(Sensitive Content Warning) In our final episode of the Summer Stories mini-series, my friend Jodi bravely shares her story of overcoming the shame of sexual abuse. She was abused by her teacher at a Christian school, who later went on to plant and pastor churches, but her message is one of hope, healing from God, and the power of empathic community. She describes how she "buried" her trauma for decades, but how the Lord graciously began "unburying" and bringing the truth to the light. Our God graciously brings what has been kept in the dark into the light, for our healing, for our freedom, and for his glory. Emotional healing and freedom from shame do not happen quickly, but God faithfully gives us all that we need for the long journey. Listeners are encouraged to link arms with one another, and most importantly to look to the one, true Healer- Jesus Christ. In this episode of White Horse Inn, Michael Horton, Justin Holcomb, and Bob Hiller model charitable disagreement as they represent and discuss different interpretations of Genesis 1 and 2.

If the Apostles' Creed (2nd-7th c.), Nicene Creed (AD 325-589), and Athanasian Creed (5th-6th c.) were not "God-breathed," as are the Scriptures (2 Tim. 3:16), should they have any authority in our churches? In this episode, Pastors Zac and Brandon discuss the authority of these creeds. While the Bible is our highest authority, which makes it the "norming norm," creeds, confessions, and catechisms function as subordinate authorities, which makes them the "normed norm." Developing creedal summaries of the faith is a practice that goes all the way back to the early church, as they sought to "hold fast to the pattern of sound words" (2 Tim. 1:13). In fact, the Bible includes many early credal statements that existed prior to the writing of some of the New Testament books (e.g., Rom. 1:3-4; 1 Cor. 8:6; 15:3ff; Phil. 2:5-10; 1 Tim. 1:15; 3:16; 2 Tim. 1:9-10; 1 Pet. 3:18-21). Not only are creeds biblical, but everyone has one. [A]ll Christians engage in confessional synthesis," wrote Carl Trueman, "the difference is simply whether one adheres to a public confession, subject to public scrutiny, or to a private confession that is, by its very nature, immune to such examination." Michael Horton walked the path into Reformed theology through the book of Romans. As he studied Paul's words, he was gripped by the doctrine of justification by faith alone, and by other distinctives he would come to understand as Reformed—high views of creation, the Fall, the dignity of humanity, God's sovereign will, and God's mercy. In this episode of White Horse Inn, Justin Holcomb interviews Michael Horton about the Reformed tradition. They consider how the creeds and confessions testify to Scripture's clarity and provide the basis for a truly catholic faith, and they challenge listeners to resist prioritizing theological precision at the expense of love and unity. __________ To get our new Reformation Essentials collection head over to whitehorseinn.org/collection. __________ If you would like to download our free Doctrine Quiz just go to whitehorseinn.org/offers.

This is an issue I care deeply about in our oversexualized age. Children are being exposed earlier and earlier to sex through various technological means and they are exploring their sexuality through initiatory rituals as early as 13 years of age. While these exposures and practices deaden the soul and endanger the maturation of the mind, there is still a far deeper monster out there called sexual abuse. The recent Larry Nassar scandal is an indication that our society is attempting to grasp this issue but lacks the categories to deal with such barbarism. And while many of these events can be deeply politicized (Kavanaugh case), the Church must offer a proper response to this turmoil. We can say that the ministry of Jesus was a kingdom ministry to children. Our Lord desired their protection and even threatened with death those who would dare endanger or keep the children from being blessed by him. In this episode, Pastor Uri Brito sits down with Dr. Justin Holcomb. The Holcombs have published two children's books to help children understand their bodies. Indeed, it's not just academicians that need to develop a theology of the body, but children as well. I encourage parents to seek these out and begin the conversation earlier with our little ones about their image-bearing status and the significance and uniqueness of the body God gave them.
