This week, we return from our lengthy and unplanned hiatus with the world's! nichest! episode! That's right, we're talking about Among Others by Jo Walton, Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater, and Tam Lin by Pamela Dean, three fantasy novels set on school campuses that blend faerie folklore and coming-of-age stories. Topics of discussion include how each book puts their own spin on the supernatural and the folkloric, tragically canceled book series, reproductive rights, and where on a college campus you're most likely to run into a faerie. Episode 155 is a book club episode, and we're talking about Gen's summer pick, Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo. It offers up some spooky southern gothic vibes with a side of car races and a family curse. Show NotesAfter picking this book, Gen realized it was blurbed by the author of her last book club pick, Starling House by Alix E. Harrow. As Jette aptly pointed out, this is the most Gen book ever, complete with fast cars and ill-advised road races. This is Lee Mandelo's debut novel. He has since written two novellas, Feed Them Silence, and The Woods All Black, the latter of which made it onto Gen's Top 10 Books for 2024. Our next book club pick has been on Jette's list for ages: Just Kids by Patti Smith. She's finally diving in, and Gen is reading it for a second time. She's ready to be wrecked by it all over again. In our next episode we'll be talking about Who Will Bury You? by Chido Muchemwa, a short story collection generously sent to us by House of Anansi Press. We love working them and are super excited to see what this one is all about. Book a meeting with Erica here: https://manuscriptacademy.com/faculty-members/erica-finkel Erica Finkel (she/her) is an Executive Editor for Amulet Books and Abrams Books for Young Readers. Before starting at Abrams in 2010, she was, among other things, an English teacher in France, a theater-camp counselor, and an ice-cream scooper. K. Ali and Aisha Saeed, Fraidyzoo by Thyra Heder, and a picture-book biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (her hero) by Jonah Winter. When she gets the chance to read a non-Abrams book, she particularly enjoys the work of Gary D. Schmidt, Maggie Stiefvater, Kristin Cashore, and Rainbow Rowell. We fancy ourselves quite good at observing, so it's a great theme for us as we read chapters 34-40 of The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater this week. In this section, Declan and Ronan have a nice moment. Back in Cabeswater, Neeve is trying to mitigate the harm of Piper Greenmantle and the demon, and is unmade for her efforts. At the Barns, the Gangsey piece together their experiences. Adam tells Gansey about the kiss; Gansey admits that he loves Blue. Henry Cheng is kidnapped by Mr Gray, but Gansey intervenes. We're returning to the foundational theme of connections. You can check out season 5 for The Raven Boys, season 8 for The Dream Thieves, and season 10 for Blue Lily, Lily Blue. You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 5 November 2023. Thanks for listening! You can find out more about this podcast at www.marginaliapod.com. We're reading 27-33 of The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater through the theme of bravery this week. It feels like a veyr apt theme as these characters have been called upon to be brave time and time again. In this section, Gansey is waiting for Blue at the urgent care when Ronan and Adam turn up, post-Cabeswater misadventure. Gansey comes clean about his and Blue's relationship. Meanwhile, in DC, Declan gets a call from an old “friend” of Niall's to let him know the wolves are convening on Henrietta. Declan takes himself to Henrietta and he and Ronan have a heart-to-heart (kind of). Ronan elects to stay in Henrietta, but asks Declan to take Matthew to DC to keep him safe. Henry, meanwhile, convinces Gansey to climb into a hole in the basement of a building and puts a robotic bee in his hand. It's a test of mettle that Gansey passes. The rituals are intricate. (Henry also has fun playacting an Aglionby jerk with Blue.) Adam is coming to terms with wanting to be closer to Ronan than just friends, possibly, maybe. And Adam and Ronan kiss! We're returning to the foundational theme of connections. You can check out season 5 for The Raven Boys, season 8 for The Dream Thieves, and season 10 for Blue Lily, Lily Blue. You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 1 November 2023. Thanks for listening! You can find out more about this podcast at www.marginaliapod.com. Get ready to dive deep cause we're all about discovery this week! That's our theme for chapters 21-26 of Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven King. In this section, Adam and Ronan run into trouble retrieving Orphan Girl from Cabeswater. Adam finally asks all the right questions, and discovers that Ronan manifested Cabeswater—which raises lots of questions about who Adam is beholden to, if anyone. Meanwhile, Blue and Gansey head back to Fox Way, only to find the entire house dark, and buzzing, and terrifying. A possessed Noah trie to claw out Blue's eye; Gansey's intention and her battery power are the only things that save them. Piper Greenmantle uses her new friend the demon to casually murder her ex, Colin. We're returning to the foundational theme of connections. They end up at Adam's father's house— the wrong devil. Blue and Gansey go to Henry Cheng's toga party. What does commitment mean to you? It's a big theme and there's a lot to work with in chapters 7-13 of The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater. In this section, we are introduced to the Laumonier triplets, one of whom happens to be Piper Greenmantle's father. The Gangsey take Orphan Girl to Cabeswater to live with Aurora, for lack of any better options. Blue faces the reality of a grim future without Gansey & without the ability to travel the world like she wants to. Gansey has a panic attack at Raven Day; Henry Cheng shows up to save him. Adam's hands and eyes, in service to Cabeswater, no longer seem to be completely under his control. Something sinister is happening to their beloved wood… We're returning to the foundational theme of connections. Since childhood, people ask that loaded question: “Where Do I Fit In?” Creatives still ask that question, but with a twist: “Where Is My Place in the Creative World?” Authors Joy E. Rancatore and Mea Smith have asked the same question, and they've developed a