Andy Stumpf is a retired Navy SEAL, world-record-holding wingsuit BASE jumper, martial artist, and author. We discuss the mental framework and moment-to-moment decision-making process that can allow anyone to build discipline and resilience and better navigate both everyday life and life's most challenging moments. Andy explains several simple-yet-powerful tools gleaned from his time in — and after — his SEAL career that can help you determine where to focus your actions and how to clear your mind of things you can't control or that hold you back mentally. Andy also shares and reflects on lessons learned from some of the deeply personal challenges he faced outside of combat and freefall. Finally, we explore the all-too-frequent tragedy of people — including high performers — taking their own lives, and consider what might be done to prevent more such losses. What if one simple shift in your language could change the direction of your life? In this episode of the Direct Selling Accelerator Podcast, I share how developing courage, confidence, and changing the way I spoke to myself changed the trajectory of my life. We dive into the power of shifting from "I will" to "I am," and why the biggest breakthroughs don't come from giant leaps, but from the small, intentional one-degree shifts we make every day. From running a half-marathon I once thought was impossible to finding the courage to write and publish my book, Show Up Anyway, I've learned that courage isn't something we're born with - it's something we build. Every time we take the next step despite fear or uncertainty, our courage grows. And as courage grows, confidence follows. Perhaps you've been carrying a big, hairy, audacious goal for a while now.. but for one reason or another you haven't fully stepped into it yet. As you listen to this episode, I hope you're encouraged, challenged, and reminded that courage isn't about having it all figured out - it's about taking the next step anyway. If you've ever ground away on a treadmill and wondered why the scale won't budge, this episode is for you. Lisa Oldson, MD breaks down one of the most persistent myths in weight loss culture: that exercise is the key to getting thinner. Decades of research say otherwise, and understanding why is one of the most liberating things you can do for your relationship with movement. In this episode you'll learn why exercise triggers metabolic compensation (your body is smarter than any fitness tracker), what Herman Pontzer's landmark research on the Hadza people of Tanzania revealed about calorie burn and physical activity, and why even marathon training rarely produces significant weight loss. You'll also learn why exercise IS one of the most powerful predictors of long-term weight maintenance once the weight is lost, and why that distinction matters enormously.Dr. Lisa also covers the surprisingly robust evidence linking regular movement to depression, anxiety, and stress relief. This includes research showing that exercise can be as effective as antidepressants and therapy for some people. She also walks through the behavioral science of actually building a habit that sticks, covering the Stages of Change, Self-Determination Theory, identity-based habits, and why motivation is the wrong thing to chase. Thanks for listening! We talk to ourselves all day long—often without even realizing it. And while we may not be able to turn off the constant chatter happening inside our minds, we can learn to change the conversation. In this episode, author and Moody Radio host Jon Gauger shares how self-talk can be either destructive or redemptive, depending on whether you speak lies or biblical truth to yourself. So today, Jon will teach you how to identify the lies you're believing, replace them with Scripture, and invite God to renew your thinking. You'll also hear practical ways to memorize Scripture, why the Psalms are such a powerful place to start, and how speaking truth to your soul can bring peace, patience, and hope into your everyday life. Plus, Jon offers a FREE download to help you shift gears in your mind and hide God's Word in your heart. SHOW NOTES: 413Podcast.com/406 Read the episode TRANSCRIPT in the show notes. Lu spent most of her life as a great sleeper. Then, six weeks after having her first baby, a painful mix of pressure, anxiety, and one sleepless night made sleep feel difficult for the first time. Over the years, insomnia came and went. Medication helped her through some difficult periods, but Lu still felt stuck and afraid of the part of herself that struggled at night. In this episode, Lu shares how self-compassion, a more workable response to wakefulness, and adding meaningful actions back into her days helped her build trust in herself again — and allowed her to emerge from the insomnia struggle as a stronger, more confident, and more resilient person.

