Part 1 Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards Summary"Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards is a seminal book in the field of art education that aims to teach individuals how to draw by tapping into the creative and intuitive capabilities of the right hemisphere of the brain. Here's a summary of its key concepts:The Role of the Brain Hemispheres: Edwards explains the difference between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. The left hemisphere is analytical and logical, while the right is more intuitive, holistic, and artistic. The book emphasizes that many people struggle with drawing because they are predominantly using their left brain.Perception vs. Interpretation: One of the main themes of the book is learning to see like an artist. Edwards argues that most people are trained to interpret and label what they see rather than truly observe. She provides exercises to help readers shift from an interpretive mindset to a perceptive one, allowing them to draw more accurately.Upside-Down Drawing: One of the techniques Edwards introduces is upside-down drawing, where students draw a picture that is turned upside down. This method helps bypass the left brain's interpretive processes and engages the right brain, allowing students to see shapes and lines rather than recognizable objects. The Importance of Trusting One's Intuition: Edwards encourages artists to trust their instincts and inner vision. She believes that everyone has artistic potential, and overcoming self-doubt is crucial for creative expression. Development of Skills: The book provides practical exercises and assignments to develop fundamental drawing skills such as line, shape, proportion, and perspective. It covers key concepts like contour drawing and negative space, which foster greater observational skills and artistic confidence.Beyond Technique: While technical skills are important, Edwards also discusses the emotional and psychological aspects of art. She emphasizes the value of personal expression and the joy of creativity, suggesting that drawing should be a source of pleasure rather than pressure.Overcoming Creative Barriers: Edwards identifies common barriers to creativity, such as fear of failure and societal pressures. She provides strategies for overcoming these obstacles, encouraging readers to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process.Overall, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" serves not only as a guide to drawing but also as an exploration of how to unlock artistic abilities through understanding and engaging the mind's broader capabilities.Part 2 Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain AuthorBetty Edwards is an American art educator and author, best known for her book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain," which was first published in 1979. This book gained significant popularity for its unique approach to teaching drawing, emphasizing the importance of using both parts of the brain; the analytical left side and the creative right side. The book's methods focus on developing observational skills, enabling even those with little artistic experience to learn to draw. Other Books by Betty Edwards:Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook (1999) A companion workbook that provides exercises and activities to implement the techniques from the original book. The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1999) An updated and expanded edition of the original book, including new insights and techniques developed since the first publication.Color: A Course in Mastering the Art of Mixing Colors (1985) Focuses on understanding and mixing colors effectively.Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain for Kids (1999) A version specifically tailored for younger audiences, making the principles accessible to children. The Complete Colored Pencil Book (2003) A guide to using colored...
Part 1 The Gap and The Gain by Dan Sullivan Summary"The Gap and The Gain" by Dan Sullivan, co-written with Benjamin Hardy, presents a transformative mindset concept that emphasizes the importance of perspective in personal and professional development. The book focuses on two distinct mental frameworks: the 'Gap' and the 'Gain.' Key Concepts:The Gap: The 'Gap' refers to the mindset where individuals focus on their current situation compared to their ideal or future goals. This perspective often leads to feelings of inadequacy, disappointment, and frustration because it emphasizes unmet aspirations and what is lacking in one's life or progress. By measuring themselves against future goals, people tend to overlook their achievements and growth, leading to a negative and defeatist attitude. The Gain: Contrarily, the 'Gain' is the mindset that encourages individuals to measure their progress relative to where they started. This perspective promotes gratitude and acknowledgment of personal growth, triumphs, and achievements, no matter how small they may seem. It