But perceptions can find us attracted to the friendly and put off by the direct. Your influence is part of the perception equation and why being responsible for our influence is so important for us individually.  And never discount the power of context and the power it can have on clarity and perception.

The first 16 words, of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America are: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." (the rest of the Amendment reads as follows: "...or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.") I like to run the following thought experiment. Imagine that I'm auctioning off a coffee mug. Auction it off in a classroom, or a keynote room, and maybe I can get people to bid say $15 for my coffee mug. And then when I hand the coffee mug over, I intentionally pull out a $50 bill and show them, hey, this $50 bill was in the coffee mug. Well, why didn't I get paid for that? Because the buyers didn't know that it was there. Their perception was, it was a coffee mug. Now imagine I reach back and I grab a second coffee mug and I auction that one off. Now I might get $40. But what if there is an no $50 bill in this coffee mug? The real point, is that what our buyers believe has everything to do with their willingness to pay. It actually has nothing to do with what's true. Hopefully as marketers, as business people, we try to help clients believe the truth. But if we've built products that are better than our competitors, if we have $50 bills tucked into our coffee mugs and our buyers don't know it, we can't win the deals. We don't get paid for it. Let's talk about having confident conversations and how “perception becomes reality”. Specifically, how people can create a reality of narrative about you, why they may see you a certain way and your role in the conversation.

“People's perceptions of you is their reality, so pay attention to what you want their reality to be.” Peter Margaritis The way we show up does make a big difference, whether in person or virtually. Perception is reality and the perceptions we create with others, especially with decision making executives, really matter. People want to interact with humans they can see hear and experience in person, whether remotely or in person. When we can see and hear each other, we see and feel the energy, the engagement, body language and attitude.  According to the itopia press release dated April 12, 2022, executives view the lack of employee engagement as a subpar performance. 92% of the executives say employees who turn their cameras off are generally less engaged in the work overall. Having your camera turned off during any kind of virtual event is not only disengaging, but also disrespectful, and quite simply impolite. The world has changed in so many ways since the pandemic began. One of those ways is the increase in hybrid work as a preferred method of work. Virtual meetings and learning are becoming part of the lexicon in evolving and growing our businesses. Ask yourself how you will change your unseen presence to one that sends a message and perception to senior leadership that you are engaged and ready.
