We speak with Dr. Kim Penberthy today who joined us from the University of Virginia. Kim wears many hats. She is a professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She is also a board certified clinical psychologist and conducts research, teaches, and provides clinical care at UVA in psychiatry and the cancer center. She also studies and researches after death communication. She lived on a farm in a house that witnessed Civil War strife, with her mother a nurse and her father a would-be farmer surgeon. Exposed to life and death on a farm, she began at an early age asking herself and her parents metaphysical questions – long before she became a clinician and research scientist. We hear about her life changing story at the beach and fascinating surgical table stories heard from her aging father. We learn about her pursuit in researching after death communications from those who lose loved ones and how this research may help develop more wholistic therapeutic approaches to grieving.   Timestamps: 00:00:00 Coming Up 00:01:21 Introduction 00:03:50 The Division of Perceptual Studies 00:07:45 Does Your "Soul" Exist After Death? 00:13:58 Asking "What is the purpose of life?" and "What happens after death?" 00:20:26 Seeing a Person that is Dead 00:26:01 Divine Interventions 00:32:11 After Death Communication 00:42:34 Living Mindfully Across the Lifespan 00:46:26 Government Funding for Near Death Experiences 00:57:12 Aftermath of NDE's and OBE's   Episodes to check out: Dr. Bruce Greyson (ep 69), Dr. Antonia Mills (ep 88) and Dr. Iya Whiteley (ep 185)   Kim, https://med.virginia.edu/perceptual-studies/dops-staff/kim-penberthy/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/j-kim-penberthy-79017824/ Book w Morgan: https://www.amazon.com/Living-Mindfully-Across-Lifespan-Intergenerational-ebook/dp/B08LXJFNST/ref=sr_1_1?crid=4A42NNAPUGA&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.3NWBIzpE1SZHjenYF1AtZg.fOCzcGTIApPhdVhuHyTPrOIvW9O8at0lMhi9-7Gch_o&dib_tag=se&keywords=kim+penberthy+Living+Mindfully+Across+the+Lifespan%3A+An+Intergenerational+Guide&qid=1740933711&sprefix=kim+penberthy+living+mindfully+across+the+lifespan+an+intergenerational+guide%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-1     For fun, story about Meat from the Sky: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_meat_shower   To give to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit here: https://behindgreatness.org. This episode is all about near-death experiences, what they are, who has them, what is behind them and how they affect the lives of the people who experience them. Dr Greyson has been researching the subject of NDEs for nearly 50 years, so this is an in-depth and fascinating discussion of a phenomenon that happens to people of all ages and backgrounds, across the world.  Dr Greyson shares some of the results of his research. Including, why many suicidal people find a new zest for life after an NDE, whether some people´s NDEs are not a peaceful experience and what children see during an NDE. They also discuss some other spontaneous mystical experiences that certain drugs or medical conditions can trigger. KEY TAKEAWAYS Near-death experiences are very common, about 1 in 20 people that come close to death experience them. All kinds of people have them. What caused them to come close to death, their age, and their beliefs do not seem to have an impact. There is still some dissent amongst doctors about NDEs, but both patients and doctors are now more willing to discuss the subject. People in different countries use different words, depending on their culture and surroundings, but are describing the same thing. People who are very controlling in life find suddenly not being in control very unpleasant, sometimes terrifying. For people who attempt suicide having a NDE often helps them to heal. People do have dreams that come true, sometimes in great detail. Yvonne shares her experience of this. Some people who have come back, feel compelled to change their life, including their jobs. Children have similar NDEs as adults do. Most near-death experiencers say that the physical reasons for being afraid are not important. BEST MOMENTS “There just didn´t seem to be any explanation in terms of the brain to account for these experiences.” “They often say it's more real than this world is, and there's no doubt in their mind that we do not die permanently.” “The culture determines, in part, how you interpret the experience.” “There are also people who describe the traditional hell features, fire, brimstone and demons, but they're very rare.” “In some cases, we have experiencers who encounter deceased individuals who are not known yet by the experiencer to be dead.” “And he came back realizing … when you hurt other people, you hurt yourself. People have been having Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) all over the world for as long as we can look back into history. And the strange thing is… these experiences seem to have a lot in common. Why? Is it a look into the afterlife? Is it just our neurons firing in weird ways as the brain dies? We'll talk to psychiatrist Bruce Greyson, one of the world's leading experts on Near-Death Experiences, about the research that led him to rethink his understanding of the nature of life, death, and the continuity of consciousness. We'll explore the science behind how these experiences can provide comfort, heal past trauma, and even create transcendent experiences that help us make as much sense of our lives as of impending death. And we'll also consider the bigger question of what NDEs suggest, if anything, about our understanding of reality. Bruce Greyson, M.D. is the author of “After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond.” Find out more about his book, and his over 45 years of experience researching NDEs, on his website. Here are links to the recordings of people you heard talking about their NDEs throughout the episode: Sharon Stone, Dr. Mary Neal, Renee Pasarow, Cherie Aimee, Jayne Smith. Here's a video of Dr. Gregory Shushan talking about his research on NDEs in ancient religions.

