Podcasting is often touted as a way to reach a younger, hipper demographic. But that ignores the millions of people 55+ who listen to podcasts today, with different habits and content preferences. We tend to think of podcasters as young and hip. And yes, that's true. But according to Edison Research, 24 million Americans over 55 listen to podcasts, up from just 4 million a decade ago. I don't have access to the complete data set, but I'm confident enough (Dunning-Krueger much?) to make some inferences based on the… oh, let's go with more mature podcast listening audience. 55+ podcast listeners have more discretionary time. 55+ is a very wide swath, covering more senior employees with more flexible work schedules, plus many retired and semi-retired people. They aren't forced to follow the listening patterns of those who work a 9-to-5. Lots of variance among 55+ podcast listeners. My hunch is that if you plotted out the percentage of listeners for each age starting at 55, you'd likely see a standard Power Law develop. The “younger ages” on the left would have the biggest percentages, which gradually taper down as the age itself gets higher. 24 million will look small tomorrow. When The Infinite Dial 2022 report comes out, people who were 54 in the prior report will now be counted in the 55+ bracket. 55+ podcast listeners like age-specific content If someone listens to Alan Alda's podcast, Clear+Vivid, they also tend to like Katie Couric's show. She's 64. And the podcast by Rob Lowe who's 57. And even WTF by Marc Marin, also 57. So yes, old people do listen to podcasts. And they're going to keep listening to podcasts as we become they of whom we speak. ----- Boostagram Corner! In 2019, he joined the Maine Seacoast Mission as president. John grew up in Cleveland Ohio, the youngest son of a sharecropper's daughter from the deep South and a first-generation American from eastern Europe. The son of a U.S. Navy sailor, Zavodny is proud to now be a small part of the Maine Seacoast Mission's seagoing history. He is the first member of his family to complete college and understands first-hand the transformative role education can play. John's conviction that investment in place, family, and community is key to long term individual wellness guides his leadership of the Mission. Dr. Zavodny's PhD work focused on the ironist pragmatism of American philosopher Richard Rorty, who famously encouraged philosophers to give up academic pursuits and apply their rigorous intellectual training to matters of social edification. In that spirit, Zavodny evolved from a college professor to a systems-thinking leader – first within higher education and now as president of the Maine Seacoast Mission. John and his wife Anna live in Ellsworth, Maine. In their spare time, they enjoy gardening and home improvement projects; playing music; and hiking and cross-country skiing in beautiful Maine. The Frontlines of COVID: A Surgery Sett Series: Episode 13 - Dr. Elizabeth Bojsza and Dr. Susmita Pati The coronavirus pandemic has upturned a lot of the everyday functions of our lives, and of our work. Perhaps the biggest way it has affected the nation is the way we communicate. Where we once had direct eye contact, we have masks or a screen between us. With the added stress the pandemic has caused, communicating in healthcare is proving to be more difficult nowadays. Luckily, Dr. Elizabeth Bojsza and Dr. Susmita Pati from the Alda Center are helping us navigate this new terrain. Fareed Zakaria, the noted journalist, broadcaster, and author, talked with Alan Alda on this episode of Clear+Vivid back in February, before the coronavirus consumed not only our lives and livelihoods, but also any other topic of conversation. But what’s fascinating is how much Fareed's thoughts on the importance of a fulfilled life – an examined life – resonates with us now, when we are all trying to cope with a world in which everything is so uncertain. On this episode of Clear+Vivid, Alan Alda, welcomes his friend Ira Flatow to the show. Ira hosts the wildly popular Science Friday series for public radio (and it's also a podcast). What happens when you put these two passionate advocates for science communication together on one podcast? In this episode of “Beyond the Expected,” Alan Inkles, Director of the Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University, sits down with American actor, director, screenwriter, and author Alan Alda, visiting professor and founder of the Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. Alan has honed his skills as a masterful interviewer over 11 years on the award-winning PBS series Scientific American Frontiers where he spoke with hundreds of the world's greatest scientists. When meeting with academic leaders around the country, Mr. Alda started suggesting to university presidents that they teach scientists how to present their research to the public. Stony Brook accepted his challenge by opening the Center for Communicating Science where Alan used his experience as