Welcome to our first episode recorded at the London Trauma Conference 2024. In this episode, hosts Iain Beardsell and Natalie May are joined by Matt Hooper from Adelaide to discuss his unique career path, from emergency medicine to pre-hospital and retrieval medicine, intensive care, and more recently, palliative and end-of-life care. The conversation centres around the principles of end-of-life care, particularly in acute and traumatic scenarios, and how these can be integrated with life-saving efforts. Key points include the challenges of shifting focus from survival to quality of death, the importance of recognizing and supporting witnesses and caregivers, and the concept of 'compassionate resuscitation.' Practical tools such as the 'pause' are also explored, aiming to humanize highly charged medical environments and potentially prevent burnout and PTSD among healthcare providers. 00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome 01:00 Key Messages on Death and Palliative Care 02:12 Challenges in End-of-Life Care 03:20 Improving Quality of Death and Relationships 04:32 Emotional Impact on Care Providers 06:41 Navigating End-of-Life Conversations 12:17 Practical Applications in Intensive Care 16:41 The Pause: A Tool for Reflection 21:58 Conclusion and Final Thoughts The Guest - Matt Hooper Matt is an accomplished intensive care specialist with a diverse background in emergency medicine, prehospital & retrieval medicine, and palliative care. Notable for his leadership in developing critical care service models, he founded South Australia's MedSTAR Emergency Medical Retrieval Service. He has also co-authored a highly regarded case-based text book and held key teaching and examining roles nationally and internationally in prehospital and retrieval medicine. With a strong focus on high-performance teams working within high acuity, high consequence environments, Matt's expertise has also extended to human factors in healthcare, cardiothoracic intensive care, ECMO, and clinical ultrasound. More recently however, he has pivoted towards palliative and end of life care, pursuing a Master's degree at Cardiff University and consulting at Mary Potter Hospice in Adelaide. He is passionate about exploring new and innovative ways to prevent potentially avoidable suffering and enhance end of life outcomes for patients in acute care clinical environments.

In this first episode in a two part special edition, we look back at one of the most horrifying stories of all of World War 2, the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. This was the story made famous by a scene in the movie "JAWS" when the fictional Captain Quint relives his time in the water with Chief Brody and Matt Hooper. It is used to explain the character's almost maniacal hunting of sharks. That is totally understandable when you learn the real story from the survivors who lived through this nightmare. We move you in this episode from finally finding the ship at the bottom of the Philippine Sea to looking at how our selected survivors ended up on the ship, to the night it went down and left them stranded in the water for five nights and four days. They were stranded in the deepest area of the Pacific Ocean infested with the most aggressive of deep water predators, As Captain Quint said, " by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour." It is an extraordinary story , that captures in one tale the price our nation has often had to pay to be free. Our Podcast wished to recognize the veterans whose oral history and interviews we used to tell this story, all but one are now deceased : Edgar Harrell, Art Leenerman, Don McCall, Earl Wiggins, San Gabriel, Adolfo Celaya, and Harold Bray, (Mr. Bray is the lone survivor that is still living as of this production. ) JAWS Credit :Universal Pictures(United States, 1975)(Universal, An MCA Company, theatrical)Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine GaryJaws [Original Score] by John Williams released in 1975Listen to The Compass of PowerAnd ask where the politicians are coming from.Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

We're here for week 2 of Beach Party Bonfires & Blood Month! Chant with us: "Blood Beach! Blood Beach! Blood Beach!" We're talking the oft-forgotten C-grade beach horror flick with a subterranean beach creature problem. There's locals and vacationers getting sucked under the sand and only one man - John Saxon - or, was it Burt Young (no, he's too busy daydreaming about Chicago) - or perhaps it was the Dr. Demetrios character that finally helped to troubleshoot this Santa Monica monster problem out? No matter - this film deserves your attention for its low-key charm, hammy acting including plenty of one liners and questionable moments like nosey neighbors commenting on morning routines, beach food vendors, a boat house duet (what the!?) and a Dr. who seemingly would give the Matt Hooper character from Jaws a run for his money. Be careful how you destroy these fictitious creatures, because the creators clearly had a sequel in mind that never was.
In this pod we talk about what Christians believe & how to hold two seemingly opposite ideas in tension with each other and why thats important. We also chat about the importance of "fences", how to disagree agreeably & how to engage with questions in a helpful way without shipwrecking your faith.