Near death experiences change people's lives - and not always for the better. Most near-death experiencers say that they have trouble speaking about the experience because there just aren't words to describe it. It's like trying to draw an odor with a crayon. Experiencers describe a sense of connectedness to other people, to nature, to the Universe, and to the divine. For them, this changes everything. For instance, it makes them much less interested in power and fame. Experiencers almost always say, "This is the most important thing that's ever happened to me, and nothing else in my life compares to it." The most common change is that they are no longer afraid of death. --------------------------------------------- About Dr. Bruce Greyson: Dr. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. Features of near-death experiences include a sense of leaving the physical body, a life review, and encounters with a divine being or deceased loved ones. While some dismiss near-death experiences as dreams or the hallucinations of a dying brain, people generally do not have the same kinds of hallucinations. In contrast, the descriptions of near-death experiences are remarkably consistent across culture and time. ---------------------------------------------------- About Dr. Bruce Greyson: Dr. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. Happy summer! Fr. Nathan is taking a few weeks off from recording The Joyful Friar Podcast. During this time, we will be replaying the most-watched episodes!Enjoy this encore episode where Fr. Nathan discusses Dr. Bruce Greyson's research on near-death experiences.Dr. Bruce Greyson is the Chester Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia.  He was previously on the medical faculty at the University of Michigan and the University of Connecticut, where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry. Dr. Greyson has consulted with the National Institutes of Health and addressed symposia on consciousness at the United Nations and at the Dalai Lama's compound in Dharamsala, India. He has earned awards for his medical research and was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the highest honor bestowed by that organization.Dr. Greyson's interest in near-death experiences began just a few months after graduating from medical school, when he treated an unconscious patient in the emergency room who stunned him the next morning with an account of leaving her body. That event challenged his beliefs about the mind and the brain, and ultimately led him on a journey to study near-death experiences scientifically, leading to more than a hundred publications in medical journals. He co-founded the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), an organization to support and promote research into these experiences, and for 27 years edited the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the only scholarly journal dedicated to near-death research. Through his research, he has discovered common and universal themes in near-death experiences that go beyond neurophysiological or cultural interpretations, as well as patterns of consistent aftereffects on individuals' attitudes, beliefs, values, and personalities.Dr. Greyson is the author of "After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond." The book challenges our everyday ideas about our minds and our brains and offers key insights on how we can begin to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.https://www.brucegreyson.comClick this link and let us know what you love about The Joyful Friar Podcast! Connect with Father Nathan Castle, O.P.

We are thrilled to have Dr. Shushan with us again this year. His body of work in the field of near-death studies is unrivaled  on near-death experience is unrivaled.  He is a historian of religions, an award-winning author, and the leading authority on near-death experiences and the afterlife across cultures and throughout history. His books include The Next World: Extraordinary Experiences of the Afterlife, Near-Death Experiences in Indigenous Religions, and Near-Death Experience in Ancient Civilizations (coming soon from Inner Traditions). His forthcoming titles include The Historical Anthology of Near-Death Experiences, and Mind Dust and White Crows: The Psychical Research of William James (both as editor). Dr. Shushan is a Visiting Research Fellow at University of Winchester's Centre for Death, Religion and Culture; Adjunct Professor of Thantaology at Marian University; and Research Fellow of the Parapsychology Foundation. He was formerly Perrott-Warrick Researcher at University of Oxford's Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion;  Scholar-in Residence at the Centro Incontri Umani (The Cross Cultural Centre), Ascona, Switzerland; and Honorary Research Fellow at the Religious Experience Research Centre, University of Wales Trinity Saint David. He has lectured at universities in the UK, Ireland, and Switzerland and has given numerous talks on his research in nine countries, and has appeared on the History Channel. Here's what leading scholars are saying about his work: “Gregory Shushan has produced the most important scholarly work on near-death experiences in the last thirty years. He describes the process by which, despite regular attempts to marginalize its power, the NDE has been perhaps the most important shaper of religious creativity in human history. This is a journey and an argument as fascinating and as engrossing as the social history of mankind itself.” -- Allan Kellehear, Clinical Professor, University of Vermont.