three-tiered approach to help Creatives answer where they belong. In this episode, Joy and Mea provide Creatives with 11 questions to answer. These prompts cover the first two tiers of finding your place in the creative world. The third tier—connecting with the right creative audience—will be covered more thoroughly in Episode 3 of Season 5. To answer Where Is Your Place in the Creative World, decide who you are and what you want as a creative by answering these six questions: #1: What are your fundamental standards? What is your code of conduct or the set of standards that guide what and how you create? #2: Why do you have to create? #3: What do you want to create? #4: What are your goals for what you create? #5: What do you want to make people feel? #6: Envision yourself as a successful artist. Who's around you? Where are you? How are you holding that success—are you headlining conferences as a keynote speaker or touring bookstores and libraries across the country or traveling while you create? Next, look outside yourself to who you want beside you on your creative journey, by answering these five questions: Question #1: Who do you want to support? Question #2: What do you want to promote? Question #3: What support would you like? Question #4: How can you help fellow creatives? How are you willing to do this? Question #5: What safeguards can you put in place to make sure you engage wisely in ways that are best for you and them? Wasting no time having the deep conversations, this week we talk about family as we read chapters 6-10 of Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. In this section, Blue's first day back in school is pretty terrible–she's reminded again of the impossibility of dreaming beyond her means, and then Noah goes nuts and supernaturally breaks things in her guidance counsellor's office. A creepy, smarmy dude comes to 300 Fox Way to threaten them, but is thwarted when he doesn't find Maura to specifically threaten. He turns out to be the new Latin teacher at Aglionby, and also, the Gray Man's former employer, Colin Greenmantle. We're well into our journey with The Raven Cycle - check out season 5 for The Raven Boys and season 8 for The Dream Thieves. We're also still actively recording this season so if you have thoughts or questions let us know at hello@marginaliapod.com, and we'll answer them as we go! You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 22 April 2023. Thanks for listening! You can find out more about this podcast at www.marginaliapod.com. We're back in Henrietta! We're continuing our journey with The Raven Cycle by reading Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. You can check out season 5 for The Raven Boys and season 8 for The Dream Thieves. We're starting how we mean to go on (in our feelings) by reading the prologue to chapter 5 through the theme of loss. And we're picking up the overarching theme of connection again! We're also still actively recording this season so if you have thoughts or questions let us know at hello@marginaliapod.com, and we'll answer them as we go! You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 15 April 2023. Thanks for listening! You can find out more about this podcast at www.marginaliapod.com. We are tackling another 2000s classic this week and watching Legally Blonde! And our loose themes were confidence and ambition. What, like it's hard? You can find the show notes on the website. We'll be back in Henrietta and reading Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. Themes will be up on the site shortly, so stay tuned! Reading and understanding cards can be hard for beginners. The companion book or little white book (LWB) can be viewed as a boat or a harbor that anchors you instead of being set adrift on a sea of tarot meanings/interpretations. However, as you grow and learn, you'll find that cards have a wide variety of meanings. So, in today's episode, we answer two listener questions about how you figure out what cards mean to you when the LWBs have different meanings. Homework: Keep a meanings journal. Compile various meanings for each card from all the sources you have available to you. Do it online or printed and see where things intersect and differ. Personal meanings are as valid as what “experts” write. Decks Mentioned: Scorpio Sea Tarot by Maggie Stiefvater and Melissa Cynova Handl Tarot (and the companion books, Major Arcana, and Minor Arcana, by Rachel Pollack) Mary-El Tarot by Marie White Wild Unknown Tarot by Kim Krans Herbal Tarot by Michael Tierra and Candis Cantin The Savvy Soul Tarot by Julie Waidelich Do you like what you hear? Send feedback to us at cardslingerscc@gmail.com. Follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/cardslingerscc and now on Instagram at www.instagram.com/cardslingerscc. Reminder, we would NEVER DM YOU for a reading from any social media site. We schedule all readings and conversations through our personal websites.
Well, here we are again! We're wrapping up Wayward Son this week through the theme of failure. It's been a big ol journey. In this section, Baz thinks Simon is dead. Simon is trying to rally, but he can't get up, not until he hears Baz calling for him. Shep gets Agatha and Penny out of the SUV, and they come to the rescure with magic. Shep comes up with a getaway plan, and once they get somewhere with magic they heal each other. Once back in San Diego, Simon and Baz have a moment by the ocean. Shep tells Penny he's cursed. And then it turns out Watford is in trouble! In case you missed it, we've already read the first book in the trilogy, Carry On, and you can listen here. You can find the show notes on the website. This episode was recorded on 2 April 2023. Thanks for listening! We'll be back with a one shot next week - we're watching Legally Blonde. And then we'll be back for Season 10 reading Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. Themes will be up on the website soon! You can find out more about this podcast at www.marginaliapod.com. If you have any thoughts, questions, or general feedback, let us know at hello@marginaliapod.com

Shiver is the first in a YA series by Maggie Stiefvater, originally released in 2009. The book has been on my bookcase since that point and until this year I hadn't done more than move it twice (when I moved house). So, what makes this werewolf novel the perfect spooky read for Booktober? Check out my spoiler-free review to find out. It was the ideal palate cleanser after my previous Booktober read.