Have you ever noticed how your Apple Watch pushes you to “close your rings” no matter what kind of day you’re having? It’s always about hitting the goal, finishing the task, and sometimes leaving no room for hard days, stress, or life’s natural fluctuations. Now, compare that to the Oura Ring, which considers your context—how much sleep you got, your stress levels, and even suggests you prioritize rest on tougher days. Heather Creekmore unpacks how we often treat ourselves like the Apple Watch: driven by rigid self-imposed goals, little room for compassion, and a tendency toward self-condemnation. But what if we learned to treat ourselves more like the Oura Ring suggests—meeting ourselves with curiosity, grace, and wisdom, adjusting our expectations based on the real demands and needs of our current season? (Never heard of an Oura ring? Learn more about this wearable tech here.) Key Takeaways Apple Watch Mindset: Rigid, goal-oriented, and often uncompassionate to your context. "Did you do enough? Did you close the ring? No nuance, no compassion." Oura Ring Mindset: Flexible, understanding, and grace-filled, adjusting expectations based on your needs. "Prioritize rest today. Choose recovery. No pressure to hit goals when your body needs rest." God’s Model of Grace: God knows your challenges, your grief, your exhaustion. He offers relationship, not a scoreboard. "God doesn’t demand summer fruit in the middle of winter." Stewardship over Shame: True body stewardship is about wisdom and listening, not punishment or fear. Application Questions: Are your habits more about accusation or invitation? Is your wellness rooted in fear, or joyful stewardship? Reflect and Apply If you struggle with self-condemnation, perfectionism, or feeling like you have to constantly “close the rings” of your life, consider: Adopting a mindset of grace over rigid self-judgment—and being more like an Oura Ring to yourself Listening to your body and spirit, honoring seasons of rest as much as seasons of work Asking, “What does loving stewardship look like for me today—given THIS body, THIS energy, and THIS season?” Remember: Your worth is not determined by a closed ring or a perfect scoreboard, but by the loving Creator who knows every detail of your life. Share the Grace! Loved this episode? Share it with a friend who could use some grace today. Be encouraged to stop comparing and start living! What if the key to a healthier tomorrow started tonight? In this episode, Lisa Oldson, MD shares a simple but powerful idea inspired by a New York Times quote: "The day starts the night before." If you've ever found yourself making impulsive food choices, skipping workouts because the day got away from you, or staying up too late scrolling your phone, this episode is for you.Dr. Lisa breaks down why preparation, not willpower, is the real driver of healthy habits, and she draws on wisdom from productivity experts David Allen (Getting Things Done), Stephen Covey (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People), and behavioral scientist BJ Fogg (Tiny Habits) to make the case that small, consistent evening efforts create outsized results.Whether your goal is weight loss, lower cholesterol, better health, or longevity, you'll walk away with a practical, five-point evening checklist designed to reduce impulsive eating, protect your sleep, and help you show up for yourself every single day, no elaborate meal prep required. Thanks for listening! Have you ever noticed how a song can instantly change your mood? In this clip, I'm exploring how sound and vibration might influence the body, including stress responses and the way we experience emotions day to day. This clip explores the idea of the body as a “tuning fork”, where music, voice, and environmental frequency may affect us at a cellular level, including through fascia. We also look at visual examples of water and sand responding to specific frequencies and how that connects to the wider conversation about vibration, emotion, and why some people feel others' energy when they enter a room. But could they also be quietly protecting your brain from addiction? In this episode, Lisa Oldson, MD breaks down a landmark new study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, the largest real-world analysis of its kind, which found that people taking GLP-1 medications were dramatically less likely to develop alcohol, opioid, nicotine, and cocaine use disorders. In this conversation, Lawrence Joss and psychologist Faust Ruggiero explore the trauma responses many alienated parents experience while navigating parental alienation, estrangement, and high-conflict family systems. Together, they unpack how chronic stress, fear, hypervigilance, and unresolved grief affect the nervous system—and why many parents begin living in a constant state of emotional and physical survival.Blending clinical insight with lived experience, the discussion examines PTSD, nervous system dysregulation, emotional overwhelm, and the physical symptoms that often go unnoticed during alienation. Lawrence reflects on his own reconnection journey and the challenge of teaching the body to recognize safety again, even during positive moments. Grounded in recovery, self-awareness, and emotional regulation, this conversation reminds us that healing is not about becoming emotionless—it's about slowly coming home to yourself. Living fully is not giving up, but an act of love and integrity.Key Takeaways• PTSD changes how the body responds • Family dysfunction shapes trauma responses • Hypervigilance becomes a survival pattern • Emotional stress creates physical symptoms • Internal self-talk affects nervous system healing • Trauma distorts safety and emotional trust • Chronic alienation impacts mind and body • Healing requires