My guest is Dr. Marina Weiler, a neuroscientist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies, also known as DOPS. DOPS is one of the few academic research units in the world dedicated to exploring questions at the very frontier of science and spirituality—questions like: What happens when we die? Does consciousness exist beyond the brain? And how do we rigorously study phenomena often dismissed as “paranormal”? With her background in medical sciences and neuroscience, Dr. Weiler brings both a skeptical eye and an open mind to this work. Together, we'll explore how DOPS approaches the scientific study of near-death and out-of-body experiences, the survival of consciousness after death, and even reported cases of reincarnation. This is a conversation that pushes us to the edge of what we know—and what we think we know—about mind, memory, and the mysteries of being human. Join us as we get rebelliously curious. What if everything you thought you knew about consciousness and the afterlife was about to be turned upside down? Join host Simon Bown on a riveting journey into the unknown in this episode of Our Paranormal Afterlife: Finding Proof of Life After Death, where we delve deep into the scientific evidence that suggests there may be more to our existence than meets the eye.In a captivating conversation with Stephen Hawley Martin, author of Afterlife: The Whole Truth, Second Edition, we explore groundbreaking insights from quantum physics and compelling documented phenomena, such as the extraordinary deathbed recoveries of individuals who seemed lost to consciousness. Martin presents a provocative argument that consciousness is not merely a byproduct of brain function but a non-material aspect of our reality, challenging long-held scientific beliefs. His personal anecdotes, including poignant moments with his grandmother before her passing, serve as powerful illustrations of the mysteries surrounding consciousness after death.Listeners will be fascinated as we discuss the pioneering research from the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies, which investigates near-death experiences and the intriguing accounts of children recalling past life memories. These insights into consciousness not only expand our understanding of life after death but also raise questions about the very nature of our existence. We also touch upon the captivating phenomena of psychokinesis and remote viewing, as well as transplant cases where recipients exhibit traits reminiscent of their donors, further blurring the lines between life and death. This episode of Our Paranormal Afterlife: Finding Proof of Life After Death is a must-listen for anyone interested in exploring the afterlife, as we unravel the layers of spirituality and health, alternative health perspectives, and the profound implications of personal near-death stories. Join us on this extraordinary journey into the paranormal as we seek evidence of the afterlife and share fascinating paranormal experiences that challenge our understanding of reality.BioBestselling author Stephen Hawley Martin has had a half dozen titles achieve bestseller status on Amazon.com and is the only three-time winner of the Writer's Digest Book Award, having won first prize twice for fiction and once for nonfiction. Patrick Belisle, Director of Philanthropy at the Hoffman Institute Foundation, is our guest today. A self-described practical mystic, Patrick embarked upon a spiritual journey that took him around the world and the country. In 2022, he participated in what he calls the pinnacle of his spiritual journey, the Hoffman Process. In this conversation with Drew, Patrick shares his unique perspective on money as “financial energy.” He explains how philanthropic giving is a win-win; a way to fulfill both parties' goals and dreams. Patrick's approach to money will inspire you to craft your own financial story. We hope you enjoy this conversation with Patrick and Drew. More about Patrick Belisle: Patrick Belisle is a self-described "practical mystic" who studied theology with Benedictine monks at his college in Minnesota, meditated with Buddhist monks in Thailand, and had a powerful spiritual awakening at the Osho Commune in Pune, India. He and his wife Jane, also a Hoffman graduate, traveled around the world for a year, and around North America for another three years, in search of the meaning of life. They live happily and authentically in Charlottesville, Virginia. Over the years, Patrick has worn many hats: He is a longtime student and teacher of famous psychic Edgar Cayce's readings. Patrick had a 15-year tenure as a Director at Edgar Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) in Virginia Beach, VA. He's also worked for  Dr. Ian Stevenson's Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia for many years. UVADOPS.org applies rigorous scientific research to Near-Death Experiences (NDEs), children who seem to remember past lives, psychic phenomena, and other consciousness-related topics. Patrick has practiced hypnotherapy for many years. He has worked with young people in many capacities, facilitated various relationship workshops, and officiated over 60 weddings, baby blessings, and celebrations of life. Patrick currently serves as Director of Philanthropy at the Hoffman Institute Foundation. He helps raise over $2 million annually for student scholarships and teacher training. Beginning in 2025, Patrick and Hoffman's Board has set a goal to raise $25 million to purchase and renovate Hoffman's new Santa Sabina campus in San Rafael, CA. Santa Sabina will open in 2026. His unique perspective on money as “financial energy” will inspire you to think of your financial energy in a whole new way; how it comes to you, how you use it, and how it all works. Current mainstream science and philosophy