an actor: whether in relating to the people he interviewed or acted. Using exercises derived from improvisational theater, he and the Center's trainers help participants connect with their audience and bring clarity to complex ideas. The Center has trained over 15,000 doctors and scientists in eight countries to be world class communicators. The Center has also trained Stony Brook University Discovery Prize Award young scientific finalists to present their nominated presentation to judges for consideration of winning $200,000 to further their research. Alan's new podcast, “Clear+Vivid with Alan Alda®,” which looks to help listeners connect better with others in every area of their lives, launched in July 2018 and now has over seven million downloads. A seven-time Emmy Award winner as well as six Golden Globes Awards and recipient of the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, Alan Alda played Hawkeye Pierce and wrote and directed many of the episodes on the classic TV series M*A*S*H. He has starred in, written and directed many films, and was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Aviator. He appeared in continuing roles on ER, The West Wing, 30 Rock, The Blacklist, Horace and Pete, The Good Fight, and a recurring role on Showtime's Ray Donovan. Having most recently starred in the Academy Award nominated Noah Baumbach film, Marriage Story, Alan is also the author of several New York Times Best Selling books, the most recent being the 2017 break out book on relating and communicating, “If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face?” Production Credits Thanks to Alan Alda, legendary actor, director, writer, author, and, for more than 11 years, the host of “Scientific American Frontiers” on PBS. Dr. Jamil Zaki is a Stanford scientist who has a way for you to sharpen you empathy skills. It’s a little like going to the gym to strengthen your muscles and improve your flexibility. In fact, he calls it the "empathy gym". It's not an actual place you can go to, but rather, it's things you can do to get a work-out for those empathy skills. That’s something we all seem to need - now more than ever. As Dr. Zaki explains to Alan Alda in this episode, we’re not stuck with the level of empathy we came in with. We can exercise it and raise it. We can use this virtual gym to improve our ability to read other people and to connect with them — which makes Dr. Zaki the perfect guest for Clear+Vivid. You need little more evidence these days that our country is badly divided than to toggle back and forth between Fox News and MSNBC – two perspectives on the same day’s events that might be coming from two different universes. We have become a nation of tribes. We didn’t set out on Clear+Vivid to explore this divide, but in our conversations about connecting and communicating, the topic kept coming up. On this podcast, Alan Alda has talked to people as diverse as politicians, comedians, and psychologists. From each guest, we've heard not only possible reasons for the current tribalism, but also possible solutions. This episode explores some of Alan's favorite guest insights about we can overcome this "Us" vs. "Them" mentality of tribalism. Support the show.

Immerse yourself in spirited conversations with people who know how hard it is, and yet how good it feels, to really connect with other people – whether it’s one person, an audience or a whole country. You'll know many of the people in these conversations – they are luminaries in our culture. Some you may not know. But what links them all is their powerful ability to relate and communicate. It's something we need now more than ever. Website https://art19.com/shows/clear-vivid-with-alan-alda Opinion I adore Alan Alda. That's what I wanted to hear his podcast. I've seen him on late night talk shows and I know he has a passion for science. I expected this podcast to be more science-based. While the intro was professionally produced with superior audio quality. Maybe I expected him to come out and hit me with some science fact over the head, but when he interviews Itzhak Perlman (who I am also a fan of, he can seriously shred on the violin) the show sounded like another celebrity show where they interview celebrities. Granted, I listened to the first three minutes, but that's the point of this show. Alan is 82, and when he does what I will call the "calm, soothing, NPR voice" he sounds, um, 82. I didn't expect the energy of a morning zoo, and I didn't tune into the Hawkeye Pierce show, but I did need to come to grips that one of my favorite actors is 82. This also makes me happy as he may bring in an older demographic to the podcasting space.I think he named his podcast wrong and nobody is going to type clear+vivid. They will type in clear and vivid. Luckily, he is Alan Alda and can get away with this because people can type in Alan Alda.In the end, I'm not sure how I feel about this show. It's not what I expected, and because it is Alan Alda I will listen to the rest of the interview.