emotional and physical awareness • Grounding practices support nervous system recovery • Self-regulation helps restore inner stabilityChapters00:00 - Understanding PTSD Beyond the Mind 04:53 - How Family Systems Shape Trauma 10:06 - Why the Body Holds Trauma 14:55 - Self-Talk and Nervous System Healing 20:07 - Balancing Emotional Reactions with Reality 24:53 - The Long-Term Impact of VictimizationSupport & Community:Parental Alienation Anonymous (PAA): Join our free 12-step support group with 16 online meetings weekly for parents, grandparents, family members, and previously alienated individuals seeking healing and recovery.PA-A.org: Parental Alienation Advocates is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to fostering education, advocacy, and support for individuals grappling with the distressing impact of parental alienation, estrangement, erasure, and family disconnection. All our services are free and sustained by grants and community donations. Strap on your dangerous trousers because it is game time for your mindset. We are diving back into the world of self-talk to give you the actual meat on the bones: a plug-and-play template for building your own "all-purpose, broad-spectrum script for better living." Whether you are trying to master Russian, control your diet, or negotiate ten grand off a new motor, the way you talk to yourself determines if you knock it out of the park or stay stuck in a rut. We break down the three essential formats—from the deep-dive long form to the two-second "instant" pattern interrupter—so you can stop unhelpful thoughts dead in their tracks. It is time to swap the "I can't" for a compelling "I am always improving," and start seeing real-world results in your tutoring, teaching, or coaching business. Key Takeaways The Long-Form script should be read aloud every morning and night to prime your brain for progress and prepare you to meet the day. Always use current and ongoing language like "I am always" or "I am improving" to presume progress and make your self-talk compelling. Short-form scripts are perfect for "pattern interrupts" when walking into meetings or properties to remind yourself that you are in control. An Instant Script can be as short as two words, such as "I'm winning," to act as a brief reminder during high-stress pauses. Writing your scripts out longhand is highly recommended before typing or printing them to ensure the concepts really stick. Quotes "If I rely on my own tiny pea-sized brain to solve all my problems, then I'm in serious trouble." "Identify who you're speaking to. And what you're saying about yourself. Use the I am." "Refuse to make exceptions. I'm always. I'm unfailingly. I'm consistently." "You walk in with that script running in mind. You're going to be ready to knock it out of the park." "Strap on your dangerous trousers and get it done. Because it's game time." What if the reason you keep falling off track has nothing to do with willpower, discipline, or the right diet plan, and everything to do with how you see yourself? In this episode, Lisa Oldson, MD draws on James Clear's Atomic Habits, Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck's research on the growth mindset, and Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer's Progress Principle to make the case for identity-based change. The goal isn't to lose weight. The goal is to become someone who prioritizes her health, because it turns out that shift changes everything. You'll learn why outcome-based goals eventually run out of fuel, how every small healthy choice is quietly building (or undermining) your self-image, and why becoming a healthy person absolutely does not require being a perfect one.Plus: a simple NBA (Next Best Action) to try today that takes about 30 seconds and might stick with you for years. If you keep telling yourself “I don't have enough time,” or "I should have finished this before," I want you to hear this: that thought might be the very thing keeping you stuck. In this episode, I'm doing something a little different. I'm taking you inside a real, unpolished coaching conversation where we break down what's actually happening when you feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unable to follow through. Because here's what I see all the time… You go to organize something simple like a drawer, your calendar, or your task list… and suddenly it feels like too much. You second-guess your decisions. You run away. And by the end of the day, you've “proven” to yourself that you didn't have enough time. But that result didn't come from your circumstances. It came from your thinking. This episode will help you see, in real time, how your self-talk is shaping your actions and results, and what to do instead. And I'll be honest… this isn't perfectly polished coaching. It's real, in-the-moment thinking. But that's exactly why I wanted you to hear it. Because once you recognize these patterns in yourself, everything about how you approach organization can change. What You'll Learn: Why “I don't have enough time” is a thought, not a fact How your self-talk creates overwhelm, procrastination, and disorganization The difference between an overwhelmed person and a decisive, organized one What more productive self-talk looks like The simple mindset shift that helps you follow through and finish what you start
In this Growth Spurt, Anthony Alibro breaks down a simple but powerful mental shift: third-person self-talk. By replacing "I am overwhelmed" with "(your name) is overwhelmed," you create psychological distance that reduces emotional intensity and sharpens decision-making. This subtle language tweak can help you regulate stress, think more clearly, and respond like you would for a friend, especially in those high-pressure moments.