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend. Thank you for joining me today as I talk about the Jaws ripoff called Grizzly. Grizzly is a 1976 film in which instead of a giant shark it's a giant grizzly bear also instead of a police chief it's a park ranger who has to take on the giant beast. The movie starts with a flyover of a national park. Then we see two female hikers who are killed by an unseen animal after making camp. After the attacks happen we are introduced to the park ranger chief named Michael Kelly who has to deal with the same political crap as Brody had to in Jaws. Then we are introduced to the grizzly who is a monster and let's be honest if you have or haven't seen the film the title pretty much tells you what is gonna happen. Later in the film, we are introduced to naturalist Arthur Scott who acts like the Matt Hooper character in this film. Arthur Scott tells us that it's a prehistoric type grizzly bear and then before you know it the park supervisor lets in a group of amateur hunters who probably die save one of the hunters who escapes by diving into the water. We see a female forest ranger killed in a waterfall by the grizzly, we see a mother killed and her child mutilated but survive. Finally, after the park supervisor allows Kelly to close the park Kelly, Scott, and Stober all go looking for the bear. The first to die is Scott who after being buried up to his head by the grizzly, who later tries to escape only for the bear to come back and kill him. Next to die is Stober after the grizzly attacks his helicopter and he is thrown from the helicopter. Finally, the grizzly is blown up by Kelly to end our movie. Hello, join me as I talk about the 1975 classic Jaws. Jaws is about a giant great white shark who attacks swimmers on Amity Island beaches. After the shark goes after the police chief's eldest son Michael, Brody enlists the help of oceanographer Matt Hooper and also the maniacal shark hunter Quint. Once they head out to sea to find the monster shark only to find out that maybe just maybe they will need a bigger boat. After Quint shoots at it with a harpoon-like gun which has a marker or barrel attached to it so that the shark won't be able to hide under the water. But the shark defies the barrel and disappears and the men later drink and talk about scares but what shocks everyone is Quint's story about the secret mission of the USS Indianapolis. Later after the shark takes out the power the boat floods a bit which later affects the motor of the boat. Seeing no alternative after the shark pulls out the cleats with a rope attached to it. the men later construct Hooper's shark cage only for Hooper to later have to swim away after the shark attacks the cage. Quint is later killed by the shark and Brody jams a tank in its mouth and later blows the shark up. Hooper shown to have survived his encounter with the shark asks Brody about Quint. To which Brody says no. The men then Swim to shore and the movie ends.Support the show and hope you enjoy My social media links:Instagram:Steven Gervais (@steveng123456) • Instagram photos and videosTikTok:Steven Gervais (@sgandfriendspodcast) | TikTokFacebook group: Steven Gervais and Friends Podcast | FacebookYouTube Channel: Steven Gervais and Friends Podcast - YouTubeDeluxe Edition Network website: The Deluxe Edition NetworkGoodpods:Profile (goodpods.com)my website: Steven Gervais and Friend's Podcast (www.stevengervaisandfriendspodcast.com)Copper Johns beard: https://lddy.no/1gh13use SGANDFRIENDSPODCAST12 at check out for a 10 % discount on your purchase https://www.buzzsprout.com/1983118/support

THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta It's a hot summer on Amity Island, a small community whose main business is its beaches. When new Sheriff Martin Brody discovers the remains of a shark attack victim, his first inclination is to close the beaches to swimmers. This doesn't sit well with Mayor Larry Vaughn and several of the local businessmen. Brody backs down to his regret as that weekend a young boy is killed by the predator. The dead boy's mother puts out a bounty on the shark and Amity is soon swamped with amateur hunters and fisherman hoping to cash in on the reward. A local fisherman with much experience hunting sharks, Quint, offers to hunt down the creature for a hefty fee. Soon Quint, Brody and Matt Hooper from the Oceanographic Institute are at sea hunting the Great White shark. As Brody succinctly surmises after their first encounter with the creature, they're going to need a bigger boat. Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. It stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that attacks beachgoers at a summer resort town. Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography. Shot mostly on location at Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, Jaws was the first major motion picture to be shot on the ocean and consequently had a troubled production, going over budget and schedule. As the art department's mechanical sharks often malfunctioned, Spielberg decided mostly to suggest the shark's presence, employing an ominous and minimalist theme created by composer John Williams to indicate its impending appearances. Spielberg and others have compared this suggestive approach to that of director Alfred Hitchcock. Universal Pictures' release of the film to over 450 screens was an exceptionally wide release for a major studio picture at the time, and it was accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign that heavily emphasized television spots and tie-in merchandise. Regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster, and won several awards for its music and editing. It was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars two years later; both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films with simple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands of theaters and advertised heavily. Jaws was followed by three sequels (none of which involved Spielberg or Benchley) and many imitative thrillers, and in 2001, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
The Stinking Pause podcast - reviewing movies since 2013...some good...some not so good. A special episode this week as part of our 10th birthday celebrations in which Scott is joined by friend and fellow podcaster Anthony Rotunno to chat about one of their favourite movies in the form of a commentary. Jaws (1975) It's a hot summer on Amity Island, a small community whose main business is its beaches. Soon Quint, Brody and Matt Hooper from the Oceanographic Institute are at sea hunting the Great White shark. As Brody succinctly surmises after their first encounter with the creature, they're going to need a bigger boat. "Here lies the body of Mary Lee; died at the age of a hundred and three. For fifteen years she kept her virginity; not a bad record for this vicinity."
