That's what needs to be healed. That's what needs to be explored. That's what needs to be understood… so we don't have to be these reactive parents who probably, I would say 100% of them, at the end of the day feel guilty and feel bad about it.” “The surgeon General re-released a report at the end of 2024 and said that parenting is bad for your mental health. We are in a serious crisis for parental mental health.” “Children don't just learn off of what we say to them, but they are actually primarily learning based off of what they see in us.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Bryana's Website: Conscious Mommy Join The Conscious Mommy Community HERE! The best-selling author Russell Shorto, praised for his incisive works of narrative history, never thought to write about his own past. He grew up knowing his grandfather and namesake was a small-town mob boss but maintained an unspoken family vow of silence. Then an elderly relative prodded: You're a writer―what are you gonna do about the story? Smalltime is a mob story straight out of central casting―but with a difference, for the small-town mob, which stretched from Schenectady to Fresno, is a mostly unknown world. The location is the brawny postwar factory town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The setting is City Cigar, a storefront next to City Hall, behind which Russ and his brother-in-law, “Little Joe,” operate a gambling empire and effectively run the town. Smalltime is a riveting American immigrant story that travels back to Risorgimento Sicily, to the ancient, dusty, hill-town home of Antonino Sciotto, the author's great-grandfather, who leaves his wife and children in grinding poverty for a new life―and wife―in a Pennsylvania mining town. It's a tale of Italian Americans living in squalor and prejudice, and of the rise of Russ, who, like thousands of other young men, created a copy of the American establishment that excluded him. Smalltimedraws an intimate portrait of a mobster and his wife, sudden riches, and the toll a lawless life takes on one family. 1889 Johnstown Flood

One of The Cut's parenting columnists and official friend-of-the-pod, Amil Niazi, joins us to talk about her recent essay on weaning her kids off YouTube. We've covered screen time, but this time we're talking about algorithmic content. Is the algorithm as unavoidable as it feels to many of us? Or is it worth it for parents to push back — even when it makes for some awkward moments with other families — and try to hold out as long as they can? If your kids are already hooked on YouTube, like Amil's were, is there a way to reign it in without a dreaded, endless household meltdown? And if you do manage to kick the algo out of your home, and come out as a non-YouTube family, is the grass really greener? Plus, Sarah and Miranda on “life's hack” (life's ONE hack), the very corporeal fascinations of switching to menstrual cups, first periods, and what it feels like to finally be deeply learning about our menstrual cycles in our 40s. * My Family's YouTube Ban by Amil Niazi (The Cut) * The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt* If Books Could Kill review of The Anxious Generation* The Fun Cup* My Son's Favorite Toy Is A Tampon by Sarah (Scary Mommy)* Babeland * Period: The Real Story of Menstruation by Kate Clancy* 28-ish Days Later BBC Podcast * Second Life by Amanda Hess (episode coming soon!) * Teens, Social Media and Technology 2023 (Pew Research Report). “Roughly nine-in-ten teens say they use YouTube, making it the most widely used platform measured in our survey.”* Meta (Facebook & Instagram & WhatsApp parent company) is not going to moderate content anymore. After 163 episodes, The Murder in My Family is coming to a close. A note from show Creator and host Mike Morford: "I stepped away from hosting duties in 2024 but continued to produce the show. Host Eric Cater-Landin took over hosting duties, but due to personal reasons, had to step away from the podcast. At this point, after careful consideration, I have decided to end the show. It's been my honor to create this show and provide a platform to families of the murdered, to discuss their loved one's case, and how it affected them. Sometimes, in cases that were still unsolved, we were able to shine a light on the case to help generate tips and leads, in an effort to help see resolution. In some solved cases we've covered, we heard from families who had received justice for their loved one, but were not fighting to keep their killer behind bars. Thank you to the dozens of families who trusted me, and have shared your stories with me, and our listeners. I hope that I was able to present your story in the most respectful and accurate way possible. And to the listeners; Thank you for supporting not just the show, but for also supporting the guests that we had on who opened up to us about something so tragic and personal. All my best, Mike Morford" Please stay subscribed to The Murder in My Family on your favorite player or app, so that you can get updates on other podcasts you may be interested in as well as new shows from the AbJack Network of shows.

Episode 164 Loretta Benaderet Case Update In this episode of The Murder in My Family, host Eric Carter-Landin discusses the heartbreaking story of Loretta Benaderet, a 76-year-old woman who was killed by her own son, David, in a 2014 murder-suicide. As the layers of this tragic case are peeled back, we learn about a long history of mental illness, abuse, and denial that ultimately led to this devastating outcome.