“Near-Death Experience in Indigenous Religions is a tour de force.  By comparing recorded cases from North America, Africa, and Oceania, Shushan presents a compelling argument for the centrality of near-death experiences to the development of religious ideas across time and culture. Any future discussions of NDEs and the origins of religion will need to take Shushan's major contribution into account.”  -- Fiona Bowie, Research Affiliate, School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography, Oxford University; and founder of Afterlife Research Center “Gregory Shushan's new book provides a uniquely insightful and provocative analysis of near-death experiences that documents their formative influence on worldwide beliefs about an afterlife. His ethnological perspective results in a more comprehensive understanding of NDEs than a purely biological or psychological model can provide, and suggests that afterlife beliefs are rooted not in culture but in the universal human experience of NDEs. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand NDEs and their role in society.” -- Bruce Greyson, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia.READ MORE: https://www.gregoryshushan.com/Dr. Shushan will be presenting at our 2024 Conference on Death, Grief and Belief, online Saturday August 24, 2024.  DETAILS HERE

Have you ever wondered if near-death experiences are real? Many near-death experiencers verify that claim. They say that only until we leave our body are we capable of experiencing the entire spectrum of reality. They say once they left their physical body, their senses expanded exponentially. Dr. Bruce Greyson has studied over 1,000 cases of near-death experiences. He found consistent similarities in #NDEs that many of us have read about - the white light, incredible peace and love that is omnipresent in that realm, and the existence of a life review. This has led me to three questions:1. If my conscience is going to live on after I leave this body, should i live my life differently? 2. If I knew the place that I was going to was so beautiful, how would that affect my view of my own passing?3. What if I had a life review? Everything I ever did was going to flash before my eyes and I was going to feel the same pain or joy that I had inflicted on others, how would I treat people differently? In the next episodes of #HaveYouEverWondered? This week I am reading from Richard Martini's book 'Close Encounters of the Flipside Kind: How To Phone Home'.For the past fifteen years, Richard has been filming, recording interviews with people talking to people offstage via hypnotherapy, mediumship or via guided meditation. In this book, Richard interviews people offstage about Aliens - including physicists who have left the stage (Stephen Hawking, Carl Sagan) as well as psychiatrists and scientists on the Flipside, (John E Mack, J Allen Hynek) peppering these interviews with personal accounts from people who were "visited by aliens" or who had an experience seeing them on their "council" or seeing them during a guided meditation or via hypnosis. People report the same things - that "we are all aliens" because "we all choose to come here from elsewhere" Mind bending reports. As Gary Schwartz PhD wrote in the foreword to his first book FLIPSIDE, "this is the kind of book where one you've read it, you'll never see the world in the same way again."BioWriter/Director/Author Richard is an award winning filmmaker, who has written and/or directed 9 theatrical features, and a number of documentaries. This week I'm talking to Richard Martini about his book 'Close Encounters of the Flipside Kind: How To Phone Home'.For the past fifteen years, Richard has been filming, recording interviews with people talking to people offstage via hypnotherapy, mediumship or via guided meditation. Near-Death Experiences: The BEST EVIDENCE Of Life After Death | Dr. Bruce Greyson Watch this interview at-  https://youtu.be/NsbiB-Ipc3E?si=EXij3g2kdlIOea8A Dhru Purohit 441K subscribers 982,759 views Mar 4, 2021 We often think the mind is a creation of the brain, or that the mind and the brain are one and the same. But when the brain is offline for a number of reasons, like illness or injury, the mind can sometimes still be very active. Today on The Broken Brain Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Bruce Greyson about this phenomenon in the context of near-death experiences or NDEs. We have to remember that even just 20 years ago new scientific ideas were emerging that people thought were crazy. People are always skeptical of things they haven't been taught. Now, the study of near-death experiences is pushing the boundaries of modern research. Dr. Greyson is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. His award-winning research led him to become a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and to