Dr. Zhao speaks about her incredible research into how resource scarcity impacts human cognition and behaviour.  Kim and Dr. Zhao discuss Dr. Zhao's 2023 study which found that one-time, unconditional cash transfers of $7,500 to people living in poverty reduced homelessness in Vancouver. Dr. Zhao explains her work modelling the cost of a guaranteed livable basic income (GLBI), and her findings that a GLBI would go a long way to allowing people to rebound in tough economic times and help to eliminate poverty and homelessness, in addition to costing less than half of the $92B currently spent every year on measures that keep people in poverty. To learn more about Dr. Zhao's research, please visit her Behavioral Sustainability Lab or her website at the University of British Columbia. Helping me Draw The Line this week it's Lexa Voltz who's from Montreal, Canada and is now based in Nelson, British Colombia. My guest today is Svein Tuft.He is the  character straight out of the Jack London book "The Call of the Wild"He was professional cyclings unconventional cyclist, but his unconventional approach is what made him so successful. He knew what worked for him, he knew how to extract the best of himself for his success and his team's success. He famously dragged the peloton for 190km in the Italian stage race Tirreno-Adriatico.He won thirteen Canadian National Championships, represented Canada at the Olympic Games, was part of the Orica-GreenEdge team for 8 years, he was the driving force in time trial victory on stage 1 of the 2014 Giro d'Italia, where he spent time in the maglia rosa leaders jersey. He raced in the Tour de France, Giro D'Italia, the Vuelta a Espana, the one-day classics and week-long stage races, and he secured the silver medal in the time trial at the 2008 UCI Road World Championships. When he wasn't clocking up thousands of kilometres on the paved roads as a professional cyclist,  he was escaping to the wilds of Andorra and British Colombia on epic adventures into the unknown. His true calling is to discover and explore trails and single tracks into the mountains and wilderness. He is happiest when he is out on a ski touring adventure into the backcountry or humping his gravel bike over some monstrous mountain pass into the unknown. On today's show,  We talk about all this and more, so I think you are going to enjoy listening to Svein's adventures.Hello friends, I am your host ASHLEY PETTIT welcome to another episode of Beyond the Mountains podcast. I love to give any man who is being of service a platform to share his message. I met today's guest, Dustin Bakker, in an online program and was immediately impressed by his willingness to be authentic and vulnerable and his desire to help other men. After losing his sense of happiness, Dustin began changing his life and slowly became aware of what his mind, body, and soul were trying to tell him. Dustin did the research, study, and inner work required to discover his happiness. He's gone on to create F.O.ReaLiving and The Strength of Men. We discuss the power of choice, expressing emotions, and the goal of a stronger connection to our authentic selves. Dustin shares how drugs were one of his masks, keeping him from his strengths and true self. Dustin is a strong example of self-sufficiency while also yearning for connection. It does not have to be one or the other. Community is another strength that society seems to have let go of.  We all benefit from helping others. Running a side business using drones? How can you make or prep for the switch to making it a permanent business? Today's episode is brought to you by In-person Experience training scheduled for May 2023 in CO. In this unique training event, limited to ONLY 8 participants, you will be immersed in an experienced-based learning environment. You'll take flight daily and often, and you'll master cutting-edge drone techniques along the way. Learn from experienced pilots to get the most out of your drone. Also, build repeatable systems to scale your business. You will be one of only 8 pilots to spend an entire week flying, learning, and mixing with the Drone U Flight Crew. Think of this training as a drone retreat… as we'll hang out together at a resort style mountain location. Through the use of scenario-based missions, one-on-one coaching, and a competitive (but fun) environment, participants will expand their skill set and join the ranks of an elite group of drone pilots who command top dollar for their sought-after skills. Today's show is on running and growing a drone business as your main source of income. Our question for today is from Justin from British Colombia, Canada, who is currently running a drone business as a side business outside of his regular employment. Justin would like to know how he can prep on transitioning from a side business to permanent drone business. Thanks for the question Justin. Today we go deeper in our exploration, we will look at the history of navigation and maritime architecture, some questions from the previous episode will be answered and some new will be posited. There are plenty of mysteries here like cave paintings of boats from the deep ice age, maps that seem to understand longitude long before the chronometer and captain cooks voyages. There is the peculiarity of the Japanese current and the story of how Europeans first came to Polynesia and why the western gates of the pacific where closed for almost 500 years after Marco Polo. Far East Pottery that predates "pre-pottery neolithic" of "the cradle of civilization" no matter how counter intuitive that sounds. There is an old indigenous canoe from British Colombia that sailed around the world in 1901. I will try to tie some of it together by an continued elaboration of my own theory and a double edged critique of the hegemons as well as the alternative historians and archaeologists. Here the monopoly knowledge production of Cambridge University will take another blow which they might not recover from. After all not to many are looking for a proto-communist world society with painted sails before the Younger Dryas so I promise you unique good times!

Before Lot Smith's raid on the Wagon Supplies, conventional wisdom in the Government and the Nation seemed to be that talk of the Latter-day Saints actually resisting the Army was just that – Talk.   But when news of the raid finally reached the states, it was shocking. Overnight, Johnston's Army lost roughly half its supplies for the campaign. Johnston and his troops would spend a hungry, freezing winter on half-rations in the ashes of what had once been Fort Bridger – which also had been burned by the Nauvoo Legion to deny shelter to Johnston's troops.        But Lot Smith's raid sparked a dangerous escalation of the conflict.  A Grand Jury hastily handed down indictments for treason against Church Leaders, raising the grim prospect of death by hanging.  Army leaders -- Johnston, McClellan, William T. Sherman, Harney -- all longed for a pitched battle against the Mormons.  Latter-day Saints faced danger and new threats from the north (with native tribes turning against them), from the south (with the intrepid Captain Randolph Marcy on the verge of finding a way through Utah's arid red rock desert), and from the west (as California's clamored to raise a force to attack Utah and avenge the murders of the Baker-Francher Wagon Company at Mountain Meadows).    On this episode, we explore what easily could have been the most precarious and dangerous moment the Latter-day Saints have ever faced. For the materials and sources in this story, we owe a special thanks to Utah War historian William "Bill" MacKinnon - His two-volume set, "At Sword's Point: A Documentary History of the Utah War to 1858" is an extraordinary resource for anyone interested in learning more about the Utah War.    Search Terms: Utah War, William McClellan, "Little Mac", William Tecumseh Sherman, Albert Sidney Johnston, William Selby "Squaw Killer" Harney, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Poerter Rockwell, Civil War, Mormon History, Latter-day Saints, Utah Territory, Polygamy, Plural Marriage, U.S. Army,  Fort Bridger, Lot Smith, Salt Lake City, 2LT James Henry Martineau, George Watts, Echo Canyon, Albert Sidney Johnston, Brigham Young, Charlie Becker, James Ferguson,  Wild Bill Hickman, Nauvoo Legion, International Latter-day Saints, Immigration, Prisoners, Law of War, Law of Armed Conflict, Russia, British Empire, Alaska, British Colombia.