In the film Jaws, Matt Hooper tells Mayor Larry Vaughn that sharks are a "Miracle of Evolution", in that all they do is swim, eat and make baby sharks. Today's Blathering guest is a miracle of evolution because Ryan Dacko has evolved over and over again. His latest evolution has given us The Jaws Obsession Podcast and The Book of Quint. The latter being a derivative work of Jaws as the backstory of Captain Quint. Ryan is the kind of guy who, when he decides he is going to do something, you can bet money he will do it. He decided he was going to make a 16mm film, so he went to NYC and bought a camera. He decided he wanted to gain the attention of a Hollywood Producer by running across the United States. Now, he wants to convince the world that Jaws is the greatest movie of all time. Some of us don't need much convincing. Ryan impressed the hell out of me when I heard the opening theme for episode one of the Jaws Obsession Podcast (jawsOB.com) and he continues to impress me. He is as down to earth as anyone can be and is as disciplined a man I have ever seen. This is one of my favorite episodes to date which is why it is twice the length of a typical Blathering. Listen to this, then listen to his podcast. The video version is here:

It's 1975, and all you have thought about since the previous summer is going back on vacation to the beach so you can splash around in the waters and have fun. That was on your mind the entire time until.......until you made the mistake of watching the new movie release of JAWS on the big screen!!! I was too young to see it at the theaters but I seen it later on as I got older and even then it made me never want to go out in the ocean past my knees in the water. This movie had people screaming in the theaters and i'm not surprised to hear that. Based off a novel by Peter Benchley, a shark is terrorizing a small resort town and it's up to the cheif Martin Brody, marine biologist Matt Hooper and local fisherman Quint to go out and hunt it down. Watch if you dare , but you will never swim in the ocean again! Just when you thought it was safe to go ack in the water ..... JAWS!!!!!!!!!!!! This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Monday, June 20th, 2022. Here’s what you may have missed, over the weekend! On Saturday, game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Colorado Avalanche, and the Tampa Bay Lightning took place. The Avalanche took game 1, so Tampa Bay really wanted to even up the series as it shifts back to Florida today… and well… here’s how it went. If you’re a Tampa Bay fan, cover your ears! Cup Final, Gm2: Lightning @ Avalanche 6/18 | NHL Playoffs 2022 Play 0:48-1:05 Play 2:11-2:27 Play 3:40-3:55 Play 5:15-5:27 Play 6:25-6:35 Play 7:43-7:55 Play 8:15-8:30 https://www.outkick.com/nichushkin-stays-hot-avalanche-take-commanding-2-0-series-lead-over-lightning-in-stanley-cup-final/ What you just heard was the absolute demolition of the Tampa Bay Lightning at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche. The Tampa Bay Lightning came into Game 2 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final with a plan. But like Mike Tyson once said, everybody’s got a plan until they get punched in the face. Or in this case, an avalanche of seismic proportions. Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said the key to evening up the series at two was weathering the storm in the first 10 minutes from the Colorado Avalanche. And yet, after those 10 crucial minutes of play inside Ball Arena, Colorado held a 2-0 advantage — just as they did in Game 1. The Avalanche’s onslaught started early and never let up, as Colorado defeated Tampa Bay, 7-0, to take an all-important 2-0 series lead. Why’s that so important, you ask? Teams leading 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Final are 47-5 all-time. The touchdown + extra point loss is Tampa Bay’s worst in its playoff history, topping the 5-0 defeat against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Round 1 this year and the 6-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers back in 1996, the franchise’s first ever playoff appearance. The Avalanche have now scored 11 goals through two games in the series and are 14-2 overall during the playoffs. The seven-goal margin is the largest in a Stanley Cup Final game since 1991, when the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Minnesota North Stars, 8-0, in Game 6 of the series. The series will now shift back to Tampa Bay for Games 3 and 4, with the Lightning looking for any sort of jolt from the Amalie Arena crowd. Puck drop for Game 3 is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. Lies, Propaganda, Story Telling, and the Serrated Edge: This year our national conference is in Knoxville, TN October 6th-8th. The theme of this year’s conference is Lies, Propaganda, Storytelling and the Serrated Edge. Satan is the father of lies, and the mother of those lies is a government who has rejected God. We have especially been lied to these last two years, and the COVIDpanic has been one of the central mechanisms that our government has used to lie to us and to grab more power. Because Christians have not been reading their bibles, we are susceptible to lies and weak in our ability to fight these lies. God has given us His word to fight Satan and his lies, and we need to recover all of God’s word, its serrated edge and