Self-distancing is a way to better self-differentiate in anxious situations. This episode explains what that is and how to do it.Show Notes:Distanced self-talk changes how people conceptualize the self by Izzy Gainsburg and Ethan CrossCheck out The Non-Anxious Life, a FREE AI Family Systems Coach.Become a Patron for as little as $5/month.Subscribe to my weekly Two for Tuesday email newsletter.
If you've ever felt like you're just going through the motions of life… this episode is for you. On the outside, everything might look good. You're doing what you're “supposed” to do. But internally, something feels off. Like you're not fully in your life. In this episode of The Balance Theory, Erika sits down with psychologist Dr Louise Lambert to explore why so many of us feel disconnected from our own lives and what actually helps you feel like you're living again. This conversation goes beyond surface-level advice. It dives into what the science says about happiness, why simply “fixing problems” isn't enough, and how to shift from just functioning… to truly feeling your life. If you've been craving more presence, more meaning, or just a deeper connection to your everyday life, this will give you a completely new perspective. What We Cover: * Why you can feel “fine”… but still feel disconnected from your life * The concept of “languishing” and why so many people are stuck there * Why focusing on the past isn't the key to a better present * The 3 types of people: which one you are and what to do about it * What the science actually says about happiness (and what we get wrong) * Does more success, money, or discipline lead to happier lives? * A simple way to reconnect with meaning and purpose in your life * The difference between positive thinking and useful thinking * Practical ways to shift out of autopilot and feel more present You don't need to overhaul your life to feel better, you need to change how you experience it. Send us Fan MailThere is a story running quietly in the background of your parenting. You may not even know it's there. But it's shaping everything — how you respond in hard moments, how you recover from mistakes, and what you believe you're capable of as a mom.For the mom overwhelmed by self-criticism and parenting anxiety — this episode gets underneath both.As a resilient mom, you're not broken. You're running an old story that was written before you even had a choice about it. I walk you through where that story came from, how early messages became automatic beliefs, and how those beliefs are showing up in your parenting right now in ways you may not have recognized. We look at the research on narrative identity, growth mindset, and the neuroscience of how changing your self-talk actually rewires what your brain predicts. Because emotional regulation for moms and parenting mindset work start in the same place — the voice inside your head.Mom burnout often starts not with doing too much — but with believing the wrong story about yourself. And nervous system regulation becomes possible when you change the narrative your brain is running on.I'll give you three concrete steps to start rewriting your story this week — because calm parenting starts inside. And you can do this.If you'd like to get the show notes for this episode, head to: https://leighgermann.com
Comparison is the one emotion everybody feels and nobody admits to — and Barb Schmidt and Michelle Maros of Life Happens with Barb & Michelle were scared to record this episode for a reason. In this raw, unfiltered conversation, they unpack the jealousy, resentment, and quiet self-destruction that comparison leaves behind — and make a case that might surprise you by the end. From Michelle comparing her book sales to her friends' mid-tour, to Barb owning up to something she projected onto Michelle for years, this episode goes places most podcast conversations never do. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
In this episode, Larry opens the doors of a live Dad Edge Alliance Q&A featuring neuroscience expert and brain coach Ashleigh Di Lello. This is a rare look behind the curtain at what actually happens inside the Alliance — real men, real questions, and real breakthroughs in real time. Ashleigh was told she was going to die at 13. She learned to walk again three times. And when a catastrophic hip surgery in 2017 left her in chronic pain and facing the possibility of never walking again, she decided to stop trying to control her body and start studying her brain instead. What she discovered — and has since spent seven years coaching others through — is a comprehensive, neuroscience-based process for rewiring the patterns, beliefs, and self-critical voices that keep men stuck. The men in this Q&A ask the questions most of us never say out loud: how do I quiet the inner critic at 61? How do I build resilience when my business is falling apart? How do I help my perfectionist daughter without making it worse? And what does it actually mean to feel your emotions without losing your identity as a man? Ashleigh answers every one of them — and the conversation goes places you won't expect. Timeline Summary [0:00] Introduction to the Dad Edge mission and the movement to raise leaders of families and communities [1:02] The quiet, sinister nature of negative self-chatter — and why morning affirmations aren't enough [3:26] Ashleigh's story — told she would die at 13, three hip surgeries, learning to walk again, and turning it all into a neuroscience-based brain rewiring practice [5:13] Ashleigh opens the Q&A — the brain's mechanisms are the same for all of us and can become our greatest asset [8:20] Jason's question: 61 years old, raised to suppress feelings, bullied in school — how do I quiet the inner critic now? [10:35] You are not either strong or weak — you are both. The human experience is contrast. [12:15] Self-criticism locks up the neural synapses — why the brain cannot change long-term through shame [13:47] The writing exercise — ten minutes, throw it away, slow the brain down and finally hear yourself [16:26] Speaking to your brain instead of letting your brain speak to you — and why micro-action is what changes the operating system [19:40] Larry shares his own moment — sitting down after his interview with Ashleigh in tears, writing down every cruel thing he was telling himself [21:09] Chris's question: how does your process actually work from start to finish? [22:15] The 12-week process — identifying, processing out, then rewiring. You can't skip the first half. [23:43] What isn't expressed is suppressed — and the brain holds on to it [28:24] Why men are more prone to addiction — shame activates the brain's alarm system and it will always find an outlet [31:10] Scott's question: how do I build resilience under prolonged stress as an entrepreneur? [33:29] Resilience is not a character trait — it's a part of your brain you can grow [34:36] The win book — why you need a physical record of what's working, not just what isn't [36:07] When your identity gets attached to not pivoting — and how that keeps you stuck [40:27] Never make a big decision on a bad day — and give your brain real breaks from stimulation [42:24] Chris's question: I can already see perfectionist tendencies in my nine-year-old daughter — how do I help her? [43:38] Share your own struggles with your kids — it gives them permission to struggle too [45:18] Failure is not a noun — it's how we learn. And the brain can't learn through shame. [46:31] The win book applies to your kids too — build the evidence of progress, not just the list of what went wrong [49:08] Practice makes progress, not perfect — and what that means for how you raise your kids [51:38] Henry's question: how do men navigate the space between survival instincts and actually feeling their emotions? [52:23] It's not either or — it's and. Feeling doesn't eliminate strength. It creates space for more of it. [54:13] Let it out to bring it in — what isn't expressed will keep battling for space with everything you're trying to build Five Key Takeaways Self-criticism doesn't create lasting change. When you shame yourself, the neural synapses lock up. The brain can only rewire through self-compassion, not judgment. What isn't expressed is suppressed — and it doesn't go away. It stays in the brain and body, driving patterns you don't understand and can't seem to break. The writing exercise is one of the most neuroscience-backed tools available. Ten minutes, write what you'd never say out loud, and throw it away. You move it out so you can bring something better in. Resilience is a part of the brain you can grow — by doing what you don't want to do, acknowledging it when you do, and keeping a physical record of your wins. You are not either strong or weak. You are both. Allowing yourself to feel the full human experience doesn't diminish your strength — it creates space for more of it. Ashleigh Di Lello learned to rewire her brain not from a textbook but from necessity. She had no other option. And what she found on the other side was not just recovery — it was a life she built on purpose. The brain can change. You can change. But it starts with being honest enough to write it all down, compassionate enough to not judge what you find, and brave enough to let it move through you instead of holding it in. Go out and live legendary.

In this episode, Dr. Lisa shares an embarrassingly relatable Easter weekend story and walks you through her No Sweat, Reset Protocol. This compassionate, science-backed plan will help you get back on track after overeating or bingeing, without restriction, punishment, or shame. You'll learn why restricting after a binge makes cravings worse, what the dopamine crash after overeating does to your brain, and how to use psychologist Martin Seligman's optimistic explanatory style to stop the mean girl comments in their tracks. Plus: the 3-day reset eating plan, the harm mitigation mindset shift, and exactly what to eat right after getting off track. If you've ever felt derailed from your weight loss goals by a bad eating day and didn't know how to come back from it, this episode is for you. Thanks for listening! Beware of lifeless and dead theology. In this show Dr Ray talks about the difference between relationship and theology. It's important that you move beyond knowing about the Bible and understand that the author has paved the way for you to have a relationship with him. 1 Cor 2:4 -5 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.
