This week I am talking to Dr Gregory Shushan about his book 'Near-Death Experience in Indigenous Religions'. Near-death experiences are known around the world and throughout human history. They are sometimes reported by individuals who have revived from a period of clinical death or near-death and they typically feature sensations of leaving the body, entering and emerging from darkness, meeting deceased friends and relatives, encountering beings of light, judgment of one's earthly life, feelings of oneness, and reaching barriers, only to return to the body. Those who have NDEs almost invariably understand them as having profound spiritual or religious significance. In this book, Gregory Shushan explores the relationships between near-death experiences, shamanism, and beliefs about the afterlife in traditional indigenous societies in Africa, North America, and Oceania. Drawing on historical accounts of the earliest encounters with explorers, missionaries, and ethnologists, this study addresses questions such as: Do ideas about the afterlife commonly originate in NDEs? What role does culture play in how people experience and interpret NDEs? How can we account for cross-cultural similarities and differences between afterlife beliefs? Though NDEs are universal, Shushan shows that how they are actually experienced and interpreted varies by region and culture. As the historical documents reveal, in North America, they were commonly valorized, and attempts were made to replicate them through shamanic rituals. In Africa, however, they were largely considered aberrational events with links to possession or sorcery. In Oceania, Micronesia corresponded more to the African model, while Australia had a greater focus on afterlife journey shamanism. Polynesia and Melanesia showed an almost casual acceptance of the phenomenon as reflected in numerous myths, legends, and historical accounts. This study examines the continuum of similarities and differences between NDEs, shamanism, and afterlife beliefs in dozens of cultures throughout these regions. In the process, it makes a valuable contribution to our knowledge about the origins of afterlife beliefs around the world and the significance of related experiences in human history. And it got Sarah wondering — what else can crack us open like that without requiring us to leave the atmosphere? That question leads her into a deep dive on near-death experiences: what they are, what the research actually shows, who's done that research (hello, Dr. Bruce Greyson and his 50 years at UVA), and why NDEs have been quietly moving from the fringe into legitimate scientific conversation. She covers what experiencers commonly report — the altered time, the life review, the overwhelming and unconditional love — and the striking aftereffects that tend to follow people home: less fear of death, more compassion, deeper purpose, heightened intuition, and a sense of mission that doesn't fade. And then she makes her case for mediumship, because here's the thing: the love that pours through in a reading? It sounds a lot like what NDEers describe on the other side. NDEs tear the veil open in one dramatic, involuntary moment. Mediumship, and any serious spiritual practice, does the same thing more slowly, more deliberately, and as a practice you can return to. And here's the part that might surprise you: you don't even have to have an NDE to be changed by one. Studying them does it too. Purnima Sinha is a spiritual director and coach whose life has been shaped by meditation, near‑death experiences, and a deep commitment to seva (selfless service). In this episode I'm talking to Barbara Bartolome about her two near death experiences.Barbara is a two time NDEr.  Her first NDE resulted from a childhood illness at 18 months of age, when a high fever caused her to go into convulsions and stop breathing, which resulted in cardiac arrest.  As the ambulance arrived outside their home, her parents and older siblings witnessed her spontaneously regain consciousness, after an 8-10 minute period without heart or lung activity. She was not informed of this early-life event until her siblings finally disclosed it, when she was 53 years old.Her second NDE occurred when she went into cardiac arrest due to a radiology technician's error during a pre-surgery diagnostic procedure in 1987, at St. Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara. Finding herself above the x-ray table, she watched the medical team's resuscitation efforts and experienced the presence of a magnificent spiritual being.  After being successfully resuscitated, she accurately recounted to the astonished medical team their individual comments and actions during the resuscitation, which was quite alarming to the team. Because her medical team and the hospital staff then strictly avoided discussing her experience with her, she rarely spoke about it for over twenty years, until she found the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation (www.nderf.org) in 2007 and the IANDS organization (www.iands.org) in 2009.These organizations helped to connect her to others who had experienced NDEs and they expanded her understanding of death and the survival of consciousness beyond death, allowing her to finally assimilate her experiences, as well as to understand their impact upon her life and worldview. She considers her NDEs as incredible gifts, deeply feeling that it is her life purpose to share what they teach with others.  Barbara founded IANDS Santa Barbara in August 2011 and is strongly committed to the IANDS organization's purpose in promoting responsible, multi-disciplinary exploration of near-death and similar experiences, examining their effects on people's lives, and their implications for the change to our beliefs about life, death, afterlife, consciousness, and human purpose.