all. Mark your calendars for October 6th-8th, as we fight, laugh and feast with fellowship, beer and Psalms, our amazing lineup of speakers, hanging with our awesome vendors, meeting new friends, and more. Early bird tickets are available now, but will be gone before you know it! Sign up now at flfnetwork.com/knoxville2022 https://www.politico.com/news/2022/06/19/world-swimming-transgender-athletes-00040722 Speaking of lies & Propaganda… let’s talk about transgender athletes! World swimming bans transgender athletes from women’s events World swimming’s governing body has effectively banned transgender women from competing in women’s events, starting Monday. FINA members widely adopted a new “gender inclusion policy” on Sunday that only permits swimmers who transitioned before age 12 to compete in women’s events. The organization also proposed an “open competition category.” “This is not saying that people are encouraged to transition by the age of 12. It’s what the scientists are saying, that if you transition after the start of puberty, you have an advantage, which is unfair,” James Pearce, who is the spokesperson for FINA president Husain Al-Musallam, told The Associated Press. “They’re not saying everyone should transition by age 11, that’s ridiculous. You can’t transition by that age in most countries and hopefully you wouldn’t be encouraged to. Basically, what they’re saying is that it is not feasible for people who have transitioned to compete without having an advantage.” Pearce confirmed there are currently no transgender women competing in elite levels of swimming. The World Professional Association for Transgender Health just lowered its recommended minimum age for starting gender transition hormone treatment to 14 and some surgeries to 15 or 17. FINA’s new 24-page policy also includes proposals for a new “open competition” category. The organization said it was setting up “a new working group that will spend the next six months looking at the most effective ways to set up this new category.” Pearce told the AP that the open competition would most likely mean more events, but those details still need to be worked out. The members voted 71.5% in favor at the organization’s extraordinary general congress after hearing presentations from three specialist groups — an athlete group, a science and medicine group and a legal and human rights group — that had been working together to form the policy following recommendations given by the International Olympic Committee last November. The IOC urged shifting the focus from individual testosterone levels and calling for evidence to prove when a performance advantage existed. FINA said it recognizes “that some individuals and groups may be uncomfortable with the use of medical and scientific terminology related to sex and sex-linked traits (but) some use of sensitive terminology is needed to be precise about the sex characteristics that justify separate competition categories.” In March, Lia Thomas a man, made history in the United States as the first man to win woman’s NCAA swimming championship, the 500-yard freestyle. The coward, Thomas said last month on ABC’s “Good Morning America” that he was aiming to become an Olympic swimmer. He also disputed those who say he has an unfair biological edge that ruins the integrity of women’s athletics, saying “trans women are not a threat to women’s sports.” The University of Pennsylvania didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from Thomas. Other sports have also been examining their rules around transgender athletes. On Thursday, cycling’s governing body updated its eligibility rules for transgender athletes with stricter limits that will force riders to wait longer before they can compete. The International Cycling Union (UCI) increased the transition period on low testosterone to two years, and lowered the maximum accepted level of testosterone. The previous transition period was 12 months but the UCI said recent scientific studies show that “the awaited adaptations in muscle mass and muscle strength/power” among athletes who have made a transition from male to female takes at least two years. From sports, let’s go to entertainment, to infinity and beyond!!! https://variety.com/2022/film/box-office/box-office-lightyear-disappoints-1235298248/ Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ Underwhelms With $51 Million Debut as ‘Jurassic World’ Stays No. 1 To infinity and beyond? Not exactly… “Lightyear,” a spinoff story set in Pixar’s “Toy Story” universe, fell short of that boundless milestone in its box office debut, collecting a lackluster $51 million from 4,255 North American theaters. Family audiences, the movie’s prime demographic, haven’t returned to theaters in full force since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even so, those ticket sales are disappointing for a brand as recognizable as Pixar, the home of “The Incredibles,” “Finding Nemo” and “Up.” It’s particularly problematic given that “Lightyear” cost $200 million to produce and tens of millions more to market. Heading into the weekend, the Disney film was expected to generate at least $70 million. But its ambitions were thwarted by heightened competition from Universal’s behemoth “Jurassic World Dominion” and Paramount’s high-flying “Top Gun: Maverick,” as well as little intrigue to watch a slightly esoteric origin story about