be invited by the Dalai Lama to participate in a dialogue between Western scientists and Buddhist monks in India. Dr. In this episode, Dr. Greyson shares some of the most dramatic first-person accounts of near-death experiences from his book After. Dhru and Dr. Greyson discuss how NDEs reveal a lot about dying and what might come after, but they also reveal just as much about life and living, about the value of compassion and our interconnectedness with one another, and about what makes a life meaningful and fulfilling. They also talk about how NDEs can help to transform the fear of dying that pervades our culture—into a healthy view of it as one more milestone in the course of our lives. In this episode, we dive into: - Dr. Greyson's first experience with a patient who had a near-death experience (4:32) - A near-death experience story from Dr. Greyson's book (15:51) - What near-death experiences tell us about the mind-body connection (19:37) - The parallels between psychedelic experiences and near-death experiences (29:06) - The misconceptions around near-death experiences (34:58) - How near-death experiences reduce the fear of death (39:08) - How to get the benefits of a near-death experience without actually having one (41:54) - The history of near-death experiences (46:51) - Reincarnation beliefs among near-death experiencers (49:22) - How near-death experiences change people's lives (1:01:45) For more on Dr. Greyson you can follow him on Instagram @BruceGreysonMD, on Facebook @BruceGreysonMD, on Twitter @BruceGreyson, and through his website https://www.brucegreyson.com. Dr. Bruce Greyson was the protégé of Near Death Experience Researcher, Dr. Raymond Moody. Dr. Greyson was raised in a scientific household with no particular religion, his interest in near-death experiences was a scientific one that started when an unconscious patient of his described (in detail) a conversation he had with another woman in a different room. Despite the scrutiny of his peers, he spent the next 50 years collecting, cataloging & studying thousands of modern accounts of near-death experiences (NDEs). In this episode, he shares evidence that consciousness exists outside the body, terminal lucidity, astral projection & many stories illustrating the unexplained. This episode originally aired on July 26, 2021.If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 148: ARE TECHNOLOGY, RELIGION & UFOs CONNECTED?Guest: https://www.brucegreyson.com/ | https://med.virginia.edu/perceptual-studies/ | https://www.iands.org/ | https://www.facebook.com/Bruce-Greyson-MD-114742627009060 | https://www.linkedin.com/in/bruce-greyson-4154b4173/ | Book: https://amzn.to/3iL3ULrHost:  https://www.meredithforreal.com/  | https://www.instagram.com/meredithforreal/  | meredith@meredithforreal.com | https://www.youtube.com/meredithforreal  | https://www.facebook.com/meredithforrealthecuriousintrovertSponsors: https://uwf.edu/university-advancement/departments/historic-trust/ | https://www.ensec.net/

Tonight's podcast begins with a reference to the documentary AFTER DEATH which I happened to go to their premiere.  It's about the data, research from near death experiences, and focuses on some of the NDE's that included visits with "heaven" or "god" or "Jesus."  Angel.com studios is a crowd funded distribution network, and their members vote which films they'd like to see. In this case, something that's up my alley - I saw the film and wished I had made it.  They interview scientists talking about the research, and do excellent reenactments of events.  The only quibble I have is the quote that "23% of NDE's are hellish" - I asked the author of that quote where he got it from, he said "The guidebook of NDE's" which was written by my friend Dr. Bruce Greyson.  I have the handbook, as well as his latest book AFTER which clearly states that figure is "1 to 3%" - not "23%."  But that aside, I understand the need for people to believe that hell exists - or that it might be waiting for people who are less than honorable. Which leads us into tonight's podcast, because in it, Luana Anders, our moderator on the flipside who passed in 1996 brought four disruptors - icons, Einstein, Hawking, Tesla and Genghis Khan.  The reason he was there was to point out that "everyone plays their role on the planet" which can include some pretty awful stuff. Genghis Khan's army was responsible for an estimated "40 million deaths" - more than Stalin and that German fellow combined.  But that doesn't mean that we cannot speak to him - again, I don't make the guest list, Luana brought him to make a point. And so I interviewed him, asked him the same questions I ask every new member of our class. From there he spoke about his journey, and the three scientists spoke about how to fix the planet, and a methodology to do so. (Think tanks where people do exactly what we're doing.) Finally, my friend Margaret Lindsay showed up - Luana mentioned she had been to visit me a week ago - and Jennifer saw her with a woman.  I guessed correctly that the woman with her was "Helen" - as Margaret owned her home on Martha's Vineyard, where I stayed, and signed Helen Keller's guest book. Just another mind bending podcast in an ocean of them. Enjoy.