fosters a positive outlook by recognizing how far one has come rather than fixating on how far one still has to go. Practical Applications:The authors stress the importance of switching from the 'Gap' to the 'Gain' to cultivate a more fulfilling life and achieve personal growth. This can be done through practices such as journaling about accomplishments, reflecting on past successes, and regularly evaluating progress based on one's journey rather than just goals. The book also includes various strategies and exercises to help readers shift their focus and develop a habit of recognizing their own achievements and growth. Overall Message:"+The Gap and The Gain" advocates for a mindset shift that prioritizes gratitude and self-acknowledgment over unrealistic comparisons and expectations. By embracing the 'Gain' perspective, individuals can enhance their confidence, motivation, and overall happiness, leading to greater success and fulfillment in life.Part 2 The Gap and The Gain AuthorDan Sullivan is a renowned entrepreneur and coach, best known for his work in personal and business development. Have you and your family set your compass - vision, mission, values - for future family success? In this episode, Jeff, Jeff, and Bill discuss: Trusting God's plan and seeing others' generosity in those plans. The breaks and acceleration of our money and our generosity. Successful succession planning in business and family.Making a world view shift in regards to raising our children. Key Takeaways: Generosity is a powerful tool to change lives. Family was the first human institution established by which He's going to make the world more beautiful and creative, and within which we can see God's generous nature. Most failures within families are the result of poor communication. Start bringing your kids into your family giving when your children are young. If you didn't, start now. "I find that when the upper generations define their values, including their giving values, that those younger generations become more willing to accept those guidelines, and they will honor them, even if they disagree with them, and so it's all about having clarity, because clarity brings unity, and that's what they want." — Bill High Episode References: Navigators: https://www.navigators.org/Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Chapter 1 What's The Mastery of Love by Miguel Ruiz"The Mastery of Love" by Don Miguel Ruiz is a profound exploration of the dynamics of love and relationships. Ruiz draws on ancient Toltec wisdom to elucidate the barriers that prevent us from experiencing true love and connection with ourselves and others. The book emphasizes the importance of self-love as the foundation for any healthy relationship. Ruiz teaches that many of us have learned love in a distorted way, often confused with fear, dependency, and possessiveness. He introduces concepts like the "wounded mind," which stems from past traumas and societal conditioning, leading to unhealthy patterns of behavior in relationships. Through practical insights and exercises, Ruiz guides readers to heal their emotional wounds and cultivate unconditional love, pointing out that love should be an act of freedom rather than control. The core message is about embracing authenticity, fostering compassion, and recognizing that we are all deserving of love. The book ultimately serves as a spiritual guide for achieving deeper understanding and fulfillment in love.Chapter 2 The Mastery of Love by Miguel Ruiz Summary"The Mastery of Love" by Don Miguel Ruiz is a spiritual guide that explores the nature of love and relationships, drawing upon ancient Toltec wisdom. The central premise of the book is that love is not something we find or seek out, but rather a state of being that we can cultivate within ourselves. Key Concepts:Love vs. Fear: Ruiz emphasizes the distinction between love and fear. Many of our emotional struggles arise from fear—fear of rejection, abandonment, or loneliness. True love, however, is free from these fears.Self-Love: Before loving others, we must learn to love ourselves. This involves accepting our own worth and embracing our imperfections. Self-love lays the foundation for healthy relationships. The Mind's Beliefs: The author discusses how our beliefs and past experiences shape our expectations in relationships, often leading to suffering. He encourages readers to challenge these beliefs and let go of toxic patterns. The Emotional Body: Ruiz describes the emotional body as a reservoir of feelings influenced by our past. By healing our emotional wounds, we become more capable of giving and receiving love genuinely.Communication: Effective communication is crucial in relationships. The book advocates for open, honest dialogue to foster understanding and connection, urging individuals to express their feelings without fear.Attachments: Ruiz notes that attachments can create dependency and lead to suffering. True love is not possessive; it is based on mutual respect and freedom.Forgiveness: The