Buzz Lightyear, one that had only a tenuous connection to the four films in the popular kid-friendly franchise. With its wobbly liftoff, “Lightyear” landed in second place, becoming one of the rare Pixar films to not take the top spot at the domestic box office. Internationally, “Lightyear” earned $34.6 million from 43 markets, taking its global total to $85.6 million. The movie was banned in smaller foreign markets, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, because it depicts a same-sex kiss. Notably, “Lightyear” is the first Pixar movie to play on the big screen in more than two years — since “Onward” in March 2020. During the pandemic, three of the animation studio’s titles — “Soul,” “Luca” and “Turning Red” — skipped theaters to land directly on Disney+, leaving some box office analyst to question if consumers have been trained to watch Pixar movies at home. Other industry experts question if Disney is relying too heavily on brand recognition and not enough on execution. It’s not that people disliked the movie, which landed an “A-” CinemaScore and 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. But Disney certainly hoped that more ticket buyers would feel compelled to see “Lightyear” in theaters over the weekend. Believe me, I would have loved to see this movie. I mean, Toy Story was a part of my child-hood growing up, so it really pained me to see the headlines that they were going to force a gay kiss into the movie… based on that, I, and many of the people I’ve spoken with, refused to see the movie, as I’m sure all of our audience would agree. Even with a colossal 60% decline, “Jurassic World Dominion” managed to capture the box office crown again in a surprise upset. Universal’s prehistoric sequel generated $58.6 million from 4,697 cinemas in its second weekend of release, bringing its domestic total to $259 million. In third place, “Top Gun: Maverick” keeps flying high with a mammoth $44 million from 4,035 venues in North America, marking a scant 15% drop from last weekend. You know what those two shows have in common? They just tried to entertain the audience… not educate, or force satanic themes upon us. Speaking of education… Classical Conversations Classical Conversations supports homeschooling parents by cultivating the love of learning through a Christian worldview in fellowship with other families. Finally, let’s end today’s news brief, with a stroll down on this day in history! Jaws Theme Song - Play 1:07-1:18 Iconic! Anything directed by the great John Williams is just amazing… On June 20th, 1975, Jaws, a film directed by Steven Spielberg that made countless viewers afraid to go into the water, opens in theaters. The story of a great white shark that terrorizes a New England resort town became an instant blockbuster and the highest-grossing film in movie history until it was bested by 1977’s Star Wars. Jaws was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category and took home three Oscars, for Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound. The film, a breakthrough for director Spielberg, then 27 years old, spawned several sequels. The film starred Roy Scheider as principled police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as a marine biologist named Matt Hooper and Robert Shaw as a grizzled fisherman called Quint. It was set in the fictional beach town of Amity, and based on a best-selling novel, released in 1973, by Peter Benchley. Subsequent water-themed Benchley bestsellers also made it to the big screen, including The Deep (1977). With a budget of $12 million, Jaws was produced by the team of Richard Zanuck and David Brown, whose later credits include The Verdict (1982), Cocoon (1985) and Driving Miss Daisy (1989). Filming, which took place on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, was plagued by delays and technical difficulties, including malfunctioning mechanical sharks. Jaws put now-famed director Steven Spielberg on the Hollywood map. Spielberg, largely self-taught in filmmaking, made his major feature-length directorial debut with The Sugarland Express in 1974. The film was critically well-received but a box-office flop. Following the success of Jaws, Spielberg went on to become one of the most influential, iconic directors in the film world, with such epics as Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), ET: the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Schindler’s List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). E.T., Jaws and Jurassic Park rank among the highest-grossing movies of all time. This has been your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief. Hey you mother sluggers, you're gonna need a bigger boat. We're not messing around on this one, danger has never been more imminent. There's a monster on the loose, and there is blood in the water. We've never seen a shark like this around Amity and the citizens don't know what to do. Chrissie Watkins, the Kintner boy, and Ben Gardner have already been killed, and we will never forget Pippet the dog! After a frantic hunt for this great white, there appears to be only one option left… hire Quint to kill the shark. He is reluctant, but will be joined by our own chief of police, Martin Brody and shark expert Matt Hooper. They are headed out to sea this morning, and the scared people of Amity can only pray they catch and kill this shark.
Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast! Our guest on this episode of the podcast is Doctor Gregory Skomal. Greg is an accomplished marine biologist, underwater explorer, photographer, aquarist, and author. He has been a fisheries biologist with Massachusetts Marine Fisheries since 1987 and currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program (MSRP). He holds a master's degree from the University of Rhode Island and a PhD from Boston University. Greg is a perfect example of someone having a dream and persisting to make it a reality. As a young boy, after the release of the movie Jaws in 1975, he aspired to become the well known fictitious marine biologist and shark scientist Matt Hooper...and that is exactly what happened. For more than 35 years Greg has been one of the most renowned marine biologists and shark scientists in the world.Greg has been actively involved in the study of life history, ecology, and physiology of sharks. His shark research has spanned multiple fish habitats around the globe; from the frigid waters of the Arctic Circle to coral reefs in the tropical Central Pacific. In recent years, Greg has become the face of all things shark-related on Cape Cod. Skomal and his associate, John Chisholm, were the first to successfully tag and track great whites in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean using high-tech tags through the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. The organization now has the ability to track local and long-range movements, study behavior and biology, and estimate population size of great whites in the area. Since Greg began tagging white sharks in Cape Cod and MA, he and his crew have tagged over 280 white sharks. We have been fortunate to know Greg since we were kids, and we have always admired his passion and knowledge for the ocean. Continuing from our last episode, today's episode of Aligned is the second half of Sean's conversation with Taylor on storytelling. Check out the episode to learn how you, as a business executive or marketer, can implement storytelling best practices into your business. (And be sure to check out the previous episode for the entire conversation.) What's one thing people miss when trying to tell stories? In a marketing context, it's a lack of identifying who “the hero” of your story is and the stakes that drive the story forward. People in marketing are scared to show the negative. But that can remove the impact of a story. Great stories always end with some form of transformation. The catalyst of the change is what your story is about. Taylor's top pick for storytelling inspiration: Taylor loves Jaws because of the movie and his experience with the film itself. As a child, he found Jaws terrifying but intriguing. And now, as an adult, he remembers the fear the movie once instilled in him. The movie's filming was riddled with problems, so the ingenuity that arose from desperation made some of the most iconic cinematic scenes of all time. In Jaws, the external problem is the huge shark killing people (that's pretty obvious.) But the internal problem is Matt Hooper. He's new to town, his family doesn't want to be there, and he tries to find his place in the community. The story of Jaws is about Hooper finding his place while also dealing with the external problem. Dealing with constrained budgets of nonprofits, churches and ministries: What Taylor's grandmother says is true: you get what you pay for. But you have to be careful what you pay for. Hire the right people who understand who you are and what drives your organization. Some businesses just can't afford professional filmmakers. Taylor dislikes when organizations request professional services with the caveat of, “we're a ministry; you should do things differently.” There's value in storytelling to achieve a purpose. But there is also value in storytelling purely for the aesthetic. Taylor recommends the book Angels in the Architecture. From an aesthetic standpoint, filmmakers and storytellers must operate at the highest level possible. The act of storytelling in marketing is about helping communicate to somebody why they should choose to assign their limited resources to you and your product or service. The foundation of why you should pay more for an aesthetic: beautiful things are effective things. Beautiful things are effective things. Nothing else in marketing has the complexity or capacity to reach, touch, and affect other human beings. More than ever, people can tell when something looks cheap or isn't very good. So why would you ever create something that wasn't going to be as good as you could afford it to be? In post-production, the beauty of powerful storytelling is removing the extraneous components to create the greatest impact with the least material possible. This episode is an insight into the journey 3 friends took in October 2021 – Matt Hooper, Pete Gardner and Rich Martin. With decades of friendship in the bank, we decided to call each other on a WhatsApp call every day for 