When I found out Cinda Williams Chima was starting a new YA fantasy series, I couldn't wait to read it. Children of Ragnarok follows Eiric, who is trying to sail to a magical island with his sister Liv, and Reginn, who is a magic user working to uncover buried secrets. I spend too much time talking about Chima's other books, make predictions for the next books, and discuss the shady things going down.
On today's episode, Joe and Jill discuss why they love books that have magic schools and offer book recommendations for folks who want books featuring magic schools that aren't that magic school. Books mentioned in this episode: Witchlings by Claribel Ortega A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik Carry On by Rainbow Rowell SuperMutant Magic Academy by Jillian Tamaki The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey Akarnae by Lynette Noni The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness The Nature of Witches by Rachel Griffin The Black Mage by Daniel Barnes The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani Vita Nostra by Marina Dyachenko The Magicians series by Lev Grossman The Heir Chronicles by Cinda Williams Chima, specifically The Wizard Heir Charmed Life – The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Book 1 by Diana Wynne Jones The Circle of Magic Series by Tamora Pierce – book One is Sandry's book The Divine Dungeon Series by Dakota Krout And Mother of Learning by nobody103 The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins Learn more about your ad choices. Those who don't write…criticize those who do. In our defense, we also give a few compliments this week too. Pull up a chair to Lit and Liquor's first wine night, featuring Kim Crawford's Sauvignon Blanc as our liquor of the week. Our challenge this week was to each pick one book we felt was famous but didn't deserve the hype, and one that actually deserves the spot. Our authors range from John Green to Cinda Williams Chima to Terry Brooks to Kiera Cass, spanning several genres of fiction and fantasy. Who ranked where? You'll have to listen to find out. Next week join us as we do a second book to movie--Introducing Sam to the Harry Potter series for the first time!