act of forgiveness is vital for healing both oneself and a relationship. Holding onto resentment only perpetuates pain and discontent. Conclusion:"The Mastery of Love" serves as a guide to understanding love not only as an emotion but also as a practice of compassion, acceptance, and freedom. Ruiz encourages readers to transform their relationships—first with themselves and then with others—by letting go of fears and embracing love as a fundamental aspect of their existence.Chapter 3 The Mastery of Love AuthorMiguel Ruiz is a Mexican author and spiritual teacher, widely known for his work in promoting personal growth and self-understanding, grounded in the ancient wisdom of the Toltec culture. Chapter 1 What's No Wave by Thurston Moore"No Wave" by Thurston Moore is a profound exploration of an avant-garde music movement that emerged in New York City during the late 1970s. Characterized by its experimentalism, No Wave rejected the conventions of traditional rock and punk, opting instead for dissonance, noise, and a radical approach to sound. The genre was notably influenced by the harsh urban environment of New York, corresponding with the socio-political turmoil of the time. Artists associated with No Wave, such as Sonic Youth, Swans, and James Chance, embraced elements of free jazz, minimalism, and punk, creating an abrasive and confrontational experience.Throughout the text, Moore illustrates how No Wave was more than just a musical genre; it was also a cultural movement that intertwined visual art, film, and performance. He brings attention to key venues like CBGB and The Kitchen where No Wave artists showcased their work, and mentions the collaborative spirit among musicians, which was essential for the movement's evolution. The book maintains that No Wave's legacy continues to influence contemporary music and art, illustrating its lasting impact on the creative landscape.Chapter 2 No Wave by Thurston Moore Summary"No Wave" is a musical movement and artistic style that emerged in the late 1970s in New York City, characterized by its avant-garde approach to punk rock. It sought to break away from the conventional structures and sounds of typical rock music by incorporating dissonance, noise, and unorthodox performance styles. In his exploration of No Wave, Thurston Moore, the guitarist and vocalist of the iconic band Sonic Youth, reflects on the genre's influence on music and art. Moore emphasizes the genre's raw, experimental nature and its rejection of traditional melodies and harmonies. Bands associated with No Wave, such as Swans, DNA, and Mars, utilized feedback, atonality, and unconventional song structures to challenge listeners and redefine what music could be.The movement was not merely musical; it also encompassed visual art and performance, bringing together artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and performance artist Laurie Anderson. Moore discusses how No Wave represented a response to both the commercialization of the music industry and the cultural dynamics of New York City during that era, highlighted by tensions around race and politics. In summary, Moore's insights reflect a deep appreciation for the No Wave movement as a pivotal point in the evolution of experimental music, underscoring its legacy as a profound influence on future genres and artists who continue to push the boundaries of sound.Chapter 3 No Wave AuthorThurston Moore is an American musician, songwriter, and author, best known as the guitarist and co-founder of the influential alternative rock band Sonic Youth. Right trusty and well beloved, we greet you well!On the 6th December 1421 a baby boy is born in Windsor Castle…his parents are Catherine of Valois and Henry V ..this boy would be a crowned king of England as well a crowned king of France, the only one to ever achieve this honour. Sadly, he would come to lose both his crowns and his life. Henry VI, as he became, is often blamed to be the cause of the Wars of the Roses that rattled England in the middle of the 15th century. The historian Lauren Johnson takes a more sympathetic approach.Let's talk to her about her book on Henry, called The Shadow King; published by Head of Zeus (UK) and Pegasus (USA).Get The Shadow King:https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/shadow-king-9781784979645/ (UK)http://pegasusbooks.com/books/the-shadow-king-9781643131283-hardcover (USA)Get Lauren's Other Books:https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/author/lauren-johnson/ (UK)http://pegasusbooks.com/authors/lauren-johnson (USA) Lauren's Fiction:https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/The-Arrow-of-Sherwood-Hardback/p/4101/aid/1238 Find Lauren:http://lauren-johnson.com/index.html Lauren on Goodreads:https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7796295.Lauren_JohnsonIf you would like to join Natalie on her walking tours in London with Reign of London, please follow the