30 days and confess our sins to each other. We wanted to see what would happen – we had all read and heard about other people doing something similar, we all had a desire to be more open and transparent but none of us had ever done a 30-day journey like this before. We essentially wanted to see the scripture James 5:16 in action: James 5:16 (NIV) Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. It's honest, raw, and was really good fun to produce! I hope it helps you in your journey. Continuing from our last episode, today's episode of Aligned features another conversation with Taylor on storytelling. Check out the episode to learn how you, as a business executive or marketer, can implement storytelling best practices into your business. What's one thing people miss when trying to tell stories? He's new to town, his family doesn't want to be there, and he tries to find his place in the community. The story of Jaws is about Hooper finding his place while also dealing with the external problem. Storytelling is very powerful for faith-based organizations Taylor uses his creative talents to work on projects he's passionate about. As a Christian, he enjoys working on projects close to his heart Storytelling isn't something that we use; it's something God gave to us. God designed the craft of storytelling to bring glory and honor to himself while advancing the gospel. God didn't just create the concrete world. He created how we understand the world. Storytelling is the only non-biological thing all humans share. Across all of history, the one thing we share is the ability to understand and tell stories. The Bible is the greatest story ever told. The four secret ingredients to storytelling are transformation, vulnerability, details, and stakes. The Bible excels in integrating all of these elements. Details: The story of Christ is incredibly long and detailed. Vulnerability: God humbled himself and took on the form of a human and offered himself up for sacrifice for our sins, which is very vulnerable. Humans are sinners in need of a Savior; we're in a vulnerable place because there's nothing we could do to redeem ourselves. Stakes: The stakes are the eternal life of civilization (it really can't get more significant than that.) We think about the Bible regarding its theological implications, but it's also the archetype of perfect storytelling. Telling a biblical story: People will take passages from the Bible out of context to justify and rationalize any belief or decision. It's essential as storytellers and filmmakers to realize, as we're conveying scripture to people, that claiming scripture as true is powerful. Don't take things at face value; take God's truth that he has made clear throughout the Bible. Dealing with constrained budgets of nonprofits, churches and ministries: What Taylor's grandmother says is true: you get what you pay for. But you have to be careful what you pay for. Hire the right people who understand who you are and what your organization is about. Some businesses just can't afford professional filmmakers. On May 6th, 1981, at the MIT Endicott House, a group of computer scientists gathered together with elite physicists to make the case that quantum phenomena could be used for computation. Here, ideas that would influence the next four decades of quantum computing research and development first took root, as a new wave of interdisciplinarians asked themselves: what lies beyond the 0's and 1's? In other words, if classical computing represented binary calculations, how could quantum computing represent calculations using the math of the universe? Sebastian Hassinger (IBM Quantum Research and Ecosystem Partnerships), and Abraham Asfaw (Global Lead, Quantum Education and Open Science at IBM Quantum) join host Matt Hooper in conversation with historian Susannah Glickman to learn about the forces and figures that transformed quantum information theory from a literal back-of-the-napkin idea into the next wave of computing. Credits: Co-created and co-hosted by Sebastian Hassinger and Abraham Asfaw. Produced, written, co-hosted and edited by Matt Hooper. Special thanks to the entire IBM Quantum team.
When we set out to produce this series, there was one name we heard more frequently than any other: Charlie Bennett. Charlie is one of the founding fathers of quantum information theory; a physicist, an information theorist, and an IBM Fellow; the photographer behind the famous picture captured at the Endicott House conference 40 years ago; and a visionary without whom we would be staring down a very different quantum future. Sebastian, Abe and Matt sit down for a conversation with Charlie about the rise of reversible computing, the limits of anthropocentrism in quantum information science, and the importance of broadening peoples' intuition in order to bring about seismic change. Credits: Co-created and co-hosted by Sebastian Hassinger and Abraham Asfaw. Produced, written, co-hosted and edited by Matt Hooper. Special thanks to the entire IBM Quantum team.
