Jesus has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, v6. What are these covenants? How do they relate to the covenant of works and covenant of grace? What are the continuities and discontinuities between the old covenant and the new covenant?
Sermon April 7, 2024 | Rev. Richard Harris | Christ Presbyterian Church in Houston, TX | “The Covenant of Works” from Genesis 2:4-17 The post The Covenant of Works appeared first on Christ Presbyterian Church of Houston.
Gen. 2:8–17 Hos. 6:1–11 Lk 10:25–28 Rom. 5:18–21 In the last couple messages on the covenants of the Bible, we've come to recognize that there's a covenant vocabulary we have to learn. Sometimes a passage describes a covenant without using that word. There are words used, or there are elements of a covenant happening in the passage that show us that's what's happening. That's important to remember as we look into what is called the Covenant of Works. In this message, we explore how Scripture presents God's relationship with Adam in the Garden, what God promised to Adam, and how it relates to us.

In this episode, Caleb discusses the covenant of works with Richard Belcher Jr. (PhD, Westminster Theological Seminary). Dr. Belcher is a professor of Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte and the Academic Dean at both RTS Atlanta and RTS New York City as well an ordained minister in the PCA. Together they discuss questions like: What is the covenant of works? What is the biblical-theological warrant/foundation for a covenant of works in Scripture? How does the covenant of works relate to the other theological covenants (i.e. redemption and grace) and the historical covenants after Adam's fall (Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, and the New). Without The Covenant of Works, we don't understand the Fall; and if we don't understand the Fall, we don't understand our redemption.
In this episode, Dr. Clark continues the Heidelcast series on Romans, looking more in-depth at chapter 2. In previous episodes, Dr. Clark has unpacked total depravity and reprobation as described in Romans 1. Now, we see the role of the law, focusing especially on Romans 2:13. It is not a promise to Christians who keep the law in cooperation with the Holy Spirit. It is a re-statement of the works principle or the covenant of works: do this and live. Properly understanding these passages is critical for grasping Paul's division of Law and Gospel outline throughout the entire book! This episode of the Heidelcast is sponsored by Westminster Seminary California. The need for well-trained ministers and laity is greater now than at any time since the Reformation. Doctrinal confusion abounds. Educational standards are slipping. So the work of Westminster Seminary California has never been more important. We need pastors and leaders in the church who really know the Word, who can really read the original languages competently, who can preach the law and the gospel faithfully, who can shepherd the flock graciously, and who can reach the lost boldly. Does this sound like something to which you feel called? There's no better way to find out than to visit WSC in person! Come to Seminary For A Day, March 10, 2023. You will be able to sit in on classes, meet students and professors, see the campus and student housing, and have all your questions answered in-person by those best equipped to help you on your seminary journey! Jordan talks with Harrison Perkins about catholicity and the covenant of works. They cover topics like: Who was James Ussher and why should we care about him? What is the covenant of works? How did Ussher think about it? How did others? Was his understanding "novel"? What do intellectualism and voluntarism have to do with the covenant of works? Why should pastors take the time to read about and from those like Ussher? What about the covenant of works? On today's episode, Jon and Justin are joined by Pat Abendroth, pastor of Omaha Bible Church and cohost of The Pactum. In the first of two conversations on the covenant of works, the guys answer the question, "Is the covenant of works really in the Bible?" The guys seek to make a case for the legitimacy of the covenant of works from the Scripture and begin to venture into the significance of affirming (or denying) it. Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin talk personally with Pat Abendroth about his ministry and about his "journey" from dispensationalism to covenant theology.