links:https://www.getyourguide.com/london-l57/london-the-royal-british-kings-and-queens-walking-tour-t426011/https://www.getyourguide.com/london-l57/london-unsavory-history-guided-walking-tour-t428452/https://www.getyourguide.com/london-l57/royal-london-georgian-and-windsor-monarchs-walking-tour-t481355 .For more history fodder please visit https://www.ifitaintbaroque.art/ and https://www.reignoflondon.com/ Hosted on Acast. Right trusty and well beloved, we greet you well! On the 16th November 1272 Henry III died after a 56 year reign. His rule spanned the better part of the 13th century, and took England from the disaster that was King John to the conquering macho that was Edward I. Neatly sandwiched in between these two vastly different kingships is Henry III, the man who gave us Westminster Abbey , peace with France and Scotland; and Parliament, as a regular place of meetings for government officials. Henry may not have the best posthumous PR, but we're here to fix that. Please welcome to the podcast Matthew Lewis, historian, author and podcaster. I am so excited to be joined by Kyle Winkler this week. He is a bible teacher and the creator of the highly acclaimed mobile app, Shut Up Devil!, which ranks among the top Christian apps. Kyle is also an accomplished author, speaker, and frequent guest on prominent Christian media platforms such as The 700 Club, Praise the Lord, and Sid Roth's It's Supernatural. Outside of this, Kyle is the host of an incredible podcast and author of the book Permission To Be Imperfect: How To Strive Less, Stress Less, Sin Less. I'm always thrilled to have other podcasters on the show, and this chat with Kyle absolutely did not disappoint. Keywords faith, creativity, community, artists, shelters, book Takeaways Creativity is a part of everyone's identity as they are made in the image of the Creator. Community plays a vital role in nurturing creativity and serving the Lord as an artist. The intersection of faith and creativity can have a powerful impact on culture and the world. Even small acts of creativity in everyday life, like cooking a meal, can bring richness and beauty. There is a need for more community and support for adult singles, who often feel left out by the church. Writing a book or pursuing a creative project takes a lot of work and effort, but it can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience. Sharing stories and experiences of artists and creatives can inspire and encourage others to step into their own creativity.

In this episode, I (Brian Russell) take you on a deep dive into Paul's words in Philippians 3:17 "Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us.” Questions I explore: What kind of person do I need to become to serve as a model of Christ like character for others? Is Jesus' life merely aspirational or can humans literally live out the mind and character of Christ? How might God be calling me today to surrender even deeper into the love God and neighbor? What kind of person do I need to become in order to serve as a model of Christ like character for others even more effectively tomorrow than I do today? Dr. Stephen Meyers Collection. Intelligent Design Best Explains the Fossil Record. Why Intelligent Design Best Explains the Fossil Record Data. ACU Sunday Series. https://youtu.be/6JiEDbVyVK8 Discovery Science 203K subscribers 2,481 views Jul 10, 2023 ID The Future Podcast The fossil record reveals sudden explosions of new life forms followed by long periods of stasis. Is this evidence to be expected from a gradual Darwinian model? On this episode of ID The Future, host Eric Anderson talks with Casey Luskin on location at this year's Conference on Engineering and Living Systems (CELS). Luskin discusses three different models of the fossil record - the gradual descent model, the punctuated equilibrium model, and the explosion model. He explains why gradual Darwinian models are built on a lack of data and cannot adequately explain the patterns revealed in the record. He also shows that the sudden appearance of complex organisms and long periods of non-change are exactly what we would expect to find from a design perspective. "These organisms...are designed to change within limits," says Luskin, "and that's why we see stasis." Indeed, the fossil record is consistent with the engineering-based theory of bounded adaptation, the idea that organisms are deeply designed, purposeful, and capable of adapting within their operating parameters. It's an intriguing new way to look at the history of life on earth. Says Luskin, "The only way you're going to be able to generate all the information needed to yield an organism that's alive and functional all at once is through an intelligent cause." Don't miss this intriguing conversation! Casey Luskin holds a PhD in Geology from the University of Johannesburg, where he specialized in paleomagnetism and the early plate tectonic history of South Africa. He serves as Associate Director of Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture. Want to dive deeper into the fascinating explosions of plant and animal life in the geologic record?