This week I'm reading an extract from Richard Martini's book 'The Greatest Story Never Told: As Told by Jesus and Those Who Knew Him'.This book is recorded conversations (on film, via skype, zoom) with people who spontaneously claim to be “seeing” “hearing” or otherwise getting information from someone they identify as Jesus. Some claim to have “seen him before” “never seen him before” or “they don't believe in him” but are somehow accessing him. But the consistency of content is what drew me to the reports.I'm a writer/director of theatrical motion pictures. I've written and/or directed eight feature films, including “Limit Up” and “You Can't Hurry Love.” I've written 10 “best-selling books” (kindle in their genre) about the research of what people say under hypnosis about the afterlife, and recently books with the help of a medium talking directly to folks I knew no longer on the planet, (“Backstage Pass to the Flipside” 1, 2 and 3 with Jennifer Shaffer). I've written miniseries for HBO (“The De Medicis” – unproduced) and other film companies. I've written scripts for major film studios (including David Kirkpatrick, our trusty foreword fellow) worked on the feature films of Robert Towne (“Personal Best”) and Phillip Noyce (“Salt.”) It's not like I'm seeking this line of investigation… it literally fell into my lap. While filming people under hypnosis or not under hypnosis, “seeing” or “hearing” from Jesus started to become more frequent in the footage. At first it was disconcerting. People not under hypnosis saying “I'm seeing Jesus. I don't know why I'm seeing him because I don't believe in him!” Eventually I took the leap; “Well, can we ask him a question?”To my chagrin the answers “he gave” weaved a different story of his life. A story that had echoes of “The Life of St. Issa” as well as other tales of his “survival” from the crucifixion. These consistent yet contrary stories challenged my conception of who he was, challenged my ideas of what consciousness might be, and basically challenge my existence in more ways than one. I published a number of those interviews in “Hacking the Afterlife” but recently while writing “Architecture of the Afterlife” I've had more people claim he was “showing up.” And the more he showed up, the more stories he told about his path and journey that mirrored the previous ones. And finally, the author, former studio exec David Kirkpatrick suggested “letting him speak.”Needless to say, there's no way to prove they are his words or it's him speaking. However, what he says is consistent, what he says is contrary to the mythology of him. Allow me to say that again; every time he shows up, he recounts the same contrary story about his life, which is an alternate version of the “Greatest Story Ever Told.” When asked why he was interested in "telling an alternate version of his life" he's reportedly said on more than one occasion: "It's not alternate if it's true." In this book you'll hear a linear story about the alpha and omega as told by him and those who reportedly knew him.I've been reluctant to share this story for years; I offer these pages to help people make a DIRECT connection with him. He's not gone; he's just not here. His first book, "Flipside: A Tourist's Guide on How to Navigate the Afterlife" went to #1 twice at Amazon in all its genres. The book is based on transcripts of a documentary he made which is available at Amazon (Flipside: A Journey Into the Afterlife) and Gaia TV. His books "It's a Wonderful Afterlife" volumes one and two expands the research into the afterlife from Michael Newton's work, to include interviews with a number of scientists in the field of consciousness, including Dr. Bruce Greyson, Dr. Mario Beauregard, and Gary Schwartz Phd. He also examines near death experiences and compares their accounts to similar ones during between life sessions (the technique used by Michael Newton that allows people to access the between lives realm, or LBLs) and other examples (OBEs) where people may have lost their ability to think normally, but are having the same experiences. In "Hacking the Afterlife" he interviews mediums and explores "interviewing people no longer on the planet." This week I'm talking to Richard Martini about his book 'The Greatest Story Never Told: As Told by Jesus and Those Who Knew Him'.This book is recorded conversations (on film, via skype, zoom) with people who spontaneously claim to be “seeing” “hearing” or otherwise getting information from someone they identify as Jesus. Some claim to have “seen him before” “never seen him before” or “they don't believe in him” but are somehow accessing him. People who report being disturbed by him “showing up” burst into tears, can't breathe, or in some cases are “dumbstruck” (literally can't speak) by seeing, hearing someone not there - while not under hypnosis or any imaginable consciousness altered reason. But the consistency of content is what drew me to the reports.People who've never considered his story, people who had a firm belief in what they thought was his story - reporting (consistently) an “alternate version of events.” People who “used to believe in religion” but no longer do, people who go to church weekly who claim to be startled at hearing something different than they've been told (“I always felt this to be the case, but I've never heard it before”). His story doesn't change, but the people who tell it do.That's why it's a story that has never been told.I'm a writer/director of theatrical motion pictures. I encourage everyone to ask him on their own.BioWriter/Director/Author Richard is an award winning filmmaker, who has written and/or directed 9 theatrical features, and a number of documentaries.
