It's the return of Food Writers Talking About Food Writing. Every couple of weeks, Matt invites a journalist to talk about some favorite recent food writing as well as their thoughts on the industry as a whole. Nadia Chaudhury is the deputy editor of Eater New York and Eater Northeast, a born-and-raised New Yorker who spent a decade running Eater Austin before coming home. Her family is behind Kalustyan's, the legendary NYC specialty food store that has been feeding chefs, cooks, and curious eaters since 1944. On this episode, Nadia and Matt discuss the state of food media, the stories she's chasing at Eater, and what it's like to grow up with one of New York City's most essential food institutions in the family. Happy Pride, millennials! This week Laura and Eric are getting personal. They share their results from the Kinsey Scale and the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid and dig into what those numbers actually mean — and what they don't. Do these tools change how you think about your identity? When do labels feel useful, and when do they just flatten the full picture? The conversation expands from sexuality to gender, including a thought experiment that asks: if you could wake up tomorrow in a different body — with no one batting an eye — would you press the button? For a deeper dive on figuring out gender identity, check out Doc Impossible's piece on Substack: https://stainedglasswoman.substack.com/p/how-to-figure-out-if-youre-trans Then Laura and Eric zoom out to talk about the state of Pride in 2026 — what it means to celebrate, and what corporate involvement in queer spaces has come to look like. We dig into the cautionary tale of Target, which built its entire brand identity around inclusion and aspiration, then quietly walked away from it under political and economic pressure — with real consequences for its bottom line. (Full piece from the Minnesota Reformer linked below.) Recs this week: Laura's watching The Birdcage — a forever classic. And Eric wants you to check out Doc Impossible on substack. After Dark is an extension of today's conversation — what does "heterosexual, more than incidental homosexual tendencies" actually mean for how we think about own identities? We dig into this and more personal questions inspired by today's discussion! But there was one writer in that group whom we hadn't yet interviewed, but now we have. Meredith Doench teaches creative writing and literature at the University of Dayton and is a writer of sapphic thrillers, which is perfect since June is Pride Month. We're delighted she joined us to talk about her latest book titled Never Say Die, a novel about a detective named Rory Scott who has to contend with her own mother-daughter issues when someone in the community for the second time in six years, kidnaps a young girl and murders a teenager. Meredith talks to us about her love of crime novels and how writing and marketing novels with LGBTQ characters has changed since she began publishing. Our book rec segment of the show this week focuses on books with unusual narrators. These are narrators who aren't human, and they might not even be tangible. You can find Alyson Richman at www.alysonrichman.com or on IG @alysonrichman. If you're a historical fiction lover, you've probably read something by Alyson Richman. She's the author of 11 novels, including The Missing Pages, which was published last fall. We were delighted that she agreed to come on the show and speak to us about this book, although we did sneak in a question about The Velvet Hours published in 2016, which our book club read many years ago. It is about a real Paris courtesan in the Belle Epoque who in her later years as World War II approaches shares her life story with her granddaughter. The Missing Pages is a historical fiction novel that is about a man's love of books, but it is also a ghost tale, a romance, and a story of the Titanic all rolled into one. Richman is known for making the reader feel the sumptuous details of the world she is writing about, and she does it again in this book. Our book rec segment of the show is all about musicians, but we're not talking solely about musician memoirs, although we do have one of those. We've got a children's nonfiction book about a Ukrainian pianist who performed for Nazsis, a National Book Award winner, a mystery about a stolen violin, a story about a wedding singer whose own relationship is on the rocks, and a coming of age story set in the 1970s that includes a rock star. Books Mentioned in This Episode: 1- The Missing Pages by Alyson Richman 2- The Velvet Hours by Alyson Richman 3- The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray 4- All the Beauty in the World by Patrick Bringley 5- Buckeye by Patrick Ryan 6- The Hare with the Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal 7- Underlake by Erin L. What books do you recommend when someone says: “I want to get into fantasy and sci-fi… but I don't know where to start?”Today, Jim is joined once again by the one and only Roofmistress Leigh-a for a lively, funny, and passionate discussion about FIVE speculative fiction recommendations she believes NEVER miss. Some may surprise you. But all of them come with the full Leigh-a seal of approval.Along the way, expect plenty of banter, passionate defense of favorite books, discussion about what makes stories truly accessible and memorable, and probably at least one moment where Jim realizes he's being judged for his reading habits. If you enjoyed Glenn the Geeky Hippie's “go-to recommendation” episode, this is very much in that same spirit—but now with more tiara energy. What are YOUR go-to, can't-miss SFF recommendations? Darren and I discuss Euphoria's episode “Stand Still and See,” plus a few other shows and recent horror releases. We start with weather chatter and quick TV updates, including the latest Margot Has Many Trouble episode (Child Services investigation, custody threats, Nick Offerman and Greg Kinnear moments) and a recommendation for the horror film Obsession (from a YouTube filmmaker who made Milk and Cereal), along with Hokum and upcoming genre releases like Backrooms. We then break down Euphoria: Alamo's vivid, effective childhood prologue and how it frames his misogyny; Rue's heavy religious iconography (burning bush/Moses reference) and her church phone call with her mom; the DEA/Laurie/Alamo plot tightening around an ambulance-smuggling “one more run”; Cassie's funny, triggered audition improvisation and deleting her OnlyFans; Maddy's strip-club photo set and unease about Alamo; frustration with sidelined Nate and an unconvincing Rue/Jules romance. We speculate about the unusually long finale and want a Bishop backstory segment. It looks like THC-infused drinks won't be having a moment in Colorado any time soon. A bill to increase levels of THC allowed in beverages sold at bars and liquor stores died this week when sponsors pulled it before a vote. So, why can a neighboring state like Kansas sell these higher level drinks when cannabis isn't even legal there? Food and culture writer Sara Rosenthal joins host Bree Davies and producer Olivia Jewell Love dig into hemp vs. cannabis and why bartenders may be wary of this new frontier. They also dissect the nostalgic drive behind bars with curated vinyl and vintage video games. That sounds like a lot so we are glad Aaron joins us to explain it all in a much more succinct way than we ever could. And his 2025 YA novel Night Swimming just came out in paperback this week. Riss M. Neilson joins me today to talk about her new romance, The Bridge Back to You. This is a second chance love story between two exes who unexpectedly inherit shares of the same restaurant – the restaurant that he runs, and that she kind of ran away from. There is so much to discuss in this book: we talk about characters with chronic illnesses like endometriosis, or mental illnesses like OCD. We talk about the astrology of her characters and what insights she can gain from their charts, and then, she gives us a list of restaurants to try if we're ever in Providence, Rhode Island. And Riss even expands my theory about which foods are the universal expression of human love....Support for this episode comes from Savage Bonds by EV Mitchell, a gritty, paranormal slow-burn body-positive romance with lots of spice, some knotting, and shared psychic sexytimes. Savage Bonds is available now in Kindle Unlimited, or in print from the author's website or your local library! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