Real quantum computers are here, but they are small and noisy, and not fully mature. Be that as it may Professor Prineha Narang of Harvard is finding ways to use IBM's open-source quantum platforms to do useful things like simulation and probing the limits of what is possible right now. Additionally, she is pioneering ‘Quantum Entanglement as a Service' via her startup, Aliro, a software company whose goal is to democratize access to quantum computing. Join Sebastian and Matt as they chat with Prineha about her own quantum journey, the power and problems of quantum noise, and the development of both her class and business. Credits: Co-created and co-hosted by Sebastian Hassinger and Abraham Asfaw. Produced, written, co-hosted and edited by Matt Hooper. Special thanks to the entire IBM Quantum team.
Sometimes, you just want to experience a very large dilution refrigerator in action. And that's exactly what this episode delivers! Join Sebastian, Abe and Matt as they chat with Pat Gumann (Manager of Quantum Processor and System Integration, Quantum Computing at IBM) and Jay Gambetta (IBM Fellow and Vice President, Quantum Computing at IBM), about how the quantum field became a quantum industry, and the technical challenges of using a superconducting platform to build qubits. Credits: Co-created and co-hosted by Sebastian Hassinger and Abraham Asfaw. Produced, written, co-hosted and edited by Matt Hooper. Special thanks to the entire IBM Quantum team.
We've often referenced the cross-disciplinary nature of the quantum computing field. Nowhere is that clearer than in the stories of three of our guests, each of whom are professors at esteemed universities, and each of whom are propelling the field forward. Margaret Martonosi, the head of the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the National Science Foundation and a Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University; Tina Brower-Thomas, Principal Investigator for Integrated Quantum Materials and Director for the Integration for the NSF at Howard University; and Ken Brown, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Join Sebastian, Abe and Matt as they sit down with each of these QC leaders to discuss the downturn in quantum funding in the early 2000's, the trapped ion vs superconducting debate, and the opportunity to build a more inclusive workforce in the 2020's. Credits: Co-created and co-hosted by Sebastian Hassinger and Abraham Asfaw. Produced, written, co-hosted and edited by Matt Hooper. Special thanks to the entire IBM Quantum team.
In the mid-90's, there was no quantum computing field. There was excitement, sure, but nearly a decade and a half after the conference at MIT Endicott House, the possibilities of marrying physics and computer science had yet to yield a significant technological breakthrough. That is, until Peter Shor discovered a way to break RSA, the most famous public-key cryptosystem. Shor's Algorithm was more than a call to action for a generation of scientists, it was a glimpse of how much faster a quantum machine would be able to crack even the most complex encryption scheme. Sebastian, Abe and Matt sit down with Peter Shor to discuss the discovery of the algorithm, the extraordinary response his work received twenty-five years ago, and what's next for ensuing generations of scientists and information theorists. Credits: Co-created and co-hosted by Sebastian Hassinger and Abraham Asfaw. Produced, written, co-hosted and edited by Matt Hooper. Special thanks to the entire IBM Quantum team.

By 1974, Steven Spielberg had just released his first feature length film and Peter Benchley published his first novel. Little did these two rookies know that they would combine to make one of the most famous movies of all time. What started off as an idea about a fish, turned into a New York Times bestseller and an Academy-Award winning film. Jaws tells the story of small-town police chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider). When he is confronted by a string of shark attacks, he must recruit the marine biologist Matt Hooper (played by Richard Dryfeuss) and the grizzled shark hunter Quint (played by Robert Shaw) to hunt down and destroy the beast. While the story of Jaws has become engrained into our modern Pop-culture, the story of how the book became a movie has become the stuff of Hollywood legend. The over-blown schedule. The doubled budget. The hair-pulling decision to shoot the film on the REAL Atlantic Ocean. And of course, to top it off, the main star of the show, the shark, would not work. It is from this tattered production that the titan known as Steven Spielberg was born as he had to craft a movie that was in a lot of trouble without the main "star". Listen along as I dive into the behind the scenes story of how Jaws became a film. How was the film different than the book? What was the USS Indianapolis? Why was the shark not working a blessing instead of a curse?Tune in to find out!!Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcast/id1526950957 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RLQAkNzaWQoVBLBZITNSCYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRxehtzRCZ4qjfLTMDIClbw/Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-347499519hGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy8zMDExNGVmYy9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw?sa=X&ved=0CAIQ4aUDahcKEwjol9z975HrAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQBQStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-movie-commentary-podcastiHeart Radio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1248-the-movie-commentary-podc-71326635/Instagram/Facebook: @themoviecommentarypodcast
