's imagination against them—is a testament to his understanding of the horror genre's core principles. The Iconic Score: The Sound of FearJohn Williams' score for "JAWS" is nothing short of legendary. The simple, two-note motif has become synonymous with impending doom, illustrating how powerful a soundtrack can be in driving the emotional pulse of a film. Williams' music plays a pivotal role in building tension, often acting as the shark's unseen presence. It's a prime example of how sound can be used to heighten suspense and invoke visceral reactions from the audience.Characters and Performances: The Human ElementAt its heart, "JAWS" is a story about people, and Spielberg never loses sight of this amidst the thrills and chills. The film's central trio, Brody, Hooper, and Quint, are richly drawn characters brought to life by Scheider, Dreyfuss, and Shaw's compelling performances. Their dynamics—ranging from camaraderie to conflict—add depth to the narrative, making their quest to hunt the shark as much a personal journey as it is a battle for survival. Quint's Indianapolis monologue remains one of cinema's most powerful scenes, offering a glimpse into the scars that define us.Impact and Legacy: Changing the Tide of Cinema"JAWS" didn't just scare millions of people out of the water; it revolutionised the film industry. It was the first true "blockbuster," setting new standards for marketing, distribution, and box office expectations. The summer movie season, now a staple of the film industry, was essentially born with the release of "JAWS." Its success paved the way for high-concept films that prioritize spectacle and broad appeal, shaping the modern blockbuster landscape. Moreover, "JAWS" demonstrated the potential of special effects to enhance storytelling, despite the mechanical shark's frequent malfunctions. These technical difficulties inadvertently improved the film by forcing Spielberg to rely on suggestions rather than explicit visuals, a technique that would influence horror filmmakers for generations. The Cultural Phenomenon: Beyond the ScreenThe impact of "JAWS" extended far beyond movie theatres. It entered the public consciousness like few films before or since, influencing not only pop culture but also our perception of sharks and the ocean. Unfortunately, this led to widespread fear and misunderstanding of sharks, contributing to their vilification and the decline in some shark populations.Yet, the film also inspired legions of filmmakers and cinephiles, sparking a fascination with the power of cinema to create immersive, emotionally resonant experiences. It's a testament to "JAWS"'s enduring appeal that, nearly half a century later, it remains a subject of study, admiration, and, yes, fear. The Immortal "JAWS"As we celebrate our 100th episode by looking back at "JAWS," it's clear that Spielberg's masterpiece is more than just a movie. It's a landmark in filmmaking, a cultural touchstone, and a pivotal moment in cinematic history. Its ability to blend character, story, and technical innovation into a seamless and riveting experience is unmatched."JAWS" taught us that the most profound fears lurk in the unknown and that cinema has the unique ability to tap into those fears, creating unforgettable moments of suspense, terror, and ultimately, triumph. It's a film that continues to captivate, terrify, and inspire awe, proving that great storytelling, like the ocean, is timeless and profound. In revisiting "JAWS," we're reminded of the film's raw power and its monumental impact on cinema and culture. Here's to "JAWS"—a true behemoth of the film world that still reigns supreme in the hearts of movie lovers everywhere. May its legacy continue to inspire awe and wonder for generations to come. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

Gee's tenth pick, the dice love her. There's something in the waters surrounding Amity Island. It's big, has sharp teeth, loves eating people and has a theme tune that plays when it appears. The 50th Annual Regatta could be a disaster! The first ever summer blockbuster movie, Spielberg created a slasher movie where the villain is an animal (sorry for the spoiler, but yes - it's a shark). The boys need some quick cash so hastily wrote “and also Sharks too” on their “will kill the following for $5” sign and as luck would have it the mayor of Amity Island was walking by with a huge Jaws problem! The only catch? They can't shut down the beach and they've only got two days. Zammit's plans quickly get away from him as dolphins start getting dressed up as sexy ladies, JD wants to fasten the effects of global warming and Jackson wants to go fishing with him as the worm. It's Jaws v the boys as they cobble together harebrained scheme after harebrained scheme to get rid of this great white once and for all and earn that $5 (each tho, don't you dare skimp on that extra tenner Mr. Mayor, we will cause a scene).Buy our terrible merch here and check out the Bad Brain Boys on Apple Podcasts at apple.co/badbrainboys. When new Sheriff Martin Brody discovers the remains of a shark attack victim, his first inclination is to close the beaches to swimmers. This doesn't sit well with Mayor Larry Vaughn and several of the local businessmen. Brody backs down to his regret as that weekend a young boy is killed by the predator. The dead boy's mother puts out a bounty on the shark and Amity is soon swamped with amateur hunters and fisherman hoping to cash in on the reward. A local fisherman with much experience hunting sharks, Quint, offers to hunt down the creature for a hefty fee. Soon Quint, Brody and Matt Hooper from the Oceanographic Institute are at sea hunting the Great White shark. As Brody succinctly surmises after their first encounter with the creature, they're going to need a bigger boat. Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. It stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that attacks beachgoers at a summer resort town. Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography. Shot mostly on location at Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, Jaws was the first major motion picture to be shot on the ocean and consequently had a troubled production, going over budget and schedule. As the art department's mechanical sharks often malfunctioned, Spielberg decided mostly to suggest the shark's presence, employing an ominous and minimalist theme created by composer John Williams to indicate its impending appearances. Spielberg and others have compared this suggestive approach to that of director Alfred Hitchcock. Universal Pictures' release of the film to over 450 screens was an exceptionally wide release for a major studio picture at the time, and it was accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign that heavily emphasized television spots and tie-in merchandise. Regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster, and won several awards for its music and editing. It was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars two years later; both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films with simple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands of theaters and advertised heavily. Jaws was followed by three sequels (none of which involved Spielberg or Benchley) and many imitative thrillers, and in 2001, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Jaws is back in cinemas this week, so I wanted to do two things. First, re-release our 2020 episode on Jaws as a distinctly New England story; and second, let you know that Iconography is returning with a new miniseries this fall - five episodes looking at Jaws through the lens of its most iconic character (okay it's most iconic human character), the sea-shanty singing, saltine chomping, Narragansett swilling, shark hunter with a grudge, Quint.
What do an 18-wheeled 1955 Peterbilt 281 semi-truck and a Great White lurking along the coast of Amity Island down Cape Cod, MA have in common? Both are brought to vivid, intimidating, and anonymous life by the one and only Steven Spielberg at the beginning of his highly-decorated filmmaking career. A behind-the-scenes look at 1971's Duel, starring Dennis Weaver, and 1975's Jaws, starring Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw, complete with the usual weekly online poll results, listener trivia segment, and shout-outs!
We watched the original summer blockbuster, Jaws (1975). Even as a first viewing for some, this movie still holds up. It's the 4th of July and Amity Island is bumping with sunshine, hotdogs, and danger? There's a shark threatening anyone who goes in the water and it's up to a sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seaman to hunt the shark. Jaws is a Steven Spielberg classic and while it may not be a traditional horror movie, it is a creature-feature with some of the most memorable characters in film. There's no better time than to grab your hotdogs, some cold beer, and watch this movie and listen to our review guest starring Brandon Pins.Check out our website The Final PodcastJoin the Discord https://discord.gg/nFSnEE9wG2Follow us on Facebook The Final Podcast | FacebookFollow us on Instagram The Final Podcast (@thefinalpodcast) • Instagram photos and videosFollow us on Twitter The Final Podcast (@thefinalpodever) / TwitterMusic Credit: Karl Casey @ White Bat Audiohttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_6h...
