An exploration of the how and why altered states can come about and their possibilities. Here we look to what science can tell us and dispels the metaphysical haze that all too often surrounds the subject of altered states of consciousness. We discuss the research of parapsychology; the study psychic phenomena (extrasensory perception, telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, and psychometry) and other expereinces related to near-death experience and synchronicity.Dr. Charles T. Tart is known for work on the nature of consciousness & altered states, as a founder of transpersonal psychology & for research in scientific parapsychology. He has had more than 250 articles published in professional journals and books, including lead articles in such prestigious scientific journals as Science and Nature. His two classic books, Altered States of Consciousness (1969) and Transpersonal Psychologies (1975), were widely used texts that were instrumental in allowing these areas to become part of modern psychology. From the Archives: This live interview was recorded on March 19, 2001 on the nationally syndicated radio program, hosted by Laura Lee . https://waveform-particle-state.blogspot.com/ There have been several after death events in my life. The first one I can recall was about age 7 in 1945 a few years after my uncle was killed in the US Army as described in another blog post. The other events happened much more closely to the actual date of the death of a friend or family member and were just brief encounters such as a smell or an unexpected encounter with a bird. The first event that clearly changed my life is described below. The editor described below is Charles T. Tart, Ph.D. This article first appeared on his website, T.A.S.T.E., The Archives of Scientists' Transcendent Experiences.Anthony Chipoletti (real name) graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1980 with a BS degree that included training in Chemistry, Biology and Psychology. He was employed for a time in Pittsburgh in 1968 as a medical research technician in hematology and hemophilia research with Jessica Lewis, who discovered Factor VIII. Financial and family needs kept him from further graduate education and he was employed as a researcher in the media industry. Charles T. Tart is internationally known for his more than 50 years of research on the nature of consciousness, altered states of consciousness (ASCs) and parapsychology, and is one of the founders of the field of Transpersonal (spiritual) Psychology. His work convinced him that there is a real important sense in which we are spiritual beings, but the too dominant materialist philosophy of our times, masquerading as genuine science, denies any possible reality to the spiritual. Dr. Tart was born in 1937 and grew up in Trenton, New Jersey. He was active in ham radio (K2CFP), worked as a radio engineer (First Class Radiotelephone License) while still a teenager, and studied electrical engineering at MIT before deciding to become a psychologist. He received his Ph.D. in psychology, with research on influencing night time dreams by posthypnotic suggestions, from the University of North Carolina in 1963, and then received postdoctoral training in hypnosis research at Stanford. He is an Emeritus Professor, Core Faculty Member at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (Palo Alto,California) (a unique Ph.D. granting institution that believes you should educate a person’s body, spirit and emotions as well as their talking mind!) and Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the Davis campus of the University of California. He consulted on the original remote viewing research at Stanford Research Institute, where some of his work was important in influencing government policy makers against the deployment of the multi-billion dollar MX missile system. His most recent book, The End of Materialism: How Evidence of the Paranormal is Bringing Science and Spirit Together (2009), overviews his half century of research in parapsychology and shows that, as too many believe, it is not the case that science has somehow proven that all spirituality is nonsense. Rather it is reasonable, indeed necessary, to be both scientific and spiritual in one’s approach to life.. He has had more than 250 articles published in professional journals and books, including lead articles in such prestigious scientific journals as Science and Nature. We’re joined by Charles Tart, one of the founders of the branch of psychology known as transpersonal psychology. Dr. Tart’s life work has to do with putting forward an “evidence-based spirituality for the 21st century.” In this conversation we explore the evidence that he explored for phenomena like reincarnation, as well as the “big five” of telepathy, clairvoyance, pre-cognition, psychokinesis, and psychic healing. With all of these phenomena Charles warns about adopting a “scientistic”—as opposed to scientific—view of reality, which says that none of those things can be real, simply because they don’t fit into the mainstream view of materialism. Instead, he suggests, we should be looking at the evidence and letting it shape our understanding of reality. Episode Links: Charles T.
