One of Marcelle's favorite books is The Night Circus, so she decided to be brave and do an entire episode about the best-selling fantasy novel by Erin Morgenstern. Why brave? Well because sometimes it's hard to think critically about something you love! We all know that. ;) This episode, Marcelle leads us through a quick chat about how the book was set up for success in 2011, followed by some theory about reading ecosystems from Book Was There: Reading in Electronic Times by Andrew Piper. And then, of course, she applies her brilliant mind to a brilliant thesis! If you like our show, please share it with family and friends! Vibe Check Gwen has a lot of upcoming travel and is moving! She is glad to have gotten over her recent cold. Danielle had a lot of things to do over the last week and wonders why everything happens at the same time. She also finished reading all 20+ trade volumes of the Lumberjanes series with her daughter! * Main Discussion Let's talk fantasy! The differences between Paranormal and Fantasy are vast, but also not quite as different as we thought. Hopefully you can make sense of what we mean. Danielle and Gwen both like fantasy on the screen more than on the page. The world building must be seamlessly built into the story, and, above all, it has to make SENSE. PS Danielle is a huge Tolkien nerd and this clip of Stephen Colbert out-nerding James Franco lives rent free in her mind. TV RECS Danielle: Pushing Daisies, Shadow & Bone, Once Upon a Time, Merlin, The Magicians Gwen: The Mayfair Witches, Westworld, The Good Place, House of Dragon/Game of Thrones MOVIE RECS Danielle: Lord of the Rings, Encanto, Labyrinth, Willow, Dark Crystal, Pan's Labyrinth, The Princess Bride Gwen: Mad Max: Fury Road, The Last Unicorn, Everything Everywhere All at Once BOOK RECS Danielle: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Mila Vane, The Kingmaker Chronicles series by Amanda Bouchet; Authors I have not read but people LOVE: Sarah J. This week Gwen wants to clean out her desk drawers before moving. Danielle turned in her pass pages for ACCIDENTALLY IN LOVE (8/8/32). She is determined to write 15,000 words a week through the end of March to finish this WIP. Gwen is finding comfort in watching Vegas tourism videos ahead of her trip with her husband! This week's guest is bestselling author Robert Dinsdale. Rob's latest novel “Paris by Starlight” is a beautiful work of magical realism that has been likened to the work of Neil Gaiman and Erin Morgenstern. In it, the Paris we know and love, with its citizens living by day, transforms with the arrival of the People, people who have been exiled from their homeland, who live by night. In our conversation, Rob discusses why Paris lends itself to magical realism, the fleeting nature of beauty, and what to make of the idea that “if you don't look after what belongs to you, somebody else just comes along and takes it.” Then, he treats us to a reading from “Paris by Starlight.”https://twitter.com/Robert_DinsdaleJoin our Book Club: patreon.com/parisundergroundradioFind Us OnlineWebsite: https://www.parisundergroundradio.com/storytimeinparisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/parisundergroundradioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/parisundergroundradio/CreditsHost and Producer: Jennifer Geraghty. In Episode 119, Keri Blakinger joins me to discuss her debut memoir, Corrections in Ink, a mind-blowing personal story, also speaks to the broader issues of addiction and women in the prison system. Keri went from being an elite figure skater in her youth to being arrested for possession of heroin while a student at Cornell, and then serving two years in the New York prison system. In her memoir, Keri is self-reflective, sharing what is ultimately a hopeful and redemptive story, despite the dark places it goes along the way. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights When and why Keri decided to share her story in book form. How the pandemic impacted her journalism career and writing her memoir. The connection between her figure skating, her mental health, and her drug addiction. Some of the bigger surprises she experienced in prison. How Keri thinks she managed to overcome the statistics and “make good on a second chance.” An example of the ways inmates work around some of the arbitrary and unwritten rules of jail. All about ‘books in jail': requesting and ordering books, time allotted to reading, access, and prison libraries. Keri's personal reading experience in jail and covering this topic as a journalist. Current issues Keri is investigating within the prison system. Blake, Patrick, and Kevin dive into the last two Book Club selections: L.E. Hall's Planning Your Escape, which serves as both a history of play that led up to the creation of escape rooms and as a guide on how to approach escape games (with a good dose of immersive theatre history to boot); and Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus, a fantastical novel set in the midst of a duel between two magicians at an otherworldly circus that just so happens to be inspired in part by the original production of Punchdrunk's Sleep No More.Hosted by Kevin Gossett, with Blake Weil & Patrick McLeanShow NotesFailbetter's promotional story game for The Night Circus Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