portray mind, personality, and consciousness as nothing more than byproducts of brain activity. She is also a board certified clinical psychologist and conducts research, teaches, and provides clinical care at UVA in psychiatry and the cancer center. She also studies and researches after death communication. She lived on a farm in a house that witnessed Civil War strife, with her mother a nurse and her father a would-be farmer surgeon. Exposed to life and death on a farm, she began at an early age asking herself and her parents metaphysical questions – long before she became a clinician and research scientist. We hear about her life changing story at the beach and fascinating surgical table stories heard from her aging father. We learn about her pursuit in researching after death communications from those who lose loved ones and how this research may help develop more wholistic therapeutic approaches to grieving.   Timestamps: 00:00:00 Coming Up 00:01:21 Introduction 00:03:50 The Division of Perceptual Studies 00:07:45 Does Your "Soul" Exist After Death? 00:13:58 Asking "What is the purpose of life?" and "What happens after death?" 00:20:26 Seeing a Person that is Dead 00:26:01 Divine Interventions 00:32:11 After Death Communication 00:42:34 Living Mindfully Across the Lifespan 00:46:26 Government Funding for Near Death Experiences 00:57:12 Aftermath of NDE's and OBE's   Episodes to check out: Dr. Bruce Greyson (ep 69), Dr. Antonia Mills (ep 88) and Dr. Iya Whiteley (ep 185)   Kim, https://med.virginia.edu/perceptual-studies/dops-staff/kim-penberthy/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/j-kim-penberthy-79017824/ Book w Morgan: https://www.amazon.com/Living-Mindfully-Across-Lifespan-Intergenerational-ebook/dp/B08LXJFNST/ref=sr_1_1?crid=4A42NNAPUGA&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.3NWBIzpE1SZHjenYF1AtZg.fOCzcGTIApPhdVhuHyTPrOIvW9O8at0lMhi9-7Gch_o&dib_tag=se&keywords=kim+penberthy+Living+Mindfully+Across+the+Lifespan%3A+An+Intergenerational+Guide&qid=1740933711&sprefix=kim+penberthy+living+mindfully+across+the+lifespan+an+intergenerational+guide%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-1     For fun, story about Meat from the Sky: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_meat_shower   To give to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit here: https://behindgreatness.org. Many people who've had near death experiences speak of similar sensations - a white light, a sense of calm, and a feeling of warmth Many come back from such experiences saying they've had a glimpse into the afterlife. So what exactly is occurring in during these near death experiences? Are people truly getting a glimpse into what happens after we die? Or are the experiences that people report a reflection of a biological process that's occurring? Or are these not mutually exclusive? Dr. Marieta Pehlivanova joins the podcast. Studies   University of Virginia, Jim Tucker.  “Some young children, usually between the ages of 2 and 5, speak about memories of a previous life they claim to have lived. At the same time they often show behaviors, such as phobias or preferences, that are unusual within the context of their particular family and cannot be explained by any current life events. These memories appear to be concordant with the child's statements about a previous life.” In many cases of this type, the child's statements have been shown to correspond accurately to facts in the life and death of a deceased person. Some of the children have birthmarks and birth defects that correspond to wounds or other marks on the deceased person whose life is being remembered by the child.  In numerous cases, postmortem reports have confirmed these correspondences.  Older children may retain these apparent memories, but generally they seem to fade around the age of seven.  The young subjects of these cases have been found all over the world including Europe and North America. For the past 20 years, Dr. Jim Tucker, now the director of the Division of Perceptual Studies, has focused mainly on cases found in the United States. His book Return to Life offers accounts of very strong American cases of young children who remember previous lives. In this book, Dr. Tucker writes about the now well-known cases of James Leininger, a young boy who had verifiable past-life memories of being a WWII pilot, and Ryan Hammons, who had verifiable memories of being a Hollywood extra and talent agent. Though western science has long rejected the idea of an immaterial self, modern research into near-death experiences, or NDEs, has now proven that many occur after the point of bodily death, and thus cannot be produced in the brain. Whether they are evidence of the soul, or some other undiscovered phenomenon, NDEs have put Western materialist scientists on the defensive, and led many researchers to embrace bold new theories of consciousness. Some people think we only get one life to live and others think our spirit or soul returns again and again in different bodies. While past lives have never been 100% scientifically proven, The Division of Perceptual Studies at The University of Virginia has been studying this possibility for decades. In this episode we present two such cases. First, an American boy named James Leininger who remembered a past life as a WWII pilot. Then, the case of the Pollock Twins who are British girls who believed they were the reincarnations of their sisters who died in a car accident before they were born. We delve into his research findings and methodology on children who claim to remember their previous lives. Dr. Tucker notes that these children don't just recall biographical details of their past, but they also retain feelings and emotions. His findings have important implications for how we understand consciousness.
