In today’s episode of Small-Time Leaders, Jenn Swanson talks about one of her leaders while working on the ICU unit in Canada. Martha, the head nurse, was looking to apply major changes in the hospital to improve productivity and she decided to ask every stakeholder of the staff on their opinion. Jenn found that a little strange at first but the more she thought of it, the more she loved the idea of creating a collaborative workplace. You might be surprised and find out that your staff has the next best breakthrough idea for the company, but the only way to find that out is to ask your stakeholders. In today’s episode of Small-Time Leaders, Jenn Swanson talks about one of her earlier leaders in her life. She met Kareen Zebroff while working on the theater and she was fascinated by how a professional actress, writer, and a well-achieved woman gave her full attention to Jenn when she was talking. Jenn experienced firsthand how does it feel to get the full attention of someone and love it. Years later she practices the same method. Jenn pays attention and is present when she talks to someone, no matter who they are or their status. Welcome to the Sherpa Sheet! This time around it's a (bit more serious than usual) chat with David Battaglia about his podcast, "Perception Is Reality." David was a pleasure to speak with, and (I'll say it again for Episode 3), a big help. Check his podcast out and notice how tactfully he handles what could be uncomfortable conversations for many of us. We talk about how social media and political beliefs affect conversation in these times, and how to be a better conversationalist with those you might disagree with. Definitely stuff for me to keep in mind as I continue my own podcasting journey, aka "The Sherpa-lution". Oh, and we also rave about Allison Sharpe of Travel Snacks! (Remember her from Episode 1?) After our chat, a few Sherpa Suggestions on podcasts about communication. Then, I sing the finale from "Rigoletto". (What's that? It didn't record? Ummm...never mind that last part.) Jenn Swanson is the diva behind the Communication Diva. She provides career education and coaching to women and men who are making a career change or jumping back into the job force after being out of it for awhile. Jenn truly is a diva and helps her clients create amazing results! Except there’s one problem: she’s not making enough money in the business. She has put in so much of her time and money into it over the past few years and she’s frustrated and wondering when she’s going to make that turning point...when it’s finally going to “make it!” During this LIVE COACHING CALL, I help Jenn dissect who she really is, what she offers and how and who her products and services are actually ideal for. Her answers all point us to a big conclusion...she needs to rebrand. Immediately this might sound scary and big, but we actually come up with a new name during the conversation and create real, actionable activities that Jenn can do to help her solidify this even more. This LIVE COACHING CALL is perfect for you if you’re putting out great content, but can’t figure out why more people aren’t purchasing your products or services (i.e. you’re not attracting the income you really want!). You can check out more about Jenn here: https://www.communicationdiva.com/ These LIVE COACHING SESSIONS are here so you can get deep insight into business issues, ideas and challenges that we all face as we create strategies, solutions and action plans that you can benefit from! Careers by Jenn Podcast: Get the Job, Love Your Work, Advance Your Career
Almost every job interview includes the question: What are your strengths and weaknesses?" In this episode of the NEWLY re-branded podcast (formerly the Communication Diva podcast) Careers by Jenn, I take a look first at how you can do a self-assessment of your strengths, in order to generate a list to work with. I also invite you to invite others into your research, and offer ways you can do that that are both free and paid. With good questions and with fresh perspectives, you should be able to create a fairly good-sized list by the time you get through all the questions, and from that list, generate your SIGNATURE strengths, to help you stand out above the crowd.
“Communication Diva” is the tongue-in-cheek, sassy title of podcaster and author (and church minister) Jenn Swanson. Jenn doesn’t actually believe anyone can be a diva of communication but does passionately insist that we could all do with a little practice! Through her podcast, public speaking, workshops, individual coaching, ministry, and recently published book, Jenn lives out her personal mission statement: to connect, encourage, and empower others and to help people “know they can.” Aimed at high school and college graduates (and with a gentle nudge toward personal awareness and growth), What They See: How to Stand Out and Shine in Your New Job takes readers beyond the interview and into the three-month probationary period of new employment. TWEET: I didn’t want to deal with paperwork but wanted to do pastoral care with patients. @jennswanson2 Finding what calls to you: Do you follow what “calls to you”? Jenn shares how she spent 23 years in the hospital business, but then left to follow her dreams. After securing her instructor’s license, she went into teaching medical terminology and found it was something she enjoyed. “There was something about teaching that was calling me,” Jenn says. But she didn’t stop there; she went on to get her ministerial training part-time while working at the hospital—and added another profession to her repertoire. TWEET: Why should I slow down when I love what I’m doing? @jennswanson2 Don’t overload your plate! Do you feel compelled to say YES to everything that comes along? So many people “overload” their plates by never learning to say NO. Jenn says you must be ruthless about your self-care and not let yourself get overloaded. Something may sound fun, but you have to look after yourself first and foremost. Always remember that your family must be your top priority. TWEET: DONE is better than perfect. @jennswanson2 Omigosh—I have to do this! Do you regularly step “outside your comfort zone”? Jenn says that the more she taught, the more she realized that there was a great need to be able to communicate effectively. Using language properly reduces tension in relationships---and couldn’t we all stand to communicate more effectively? Jenn explains how she found podcasting, met some great people who helped her along the way, and got hooked! TWEET: Take what you love to do and turn it into a paying gig. @jennswanson2 Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“Set a goal. It’s one thing to imagine a dream, but it’s another to write it down or tell someone you’re gonna do it. It adds another level of commitment. Break it down into small steps and do ONE thing today.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:15] Jenn’s eclectic background and her initial dream to pursue acting [3:14] Why Jenn didn’t go to acting school [6:25] Pursuing another dream in serving others [9:10] Balancing jobs, school, practicum training, and family [11:05] Getting ruthless with self-care [12:20] How Jenn’s kids lived out her dream of theater school [15:00] Discovering the world of podcasting [17:40] Looking back on 6 years of podcasting [19:33] Unexpected opportunities [21:14] Upcoming plans for Jenn [23:29] Doing it on your own terms [25:30] Why slow down? Goal-setting is something I think everyone should do, and surprisingly, lots of people actually don't. (I'm not talking about New Year's resolution-style either...I mean goals of every kind for all sorts of areas of your life.) When you do get around to actually setting a goal..what happens next? Often, the goals are "derailed" by our own mistakes. In this episode, I walk you through 7 mistakes that commonly appear when you decide to do something…when you set a goal, whether it’s a career goal, a personal goal, a dietary or financial goal…a relationship goal…whatever it is…these are some of the mistakes that get made that end up derailing the goal so it doesn't happen…which is sad! Join me to go through them and then see how you can avoid or counteract making them in the first place.
